Switching Lab
Instructions: Executives under training will be imparted lab session in the switching technology available in the respective training center. This handout briefs on the switching labs at ALTTC. EWSD LAB Description: A model EWSD exchange training lab is working in ALTTC which is being utilized to impart training in Installation, Operation and Maintenance of EWSD switching system. Learning Objectives:The trainee will be shown various building blocks of EWSD switching System during the lab visit. They will be told about working of each module in brief. Trainees will also be exposed to general operation and maintenance philosophy of a EWSD exchange. During lab visit, the trainees will be exposed to followings : Architecture of the EWSD system. Name and functions of various modules of EWSD System. Layout of EWSD training exchange. Terminals working in EWSD Lab. Operational activities in EWSD exchange. Subscriber Administration Routing Charging. Zoning. Traffic Administration. Network management. APS saving Maintenance schedule for EWSD exchange. Registers to be maintained in exchange.

Digital Line Unit (DLU) :Analog or Digital subscribers, PBX lines are terminated on DLU. DLUs can be used locally within the exchange or remotely as remote switch unit. Line/ Trunk Group (LTG) :The line/trunk groups (LTG) is the sub system in EWSD exchange which forms the interface between the digital environment of an EWSD exchange and the switching network(SN).Here line as ISDN PRI,V5.2 and trunks are connected. Switching Network (SN) :Switching network performs the switching function for speech as well as for messages in EWSD exchange. Co-ordination Processor (CP) :The coordination processors (CP) does the main call processing and other functions like routing, Zoning, safeguarding etc. Message Buffer (MB):Message Buffer is the module for coordinating internal message traffic between the CP, the SN, the LTGs and the CCNC in an exchange. Common Channel Signaling Network Control(CCNC):The MTP function of CCS#7 are handled by the common channel signaling network control(CCNC).The UP is incorporated in the software of relevant LTG. System panel Display (SYPD):It is to display system internal alarms and the CP load. The SYPD also displays external alarms such as fire and air- conditioning system failure. Central Clock Generator (CCG): It is for the synchronization of the exchange & for the network.

Types of Switching Modules: In 5ESS Switch Trainees will see and identify the following types of SMs. LSM (Local Switching Module): This type of SM serves local lines, and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) users. The LSM is usually referred to as the SM. HSM (Host Switching Module): This type of SM provides the normal LSM subscriber interfaces and also interfaces one or more RSMs (Remote Switching Modules). RSM (Remote Switching Module): This RSM can be as far away as 242 kilometers from the host. UP to 4 RSMs (called a MMRSM (Multi-Mod RSM) In stand alone condition intra SM calls will be metered and will be sent to AM whenever link is through. Communications Module In this module trainees will identify the following modules in CM Message switch- MSCU (Message switch control unit )& MSPU (Message switch peripheral unit ) ONTC Office network Time Complex comprising of CMCU & TMSU (Time multiplex switch unit)

Hands on practice on the terminals of 5ESS exchange. Terminals: There are many types of terminals used with the 5ESS-2000 Switch. There are graphical or non-graphical terminal types. Some of the terminals are classified as follows : MCC (Master Control Center). STLWS (Supplementary Trunk Line Workstation). ROP (receive only printer) Terminals may be assigned to do these tasks where only a few people are authorized. Or, they may be allowed to accept only certain commands and perform tasks such as retiring alarms and maintenance. Master Control Center The MCC is an AM (Administrative Module) peripheral that allows communication between system technician and the 5ESS-2000 Switch. MCC Terminal Applications The MCC terminal may be used to perform the following functions: Emergency Action Recovery allows you to manually recover the system. Trunk and Line Maintenance allows you to monitor, control, test and reconfigure trunks and lines. Recent Change allows you to access the exchange data. Hardware Maintenance allows you to monitor, control, test, and reconfigure the system.

Accessing the terminal: Switch on the terminal. Terminal inservice will be displayed. Cntrl+g is used to access the terminal. Now we can execute the commands

Important Pages on the terminals: INDEX:(100)Main menu will be displayed. BLDG/PWR (105) Backlit when a building or power alarm condition is detected. BLDG INH (106) Backlit and remains on when any building alarm is inhibited. AM (111/112) Backlit when a problem, such as an out-of-service condition, is detected in the AM. AM PERPH (111/112) Backlit when a problem is detected in the AM or an AM Peripheral unit. Given a case where a primary disk drive crashes both the AM PERPH and CRITICAL alarm would be backlit. Additionally, the CRITICAL alarm would e flashing. SM (114) Backlit when a problem is detected in any SM/RSM unit. For instance, a duplexed SM (Switching Module) peripheral unit is out of service, which limits an SM but does not impact call processing. Since call processing can take place, this is considered a minor condition. Both the SM and MINOR alarm indicators would be backlit. CM(115) Backlit when a problem with the CM (Communication Module) is detected. An example, a major CM subunit goes out of service impacting call processing for the switch. In this case, this condition is consideed to be a major problem. Therefore, both the MAJOR alarm and CM would be backlit to indicate the condition, the 115 page is no longer listed on the 110 page. It is shown on the 1005 CM index page. MISC (116) Backlit for items that are not part of other groups. Terminals In EWSD Lab. Two OMTs(Operation and Maintenance terminals) with UNIX as Operating system. Four X-25 Terminals with UNIX as Operating system. Three X-25 Terminals with windows N/T as Operating System. One PC is being used as SYSD.
