wireless gets a boost

improving campus internet made priority

LtC re-routes due to heavy traffic

aaron Zaltzman News ediTor Bus routes have been disturbed again by the University of Western Ontario Faculty AssociationLibrarians and Archivists strike, as normal routes were further diverted outside the University. The London Transit Commission originally altered the routes of the buses running through campus to avoid the UWOFA-LA picket lines at the Richmond Street gates and Alumni Hall. Service continued to detour to University Hospital until the weekend, when traffic problems forced the routes to change. Because of the congestion that was being experienced in the area of the hospital and Perth Drive and the access road there, it was basically creating gridlock, John Ford, director of transportation and planning for the LTC, said. It was just too many people, too many vehicles, too many opposing flows, and the capacity of the intersection just wasnt there. Ford added the route diversion was for operational reasons, not out of solidarity with UWOFA-LA. Theres speculation that the reason that we dont cross the picket lines is for sympathy for the union, and thats not in fact the case, Ford said. We do that for operational reasons, in terms of schedule, because theres no reason why we would put our equipment or our passengers in the middle of a dispute.

Kaleigh rogers mulTimedia direcTor The University Community Centre just got an expensive upgrade to its WiFi signal. So did Weldon and Taylor librarieseven though students may not have noticed. The changes are part of a $1.3 million campus-wide upgrade launched a year ago to boost internet and cellular signals over the next few yearsand theyre ahead of schedule. Westerns Information Technology Services estimates the internet upgrades will be complete by January 2013. The budget was re-focused to hit this project first, Debbie Jones, director of ITS, said. We analyzed the wireless traffic on campus and we picked the highest traffic buildings to do first. Were hitting the places where students congregate most because thats where most of the traffic is. She confirmed the UCC has already received the upgrades and all of campus will be upgraded starting with the highest traffic areas and continuing to the lowest over

the next 18 months. Wireless boosters are being installed in ceilings to strengthen the bandwith of the servers in order to make it easier for students to access the server, have faster service and support more students at a time. But the upgrades dont seem to be making much of a difference. I think it got a bit worse, Iris Hui, a second-year social science student, said. It takes forever and then it says I cant log in or theres something wrong with the signal. Hui isnt alone. Alisha Pardhan, a second-year philosophy student, was also frustrated with the connection in the UCC. Every time I would try to sign in it would just not let me sign in, Pardhan explained. It was a pain in the butt. Andrew Forgione, University Students Council president, was disappointed with the upgrades as well. I was told that it was going to be a lot better and its not, Forgione said. He wants to do what he can to change that. Im going to ask the

administration in the next couple of weeks, but as of right now I havent talked to enough students to get feedback. Lobbying for improved access was one of Forgiones platform points in last winters USC elections. But hes realizing now how difficult it is to achieve these goals. One thing Ive realized being USC president is that things take a long time at the University to get done. If I dont get it done this term it will be done the next year. Once you get elected, everything is already budgeted for, so its really difficult to push for new things that cost money, he explained. In lieu of improved cellphone signals, Forgione has fulfilled one platform pointYellow Cab will be installing direct taxi phone lines in the UCC next week. Still, hes waiting to see what can be done to improve the WiFi signals, since the current upgrades have fallen flat. Its a big issueI dont know if any other campuses have this issue, he said.

The centerpiece of the new lab will be a field emission electron microprobe, which is able to analyze rock and mineral samples on a scale of only a few hundred nanometres. It will be the only one of its kind in Canada, one of four in North America and the only one at a research university. Susan Truppe, MP for London North Centre, announced the funding. She emphasized the importance of supporting scientific research. Research projects like those being conducted by these researchers here today are taking place across Canada. This work plays a critical role in mobilizing Canadas science and technology advantage, Truppe said. These projects will help realize the full potential of our natural resources, ensure a cleaner, safer environment and create and help support many new, high-quality jobs. Western will soon be at the forefront of planetary geology research in North America. On September 1, a group of researchers were granted $2.1 million in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to help build the forthcoming Earth and Planetary Material Imaging and Analysis Laboratory. Gordon Osinski, associate professor of planetary geology and one of the researchers developing the laboratory, was excited by the possibilities this laboratory will bring. This is going to be a very unique facility in all of North America, he said.

oUSa encourages student voting through online campaign

With election season upon us, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance and College Student Alliance have launched their online campaign to encourage student voting. The website, itsyourvote.ca, features blogs, platform comparisons and videos encouraging students to hit the polls on October 6, 2011 much like they did in the federal election earlier this year. What we want to provide is a comprehensive guide to help students get informed about each partys plans for higher education, Sean Madden, president of OUSA, said. We want to cut the jargon and let students judge for themselves which partys plans best reflect their priorities. Among the videos released is the sequel to this springs viral video Vote Day by Patrick Searle, vicepresident administration for OUSA and vice-president university affairs at Western. The sequel features Searle and OUSA members spoofing Eminem, Adele and Pitbull with lyrics encouraging voter turnout. The CSA and OUSA represent over 280,000 students combined at 34 student associations across Ontario. Were hopeful that political parties will continue the discussion of post-secondary education throughout the campaign and take advantage of engaging with this untapped population, Brian Constantini, president of the CSA, said. Bus crash injures six

A traffic accident involving a London Transit Commission bus and a car left three passengers and two motorists hospitalized on Friday, September 9. The collision occurred at the intersection of Wellington and Commissioners roads, during rush hour traffic just after 5 p.m. Dennis Rivest, media relations officer for the London Police, noted the bus was initially heading northbound. After avoiding a southbound vehicle, it veered towards a nearby fence, landing on the lawn of the London Health Science Centre. A total of six people, including the bus driver, sustained non-life threatening injuries. All remaining passengers were safely evacuated.

Kings gets a new castle for its subjects

New student life centre will act as a social learning space
Cheryl Stone News FeaTures ediTor Students at Kings University College will have a lounge space of their own come 2013. The Darryl J. King Student Life Centre will feature casual spaces for students to lounge in, a new home for the Kings University College Students Council and a permanent home for the Kings Players. David Sylvester, principal of KUC, explained approximately 80 per cent of the projects $11 million price tag was funded by donations. The new centre will be connected to the Cardinal Carter Library to create a learning commons. Sylvester noted the newly created space would be a social learning space, where students can do group work with easy access to campus resources. Barshan Quadry, president of KUCSC, explained the building would solve one of the biggest problems facing Kings students. Theres a lack of meeting space on campus, he explained. He noted students met in odd places around campus, adding the KUCSC would gain a prominent spot in the new building. This made a significant difference [to students]knowing that two years from now they will have this space, Quadry explained. The KUCSC donated $2.4 million to the space. The project has been informally in the works for six years, with pressure from the Students Council only occurring in the past two years. Originally, the new building was to fill the parking space next to Wemple Hall. Sylvester noted when they took a closer look at the long term plans for the University, they

were hoping to include an extension to the library space. But the decision was finally made when it was agreed that the new building would create the courtyard at the center of campus. The name of the space comes from Darryl J. King, an alumni of

the University. He made the largest donation in Kings history towards the building. Anybody who works in University development [] is very humbled when someone makes a donation like that, Sylvester explained. He noted it was common

for Kings alumni to donate back to the school. Other parts of the building will also be named after donors. Kings is inviting other donors to get in on the action, including having their names placed on seats in the newly-built theatre.

Sylvester said the ground breaking ceremony would take place in the spring. The building will be certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system, making it the greenest on campus.

Post-doctoral associates bargain for higher pay

alex Carmona News ediTor The Librarians and Archivists arent the only bargaining unit embroiled in a labour dispute with Western. The 35 post-doctoral associates at the University, all of whom have their PhDs and mainly focus on assisting professors with research, will soon return to the bargaining table to attempt to hammer out a collective agreement acceptable to both parties. This will be the newest round of negotiations in a two-year struggle between the two groups. The post-doctoral associates, represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada, have issued a statement saying that the University refuses to pay them anything more than poverty wages. In the last round of negotiations, the university proposed a salary that was at minimum $13.82 per hour. Members feel that after spending such a long time at the university level and spending so much time as a student, you would want something that is a little more respectable, Ruchi Bhalla, a member of the post-doctoral associate negotiating team, said. According to Ariel Troster, communications officer for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the Universitys latest salary offer to post-doctoral associates does not adequately account for the financial and academic realities that face the associates. The University wants to guarantee very little money to people who quite often have come right out of their PhD, have a ton of debt, are trying to break into the work force, are still stuck with these really low wages and are often doing high profile research with professors, Troster explained. Helen Connell, associate vicepresident communications and chief marketing officer at Western, said that increasing the minimum wage for these associates is not a simple issue. The salaries of post-doctoral associates are funded through research grants held by individual faculty members, Connell noted. The goal throughout the negotiations for Western has been balancing the needs of the associates and the availability and limitations of research funding. Both parties were in agreement that it is currently too early to consider a strike possibility. There isnt even a strike deadline. However, were we to strike, some Western students would definitely be negatively affected, Bhalla added. As a researcher, there is a certain component of undergraduate supervision, especially in the lab environment. The Public Service Alliance of Canada is also contending that Westerns latest wage offer is more than $15 an hour less than what the University pays its graduate student teaching assistants. Connell said that since postdoctorate associates are funded by research grants held by individual faculty members, the union was erroneous in comparing the two. The TAs do not function on a wage-floor system like the postdoctorate associates, so its really apples and oranges, she countered. However, it isnt unusual in labour negotiations for unions to make a number of these kinds of statements. They can make all kinds of claims if they wish, but were going to bargain at the table. Talks will resume between the two parties on October 3.

USC offers something for everyone

The beginning of the school year is a wonderful time. Readings havent started to pile up, your November due dates seem light years away and campus is buzzing with welcome back events. The majority of these events are sponsored by our very own University Students Council, as its their mandate to help make our student experience the best it can be. Bringing in popular bands, celebrities and providing beer tents seems to be the best way to lure students to these events. Recently the USC brought in well-known artists like Lights, Said the Whale, The Sheepdogs and Entourage star Adrian Grenier. But what about when the lines are blurred as to how much the USC is actually sponsoring an event? Recently the popular European DJ Avicii played a concert in downtown London that was advertised as a USC sponsored event. The event took place far away from campus and with other organizations also sponsoring the event, the concert lacked a strong Western vibe. These events would happen in London regardlessis it really necessary for the USC to tack on their name just to seem hip and cool to upper-year students? That brings into question whether or not upperyear students even care about USC sponsored events. Purple Fest, which is happening now, is designed to be a sort of welcome back week for upper-year students who miss out on the O-Week events. But are upper-year students even interested in these types of events, or have they already grown fond of Richmond Row and no longer care for Western-sanctioned concerts? We have to give the USC credit for trying and its pretty nice to at least know they are working to bring in events that students of all ages can enjoy. For students not in the know, promoting these events as being USC-affiliated is a great way for the council to get their name known to students. When it comes down to it, even if we might not want to go out to Talbot Bowl for the Purple Fest concert, and even if you werent aware that Avicii was associated with the USC, their efforts are in the students best interest. Its great that the USC wants Western students to have a good time. Assuming the students council isnt crumbling away at its foundation, these USCsponsored events arent going to hurt.

Support our Stangs, try school spirit

wrath of mcGrath
Kaitlyn mcGrath opiNioNs ediTor As the cheers from O-Week fade, a more familiar Western starts to appeara Western that lacks school spirit. I had a dilemma on Saturday afternoon. I wanted to go work out at Campus Recreation, but I also wanted to watch the Western Mustangs take on the McMaster Marauders in what was expected to be a one of the more exciting football games of the season. Realizing that theres an abundance of televisions at the gym, I decided to head there, assuming that I could plant myself on a treadmill, complete my 40-minute workout, all while watching the game that would surely be shown. You can imagine my disappointment when I discovered not one single television in all of Campus Recreation was tuned into the national sports station The Score, which as part of its University Rush program was covering the Western at McMaster match. Youd think as Westerns own fitness facility they would feel its important to support Westerns football team by showing the game that was broadcast on a national sports station and that featured the second and third ranked football teams in the country. Its also currently the only regular season Western game that will be featured on The Score. But there must have been more important things on, right? Let me give you some examples of what was playing while the Mustangs were defeating the Marauders a repeat episode of Friends, a rugby game featuring England and Argentina, an episode of Desperate Housewives, Fashion television and MTVs Jersey Shore. Oh, and it wasnt anything against football since one TV was tuned into Oregon State versus Wisconsin. Glad to know we support the NCAA here at Western. It was actually ironic that in a building filled with students wearing Western Football tees, Western football was nowhere to be seen. I left earlier than planned as both an act of protest against the total lack of support, and because I was tired of having to follow the game from Twitter updates. But this is just one aspect of a much larger picture. Western is constantly being touted as the best student experience, but are we really as dedicated to the school as we claim? Or are we only dedicated enough to go to the first half of a football game because wed rather go drink somewhere else? This apathetic attitude stretches beyond the football field. Every year the majority of students feel indifferent about University Students Council elections, proven by the underwhelming voter turnout each year. If students were passionate about Western, shouldnt they care whos in charge of the student experience? Western has a long tradition of spirit, but the majority of students lean solely on our past instead of continuing the tradition into the future. Were so caught up in thinking were so full of spirit that we actually fail to prove it most of the timewe just slap on the purple face paint, go to a keg party off campus and assume that makes us the most spirited school around. Every student is proud to don the purple and white, but it seems like its just a formality. Wearing a purple shirt doesnt mean you have school spirit it just means youre wearing a purple shirt.

true love knows no bounds

Re: Floorcest (Tuesday, September 6) To the Editor: I just finished reading the Frosh Student Guide issues article regarding floorcest and its implications to other floormates. I would like to provide a more positive perspective to the new frosh regarding this topic. I engaged in floorcest fairly early in my first year four years ago. I ignored the reasons why not to do it and listened to the major reason why. I sparked with this person, and although my floor did not agree with our relationship at first, they definitely understand now. My floorcest love will be my husband in August 2012. We found each other on our floor and fell in love. Although floorcest does have its risks, it should not stop the ultimate goal of relationshipsfinding your one true love. I am not advocating for all frosh to engage in floorcest in order to find their future wife or husband. I am merely suggesting that true love does not care where you are living or what you are doing. Do not ignore your true feelings, and do not be scared to start a relationship just because you live on the same floor. Understand the risks, and weigh the pros and cons. I understood the risks, did not ignore my feelings and will soon be happily wed to my floormate. Michelle ferreira

Arts&Life
amber Garratt maNaGiNG ediTor Entourage may have come to an end this past Sunday, but thats not the last were going to hear of Adrian Grenier. The University Students Council brought Grenier, more famously known as Vincent Chase from Entourage, to Western Film Friday to screen and discuss his documentary Teenage Paparazzo. The documentary showcases the relationship between Austin Visschedyk, a 14-year-old paparazzo, and Grenier. After being photographed by Visschedyk, Grenier decided to turn the cameras on the paparazzi and explore their world through the experiences of this 14-year-old. Its crazy to see this young baby-faced boy vying for these shots amongst these big, burly guys. What you come to realize is that the world is not what it seems and that the lines are blurred, Grenier says. The documentary investigates the world of the paparazzo and the consequences and perks of media exposure through interviews with psychologists, historians, tabloid writers and notable celebrities including Paris Hilton, Eva Longoria and Alec Baldwin. This film was about making this one-way exploitation into a two-way conversation and that is what is so important, because

we all have the tools to communicate through media, Grenier says. This was probably the most educational experience of my entire life. It changed the way I see the world entirely. Grenier set out to investigate the life of Visschedyk, but ultimately began to investigate peoples obsession with celebrities and the social cultural phenomena that is attached to it. What I learned from this whole process was the idea that people are now empowered by new technology and social media to contribute to the mediated landscape, to share their point of view and go from a passive state to an active state. I think it is a really exceptional time we live in, Evan Ferrante, Teenage Paparazzos co-producer and

Greniers cousin, says. The screening and question and answer period held at Western was part of Greniers Teenage Paparazzo Experience Tour. This is a non-traditional theatrical tour as a way to recoup some of our money, Grenier explains. Documentaries dont make a ton of money, unless they are blockbusters, but for the most part we are struggling. Teenage Paparazzo showcased Grenier on and off the camera as he appeared in the documentary and as one of the producers. Grenier is noted for his acting ability, but producing and directing is something hes passionate about. I have decided to make documentaries, because as an actor I feel very vulnerable disempowered almost because its hard to know if you are doing it right. But when you actually take the time and shape the story, do the research and the work, there is something comforting in that discovery, he says. I feel comfortable in that, having this film to share. I am rather uncomfortable with acting. Grenier fans shouldnt fret, as his life in front of the screen will not be coming to an end anytime soon. When asked if he is going to concentrate on filmmaking he insisted, [producing] doesnt pay as well as acting. But Ill do both. I think its good to be uncomfortable.

Lauren Chan arTs & liFe ediTor Performance Openers Crowed Setlist Worth the cash After high-energy opening sets from Western graduate Giddy and DJ duo Cazzette, hoards of Western students eagerly awaited the first baseline from the nights main act, Avicii. With the lights out and the crowd chanting his name, Avicii opened his Frosh Week 2011 Block Party with an edit of his hit Fade Into Darkness. Throughout the night Avicii had the 4,000 person audience dancing to his own tracks like Levels and Penguin in addition to mashing up some international hits like Swedish House Mafias Save the World and Adeles Rolling in the Deep. The concert was put on by Premier Productions Inc. and sponsored by the University Students Council, making it the first of its kind in collaboration. Taking place off-campus didnt mean that the USC wasnt directly involved in fact, USC president Andrew Forgione was very hands-on in the concerts planning and promotion. Avicii is a young, vibrant DJ, and his music is upbeat and bright. He has a large following within the Western community, and this was a great opportunity to bring his music to the students, Forgione said. Im a strong believer that events bring people together, provide great exposure for student councils and allow students to relax and have a healthy work-life balance. Everyone in attendance appeared to love Aviciis concert. Judging by the huge smile on his face all night, the love was reciprocated. The USC might have similar events up their sleeve for the fall term. As of right now we do not have a large concert planned for the second term, but we are working with all the faculty councils and affiliated college councils to get a Western concert organized, Forgione said. This would be great for building a sense of community within campus and hopefully start a new tradition. Students can look forward to more programming in The Wave and Spoke, such as The Arkells who will be coming in October, and events in the new Student Lounge.

Lights glows over her upcoming album

Jesica Hurst arTs & liFe ediTor With her second album Siberia dropping on October 4 and an American tour on the way, you can hardly tell that Juno Award-winning artist Lights is nervous at all. Calm and composed after her sound check for the O-Week concert, Lights sat down on Saturday to talk about Siberia, her newfound edgier sound and how she copes with change. Are you feeling excited or nervous for the release of Siberia? Im so excited! Because its so different and Im already somewhat established to a certain degree, its a whole new animal this time around. It was a bit of a struggle to get to this pointwe ran into some political stuff and will be releasing the album independently outside of Canada. It was like a battle, but nothing good comes without a fight. Youve released two singles off your new record that have a much different sound from those off of The Listening. Do you wonder how fans will react to changes? Yeah for sureits always on my mind. I remember when we put out the first taste of the new record, I was sitting there before it happened and I was so nervous. But one of the things you have to remember is that you cant make what the fans are necessarily looking for. It was a struggle for me to want to move beyond trying to please everybody, but youre going to get some division regardless of what you put out. What can your fans expect from Siberia? Will there be more collaboration? Most of the collaboration is what I already put out there. Holy Fuck put their imprint on 90 per cent of the recordwe wrote some stuff with them and they put their sound on stuff we already recorded. This is really the first time I have brought other independent talents into my creative world, so its been a really exciting experience. Whats your writing process like? It does change all the timeit depends on the nature of the song though. The song Cactus in the Valley, which made the record, was written with me on my guitar. But for Everybody Breaks A Glass, I sat down with the guys from Holy Fuck and we built all the music and then I went home and created melodies and lyrics. Its cool to change it up. You just spoke about change when you come to a changing moment in your personal or professional life, how do you deal with it? One of the things you have to be ready for in the industry is the upand-go sort of thing. I was raised a missionary kid so Im usually able to not feel tied down anywhere. When plans do change I get frustrated, but nothing is too constant which is goodit keeps me on my toes. Whats your advice for the students starting at Western this year? One of the greatest things Ive learned is how to put yourself in other peoples shoes. If youve created something you love, its good to look at it from a non-biased point of view and judge yourself based on that. In terms of empathy, seeing angles and relationships from other peoples perspective is so important.

Steven Soderberghs Contagion explores the infectious plot of a deadly virus. The film opens to the sound of a cough with several exchanges of drinks, money and handshakes. Contagion quickly builds tension while showing how fast disease can spread amongst a community. Unlike others in the disaster genre, Contagions plot is a realistic one, backed with a smart script and powerful on-screen talent. It does stay true to its genre with its fairly blatant political messages. After a trip to Hong Kong, Beth Emhoff (Gwyenth Paltrow) becomes the carrier of a virus. Krumwiede (Jude Law), a blogger and conspiracy theorist who looks to expose the governments agenda with drug companies, unfortunately falls short, as he becomes an unlikable propaganda figure who really doesnt care about much more than himself. Another plot line follows the team of doctors played by Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Ehle. Together they aim to slow the epidemic and find a cure. Even with scientific talk shooting left and right, the script is easy to follow and provides enough information to not be confusing. Contagion has a clear political agenda. The initial start of the outbreak is caused by Beths trip to China, reminding that air-travel can allow diseases to reach new continents within hours. The films comments on the current relationship between the U.S. and China are focused on responsibility. Together they are responsible for the outbreakChina for its unclean environments, and the U.S. for its ignorance. Contagion is a well-executed film. At the very least, this film may convince viewers to wash their hands more frequently.

mens soccer underway

road to nationals is looking good
Jason Sinukoff sporTs ediTor With 37 points and a record of 111-4 in 16 games played last season, one cant ask much more of the Mustangs mens soccer team going into this year. Its been a hard off-season for the Mustangs as virtually their entire midfield, with the exception of Camilo Gonzalez, graduated. However, the biggest hit to the team is the loss of Niko Mavrikos, the top goal-scorer and co-captain for the squad in the 2010-11 season. With the loss of Mavrikos, the Mustangs will be looking to the other co-captain of the 2010-11 season and OUA veteran Paul Damario along with star goalie and new second captain Andrew Murdoch to lead the charge for Western this year. Niko was our top goal-scorer. We have Paul Damario back as our fourth-year captain, he was our captain last year as well with Niko. So certainly Paul is back as captain, Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco said. Weve named Andrew Murdoch who has come back for his fifth year [and is] our goalkeeper who had about 12 shutouts last year as our second captain, so certainly we are looking at him to give us experience and veteran savvy, he continued. The Mustangs have also found an outstanding replacement for Mavrikos in freshman Haris Cekic. Cekic has been blowing away the

competition as of late, scoring five of the six Mustang goals in the past four games. Haris is a phenomenal player. Were really happy to have him at Western. Were looking at him to be our general on attack. Hes very skilful, as he showed, Basacco noted. With so much expected of him, Cekic doesnt look to be cracking under the pressure. The pressure actually isnt too bad. I feel fine with it, Cekic explained. With Cekic scoring goals left and right, the Mustangs boast an undefeated streak with a record of 3-0-1. Along with the batch of new players, Basacco has implemented a new system of play to try and ease the new players into the Ontario University Athletics. The old system saw the Mustangs play in a 4-4-2 formation with two strikers,

four midfielders and four defenders. Now Western is playing a 4-5-1 system. Were hoping that having the five players in the middle in the 4-51 will give us a little bit more stability defensively until they get comfortable with each other, Basacco said. Because a lot of them are playing with each other for the first time, it may take a little bit from our attack, but we are trying to get as many people forward when we get possession. I think once the familiarity is there, I think we are going to do very well. Along with easing in the freshmen, the new system also helps the coaching staff see who plays best at each position. We were trying a new system out so it gave us an opportunity to try different players on different positions, Basacco explained. Cekic is no stranger to the 4-5-1 system, having previously played it on his club team prior to Western. With his new team playing so well together, Cekic has one simple expectation for the season. To make nationals is the main expectation, he said. This goal is echoed by coach Basacco as well. Well I mean, your goals are always to get to nationals. The program has good success getting to nationals, including last year, Basacco explained. It seems like Basacco has all the pieces of a winning team in place. If the rest of the season goes as well as the first four games, Basaccos expectations might become a reality.

Seven strong innings from Paish fuels win

mustangs squeak out 5-4 victory over Gryphons
Greg Colgan coNTribuTor When the game is on the line, you want your best pitcher on the mound. The Western Mustangs had just that as they sent last seasons Ontario University Athletics pitcher of the year, Adam Paish, to the mound. Paish stopped a seventh inning Guelph Gryphons rally to win their home opener 5-4 at Labatt Park Wednesday night. Ive always been the kind of pitcher that likes to finish what he starts and it kills me to get pulled out of the game, Paish said. I like to battle and I was getting a little tired, but the team picked me up and we finished out the inning. With runners on second and third with two outs, Paish struck out Guelph catcher Anthony Interisano swinging for his sixth and final strikeout in seven innings of work to get the win. Ive seen him in that position before and I knew he would get tougher and shut the door, Mustangs head coach Mike Lumley said. Hes got a feel for the plate, the zone and the batter. Up to that point, the game went back and forth with neither team outshining the other. That changed after Paish closed out the top of the seventh and Westerns bats woke up in the bottom of the inning, led by their veterans. You always rely on the senior guys since theyve got championships under their belts, Lumley said. Its always important for the young guys to watch and learn from their experience and maturity.

They had little mistakes, but theyve done a great job. weve already started to see them grow and by midseason, theyll be at the top of their game.

They came through when we needed them. Centre fielder Dustin Saracini led off by getting on base before advancing to second and third on a groundout and single respectively. Ian Campbell eventually drove Saracini home on a single. Campbells hit would chase Guelph starting pitcher Brook Coatsworth from the game. Western would tack on another run when Kevin Annett came in on J.D. Hartnagles groundout giving Western a 5-3 lead. How it went down We knew it was going to be a wellpitched game and it would come down to who executed the best, Guelph head coach Matt Griffin said. Western came up with hits when they needed them. Guelph started the scoring in the second inning, but Western tied it up in the third on a bloop single by Campbell, his first of two RBIs.

I GUESS tHoSE GoLF LESSoNS rEaLLy PaId oFF. Led by their veteran hitters and a strong performance on the mound by their ace adam paish, the mustangs squeaked out a 5-4 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in their home opener.

In the fifth inning, mental mistakes by Western and good base running by Guelph allowed the Gryphons to take a 21 lead. After executing a double steal that scored a run, Mustangs catcher Matthew Antenello began arguing over the call at home while Guelph left fielder Peter Riccardi took advantage of Riccardis frustration by advancing to third. Although Guelph wasnt able to score, at the end of the half inning Lumley called his fielders in to remind them to stay focused. They get in this habit of playing summer ball where they lose focus

a bit, said Lumley. In this league its an 18 game season and every game matterstodays game could mean the difference between first and fifth place. We were a better team than Guelph today, but I didnt want that to slip away at all, Lumley said. Its a younger team this year and theyve got to learn from mistakes and they will. It was a lesson quickly learned as Westerns newfound focus propelled them to two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 3-2. Paul Lytwynec moved from third base to the mound as he pitched

the ninth. Guelph made things interesting, scoring another run to get within one before the final out. Although Lumley knows his team made some mistakes, he said they improved when they needed to and theyll only get better as the year goes on. They had little mistakes, but theyve done a great job. Weve already started to see them grow and by mid-season, theyll be at the top of their game, he said. The Mustangs next home game is September 18 at Labatt Park when they take on Queens Gaels in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

mixed results as western clashes with Laurier

women falter as men persevere versus Golden Hawks
daniel Bottner coNTribuTor After a shaky start, the Western mens soccer team pulled off a second half comeback to beat the Laurier Golden Hawks last Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs spent most of the first half weathering a flurry of scoring opportunities that the Golden Hawks created, including an awkward lob from well outside the box that hit the crossbar. Westerns luck ran out at the 24 minute mark as Golden Hawks striker Spencer Cawker weaved through two Western defenders en route to a breakaway and an easy finish. It was a tentative first half. Im not completely happy with how we played, Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco said. The Mustangs found a fresh start in the second half as they created some scoring chances of their own. In the 60th minute, fifth-year defenseman Evan Kadet scored the equalizer when he gained possession in the box after a lengthy scramble. Although Kadet had an awkward shooting angle, he placed the ball perfectly in the top corner to best the Golden Hawks net-minder. Basacco was quick to mention the significance of this goal. That was Evan Kadets first goal James Bordeau coNTribuTor The Mustangs womens soccer team fell to a 1-2-0 record last Saturday in early regular season play, losing 2-0 to the Laurier Golden Hawks. In a game with few scoring opportunities for either team, the Golden Hawks capitalized on their opportunities while the Mustangs faltered. In todays game I thought we didnt create a great deal of scoring opportunities, Mustangs coach Dave Peak said. In respect to Laurier, a couple of the chances that they did create, they stuck away and they stuck away well. Laurier maintained ball possession for most of the first half leading to multiple scoring chances. I think we were quicker to the ball in the first half, Golden Hawks head coach Barry Maclean said. The Golden Hawks opened the scoring as Julia Marchese put the ball past sprawling Mustangs goalie Jodie Scoular. The Golden Hawks scoring chances continued as the Mustangs neutral zone turnovers seemed to be their undoing. Lauriers Krista Celluci added another tally as she took advantage of Westerns miscues and set herself up for a quick one-on-one opportunity that she buried with a skilful kick of the ball into the top left corner of the net. MacLean was pleased with his teams overall play on both sides of the ball. The two goals that we scored were good opportunistic finishes, MacLean said, I thought our defence was superb [] we were winning most of the first challenges and we didnt give too many opportunities to Western. Unfortunately, the injury bug has already hit the Mustangs early in the season. We already have potentially four starters out, but we cant use that as an excuse, Peak said. The Mustangs look to get back in the win column this Sunday as they take on the Waterloo Warriors.

Corey Stanford GaZeTTe

in five years playing at Western, Bassaco said about the left back. Thats a huge goal for him. Just seven minutes later, Western midfielder Haris Cekic rifled home a free kick from about 35 yards out to score the go-ahead goal. This marks Cekics third goal in as many games. Its just a matter of increasing the overall performance for a full 90 minutes [...] We just cant get complacent and sit back because players such as Haris will take it to you if you give them too many opportunities, Laurier assistant coach Jarret Humphreys said. For the rest of the match, the Mustangs formed a defensive shell around goalkeeper Andrew

Murdoch. The change in strategy clearly stifled the Golden Hawks offense as they were unable to create any more scoring chances. Humphreys was quick to pay tribute to Westerns second half play. Weve got a fairly young team so were going to have our ups and downs. Unfortunately we did come close but didnt get the breaks today, Humphreys said. All the credit to Western they took advantage of their chances and we didnt. Murdoch finished the game with three saves while Laurier goalkeeper Brett Harrington chalked up three as well. With that win, the Mustangs continue their undefeated streak as they improve to a 2-0-1 record.
