GENERATING RESOURCES FOR PROGRAMS THAT TRANSFORM THE SOCIAL REALITY OF BRAZIL
Dear Friends, In this edition, we are pleased to present the BrazilFoundation IX Annual Gala honorees. You will learn more about the work done by Bernardo Paz, Founder of Inhotim Institute, Luciano Huck, President-Director of the Criar Institute, Renata de Camargo Nascimento, President of the Board of Comunitas. Carlos Saldanha, and Russian model Natalia Vodianova, who will receive special awards during the event. The Gala will also feature an auction with art works, jewelry and unique experiences. The art auction, which is organized by renowned art curator Nessia Pope, includes works by Brazilian and international artists, such as Beatriz Milhazes, Adriana Varejo, Ernesto Neto, Janaina Tschpe, Neville D'Almeida and Helio Oiticica. The auction began online through www.charitybuzz.com and bids can be made online until September 27th. A total of eight art works will be auctioned during the Gala. Please visit the Website! In this edition we also have the pleasure of sharing news about the Donor Advised Program. More than $1 million has been invested in non-profit organizations since the beginning of the year. Check out the interview with Luiz Ribeiro and his amazing pictures taken in June while visiting some of the organizations supported by BrazilFoundation. Luiz is Photo Editor for the New York Post and is a BrazilFoundation friend and supporter. He traveled to five Brazilian states and had the opportunity to capture wonderful pictures and amazing stories. You will also read about CEPFS, the first grantee to be highlighted on the Foundation's website homepage. Meet the BrazilFoundation Grantee project managers Follow the interviews with managers of the 2011 grantee organizations, who are participating in the Project BrazilFoundation 10 Years. The interviews portray everyday life in Brazilian communities, the adversities they face, and their solution they develop to overcome their challenges. Read more
Project Spotlight BrazilFoundation will be highlighting its grantees on the BrazilFoundations website in order to promote their work and to attract direct support from donors. A BrazilFoundation grantee in 2006, 2008, and 2011, CEPFS is responsible for innovative technologies to capture, manage and treat water for rural communities who suffer from drought in Brazils semiarid region, among other essential projects in the region. More than 5,700 people have benefited from the programs offered by CEPFS. Read More
Luiz Ribeiro is photographer and photo editor at the New York Post. He was born in Diamantina, Minas Gerais, and arrived in New York 25 years ago. He has supported BrazilFoundation since 2002, photographing the Annual Gala and other events sponsored by the Foundation in New York. Read more
When John Muir visited the South of Brazil in the early twentieth century, he considered the Araucaria Forest the most interesting one he had ever seen in his life. The American naturalist, who years earlier had convinced the U.S. Congress to create the Yosemite National Park, regretted that Brazil didnt have a protection program for this forest, like the one created to protect the ancient giant sequoias and biological diversity found in California. BrazilFoundation grantees ADEL and Barraca da Amizade awarded by the UNHABITAT's Urban Youth Fund The Urban Youth Fund established by UN-HABITAT has supported several thousand young people across the world to improve their lives and their urban communities. In 2011, in the third edition, 59 organizations were selected in 43 different countries, after a record number of applications. Read more
The Carioca Fund held a reception in Rio de Janeiro in honor of the organizations selected by the First Call for Project Proposals. These civil society organizations (CSOs) train youth between the ages of 14-24 in technical and vocational programs so they can be competitive in Rio de Janeiros expanding job market. On this occasion the talent of
young people who participated in the contest "My Photographed Rio was also celebrated.
