Anteater
African Elephant
There are many succesful Origami Elephants, but i've always found it hard designing them. Their distinctive features, such as their huge ears and trunk makes it hard to get the proportions right and to make it look appealing to other folders. The ears are made from one small flap other than two big separate flaps. This is also my only succesful Elephant design to date.

Paper used: Kami Time to fold it: 1 hour Level of complexity: Simple No. of Sheets: 16 (square)
1. Valley fold horizontally and vertically. Mountain fold diagonally in both directions..
2. Form a preliminary base. Fold the top left edge to the centre and then unfold. Reverse fold (inside) along this crease.
4. Mountain fold (backwards) the remaining flap's (on the left) edge towards the center crease.
5. Fold the (reverse folded) flap on the right towards the left.
6. Mountain fold (backwards) the top right flap towards the center.
8. Fold the last remaining flap on the right hand side towards the center crease.
9. Now fold one flap from the left hand side to the right. You should have 2 flaps on each side.
10. Take the top left side flap (reverse folded flap) and hold it at 90 degrees to the rest of the model.
11. You will have 1 flap on the left, 2 on the right and 1 upright facing you. Gently push open the flap facing you, with your thumb, so as to form a petal shape.
12. Your unit will look like this. Make 16 such units.
(b) (a)
10. Interlock the flaps (a) and (b) where (a) is the single mountina folded flap on the left of one unit, and (b) is the valley folded rear flap on the right of the second unit.
11. These are 2 of the units interlocked. Continue till all 16 are interlocked / connected.

Here a crease pattern for one of the most anatomically accurate, origami tiger beetles around! The right side of the crease pattern shows the preliminary box pleat design for the river assignment, and the left shows the foldable creases (dashed is mountain and solid is valley). For folding the model, use a large sheet (15 inches or greater) that is very thin and strong. Be sure that the sheet is sized because some serious wet shaping is required at the end! Here are the steps to folding the model: Pre-crease a 60/60 unit grid (be careful not to get creases where the top of the abdomen will be exposed), pre-crease all of the diagonals (red lines) shown in the crease pattern, collapse the base, and shape. Enjoy!
