HOWARD CITY The village council
of the Village of Howard City has elimi-
nated zoning permit fees in the spirit of
economic development.
At a regular meeting on Aug. 8, the
council discussed its zoning permit fee
schedule, which was established in 2005.
It was the consensus of the council to
eliminate zoning permit fees in order to
encourage growth and maintenance with-
in the community.
Our goal is to reduce the overall red
tape and cost associated with growing a
business, building a home or maintain-
ing ones property, said S. Michael Scott,
village president. We continue to grow
in a positive direction and we want to do
everything in our power to support that
growth.
The Village of Howard City continues
to be one of the fastest growing munici-
palities in Montcalm County and has tak-
en proactive steps to streamline its plan-
ning commission and approval process.
In 2010, the village council amended the
site plan review process to place the fnal
approval of commercial businesses in the
hands of its appointed Planning Commis-
sion.
We wanted to take the politics out of
the approval process and provide a busi-
ness friendly environment, noted Scott,
we welcome positive change and when
we fnd an ordinance that doesnt work,
we improve it to stay current with the
times.
FREMONT Tamarac, a Mem-
ber of Spectrum Health, announced
recently the launch of a revolutionary
new group training program integrat-
ing suspension training bodyweight
exercise.
Tamarac is the latest wellness cen-
ter to adopt TRX Suspension Training,
a method of functional training that
develops strength, balance, fexibility
and core stability simultaneously. It
requires the use of the TRX Suspen-
sion Trainer, a highly portable per-
formance training tool that leverages
gravity and the users body weight to
enable hundreds of exercises for every
ftness goal. Created by Randy Hetrick,
CEO of Fitness Anywhere and former
Navy SEAL, the TRX was an invention
of necessity for Hetrick and his SEAL
teammates to maintain peak physical
readiness while deployed in the feld.
The TRX has evolved into the ideal
training tool for Tamarac instructors
to guide participants through body-
weight exercises to deliver a fun and
challenging total-body workout.
Suspension Training bodyweight
exercise allow users to self-adjust
the amount of resistance they want,
making it suitable for people of all ft-
ness levels by making small changes
in foot, hand or body position; this
capability empowers participants to
continue with training, even when
fatigue sets in. This versatility makes
the TRX attractive to so many users,
including elite athletes in every ma-
jor sports league, all branches of the
military, and ftness enthusiasts at all
levels.
Were very excited to bring TRX
Suspension Training to our facility
and feel that it is a great way to differ-
entiate ourselves from other wellness
centers, said Gretchen Bush, ftness
manager. Integrating TRX training
also allows us to maximize our space
so we can provide more value to our
citizens.
TRX training appeals equally to
men and women of all ftness levels
because users can precisely control
how challenging they want each exer-
cise to be, said Randy Hetrick, CEO
of Fitness Anywhere. I know how to-
days fast-paced lifestyle often makes
it diffcult to ft in a quality workout.
With Suspension Training, you can
get a fun, effective total body workout
in 25 minutes. This makes it much
easier for people to incorporate ft-
ness into their daily lives.
Since its introduction to the mar-
ketplace in 2005, TRX Suspension
Training has proven to be the ideal
solution for personal, small and large
group functional training and has
been rolled out in top gyms across
the country, including Crunch, New
York Sports Clubs, and Equinox. It is
used and trusted by trainers, athletes,
physical therapists, and all branches
of the military. Its popularity with
professional athletes and team train-
ing rooms is exploding across the NFL,
NBA, MLB, NHL, UFC and NCAA.
The performance training commu-
nity, including world class condition-
ing coaches such as Todd Durkin and
Mark Verstegen, and elite personal
trainers like Gunnar Petersen and
Bob Harper are embracing Suspen-
sion Training bodyweight exercise as
a tried and true ftness method appro-
priate for all ftness levels.
For more information on TRX
Suspension Training classes, visit
www.tamaracwellness.org or contact
Gretchen Bush at (231) 924-1781.

Splashdown kicks off
in Stanton
STANTON Several Stanton pastors announce Splash-
down, Central Montcalms newest childrens program for
second, third and fourth graders. Other elementary children
are also welcome if they have a qualifying sibling.
Technically, Splashdown is neither a day care, nor an
offcial after-school program. Its an afternoon Christian
education program where, for a small fee, children can go
between the time school is dismissed and 6 p.m. It picks
up where school leaves off offering life skills training, adult
mentors, homework assistance and Bible training.
This daily program is similar in design to other kinds
of faith-community sponsored kids programs, said Jamey
Nichols, pastor of Stantons First Congregational Church
where the program is held. A handful of Stanton churches
have cooperated for several years now on projects like this
one. Our hope is to meet yet another need in the community
by offering latchkey children a safe, biblically-based, learn-
ing environment.
For more information or to register your child, call the
church offce at (989) 831-5240 or visit fccstanton.org.

She started playing the piano at church

of the First Baptist Church of Howard City;
their church is a very big part of their lives.
They both enjoy camping and have traveled
extensively throughout the west. They enjoy
their friends and family at their winter home

When asked about serving as grand mar-

Something we werent expecting but very
honored to be asked!

Deputies investigating
Edmore home invasions
Montcalm County Sheriffs Deputies are investigating
several home invasions which occurred between 4 to 7 p.m.,
on Saturday, Aug. 27 in the Edmore area.
A resident interrupted one of the crimes when he ar-
rived home. They spoke with two subjects who were driv-
ing out of the driveway. The suspects had told a story that
they were looking to buy a puppy. The suspects then left. The
homeowners subsequently found their door had been forced
open.
The suspects are described as two, white males in their
20s. The driver had a slender build and the passenger was
heavier set. They were driving a black minivan. The victim
described the minivan as having a fat black paint fnish.

Since making their debut in
1946, baby boomers have cre-
ated tremendous social change
in the United States, with their
epic numbers and independent
spirit impacting everything
from politics to pop culture,
transforming the makeup of
the American family and work-
force, and ushering in a new
wave of consumerism and soci-
etal norms. As the frst boomers
turn 65 this year, the generation
will once again make history.
At a rate of 10,000 a day,
or one every eight seconds,
boomers are becoming eligible
for Medicare, marking the be-
ginning of the largest member
surge since the programs in-
ception and creating an even
greater need for Medicare edu-
cation for frst-time enrollees.
Those new to the program
may feel overwhelmed by the
process of sorting through their
options for Medicare cover-
age, but resources are avail-
able to help boomers navigate
the Medicare maze, notes Tom
Paul, chief executive offcer of
UnitedHealthcare Medicare &
Retirement.
It is critical that boomers,
and everyone eligible for Medi-
care, take the time to educate
themselves on all available cov-
erage options in order to make a
confdent health care decision,
said Paul. As a generation
thats been the target of mar-
keting campaigns since child-
hood, boomers are known for
being savvy consumers. They
should put those skills to use as
they shop for Medicare cover-
age that will meet their health
needs and also ft in their bud-
get.
The frst step to being a
smart Medicare shopper is to
understand the programs four
main parts, or the ABCs of
Medicare:
n Part A helps pay for inpa-
tient care in hospitals, skilled
nursing facilities or hospice and
for home health care if certain
conditions are met.
n Part B helps pay for medi-
cally necessary outpatient ser-
vices such as doctor visits. Part
A and Part B together are re-
ferred to as Original Medicare.
n Part C is also known as
Medicare Advantage. These
plans are offered by private in-
surers, such as UnitedHealth-
care, and are approved by
Medicare to provide all Part A
and Part B services. These plans
often include prescription drug
coverage and other additional
benefts.
n Part D plans are offered
by private insurers and provide
coverage of both brand-name
and generic prescription drugs.
Once theyve mastered the
basic structure of Medicare,
boomers should ask a few key
questions to help lead them
to the coverage thats right for
them:
n What medications do you
currently take?
n Are you open to switching
doctors, hospitals or pharma-
cies based on a Medicare Ad-
vantage and/or a Part D plans
network?
n Do you want coverage of
additional services such as vi-
sion or dental care?
n How much are you willing
or able to pay out of your own
pocket? Are you willing to pay a
monthly premium if other out-
of-pocket expenses, such as co-
pays when you need to visit a
doctor, are lower?
n If you enroll in Original
Medicare, do you want a Medi-
care supplement plan, some-
times called a Medigap plan, to
help cover the costs that Origi-
nal Medicare doesnt cover?
Most adults can apply for
Medicare during an Initial
Enrollment Period that be-
gins three months before the
month of their 65th birthday
and ends three months follow-
ing the month of their birthday.
All Medicare benefciaries can
make changes to their coverage
during the Annual Election Pe-
riod from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Precis syNdicAte
The numbers alone are stag-
gering. Each year in the U.S.,
8 million pets end up in shel-
ters, and of these, only half fnd
new homes. Approximately
11,000 pets a day, or 4 million
each year, are euthanized, even
though most of them are adopt-
able.
Despite these overwhelming
statistics, ending pet homeless-
ness is an achievable goal and
everyone can be part of the so-
lution. People Saving Pets, a
new social movement created
by PetSmart Charities, is dedi-
cated to saving homeless pets
and suggests fve simple actions
that anyone can taketoday
to save lives.
Adopt
If you have the time and re-
sources to care for a pet, choose
to adopt instead of buying your
pet from a breeder or pet store.
Have your heart set on a partic-
ular breed? Nearly 25 percent
of animals living in shelters are
purebreds, and many rescue
groups are dedicated to specifc
breeds.
SpAy And
neuter
If youre already planning
to adopt or currently own a pet,
have your pet spayed/neutered.
Its one of the best ways to re-
duce overcrowding in shelters
and lower euthanasia rates, yet
35 percent of the cats and dogs
living in U.S. households have
not had this simple and safe
procedure. Cats and dogs can
be spayed/neutered as early as
8 weeks old, and studies have
shown that the procedure can
provide signifcant health ben-
efts and reduce behavioral
problems.
Furthermore, price doesnt
have to keep you from doing
the right thing for your pet.
Certain clinics will provide you
with spay/neuter services at a
reduced cost sometimes even
for free. To fnd one nearby,
check out the People Saving
Pets clinic locator tool at www.
peoplesavingpets.org.
Volunteer
Cant welcome a new pet
into your family just yet? Volun-
teer at your local shelter! From
providing playtime for pets to
helping out at adoption events
or becoming a foster pet parent,
your time will make a huge dif-
ference in saving pets.
donAte
Shelters rely heavily on do-
nations. A small gift can go a
long way. If you cant donate
money, household items such as
cleaning products, garbage bags
and old blankets and towels are
also welcome.
ShAre
Perhaps the easiest way
to help save homeless pets is
to spread the word. Let your
friends, family and co-workers
know that youre passionate
about helping animals and how
they can be part of the solution.
Use social media like Facebook
and Twitter to share informa-
tion and opportunities to help
pets with your networks.
At www.peoplesavingpets.
org, you can fnd tools and re-
sources to help save pets lives,
such as an adoptable pet loca-
tor and a low-cost spay/neuter
clinic locator, and fnd opportu-
nities to volunteer and donate
to local animal welfare organi-
zations.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
CROTON TOWNSHIP
PLANNING COMMISSION
Thursday, September 22, 2011
7:00 p.m. at Township Hall
5833 E Division St. Newaygo, MI
The following proposed amendments are being recommended for changes to the Cro-
ton Township Zoning Ordinance.
SECTION 2.120 FENCES
A. All fences, articial walls, or landscaping and plantings shall be so arranged that
they do not obstruct any water views or the clear vision of the traveling public on any
public street or intersection of any street, alley, driveway, parking lot or other access.
B. Fences shall not obscure vision at the right of way or property line of the lot or par-
cel on which it is placed. No fences are permitted within the public right-of-way.
1. Fences within the required front yard shall be of a type which is see-through in
nature (i.e. chain link), so as not to obscure vision at the right-of-way or property
line of the lot or parcel on which it is placed.
C. Fences shall not exceed six feet (6) along the rear and side lot lines of an interior
lot and four feet (4) along a front lot line. Fence height shall be measured from the
nished grade (elevation) of the ground immediately below the location of the fence.
There is no setback for a fence; however the fence must be placed on the inside of the
property line. Regulations differ for waterfront lots and corner lots.
1. A fence may be erected on a wall or berm; however the combined height of the
wall or berm and fence shall not exceed the allowable fence height.
D. All fences shall be constructed with the nished side facing the adjoining lot of
any abutting right-of-way with the support posts placed on the inside in a manner
which serves to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the neighborhood or surround-
ing area.
E. Fences shall be situated so as to ensure safe ingress and egress from any lot or
property in cases of emergency.
F. No fence shall be constructed so as to prevent normal maintenance on any existing
building.
G. No fence in the Water Overlay Zone or on a lot with frontage on a lake, river or tribu-
tary shall be located within thirty feet (30) of the ordinary high water mark or within
ten feet (10) of the break in the bank.
H. Unless specically authorized elsewhere in this Ordinance, no fence, wall or screen
located within the side yard or rear yard in any Residential District shall exceed six feet
(6) in height from the natural grade. Fences for Agricultural use may exceed the limi-
tations stated in the subparagraph, if necessary, for the containment of animals, but
only with a Special Land Use permit. Fences erected for the containment of animals
which are not native to the State of Michigan or which require a State or Federal permit
for said containment shall require a Special Land Use Permit. The conditions for the
Special Land Use Permit will be based on Federal or State requirements.
I. Barbed wire fence only permitted for agricultural fencing used for bona de farming
for the containment of livestock. Except the reasonable use of barbed wire is allowed
along the top of security fences which protect the public or properties such as storage
yards, transfer stations, public utilities, impoundment lots, etc. On such fences the
barbed wire will be at least six feet (6) above ground level.
J. On waterfront lots, fences, walls, screens and other structures that are located
between the main building and the waterfront shall be of an open air type and see-
through in nature (i.e. chain link). In addition, fences as permitted in paragraph G in
the Water Overlay District shall not exceed three feet (3) in height along the break in

You Eat What You Are
It is fairly easy to understand that our body becomes what we eat. But to understand that we eat what we are we have
to look at how we select food.
In ancient days, many times there was not much choice. We ate when food was available and there were frequently
periods of starvation. Today, most of us have an abundance of choices. If we had no outside inuences we would choose
food that we needed. Some parents are horried because their child eats dirt. Really that child is decient in minerals and
is trying to get them by eating the sand. Studies have shown that children will select healthy foods until they are taught
to select foods by taste.
Parental modeling and television advertising are the two big inuences on how children select food. Children learn by
watching their parents. Remember that saying? What you do speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what you say!! So if a child
sees coffee, pop, sweets, alcohol, prepackaged food, etc. all the time that is what they will learn to eat. I see children in
my ofce that would rather have an apple than a piece of candy. Why? Parental inuence!! These children are modeling
the healthy choices of their parents.
I also know children whose favorite place to eat is McDonalds. Now, we know it is not because of the exquisite cuisine.
They want a Happy Meal. Why? Highly successful advertising!! The Fast Food industry is very good at marketing to children.
They know that if the kids nag enough, the parents will take them to McDonalds (or what ever burger joint is offering the
best prize that week).
The bottom line is: we select food based on our thoughts. I often see a thin person in a cafeteria saying, I can eat
anything I want and never gain a pound. Then there is the person who says, This dessert will make we gain 10 pounds.
Both are right. What we say and how we think about food has a huge impact on our systems. I often
have heard patients who are struggling with their weight say things like, I sometimes nd myself
eating without even realizing I am doing it and I am not even hungry. These are examples of how
our automatic thoughts have an impact on our body, our weight, and on our over-all health.
So, if our automatic thoughts inuence our food selection, we need to look at where we are.
If everything is good, there is no need to change. But, if we have allergies, are over weight, have
joint problems, experience asthma, ght diabetes, maybe we need to change our thinking. Learn
to eat consciously and decide purposefully what to eat and how much to eat. Stop just eating
automatically. Things like hypnosis can help change our automatic thought process, but thinking
and choosing with awareness and purpose is really a better approach. It puts us in control and gives
us a sense of mastery over our selves. The more control we can have over these simple things the
better outcomes we can have in our whole lives.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Show me the money. Granting a conservation ease-
ment during your lifetime will allow you to take a
federal income tax deduction of up to 30%, spread
over 5 years. Farmers may also be entitled to a re-
fundable tax credit against state income tax. And,
after-death grants are possible. They lower the tax
on your estate. You arent paid money for the ease-
ment, but you save money.
Keep land in the family. Usually, following the
easement donation the property taxes drop because
the assessor must reassess the property since the
landowners value has been reduced by the value of
the easement given away. There is also a 15 cent per
acre discount in property taxes due for certain types
of commercial forests if the forest will be subject to
a sustainable forestry conservation easement. Thus,
land will be more likely to stay in the family, being
less saleable as less usable, and, property taxes will
be greatly reduced - nice benets.
How does it work? First nd a recipient who wants
the easement. Then hire the experts to handle the
creation of the easement. When all is said and done,
the landowner keeps possession of the land and the
recipient owns most of the development rights.
Rights have strings attached. The recipients
rights are restricted. They must either (a) limit what
the recipient can do with the land, for example pro-
hibit removing structures or natural formations and
developing it for residential use, or (b) obligate the
recipient to do something. Examples: protect the
natural beauty or scenic vistas, assure its availabil-
ity for agricultural use and farming, or maintain and
enhance the existing water quality.
Three essential characteristics. Conservation
easements are perpetual and irrevocable. Second,
the recipient must qualify as a local, state or federal
body or a charitable 501(c)(3) organization. Lastly,
the easements purpose must be one of these four:
Outdoor recreation or education of the general pub-
lic (hiking, boating, preserve, shing, swimming,
etc.); protection of a relatively natural habitat (such
as for parks, wildlife, ecosystems, refuges, etc.);
preservation of open space (farm- or forest-land
yielding a signicant scenic view, etc.); historic
preservation (near an historic district or meeting the
National Registers requirements).
The Cost. Costs are small compared with savings,
but they are many. An attorney structures and writes
the easement documents. Title work declares you
hold unfettered title. A CPA prepares tax returns. A
surveyor might be needed. It might cost to reacquire
severed gas or mineral rights the recipient wants. If
the easement is for forest management, you pay for
a stewardship or management plan. Understandably
the recipient may also require you to donate money
for a land management fund.
Being Popular. National Land Trust Census data
showed that state and local land trusts possessed
conservation easements over more than 6 million
acres in 2005 compared with just over 2 million
acres in 2000. Since 2009, over million acres
have been protected in Michigan.
Beautiful Michigan, beautiful music. Conserva-
tion Easements help preserve Michigans beauty,
while savings and benets are beautiful music to
your ears. If you own large or unusual tracts of
land that you love and want to preserve, consider a
conservation easement.

Living Room
On Wheels
By Craig W. Armstrong
We have all been there-with a friend or a co-
worker, possibly even the boss. You have to go
somewhere and they want to drive. You open the
passenger door and you cant even sit down. You
assume there is a seat under the fast food bags,
the empty coffee cups, books, papers from work,
some old mail, an ice scraper, gum wrappers, kids
toys, some CDs and...youre not sure but is that a
can of aerosol cheese? Their comment is always
the same: Just throw that stuff in the back.
Obviously these drivers need help in keeping their
cars interior clean. In an extreme case they could
start with a shovel, but there are steps we can all
heed to take care of the inside of our cars.
Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the
key. Clean out your car once a week. If you spend
any time in your car you are going to accumulate
stuff during the course of a week. To keep these
items from taking over the interior, you can throw
them away, organize them in the car or move
them out of the car.
Two culprits of a cluttered interior are kids and
your job. Your little ones are so cute and sweet,
making those adorable comments from the back-
seat that youll later post on Facebook. But lets
face it; most of these little angels can be pigs. Its
just part of being a kid, but no less annoying. The
best way to keep kids from cluttering the car is
by providing a garbage container. Either buy one
or have the kids make one by decorating a good-
sized canvas bag. (This might even give them a
feeling of ownership and a desire to use it.)
Youre going to have stuff from work and for
work. The key here is organization. If you dont
have a briefcase or other handled bag, get one.
Use folders, binders, manila envelopes...whatever
it takes. You may not have time to le everything
the moment you get it or need to use it, but make
time at the end of the day (or week) to move ev-
erything to a designated spot.
No matter how hard you try to keep it out, dirt is
going to be tracked into your car. So add vacuum-
ing to the schedule. Every week, get rid of the
clutter, sweep the oor and shake out the oor
mats. If your pet travels with you, your weekly
cleaning will include brushing out pet hair.
By doing a weekly sweep, youll make month-
ly cleaning much easier. Once a month, shine the
plastic, clean the glass, polish or brush the uphol-
stery and remove any recent stains. When youre
done, top off your efforts with a little air fresh-
ener.
Keeping your cars interior clean is a worthwhile
endeavor, but you wont be able to keep it spot-
less all the time. Youll probably nd a French
fry between the seat cushions from time to time.
However, with a commitment to weekly and
monthly upkeep, your car will be ready (without
embarrassment) for passengers.

Automotive Guide
Understanding Oil
By Craig W. Armstrong
You regularly get your cars oil changed, but do you ever won-
der why?
Sometimes referred to as a cars lifeblood, oil keeps the en-
gine clean and lubricates its parts at the same time. Oil also
transfers heat away from the combustion cycle. Sound compli-
cated? Its really not.
A cars engine is full of metal surfaces that move at extremely
high speeds. If these parts didnt have oil between them, they
would rub together and the friction would tear them apart. At
the same time the oil is keeping the surfaces apart, it is also
transferring heat away.
OK, so that makes sense, but how can something as dirty as oil
keep a cars engine clean. Its actually pretty cool. An engine
operates by combustion. In the simplest terms, a tiny explosion
occurs, causing a piston to go up and down. This part of the
process and many others produce many by-products. These by-
products include silicon oxide and acids, which can be harmful
to the engines parts. This is where the cleaning part comes
in. Oil holds these contaminates in suspension and keeps them
from forming on the engine.
You hear the term viscosity associated with oil. Viscosity is
dened as the property of a uid that resists the force to cause
the uid to ow. Basically that means how much pressure can
it withstand before it moves. When you see a container of oil
marked SAE 10W40, what does it mean? First, the SAE stands
for The Society of Automotive Engineers. The numbers tell
you about the oils viscosity.
The higher the number, the more resistant to ow; the lower
the number, the easier it ows. Oil marked 10W40 means that
it can ow at a 10 viscosity grade when its cold and a 40 vis-
cosity grade when its hot, with the W meaning winter.
Keep this in mind; oil gets thicker when its cold and thin-
ner when its hot. When its cold (which makes oil thicker),
it must remain thin enough to ow (10); when its hot (which
makes oil thinner), it must able to remain thick enough to do
its job (40). In essence, youre getting oil that can work all year
around.
With this in mind, lets say that you live where it gets really
cold in the winter and stays mild in the summer. Then an SAE
5W30 oil might be the best for your car...make sense?
As for how often to get your oil changed...the debate rages on.
The safest bet is to go by what the owners manual says.
Now you can see why its important to have your oil changed.
Its got a lot to do and after a while it will lose the ability work
properly. The next time someone says I need to get my oil
changed, you can say, let me tell you a little something about
oil.
