Test 2 Summary

Fall 2010

This sheet is only intended to give you some guidance and shouldnt be the only thing you look at. To study for the test, it is a good idea to try doing all the examples in your notes without looking at my work, rework WebAssign questions, and try suggested practice problems for the sections you nd most dicult. As usual, I have oce hours Tuesday from 4-5 and Wednesday from 12:30-2:30. I also work in the Mathematics Multimedia Center (SAS 2103) on Thursdays from 4-5. Ill hold oce hours on Monday afternoon (time TBA). 2.6, 2.7 Introductory Derivative Sections Know the limit denition of derivative and how to use it. Problems of this nature will be easier than the hardest WebAssign problems. Know what it means for a function to be dierentiable or not dierentiable at a point. In these sections, we also discussed the meaning of the derivative (slope of the curve, rate of change, etc.). Applications like nding a tangent line to a curve using the derivative and/or the relationship between position, velocity, and acceleration could be on the test. These concepts may be tested in problems not specically in this section (i.e. in problems where you can use derivative shortcuts or making statements about velocity based on a graph of position, etc). 2.8 What does f say about f ? The point of this section is to understand the relationship between f, f , and f . By looking at a graph of f or of f , be able to state where f is increasing, decreasing, concave upward, concave downward, and/or has local minimums, local maximums, inection points. 3.1 3.4, 3.6, 3.7 Rules of Dierentiation These sections give a lot of rules for dierentiation so that we dont have to use the limit denition of derivative all the time. You should know the rules we covered in class. Some rules will be used in combination with each other (e.g. power rule used within chain rule). Unless specically asked, you do not need to name the rules you are using at each step. In general, I wont tell you which rule to use for a specic problem; you will have to decide which rule(s) best t the situation. The rules/types of functions we covered are: Constant Functions Power Rule Constant Multiple Rule Sum, Dierence Rules Exponential Functions Product Rule Quotient Rule Trigonometric Functions Inverse Trigonometric Functions Chain Rule Power Rule Combined with Chain Rule Logarithmic Functions

3.5, 3.7 Other Ways to Dierentiate Be able to dierentiate implicitly. Know how to use the chain rule to dierentiate terms with y in them. Be able to use logarithmic dierentiation to make a function easier to dierentiate.
