SST cma was inspired to design this version after seeing the plan in Radio Modeller dated December 1985 for 224” span Konet for .15 engines. Tis model was designed by John Ructer and hada wing made from a fat sheer (of lia” alsa and used a rocking servo mount for elevon contro. decided to modify the model so that it would make a reasonably ‘efcient glider. Recently in Sent Fight, were published 3 series of sections for use with swept backe fying wings and thie inspired me to build the model fist seen at Moel Farrau, To date I have sold about 10 of these Komets to people at ‘our local hls by supplying a plan anda set of veneered cores and 0 far bare fying The mode! is capable of tight loops without skewing out and will hold inverted for some time, also mukiple rolls are very easy with the throws increased (10 consecutive rolls having been achieved). The modest loading of 13.5 oz/sq fe means that the Komet wil ly in quite lighe winds 3 long as itis allowed to fy at is ‘optmum speed which seems faster ‘han other model Specification Radio: Standard size gear, using rocking servo for elevons Spm: 36" Secion: EH 2/10 Weght: IIb 10 oz Loading: 13.25 ozleq fe Building instructions Gut out from 1/16" ply and 1/8” basa a left and right hand side to arrows shown on plan, then larinate theplyand balsa using Copydex or similar. Carefully remove the cut-out shown forthe root profile. (I py is notavalable then glass the inside of the front section ahead ofthe wing and subsite the 1/8” balsa for 3/16" hard bale). ‘Add crianguar gussets where shown then fic in place formers 2 and3. When dry pull the fuselage at front and reat together and fix formers | and 4 in pace Glue the wing panels together with the wing upside down on the building board so that dihedral is given by the tapering of wing only. Uifcesied a small amount of dihedral can be added to lore any impression of anhedral) ‘Cut out holes for servos as shown then add Vie false Ue and Soft balsa tp blocks, finaly sand the wing to shape. Next, side wing into fuselage, when central, tack glue in place Fill any gaps That's neat Phil Morgan i pleased withthe results of his efforts. Komet /63 Go PSS with our pull out ME 163 Komet by Phil Morgan Mechanical mixer arrangement works well. Use Tx mixer you have one, between wing and fuselage with offcuts of balsa, Make up torque rods from I2swg piano wire or use ‘commercially available ones. Slot the traling edge stack so chat ailerons are top hinged then glue ‘walling edge in place making sure ‘thac the wing profile is maintainec Pass the torque rod ends through the fuselage sides and glue Into the slots inthe traling edges Epoxy bandage wing joie and alo where wing meets fuselage. When dry add botwom decking and top front and rear decking and also the hard balsa nose blocke “Tack glue two strips of 1/4” balea into hatch space then add two layers of 1/4 balsa on top. Remove assembly from fuselage then add a former at each end, This should sve a hollow hatch which wil give hore room for the controls, With the hatch tacked back in place, plane off cop and sides of fuselage to give a rounded appearance, Cut a slot in top decking and fix 1/8" balsa fin 0 place. Add the keel using strips of 1/2" balsa glued tothe bottom of fuselage, cut to shape then exp with 1716" ply to take landing knocks. Add wing leading edge and traling edge firings and blend in Fica clear canopy to the hatch, remave the canopy from behind the pilot and fe a bulkhead, chen csing lighe balsa, blend the canopy back te the end of the hate. F desired a sold canopy could be substituted but it would be necessary for Windows to be pained on to give the impression of gis Covering and finishing ‘Cover the mode in Solrtex and fixallerons in place using I" sips of Solarex ironed on both sides “his ges a pose fing and is also argh Paine finshed model using Humbrol ename's. Top Surfaces of wings area splincer patern of dark green and black fren (or mat bled). Undersides fing and fuselage were lige bive or grey. Fuselage top was a mottled SILENT FLIGHT - DECEMBER/JANUARY 1995, finish using dark green, blackgreen and light blue (sea small piece of sponge for this and continued half way down sides “The rocking servo is made as follows: a) Cut from ply the vertical plece which should be the same Sze asthe wing cut-out b) Also cut ‘rom py, the horizontal sen mount Cut a hole in this to take the servo then ‘chamfer the hinge line to 45 degrees so that te plate can hinge ‘down easily ) Hinge both pares together using Solartex a per ailerons Cheek that there is sfclene movement, then epoxy assembly Inco wing cut-cut Trim cut-out so that servo does not bind on sides, Inetall radio gear (my version uses standard slze servos, battery and receiver) using ball oints on. aileron tervo and metal quiklins tlsewhere. Adjust elevan ‘movements as follows; Elevator: 10 rim up and down ‘Alleron: 10 mm up. 8 mm down ‘When ready fori, increase aileron up to 15 mm but do not blink! Finally check thatthe CG is no further rearwards than indicated (10mm forward seems (OK; Set the elevons neutral with bout 1/16" reflec this seems the bese for intl fights. Note: The prototype has had fitted a tow hook for bungee launches, this was shaped) rests on the wing bandage underside view shows distinctive shape ofthis now historic design. made from 12's g piano wire and ‘was fted after the model was, finished. A hole was driled for the ‘wire ata point 50 ram behind the lie up through the keel so thatthe top of the hook (whichis 2” Fights sing his system are ‘exciting to Say the least and allow reasonable fights when al else cannot fy We are sure that you will enioy ‘this one, i es well night if and Ina blow.
