I cant remember the
first time I saw or went
across the Mackinac Bridge.
It was probably sometime
in the 1970s.
But, it wasnt until I
became a Michigander in
the mid-1980s that the
bridge and I became good
friends crossing probably
at least twice a year. Maybe
only once on a bad year.
Ive heard that some
people are afraid to drive
or ride across, and truth
be told, there may have
been a time when I was a
bit leery that high above
Lake Michigan. Im sure I
gripped the steering wheel a
little tighter after the Yugo
blew or skidded over the
36-inch railing in 1989.

The skies were cloudy and the temperatures on the cool side but everyone
seemed to enjoy the walk just the same.

The Manistee Civic Players will be
presenting the childrens production of
Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp on
September 16, 17 and 19 at the Ramsdell
Theatre.
The story focuses around the king
being bored and he commands the town
storyteller to mesmerize him with a story.
If she fails in her attempt, she faces ban-
ishment. With this weighty task before
her, Scheherazade transforms each of the
townspeople into actors and recruits them
into acting out the story of Aladdin. His
discovery of the magic lamp leads him into
a wild, funny and exciting coming-of-age
adventure, featuring a gregarious genie, an
evil magician, a villainous father and his
wimpy son, and naturally, a lovely, street-
smart Princess.
Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp has
been adapted from The Arabian Nights by
Jack Leary. He uses clever wordplay, an
ingenious stage sense, and a comic flair to
craft a fast, witty, and contemporary play.

Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp cast announced
What should be the role
of the federal government
in public education?
This is the topic that the
League of Women Voters
(LWV) Manistee County
will be discussing at the
Thursday, Sept.15 program.
This national league study
focuses on the role of the
federal government in our
schools and the matter of
equity for all students in
our public school system.
Some questions that will
be discussed and debated-
--Should we have a nation-
ally mandated curriculum?
Do you think the cur-
rent role of the federal
government in public edu-
cation is much too small
or much too large?
At the grassroots level
the LWV studies issues of
national, state, and local
importance, comes to a
consensus, then takes
a position on the issues
based on that consensus.
Plan to attend this LWV
program to make your
voice heard. This league
program will be held at the
education center., Room. A
of the West Shore Medical
Center at 7 p.m. The public
is invited and encouraged
to attend this program.
Public education has
been getting a lot of atten-
tion recently...both posi-
tive and negative. Public
education has never been
a more important topic. A
strong democracy depends
upon a well educated
public. Public schools are
an American institution
with rich history, amazing
achievements and societal
worth.
The LWV is a nonpar-
tisan political organiza-
tion for women and men,
encourages informed and
active participation in gov-
ernment, works to increase
understanding of public
policy issues and influ-
ences public policy through
citizen education and
advocacy. The League does
not support or oppose can-
didates or political parties
at any level of government,
but always works on vital
issues of concern to mem-
bers and the public. The
League mobilizes citizen
action for a better America.

tion about the Manistee

RECYCLE THIS
NEWSPAPER!
Onekama teen is really cooking
Thirteen-year-old
Emma Putney just com-
pleted an intense, week-
long Culinary Camp in
Rochester led by Wegmans
Food Markets that has 75
supermarkets in five states
and is ranked third on
Fortune Magazines list of
the 100 Best Companies to
Work For.
Now entering eighth
grade at Onekama
Consolidated Schools,
Emma completed the
course with honors. She
also has new friends all
over the country and a
newfound appreciation for
nutrition and the art of pre-
paring great meals.
The 30-hour Culinary
Camp included segments
on food safety and sanita-
tion, slicing and dicing, stir
frying, pan searing, steam-
ing, cooking seafood, pre-
paring appetizers and des-
serts, cheese education and
how to prepare and present
food for large parties. The
program is focused on
building confidence in the
kitchen and encouraging
participants to try new food
products.
I learned new things
every day about how to
handle food, plan a meal
and make food look good
when it is served, Putney
said. We had a gradua-
tion party where each of us
cooked a dish for the rest of
the class. And after gradua-
tion, I put what I learned to
work by preparing a stir fry
for my relatives.
In addition to her culi-
nary education, Putney
said she also learned about
the Wegmans company.
Last year, the company
had sales over $5.6 billion
and has a corporate belief
that good people working
toward a common goal can
accomplish anything they
set out to do.
Putney said that
Wegmans has given over
$81 million in scholar-
ships to more than 25,000
employees since 1984.
While Emmas experi-
ence was not directly tied
to a long-term career inter-
est, jobs in the restaurant
industry are no small pota-
toes, ranking second among
the nations private employ-
ers with 12.8 million jobs,
forecasted by the National
Restaurant Association to
add 1.3 million jobs in the
next 10 years. The countrys
960,000 restaurants pro-
vide jobs for 10 percent of
the U.S. workforce.
As part of the week-long
camp, Putney worked with
a fellow student to make
Peach Soup Shooters and
Peach Chips and Grilled
Chicken Quesadillas that
were prepared to the lik-
ing of her classmates and
class instructors under the
watchful eye of executive
chef Scott Bova.
So mark a 1 in the
win column for Manistee
with the return of Emma
Putney.

Another day that
will live in infamy
It is hard to believe 10 years have
passed since that memorable fall day
that changed the lives of every citizen
in the United States forever.
I remember Sept. 11, 2001 like it
was yesterday as my schedule called
for me to come into work in the
afternoon that day because of a night
meeting that needed to be covered.
When the phone rang at my house
that morning there wasnt any reason
for concern from me. The voice on
the other end was my editor, Dave
Barber, telling me he needed me to
come in because a plane had hit the
World Trade Center.
My televison wasnt on at home,
and at the time I didnt know what
he was talking about. To be quite
honest, I grumbled to myself about
having to come to work. Why was a
plane crashing into a building in New
York that important? Planes periodi-
cally crash and what made this one so
important?
It was mere minutes after get-
ting into work that the significance
hit home. What transpired over the
course of the next 10 hours is some-
thing I will never forget.
The generation before me had
Pearl Harbor as their unforgettable
moment in time, but for me it will
always be Sept. 11, 2001. For my gen-
eration it was the day that will live
in infamy.
Unlike some people, I clearly
recall there wasnt a great deal of
emotion that came later. We didnt
know what we were dealing with
early on, or the extent of it.
I think many people forgot what
transpired in those first few hours.
Many talk about their instant pent
up rage, or being moved to tears.
However, the fact of the matter was
we were watching history be created
right before our eyes.
I remember all of us being
focused on the job at hand which
was searching for local connections
to what was transpiring in New York
and Washington. Our paper made the
decision early on to put out a special
edition, which hadnt been done in
decades.
We had heard on television that
members of Congress were being
moved to safe locations. My editor
suggested I call our representative
Pete Hoekstras office for a comment.
My thoughts were our chances of
contacting anyone were slim to none.
Imagine my surprise when the voice
of Hoekstras press secretary, Jamal
Ware, came on the line.
His surprised tone and words still
ring through my ears.
How did you get through?
said Ware. All the phone lines are
jammed.
The whim proved to be a jour-
nalistic coup for the News Advocate.
Ware described what was transpiring
including how he could see smoke
from his window coming from the
Pentagon.
I remember he finally said, Hey,
I gotta run. We are being evacuated.
Shortly after that time we received
word from local resident Frank
Balcer that his son John had been at
a conference in the second tower, but
had been able to evacuate after the
first plane hit.
It was amazing as in a matter of
hours and being several states away
we were able to get local connections
to events that were breaking as we
talked. The adrenaline was incredible
in our newsroom.
Time flew by and, with one eye
on our computers and another on
the televison, our entire staff worked
like crazy. Although we knew it was
a big story I dont think the real sig-
nificance of it all really hit home until
days and weeks later.
Without a doubt it was and still
is the most exciting day of my jour-
nalistic career. However, in the after-
math of seeing the loss of life I pray
another one never happens. That is
something I hope lasts long beyond
when I...
See you next Wednesday.

Author Series at the Manistee County
Library. Every year in October book
lovers set aside Tuesday evenings for
this series of programs that brings
authors to Manistee. The library
is pleased to announce this years
Authors:
n October 4 at 6:30 p.m. David
Walks-As-Bear: David will be discuss-
ing the latest in his Ely Stone series,
Witiku: the shape shifter. This book
is set in the Manistee area, with one
exciting scene actually happening in
the library. David will speak about
the historical research findings about
the Manistee area, the Legend of the
Dogman and the authors telling of
the tale.
n October 11 at 6:30 p.m. Maris
Soule: Like mysteries with a little
romance? Then this is the program
for you. Maris Soule will discuss As
the Crow Flies, the follow up to her
earlier novel, The Crows. In 2007,
The Crows garnered high praise from
the Library Journal Review Soule,
her skills honed by penning 25
romance novels, writes with authority
and ease, hooking the reader on page
one. Romantic suspense just doesnt
get any better. Mary Higgins Clark
fans will find much to enjoy here.
Reviews for As the Crow Flies are
equally as impressive.
October 18 at 6:30 p.m. Larry

sion for his beloved states heritage.

Michigan history books. Massie is a

history and Michigan heritage, youll
love this program.
n October 25 at 6:30 p.m. Bill
Jamerson: Author, filmmaker and
songwriter Bill Jamerson will pres-
ent the final program of the series.
Bills programs have been described
as a cross between a book talk and
a music concert. He combines story
telling, original songs, and video
clips to create programs that are
as entertaining as they are infor-
mative, as honest as they are fun!
Hell be presenting Up in the U.P.
Michigans Upper Peninsula has been
called the Alaska of the Midwest. It
has a colorful history all its own due
to its unique geography. Bill lived
in the U.P. for ten years collecting
stories from former iron miners, ski
jumpers, trappers and more. He com-
bined these stories and songs into a
program that has a surprise around
every corner!
Everyone is welcome at these free
programs and light refreshments will
be served. Come spend a few eve-
nings with authors and other book
lovers in the community. Call 723-

WALK: From Page 1
These days it doesnt bother me at all
to drive across the mighty Mac. Its always
a pretty sight to me even at night or in
gloomy weather. But on those lucky days
when the sky and the lake waters are deep
blue theres no prettier place on earth.
Prior to this year, my wife Mary, our
daughter Stephanie and I did the Labor
Day Bridge Walk, sponsored by the
Mackinac Bridge Authority, two or three
times. It became more difficult doing it as
Stephanie approached her teen years, and
I remember one reason we decided not to
make it an annual tradition was that the
two or three times we did it, the weather
was perfect. We decided to quit while we
were ahead.
Six months ago Mary and I were able
to get camping reservations at Straits State
Park. Its at the north end of the bridge,
so you can basically get out of bed, throw
on some clothes, and walk about a quarter
mile to the start of the walk.
For this years walk I got myself out of
bed at 6 a.m. to see Governor Snyder send
off the 300 runners who had been selected
to participate in the Governors Council
on Physical Fitness Jog at 6:30 a.m. It
was cool 49 degrees and dark when
Governor Snyder spoke to the walkers.
Its great to be here, what a wonderful
day, Snyder said. Im all fired up, arent
you?
Also on hand to start the event was the
St. Ignace mayor and Lieutenant Governor
Brian Calley.
Todays a wonderful tradition and Im
pleased to be a part of it. Brian and I are
both excited to be here because its Labor
Day, a day to celebrate all the hard work-
ing men and women of Michigan. What a
great talented group.
But its also a day to have fun. This is
one of those great events to have fun and
do physical fitness, and thats the mes-
sage youre going to hear from us later this
month, about how we can all be healthier.
What a better way to start than on a walk
like this, right?
Even though the sun popped out a
couple of times during the morning, the
temperature stayed a constant 49 degrees.
There were babies in strollers and gray-
haired senior citizens whose grandchildren
were wheeling them across one more time
in wheelchairs. When feet and knees and
hips started to ache a bit, seeing one of
the kids or adults on crutches inching
their way along made those tiny pains feel
pretty insignificant.
It is estimated that about 60,000 peo-
ple walk across the bridge each Labor Day
a tradition started by the Michigan gov-
ernor who opened the bridge G. Mennen
Williams.
The Mackinac Bridge opened just in
time for deer hunting season on Nov. 1,
1957. The first bridge walk was held as
part of the dedication ceremony the fol-
lowing June and the walks have been held
on Labor Day since 1959.
The first six walks were from
Mackinaw City to St. Ignace, but since
1965 they have started at the north end of
the bridge.
For the first couple of hours walk-
ers get both lanes on the east side of the
bridge; and after 9:30 southbound traffic
gets two lanes and northbound traffic one
lane. The bridge authority engages dozens
of school buses to carry walkers from the
south end of the bridge to the north.

Mackinac Bridge Facts:
n It cost just under $100 million to
build the bridge. It would cost $400 mil-
lion to replace it. The bonds sold to pay for
bridge construction were paid off in 1986.
n The bridge is just less than five miles
long. The towers soar 552 feet above the
water. The water under the center of the
bridge is about 250 feet deep. The distance
to the water from the roadway at mid-span
is 200 feet.
n Before the bridge was build a fleet
of five car ferries transported 900,000
vehicles across the straits each year.
n Five men died while constructing the
bridge including 26-year-old steelworker
James LeSarge of Manistee.
n There have been only four fatal traf-
fic accidents resulting in five deaths in
the nearly 54 years the bridge has been
opened.
n Painting the bridge is a never-ending
job. It takes nine years and 70,000 gallons
of paint to coat the bridge.
n There are about 65 flat tires on the
bridge each year, and approximately 65
vehicles run out of gas on the bridge.
n The bridge has been closed about 30
times in its history due to zero visibility
with blowing snow. The longest closure
was 8.5 hours.
n In June 1998 the 100 millionth vehi-
cle crossed the bridge. About 4.5 million
vehicles cross each year. Over 500,000
crossed this past July.
n In 1978 a freighter sideswiped the
north tower, causing $40,000 damage to
the bridge and $250,000 damage to the
freighter.
Governor Snyder, with Lieutenant Governor Calley at his left, pose for a photo just before the start of the bridge walk.
Governor Snyder starts a group of runners.
