Club Features
The Club
The 13th oldest golf club in the world, North Berwick is second only to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews for
continuous play over the same course. The West Links was originally 6 holes, with a 7th added before it was extended to 18 holes in
1877. One of the most natural links in the world, North Berwick may not be the longest of courses at 6,420 yards but rest assured
that successful navigation requires the full repertoire of shot making.
Like all golf courses of similar historical origins, North Berwick has its own stories to tell - some good, some funny and some tragic.
In the early days, matches between leading professionals were frequent and attracted thousands of spectators. In September 1875,
one such match pitted Willie and Mungo Park against Young and Old Tom Morris . The match ended abruptly when a telegram arrived
with the news that Young Tom's wife was seriously ill after the birth of their son. Tragically, both Mother & Son subsequently died and
so devastating was the news to the 25-year old "legend", that Young Tom, already triple Open Champion, died 3 months later.
The course itself has been described as being from a primitive age, a statement that must not be perceived as taking anything away
from its undeniable quality. The simple fact is that North Berwick has to a large extent evolved naturally with little assistance from
mankind, a fact reflected in the name of the principle course architect - Mother Nature herself. Each hole on this stimulating links,
which regularly hosts final qualifying for the British Open , poses different tests of judgement and skill. A unique golfing experience,
North Berwick boasts blind holes, spectacular views, drives over walls and burns and bunkers deep enough for golfers to disappear
from view. Many holes have been copied by designers all over the world; most commonly the 376-yard, 14th, named "Perfection"
and the 192-yard 15th hole called "Redan", which has been replicated in both Pebble Beach and Shinnecock Hills.
Like many of the great holes in golf, first impressions of "Redan" can be deceptive and it is only through playing the hole a number,
that the golfer can truly appreciate its hidden subtleties. The mounds, ridges and depressions that were left after the sea receded give
the course its natural contours and the 15th hole was part of that evolution. For the player on the tee, the green is blind and the
shaped shot, which is demanded to battle with the prevailing wind, can be struck with anything from a driver to a nine iron.

1 - Hole 1
Championship - 323 Medal - 323 Regular - 308 C'ship Ladies - 303 Ladies & Juniors - 303
Pro's Tip: Play your drive short of the path and aim your approach shot left of the pin. Important to get your approach shot close on this
the largest of our greens
2 - Hole 2
Championship - 432 Medal - 432 Regular - 418 C'ship Ladies - 405 Ladies & Juniors - 405
Pro's Tip: This hole runs along the sea. Cut off as much as you dare. The second is much longer than it looks, over a bunker guarding
the centre of the green.
3 - Hole 3
Championship - 460 Medal - 444 Regular - 444 C'ship Ladies - 430 Ladies & Juniors - 430
Pro's Tip: Drive at the gap in the wall. Your second shot must be played over the wall but avoid the greenside bunker on the right.
4 - Hole 4
Championship - 178 Medal - 178 Regular - 168 C'ship Ladies - 163 Ladies & Juniors - 163
Pro's Tip: Miss the green at your peril bunkers await right and left. Note that the green is two-tier.
5 - Hole 5
Championship - 370 Medal - 370 Regular - 358 C'ship Ladies - 314 Ladies & Juniors - 314
Pro's Tip: Bunkers to the right await the faded drive. Straightforward approach shot playing a few yards longer than it looks.
6 - Hole 6
Championship - 160 Medal - 160 Regular - 139 C'ship Ladies - 124 Ladies & Juniors - 124
Pro's Tip: The shortest of the par threes at North Berwick. Avoid the cavernous bunker guarding the approach to this green. The folly of
under-clubbing is plain to see.
7 - Hole 7
Championship - 354 Medal - 354 Regular - 334 C'ship Ladies - 326 Ladies & Juniors - 326
Pro's Tip: A straight drive from the tee is required. Club up on the second to avoid wet feet. Reward for an approach shot close to the
pin.
8 - Hole 8
Championship - 506 Medal - 506 Regular - 487 C'ship Ladies - 424 Ladies & Juniors - 424
Pro's Tip: Avoid bunker on the left off the tee. Plot your way carefully past cross bunkers whether carrying or laying up.
9 - Hole 9
Championship - 520 Medal - 502 Regular - 502 C'ship Ladies - 423 Ladies & Juniors - 423
Pro's Tip: The right hand route is the safest but this makes for a longer hole. The left hand route is only for the brave and accurate.
Negotiate the greenside bunkers for a chance of a birdie.
10 - Hole 10
Championship - 171 Medal - 171 Regular - 152 C'ship Ladies - 144 Ladies & Juniors - 144
Pro's Tip: Do not be distracted by the view. You must not pull up short five bunkers await a wayward tee shot.
11 - Hole 11
Championship - 548 Medal - 548 Regular - 524 C'ship Ladies - 459 Ladies & Juniors - 459
Pro's Tip: Drive left of the bunkers. Your second shot must lay up short of the bunkers or carry the diagonal slope. The approach shot
must be played left of the pin or the bunker right awaits.
12 - Hole 12
Championship - 397 Medal - 397 Regular - 362 C'ship Ladies - 348 Ladies & Juniors - 348
Pro's Tip: Play it as a dog-leg. Concentrate hard while putting on this tricky green, as the wind plays a big part with the green so close
to the shore.
13 - Hole 13
Championship - 388 Medal - 388 Regular - 362 C'ship Ladies - 334 Ladies & Juniors - 334
Pro's Tip: Drive to the right of centre. Don't argue with the wall it's older than you. A good drive however will leave you with a short
iron over the wall to set up a birdie chance.
14 - Hole 14
Championship - 376 Medal - 376 Regular - 359 C'ship Ladies - 345 Ladies & Juniors - 345
Pro's Tip: An accurate tee-shot is essential. Your second shot must carry the ridge. Only a perfect shot will yield a reward.
15 - Hole 15
Championship - 190 Medal - 190 Regular - 179 C'ship Ladies - 172 Ladies & Juniors - 172
Pro's Tip: The green slopes strongly from right to left. Your tee shot must carry all the way on this the most famous of the short holes
and copied throughout the world.
16 - Hole 16
Championship - 379 Medal - 379 Regular - 349 C'ship Ladies - 372 Ladies & Juniors - 372
Pro's Tip: You may carry the burn but the real trouble is the green narrow, raised and dissected by a gully. This hole needs accuracy
or luck.
17 - Hole 17
Championship - 428 Medal - 428 Regular - 385 C'ship Ladies - 417 Ladies & Juniors - 417
Pro's Tip: Aim at Bass Rock, left can be the shortest line. Your second shot must carry the ridge, before hitting the brakes to avoid a
second visit to the first green.
18 - Hole 18
Championship - 278 Medal - 278 Regular - 271 C'ship Ladies - 246 Ladies & Juniors - 246
Pro's Tip: Concentrate car repairs are expensive. Play left if you feel the need for safety. A good time to finish with a birdie in front of
the clubhouse.
