thesis position

This thesis argues that communal living can be achieved by embracing the human life cycle using a system whereby a group of different users at different stages in the life cycle can get together to form clusters and engage in shared spaces without compromising the privacy and comforts of a modern, yet Australian suburban dream. It also closely studies and celebrates the designs of the Boyd House II in South Yarra by Robin Boyd, of its orientation, circulation, zoning and privacy issues. The Life Cycle is an evolution from ones youth to when one starts a family and ages gracefully into their golden years. Living arrangements change at the different stages of life, therefore changing spatial needs accordingly. During the childhood years, fond memories are made in home accommodating a family of 3 or 4. These families potentially look at downsizing when the children move out from home- leaving that extra room for the occasional visits. Upon entering retirement, some people look into further downsizing to a place that would require minimal up keeping, or move to a holiday home that can be left vacant for periods of time.

Recognising the Maribyrnong River as a unique and signicant asset to Footscray, the Riverview Oriented Development (ROD) aims to increase mix-use development by providing the maximum number of residential units enjoying view to the river. By doing so, ROD will draw more residents and visitors to the area, enlivening the area from the river to Footscray Station. ROD strengthens visual and physical connections between the station and the river by providing large areas of open space. ROD will benet the economy of Footscray as water view property produces a higher real estate value. ROD will benet the community as it gives more opportunities for people to interact with the river and open spaces.

Project Brief: Investigate different types of hybrid buildings- platforms and their platformability. Their spatial, typological and morphological characteristics and, programmatic, technical and artistic expressions. Creating language on how to represent it in architecture and urban design was intended. Urban Context South Melbourne Tram Depot. Rich with history of the very rst train lines connecting Port Melbourne and the city, the urban strategy was to recreate a focus on the in-between spaces of daily life. So what lies for this quaint suburb of Port Melbourne between now and the future? A more pedestrian friendly environment was designed together with a gradual change of density throughout the 1.75km long reserve. Project: The Melbourne City Rail Museum acts as one program attached to a central island tram stop platform. One end facing Port Melbourne; the origin and the starting block, and the other end facing the Melbourne CBD that portrays how far the rail system has come. The past can be explored but never changed- the language of how the project shows how it is not a road block but more smooth and continuous , It is the future that the world is interested in- the journey is ongoing. That is the beauty of incompleteness.
