Leviticus chapter 16, specifies the tenth of Tishrei as the date on which the high priest shall
conduct a special ceremony to purge defilement from the shrine and from the people. The
heart of the ritual is that the high priest shall bring a bull and two goats as a special offering.

First, the bull is sacrificed to cleanse him and his household

from any defilement. (Leviticus 16:6). Secondly, one of the two
goats is chosen by lot to be sacrificed to purge the sin of
the whole of Israel of any similar defilement (Leviticus 16:78). Finally, the second goat is sent away, not sacrificed, to be
for cleansing of the people. The goat is marked for Azazel
and is sent away into the Wilderness and pushed off a cliff
(Leviticus 16:10). Before the goat is sent out, the high priest
lays both his hands upon its head and confesses over it all the iniquities and transgressions of
the Israelites, whatever their misdeeds, and so putting them on the head of the goat.
Figuratively, the goat then takes their sins away from them into the wilderness.

This is exactly what Yshua did for us when He died for the sins of all
man kind; He was the Sacrifice and He was the One who to the sin of
the world upon Himself and carried away and removed it as far as the
east is from the west.

You might ask, didnt Yshua fulfil the events of the Passover being the lamb of YHVH, how
can He fulfil this Feast as well? Yes, He is the Lamb of YHVH but He is also the goat that is
sacrificed as well as the scapegoat. Yshua fulfilled everything that has to do with sacrifices
because Hebrews teaches us that He will only die once for the sins of all of man.

Passover is about personal redemption where Yom Kippur is about redemption for the nation,
or in this case, the world. Sheep are associated with YHVHs people who are righteous and
goats are associated with unrighteous people.

Yshua not only died for the righteous, but also the unrighteous. They have the chance to
come into His Kingdom if they choose to follow Him because He already paid for them as
well.

This is the grace YHVH has towards all the people He had made and He gives every one the
chance to repent and follow Him. The difference between Passover and Yom Kippur is that
Passover is about repentance and following YHVH but Yom Kippur is about Judgement,
those who refused to follow will pay for their sins with their own blood (goat that is sacrificed)
and they will be cast into the wilderness far away from YHVHs House (Temple). These two
goats are symbolic of the Judgement of YHVH and the separation between the sheep and the
goats at the end of time. We see in Matthew 25 the clear message on how to treat other
believers in Messiah and you will be judged on the way you interact and care for fellow
believers. This is a time to ask forgiveness of all the times you have wronged someone or
didnt care for someone who calls themself a follower of Messiah Yshua.

The Hebrew word for scapegoat is azazel. Azazel was seen as a

type of Satan in the Book of Enoch (8:1). The sins of the people and
thus the punishment of the people were laid upon azazel the
scapegoat. He would bear the sins of the people and the
punishment of the people would be upon him. Azazel being sent into
the wilderness to a steep cliff, and pushed off the cliff. This is
understood to be a picture of Satan and his followers being cast into
the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20).
Let'
s take a closer look at this ceremony found in Leviticus 16:7-10. In Leviticus 16:8, the first
lot said, " La Adonai " (To YHWH). The second lot said, "La Azazel" (To the scapegoat). The
high priest took the two golden lots, one marked La Adonai and the other marked La Azazel,
and placed one upon the head of each animal, sealing their fate. It was considered a good
omen if the lot marked La Adonai was drawn by the priest in the right hand (spiritual), but for
40 years prior to the destruction of the temple in 70 C.E., the lot La Adonai was drawn by the
priest on the right hand (Talmud, Yoma 39a). In any event, the sins of the people were laid
upon the scapegoat (Leviticus 16:21-22). Except for the 40 years prior to the destruction of
the second temple, the lot La Adonai came out on the right hand of the priest and the lot La
Azazel came out on the left hand of the priest. This was the time when Yshua died for our sin
and the good omen changed from then.
Yshua, during His first coming was a type of the goat marked La Adonai. Yshua was a sin
offering to us as Elohim laid upon Him the sins of the whole world (Isaiah 53:1-6; 1
Corinthians 15:3; Galatians 1:3-4; 1 John 2:2; 4:10).

The Passover has to do with leaving Egypt or repentance, which is the start of your journey,
this sacrifice has to do with the end of your journey that is judgment. Your sin will be taken
away from you as you journey through the wilderness if you live a set apart life and wash
yourself with the Word. This is where Yshua will represent the second goat and will take our
sin away from us forever so that we can dwell with Him. In the ceremony of the two goats,
both goats were considered as one offering.
A crimson sash was tied around the horns of the goat marked azazel. At the appropriate time,
the goat was led to a steep cliff in the wilderness and pushed off a cliff. In connection with this
ceremony, an interesting tradition arose that is mentioned in the Mishnah. A portion of the
crimson sash was attached to the door of the temple before the goat was sent into the
wilderness. The sash would supernaturally turn from red to white as the goat met its end,
signalling to the people that Elohim had accepted their sacrifices and their sins were forgiven
and taken away from them completely. This was based upon Isaiah 1:18. As stated earlier,
the Mishnah tells us that 40 years before the destruction of the temple, the sash stopped
turning white. This, of course, was when Yshua was slain on the tree. Very interesting.

The High Priest wore 4 white garments and on top of that he wore 4 golden garments.

What is interesting is that he striped of the golden garments when he entered the Holy of
Holies and he put the golden garments back on when he exit the Holy of Holies. Gold is a
symbol of a deity (godliness) and Yshua stripped Himself of His Godliness when He came
to earth to become a servant, serving humanity unto death. Everything regarding YHVHs
Temple and the Sacrificial System and the Festivals gives us the insight of the spiritual and
what the detail is of YHVHs redemption plan.
In order to enter the Holy of Holies, the high priest was first to bathe his entire body ten times,
going beyond the mere washing of hands and feet as required by other occasions. The
washing symbolized his desire for purification (Numbers 19). The washing was of his clothes
and his flesh (Numbers 8:5-7; 19:7-9). The High Priest, after he mikvahd (washed) himself
will pray this following prayer before he will enter into the Holy of Holies to atone for the sins
of the people:

I beg of You YHVH, I have acted wickedly, rebelled and sinned before you. I and my
household, I beg of you YHVH, forgive now the wickedness, rebellions and sins. For I
have acted wickedly, rebelled and sinned before you, I and my household. As it is written
in Your Torah of Your servant Moses; For on this day He will Atone for you.
The High Priest was the only one involved and doing the Atonement work on this day. He
would have had assistance but the work was solely done by him. Round and about the
Temple there would have been thousands of Israelites, standing and watching and listening
quietly while he was performing the atonement duties. They knew that their atonement was
solely dependant on the High Priest and the work he did on that day. If he messes up, then
the whole of Israel is effected, but if he succeeds, then the whole of Israel is atoned for.
After performing a sacrifice for himself he would sacrifice one of the two goats and take the
blood with him as he enters the Holy of Holies, and with his finger, would sprinkling the blood
upon the Ark of the Covenant (Number 19:1-4; Leviticus 8:13-15). The spiritual
understanding of this is given in Hebrews 9; and 10:19-22.

Two Themes:
o Purging from Sin
through sprinkling
of Blood.
o Cleansing with
sin with pure
Water, which is
the Word.

Yshua is the Sacrifice and the High Priest and He took His own blood and
presented it before the Father for Atonement for our sins. We are cleansed
from a evil conscience with the blood of Yshua and can now enter into the
presence of the Father through Him being the sin offering. We need to wash
ourselves with His Word to be clean before Him. This is also known as
repentance. Atonement is the word kaphar and consists of the letters caf (hand), pey
(mouth) and resh (human reasoning or thoughts). These are the three areas that needs to
be cleansed so that we can stand pure before YHVH; our actions, our words and our minds.
There is no other sin offering other than Yshua and the absence of the Temple confirms that
He is the only standing active Sacrifice and we can only get atonement through the Blood of
Yshua and not animal sacrifices.

The high priest could only go into the Holy of Holies once a year (Leviticus 16:2; Hebrews 9:67). (Elohim issued a warning that no man could see His face and live (Exodus 33:20).

Sin cannot exist before YHVH just like darkness cannot exist in light. YHVHs Holiness will
consume anybody with sin and it is dangerous to approach YHVH, but because on the Day of
Atonement the High Priest could be in Elohim'
s presence. Another term for the Day of
Atonement is "face to face." "Face to face" terminology was used in First Corinthians 13:9-12,
as it is written:

Both verse 11 and the phrase in verse 12, "For now we see through a glass, darkly" come
from the Jewish Midrash. "Face to face" is an idiom for Yom Kippur. One day, after the final
Day of Atonement (day of Judgment) you will meet YHVH face to face and will know Him as
He is and nothing will be hidden any more.
At that moment, the nation had to hold its breath because the nation'
s fate depended upon
Elohim'
s accepting the sacrifice. At that point, the high priest was "face to face with the mercy
seat of Elohim." When the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, he saw YHVHs presence as
a brilliant cloud hovering above the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:2). The word for mercy seat in
Hebrew is kapporet. It comes from the root word kaphar, which is the same word used for
"atonement." The mercy seat can also be translated as the seat of atonement. The mercy
seat is described in detail in Exodus 25:17-22 and 37:6-9. This is the place where Moses met
and spoke with Elohim face to face (Exodus 25:22; 30:6; 7:89). On the mercy seat is the
Blood of Yshua and under the mercy seat is the Commandments of YHVH. You may only
access the Commandments of YHVH if you have accepted the blood of His Atonement. In
other words, you need to be washed and cleansed and forgiven through repentance to be
able to understand and follow His Commandments and way of life. We are cleansed by His
Blood and by His Water (Commandments), and we can enter into His presence, Face to
face, without dying.

Afflict is the word anah and means - abase self,

afflict (-ion, self), answer [by mistake for H6030],
chasten self, deal hardly with, defile, exercise, force,
gentleness, humble (self), hurt, ravish, sing [by
mistake for H6030], speak [by mistake for H6030],
submit self, weaken, X in any wise.
Afflictions is seen as denying yourself any fleshly pleasures and one of
the best ways to do this is through fasting; not eating or drinking for that
day. The Torah says three times, "And this shall be to you a law for all
times: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month you shall
practice self-denial"; tradition interprets self-denial as fasting.

+
+

The Fast:
o Preparation for
yourself
introspection and
repentance.
o Commitment Giving
yourself for Service
unto YHVH.
o Intersession
Praying for people
you know who are
not saved.

For this reason, Yom Kippur is known as "The Fast." When Israel returned back to Jerusalem
in the time of Nehemiah, they fasted and prayed and praised YHVH. This is a very good
example of how it was done and how we should fast on the day of Yom Kippur.

They separated them selves form other people and did three things while they fasted; they
confessed the sins of their fathers, they read form the Torah for a fourth of the day and they
praised YHVH for a fourth of the day. The day of the Fast is not te be spend with other people
and if is not to be used to sit together, keep and eye on the clock and complain of how many
hours you still have to go before eating again.
It is a time you spend on your face before YHVH and pray for
people who are lost as well as your family. It is a time to read
from the Torah and to praise YHVH. A fourth part of a day is
about 2 hours and you should go to your room, spend 2 hours
praying, 2 hours reading from the Word and 2 hours praising
YHVH. The other 2 hours you can rest or listen to music or
teachings. It is a day where you give back to YHVH and where
you are actively praying for other people and praising YHVH.
Every time you are hungry you should pray and let your flesh
and the hunger pains be your reminder to pray and praise YHVH.
You might say it is impossible to pray for 2 hours but if you make a list of all the people you
know and go through it, lifting them up to YHVH, you will easily spend an hour just doing that.
The other way of praying is to thank YHVH for everything you are and have and what He is
going to do. This will keep you busy for a couple of hours if your really go through your life
and thank Him for everything.
To praise YHVH for 2 hours may sound impossible but if you take the Book of Psalms and
read it as if you are saying it, you can easily spend 2 hours just doing that, reading the
Psalms, making them personal and praising YHVH like David did.
Yshua went into the wilderness for forty days, praying and fasting, after He
was anointed by the Holy Spirit and He then started His ministry. This is
prophetic because He took our sin away from us and was cast off into hell
where He took the keys of death so that we might escape the punishment for
sin. You should fast and pray for your sin and use this day to lay everything
before YHVH so that you might be cleansed and prepared to be used by YHVH
and stand in service unto Him. You will also bring unsaved loved ones in
remembrance before YHVH and intercede for them and plead grace over their
lives so that He might open up their eyes and they might repent and come into
His Kingdom.

We see Yom Kippur as one of the Festivals that have not been fulfilled in relation of the
Prophetic Timeline as stipulated by the Seven Festivals. Yet we have seen in the previous
sections that Yshua actually did fulfil Yom Kippur through His death and the atonement He

made for us with His Blood as confirmed in the Book of Hebrews. This is one Festival that has
a double meaning and applies to the First Coming as well as the Second Coming.
The Day of Atonement focuses on the Day of Judgment where Passover focused on the day
of Repentance. This is the time where you will need atonement, at His Second Coming where
He will come to judge all of humanity and will cast those who have sin on their heads, into the
lake of fire just like the scapegoat.

This was a year and day of liberty. Yshua came to preach this
liberty at His first coming (Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:17-21). From
Adam, it has been almost 6,000 years and 120 Jubilees. The
number 120 points to the end of the age of the flesh and the
reign of the life of the spirit (Genesis 6:3). The ultimate fulfilment
of the year of Jubilee will take place at the second coming of
Messiah where we will return to our possession (Garden of Eden
New Jerusalem). The earth will be redeemed and made new
and will come into full and complete rest from the curse brought upon it by Adam'
s sin.
Complete restoration of man'
s lost inheritance will take place. Elohim'
s people will be totally
set free -- set at liberty, from all sin, sickness and disease, death, and the curse and will enter
into His rest. The Tabernacle of Elohim will be with men and He will dwell with them
(Revelation 21:1-4). So, the year of Jubilee and the day of Atonement speak of the
fullness of the redemptive plan of Elohim for man.
The Day of Atonement as the Day of Judgement concerning the second coming of Yshua,
when He will set His foot upon the Mount of Olives and purge the earth from all
unrighteousness.

Those who have not accepted the atoning blood of Yshua will be cut off forever and will not
enter the Kingdom of YHVH. Use this time every year to prepare yourself and to be ready for
that terrible day that is coming. Make yourself available to YHVH so that He may use you to
help others to escape this terrible judgment that is depicted by Yom Kippur.
