World Corps is a non profit, non- governmental organization founded by colleagues from six

different nations in 1998 and was headquartered in Seattle , Washington , USA. World Corps later
expanded to Brazil, Mexico, India, Philipines and Kenya.

World Corps Kenya (WCK) see www.worldcorps.or.ke was started in 2000 as a project under an
organization called Forest Action Network (FAN) and was fully registered as an independent NGO
in 2003. Since then WCK has been running several programs which include , Provision and
facilitation of trainings to rural youths and women, Running of youth exchange programs and
volunteer programs.

Our mission is to provide training and infrastructure to rural youths in developing countries to become effective business
entrepreneurs, community leaders and global citizens.
Our currents projects are;

1. Long and medium Term (LMTV) program. We have international volunteers being attached
to either our organization , or in other organizations, community based organizations (CBOs) and
communities that we partner with for a period of 1 month to 2 years depending on the period that
the volunteer is available and also the level of need of each project. The volunteers offer their skills
to the placements and at the same they are able to interact with the community where they are
accommodated in a host family situation.

2. Ecological and sustainability development project

The project is currently running in the semi arid district of Magadi of the great Rift valley province,
south of Kenya near Kenya / Tanzania border.There are three key areas in which this project entails:

 Development of the business and financial capacity of the disadvantaged magadi community
entrepreneurs and small business owners by building on the market sensitization, linking
them to other micro finance institutions and mainstram businesses to enhance local
economic development, increase access to markets, and to create employment especially for
the youth.
 Empowering the local youths to set up an eco- tourism community project by tapping into
the hot springs along lake Magadi. WCK has been providing education, training incentives
and technical support to increase community capacity to manage the eco tourism project.
 Building the capacity of the community on management of the eco system by exposing them
to drought preparedness techniques ans assist them in establishing water catchment
structures to deal with the wastage of excess water that causes flooding during rainy season.

3. Strengthening of the World Corps Community Information Centers (CICs)

This CICs were set by WCK during our previous project in the same region of magadi . These
centers provide essential services to the community which include telephone and fax services;
computer services (printing and typing) and they are solar powered. The centers are managed by
world Corps Professionals (WCP); youths from the community who have been given training by
WCK on the computers and management skills. Some of the CICs are underused thereby require
community sensitization and relocation to other areas where they are needed most.

4. Setting up of a community Resource center in Magadi

World Corps Kenya is in the process of setting up a resource center in Magadi in partnership with
the community and the Magadi Soda, a salt processing firm based in the area which will be providing
the premises.

5. International work camps

World Corps launched work camps from the month of July 2008 with the main activities being the
reconstruction of areas where homes were destroyed by the violence that rocked our country after
the announcement of the results of disputed elections. These reconstruction camps will be running
all the way to June 2009.

A. LONG AND MID TERM VOLUNTEERS

World Corps Kenya (WCK) has been running for over one year programs for Professional and non
professional Volunteers on a middle and long term basis. These are people with an interest working
in Kenya for a period of 3 months to 2 years, while gaining experience and passing on skills on their
area of study. Having worked in Magadi and Malindi areas of Kenya, WCK understands the value of
an educated community. Our placements would be according to ones expertise, experience and
interest, and we believe that we are well networked to provide the best placements from both within
our organization and from the network of organizations that we partner with throughout the
country.
Below are the available placements at the moment with their descriptions. NOTE: We also source
out for a specific placement incase there is a volunteer who would like to be placed in a specific field
that is not available in our posting.
There is a possibility of volunteering for a period of 1 month incase one cannot be available for our
minimum volunteering period of 3 months.

DESCRIPTION OF THE MIDDLE AND LONG TERM VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

1. WCK/LMTV 01 Wongonyi primary school
Description
Wongonyi primary school is a government run school with only the resources provided by the
government which are not enough as it is in a community that is highly marginalized lacking most of
the essentials like communication (Internet, Telephones) and electricity. The school has a phone
whose lines are run using solar power but this is also hard when the solar panel is not working. The
school has a library which is the only information and resource centre for the entire division. The
community is mostly comprised of illiterate and underprivileged families and the demand for English
speaking teachers is also very high.
The volunteers will be expected to train, run and manage the resource centre with some individuals
from the community.
They will also be able to teach English and introduction to a foreign language for those interested in
teaching this to a group of 40 to 50 in a class. Volunteers can also match their skills and interests to
the needs of community. You may also initiate local research projects for a thesis. The volunteers will
be immersed in rural village life and will spend time with warm and welcoming villagers; you will also
have the opportunity to assist villagers in areas of great importance to their community.

Location:
The school is located in Wongonyi location Mwabirwa Location in the Taita Taveta district, Coast
province. The area is agricultural based but subsistence farming as the bad road network does not
allow for transportation of goods to other areas thus increasing the poverty level. Msidu forest is a
natural indigenous forest with springs that provide running water to the surrounding community.
The available toilets are Latrines (Long drop), there is no electricity and the available transport to the
nearest big town is only available early morning and comes back in the afternoon. The nearest town
which is Voi is large and everything is available here. Mombasa which is the biggest tourist town in
Kenya with great sandy beaches and amazing sceneries is only two hours away. Neighboring this
community is Tsavo national park the home of the big five
(Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard and Rhino).Incase one has a phone or batteries to charge there are
arrangements for that. There is a health centre nearby which is the Mwambirwa health centre and a
major hospital

2. WCK/LMTV 02 Imani Children’s Home

Description
Imani is a children’s orphanage that was started to help and educate the children neighbouring the
orphanage. In the home there are children as young as one month old who have been abandoned by
their families either because they are HIV positive or their families are too poor to afford to feed
them. The people living around the orphanage are poor rely on the sporadic rainfall for some crops
to carry them through the year. The amount of rain has decreased and food provided to the
community comes in from other towns in the country making the standard of living very high. Imani
(which is the Swahili word for faith) has therefore been a source of help for many families and
children. There are an average of 20 infants and 50 grown children in the orphanage.
Location
Imani is located in Malindi which is in the Coast province of Kenya. The main headquarters is in
Nairobi and has thus expanded to Malindi. Malindi is about 550km Form Nairobi which is the
Capital of Kenya and a major tourist town with various historical sites.

3. WCK/LMTV 03 Children of the rising sun

Description
This is a children’s home that caters for the community within the area. Within the premises there is
a kindergarten and a primary school which cater for the children in the orphanage and also the
neighboring community. The community surrounding the orphanage has the culture of marrying off
their girl child at a tender age not paying much attention to education and enlightenment for them.
The home helps take care of some of this children thus doing child rescue to enable these mothers to
go to school. The home has approximately 70 children who stay within the premises and 900 who go
to the kindergarten and primary school in the compound.

4. WCK/LMTV 04 Toi Primary school (special Unit)

Description
Toi special unit was started in 1991.It is within Toi primary school in Kibera about 1km behind
Adams arcade. Toi special unit is one of many other units that were started in Nairobi with the
government policy of integration. The initial number of children who started the unit was eight, three
girls and five boys. Since then the number has been increasing and some changes have taken place by
some parents taking their children to vocational training. The number of children at this time is
eighteen with ages ranging from eight to twenty two years of age. Currently they have a workshop
where bigger children are trained in carpentry, tailoring and weaving. So they are able to cater for the
bigger boys and girls instead of transferring them to other workshops.

5. WCK/LMTV 05 Mwakitau Secondary School

Description
Mwakitau secondary is situated in Maktau location,Mwatate division in Taita taveta district of the
Coast province of Kenya.Its located in Tsavo west national park buffer zone. It’s about 40km from
voi town and 200m off Voi -Taveta road, many a times elephants are frequent visitors of the school.
The school was begun in 2004 with a population often students but has since grown to form four
level with a total of ninety students. Currently the school has only two Teachers Service commission
teachers other teachers have been employed by the board of governors who have faced an uphill task
in paying the salaries for these teachers since the school is still young and financially incapacitated.
The poverty levels among the locals have really contributed towards the problem since most students
have big fees balances. Many students have dropped out due to lack of huge fee balances.

6. WCK/LMTV 06 Dyer and Blair Investment Bank

Description

Dyer and Blair was founded in 1954 as a partnership of stockbrokers and is one of the oldest stock
broking companies in Kenya. It was originally launched as a partnership of Hickman and Grey and
was one of the founding members of the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE), which was established in
the same year. In 1965, the Company's ownership changed hands when Mr. Derek Ingram Dyer and
Mr. Patrick Murdoch Blair took over Hickman and Grey; it then became Dyer and Blair.

On October 1, 1973, Kenya Commercial Bank Limited acquired the partnership of Dyer and Blair
and incorporated it into a limited liability company. The Company then operated as a wholly-owned
subsidiary of the Bank. In 1983, its ownership changed when the present shareholders acquired the
Company. Since then, the Company has grown significantly and expanded the range of products and
services, making it one of the leading stockbrokerage firms in Kenya.

As one of the original six founder members of the Nairobi Stock Exchange, Dyer and Blair has
played a pivotal role in the development of the stock market; more notably in the switch from a Call
over Trading System to the present Open Outcry Trading System. From 1966 to 1990 Dyer and Blair
Limited was solely responsible for compiling the Nairobi Stock Exchange 17 Share Index. This
responsibility was taken over by the Nairobi Stock Exchange when it established its Secretariat in July
1990.

Currently the principal activities of Dyer and Blair Limited are Stock broking specializing in high net
worth investors, corporate finance and investment advisory. The firm is emerging as a full service
investment banker after it led the first underwriting services in Kenya to the 2006 Scan Group IPO.
In addition the company also doe the following activities: Floatation, providing technical support to
companies seeking a listing in the Nairobi stock exchange, underwriting of primary security issues,
equity and debt research, private placements and portfolio review and recommendation, corporate
finance corporate debt issuance and trading. Mergers and acquisition actively promoting and

involved in training personnel in investment banking.

7. WCK/LMTV 07 SISDO
Description
SISDO is a microfinance institution (MFI).SISDO contributes to development through provision of
reliable and affordable financial services to entrepreneurs for wealth creation and improved
livelihoods. SISDO has a strategic objective to reach all parts of Kenya by 2010.

SISDO Goals
 Provide appropriate loan products to small holder farmers and micro/small entrepreneurs
within the target operational areas.
 Provide the mobilization of savings (Collateral deposits) among the clients.
 Provide business training to target clients through a cost sharing agreements to develop their
capacities.
 Increase Clients outreach, household/business income and improve their asset base.

SISDO headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya and branch offices located in urban centres in
four of the eight Kenyan provinces namely, Eastern, Central, Rift Valley and Nairobi.

8. WCK/LMTV 08 Butula Umoja Community based organization and

Bumutiru Community Dispensary
Description
Butula Umoja is a community based organization (CBO) registered with the ministry of culture and
social services. It has a total of 210 members of different categories and background and has come
up with different projects to empower the community and generate income for the members. Top
most is Mushroom farming and has proposals for butterfly farming that it hopes to employ soon.
Apart from the farming projects the CBO also is a stakeholder in the dispensary in the area.
Bumutiru community dispensary which is situated at shibale market less than 50 metres from Butula
Umoja CBO offices. The facility caters for over half the population of lower Esikoma sub-location
thus will have a greater impact to the community at large who are the intended beneficiaries.
They will also be expected to make frequent visits to the village sites where health group seminars
and outreach free medical camps will be conducted based on the program developed by the
volunteers and the local contact (Butula Umoja CBO)

Ugenya Community Against HIV/Aids (U.C.A.H.A) youth organization is an indigenous community
based organization founded on 14/07/2003 with a view to participating in the discovery,
transmission and preservation of morals and to stimulate the productive life, economic and cultural
development among the youth. Since inception, it endeavors to build the capacity of the rural youth
to be the architects of their own development and be part of progressive global efforts geared
towards youth empowerment.

10. WCK/ LMTV 11 Academic Health & Agricultural Development Initiative

(AHADI)

Description
AHADI was registered as a Non Governmental Organization on March 2007. It came into existence
as a result of several community Based Organizations and individuals with similar goals coming
together to form an organization that would propel the rural communities to greater heights in
education, health and economy through meaningful development strategies.

The following are the organizations affiliated with AHADI:

1. Faith Health Care Center- Registered in 2004 as a CBO in Nakuru district with the goal of
improving the primary health care of residents of Mau forest (Ogiek) and Olenguruone
Division.
2. Manyatta Health Care Services- Operate in Kericho Town and providing health services
to the low income residents of Nyagacho, a slum in kericho. Registered in 2003.
3. Kimori/Kobel mission schools- Founded in 1998 with the goal of providing basic
education, it is now sponsoring with other donors more than 100 orphans and poor
children. Kobel mission was founded to assist reduce the congestion in Kimori academy.
4. Konoin Community Library- As the name implies the library is a community initiative
with the purpose of providing library services to the residents of Konoin constituency so as
to reduce illiteracy and promote reading culture among the residents.
5. Etwe Young Farmers Self Help Group- Is a CBO registered and operating in Cheptalal
location in Bureti district with the goal of encouraging the youth to participate in farming
practices.
6. Neranik Youth Group- Is a registered Youth CBO operating in Kiptenden location in
Bureti District.
7. Kipkoibet Professional Jua Kali Youth group- is a youth group which does metal
fabrication in the rural part of Bureti district.
AHADI emphasize the crucial role of strong grassroots Organizations to forge new models for
partnerships involving government, business and community based Organizations to extend,
improve and sustain health, education and economic services for rural communities.

5.0 WHAT WE DO
AHADI works in partnership with other NGOs, the government, the private sector, the corporate
organizations and community Based organizations with similar objectives.
Our programs revolve around our goals. These are education, health, HIV/AIDS and Agriculture.

5.1 Education
We recognize that many poor children and orphans are likely to drop from school due to several
reasons. Free primary education in Kenya has led to an increase in the number of pupils enrolling in
schools. This has put pressure on resources in many schools including classes and teacher pupil ratio
leading to poor performance in examinations. Other factors that affect access to education include;
geographical remoteness; cultural practices like early marriages and female genital mutilation; poverty;
HIV/AIDS.

11. WCK /LMTV 12 Wongonyi Community Development

Job title: Program Officer Volunteer

Major objective:
To help the remote community of Wongonyi realize its hidden potential in various areas which
include, business development, women empowerment, youth mentoring and micro finance
management.

Qualifications:

Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Chief (local government administrator at village level), and the village
youth and women group leaders, the volunteer would help in:
 Assist in the development and management of women groups
 Youth mentoring.
 Training in business development

 Community sensitization on various issues affecting the community.

Orientation and training:

The volunteer will be given a 3 days orientation by the worldcorps staff. The volunteer will also work
with someone from the community on a full time basis.

Commitment:
Minimum commitment of 1 month at a time during or at the end of the volunteer period, a
commitment to a further period at time is possible. Approximately one month’s notice of intention
to leave is requested so that a replacement may be found.

Time and place: The volunteer will be working for 7 hours a day, Monday through Friday from 9
am to 4 pm. The place of work is Wongonyi village.

Working conditions: There is no electricity; the volunteer can come up with their own programs
that will add value to the community.

12. WCK/LMTV 13 Magadi Community Resource Center

Job title: Computer Tutor

Major objective:
To train the Magadi and Ngurumani community, who are mainly the maasai to acquire skills in
computers so that they can effectively utilize the services offered by the World Corps Kenya
Resource Center. This will enable them to access information necessary for their development, ease
communication and form partnerships with the rest of the world.
The volunteer will assist in a big way in ensuring that the community members are well trained.

Qualifications:

O Knowledge in Ms Word, Excel, Power point and Internet use should be the minimum level
of qualification.
O Some experiences in community development
O Self motivated and willing to work with poor community.

B. WORK CAMPS FOR PEACE AND RECONSTRUCTION

Kenya was faced with a challenging situation that was born out of the December 2007 General
Elections. The Political crisis that Kenya faced requires extra ordinary and concerted efforts to be
resolved. As World Corps Kenya (WCK) we are deeply concerned by the current crisis and would
like to step up our efforts to find a lasting solution to the effects of the post electoral violence that
rocked the country after the December 30th 2007 general elections. Now that peace has returned to
the country due to the agreement on power sharing by the two big political parties, World corps is
committed to a peace process that will bring tranquility and understanding among Kenyan
communities and has brought together more than 100 youths from the Rift Valley province which
witnessed the most grizzly of the skirmishes in the whole country as well as youth serving
organizations to address the crisis through a unique initiative called Work camps for peace and
reconstruction. The volunteers will assist in reconstructing house units which were set a blaze as well
as in other peace and reconciliation initiatives which will help bridge the gap of the worrying and the
fighting communities in the Rift Valley province and hence bring healing. The Work camps will run
for three weeks.
It is possible for volunteers also to donate clothing, household equipments or equivalent to be
distributed to the affected community members during the work camps.

Work: The type of work that will be done in this project is mainly road building and brick making.
The people live below the poverty level yet they are hard working, land is fertile with a lot of produce
only having circumstances against them such as poor road network, leading to poor transport
conditions thus the people can not transport their produce to the market. The volunteers will work
with the local community mainly the youth which will enable them to interact, share and put into
action best practices that they each have through cultural exchange. The theme of the camp will be
capacity building through road repair and environmental conservation.

Accommodation: WCK will provide locally available foodstuffs bought from the community. There
will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also be of assistance
and they will be accommodated in centers of classrooms provided by the host community.
Location: Wongonyi is a beautiful, picturesque and hilly area which borders the Tsavo national park
and is about 2 hours from Mombasa town.

Work: The volunteers will work with the entire community. Most of the people are farmers and the
challenge facing this community is the bad road network. The main objective of the work camp will
be to inspire and encourage the community, foster cultural exchange and international understanding.
The main work that the volunteers will do is building a road that will open the community to the
outside world and make it easily accessible.
Accommodation: WCK will provide locally available foodstuffs bought from the community. There
will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also be of assistance
and they will be accommodated in centers or classrooms provided by the host community.

Work: The volunteers will assist the communities in establishing and setting up income generating
activities as well as seek ways of ending the cattle raiding between the two communities and come up
with a sustainable solution.

Work: The main activity here will be reconstructing of the house units, renovating schools and
assisting with the farming. There will also be school outreach programs to insist on the need for
peace
Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in one of community member’s homes as
he owns to houses, which are unoccupied. They have the necessary facilities that are bathroom, pit
latrine and ample cooking area. WCK will provide locally available foodstuffs bought from the
community. There will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could
also be of assistance.
Location: Chepilati is in the Bureti district which is found in the South Rift between the Kericho
and Bomet district.

Work: Mwambirwa area is mainly a Man-made forest that has been mostly destroyed by the forest
fires and other human activities like lumbering. The volunteers will mainly work with the community
bordering this forest and the main objective is to raise awareness on importance of forest
conservation and restoration to old state. The participants will also help the community to
understand community development by appreciating the natural environment and also having a sense
of responsibility for their resources. The main activities will be tree planting, creating awareness on
resource management and road building.

Work: The volunteers will mainly partner with the youth groups from the community. The main
activity will be road building as the road is extremely bad, helping to repair classrooms, building
gabions to conserve the top soil by preventing soil erosion due to steepness of the area. The main
objective of the camp is the aspect of cultural exchange and also learning through experience for the
volunteers as well community members.
Accommodation: WCK will provide locally available foodstuffs bought from the community. There
will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also be of assistance
and they will be accommodated in centers or classrooms provided by the host community.

WCK 24/SHIBALE BUSIA 05/07- 19/07 CONS/ENVI 30vols

Work: The project is a partnership between WCK and the Busia Umoja Community based
organization (CBO) which is a youth group situated in the entire constituency. The group is involved
in income generating activities like mushroom farming and sensitizing the community on the need to
conserve the environment. They have identified projects that are already running in Shibale where
they are building stalls in the market and making compost pits to be used for disposing organic food
wastes from the market. There will be clean up exercises around the market. The aim of the project is
to improve the quality and safety of the foodstuffs sold at the market by providing compost pits for
the waste and encouraging the use of stalls instead of putting foodstuffs on the floor.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in Bumutiru secondary school in one of the classrooms
and dormitory not used by students. The school is situated about one kilometer from the work
station. There will be someone onsite to prepare the volunteer’s food but the volunteers could also
be of assistance.
Location: Shibale is in Busia district in the western province of Kenya. It is one and a half hours
from Kisumu which is a town near the Lake Victoria.
