Artisan Teacher Training Day 1

Neural Nature: You can improve your talents by 50%; Your nontalents only 15%

Nontalent - Do 1 of these: get a little better, get a partner, make a support system, overwhelm NT with T, just don't do it.

Trace Your Talents: Look for top of the head instant responses; things you yearn for; things that satisfy you

Themes - 23 of them

Types of Talent: Latent (dev. by making aware); Conscious (dev. with skill building); Strength (dev. by teaching others)

The 23 Talents of the Artisan Teacher

Connection Teaching new curriculum by identifying & building on past learning & experience. Learning-centered teachers connect todays learning to past learning and experiences Learning-centered teachers guard against misconceptions Learning-centered teachers maximize connections & minimize misconceptions

Artisan Teacher Training Day 1 Common Causes of Misconceptions- a misconception feels just like learning. If during a misconception, a teacher asks a student if he/she understands, the student almost always says, yes. 1. lack of processing time 2. oversimplifying the complex 3. teaching in 2D In order to maximize connections & minimize misconceptions, most field experiences should be planned early in the unit so teachers can connect back to the groups shared experiences. Tips for making connections & avoiding misconceptions The connection must be in the past experience of the learner. The connection should be made through active participation. Watch for unexpected misconceptions. The critical attributes of the connection must match the critical attributes (the parts of a learning objective that are essential & unvarying) of the learning.

Personal Relevance Linking new learning to students survival and/or immediate well-being Personally relevant (not interesting) curriculum produces the highest level of achievement. What are things that motivate them? Middle School peers, appearance 2 Step Process to Create Personal Relevance 1. Identify issues & contexts that are personally relevant to your students 2. Embed curriculum into these personally relevant issues & contexts

Mental Models (Whole Brain Learning Experience) Gascon 9/8/11

Artisan Teacher Training Day 1 Employing images, sensory representations, symbol systems, & creative processing methodologies to create mental frameworks for learning When the teacher provides both words & pictures, it helps the brain create a structure, or mental model. Whenever youve got a lot of words, provide non-linguistic organizer: pictures, images, graphs, & charts. When you have a lot of visual stimulation, provide sensory representation: Playdoh discs for lunar cyclescut using cups Created through the simultaneous use of words & pictures Created through the simultaneous use of symbol systems & sensory representations Created through the simultaneous use of varied processing methodologies
