British Politics in the 19th century, Schools edition 1970. Gladstone success in passing the Irish home rule bill in 1886. Cannot easily be explained. Once Gladstone started speaking, te Tory and National Liberal opposition to Irish Home Rule simply seemed to melt away. Some have pointed to Gladstones inspired oratory and leadership. Others to skilful work by the RIC in moving against the Irish militants. Which help bring calm to Ireland . The fact that Gladstone had watered down the powers of the Dublin parliament to little more then an advisory body helped win over Conservative opinion in both Ireland and Britain. That said the passing of the Irish home rule bill is Gladstones' greatest Political achievement. It finally brought Ireland Peace. *************** The Irish Times January 10 1888. Nearly a Hundred Thousand Dubliners lined Sackville Street, to catch a glimpse of their Monarch. As Ireland Loyally welcomed Queen Victoria today to the state opening of the Irish parliament. Whether visiting one of the citys Indian restaurants. Established by Ugandan Asians fleeing Idi Amin. Or one of the citys Bagel shops. Try the Salmon lox!, established by the many Jewish families who settled in Belfast after World war 2. This Alternate history is predicated on an ASB Gladstone manages to pass the home rule for Ireland act into Law. In However I have given the Irish a much weaker Parliament. Basically The Irish do get a Parliament but it has very few powers. However as time goes by and with the outbreak of war in Europe the Irish are able to bargain for real authority for their parliament. In this TL Redmond manages to delay the passing of the Conscription act until the war in Europe is more or less over. Aside from that this is a piece of fun. The references to Dev, and Michael Collins are intended to be humorous. In this Timeline Mrs De Valeria keeps her man, and Dev ends up enhancing the lives of the people of NYC rather then Dublin. I dont know whether it would have been possible for Collins to have become Mayor of NYC in the 1940s. Had the power of the Irish political machines passed? Tom Barry was leader of the IRAs West Cork Brigade in the Anglo Irish war. In OTL he defeated Major Perceval Battalion at Killshanba . Despite being outnumbered 10 to 1. He also spared Percevals life. This would come back to haunt Perceval after the fall of Singapore. When Barry sent an Insulting telegram to Perceval. Which enraged Churchill. What is more interesting about Barry. Is that he had been a British officer in the 1st world war. He had fought in Iraq. He appears to have been quite happy in the service of the Crown. In fact in 1918 it is believed that Barry hoisted the Union flag over Brandon. During the campaigning over the 1918 election. However once Barry was released from service he then appears to have joined the Irish militants, simply because he enjoyed fighting. I have the Irish take Caen on D-Day. Actually two things the Irish regiments in the British army, were know for was a penchant for hand to hand warfare, and rapid marches. Both I think would have come in handy. The First Donegal, and Tyrone volunteers, was a WW1 volunteer regiment. George Best winning the World cup for Ireland. Is quite likely. In This TL there will be no division of the Irish football associations. So like in Rugby Ireland will be able to draw its most able players. In OTL the one time a United Irish team did take the field they held the legendary Brazilian team of 1970 No Partition of Ireland. Sectarian violence dies off. The Southern Unionist stay where they are. Belfast becomes a jewel of the Atlantic rim. Belfast in this TL, gets more immigration, some Jews and Poles after WW2 and the Ugandan Asians. I did realise later that importing large numbers of Jews and Poles into Belfast, might not be condusive to that fair city's peace. But I figure the RIC have things locked down by now. RIC still remain Irelands police force.
