2010 Class: Xth Subject: General Science

School: James Convent Sr. Sec. School Period-I Time: 40m

Topic: Ecology(Abiotic or physical component of Ecosystem)

General Objectives: As per first lesson.

Specific Objectives: As per first lesson.

Teaching Aids: General: Black Board, Chalks, Roller Board etc. Specific: Charts, Audio Video presentation. Teaching Methods: Question and Answer, interactive discussion, demonstration and role play. Teaching Points:1. Climatic Factors (Abiotic Components of Ecosystem) 2. Topographic Factors (Abiotic Components of Ecosystem) 3. Edaphic Factors (Abiotic Components of Ecosystem)

Previous Knowledge: students have basic knowledge of Abiotic factors of Ecosystem. Introductory Question:PT ACTIVITY PUPIL ACTIVITY What are non living substances of the ecosystem Some students reply Abiotic or physical factors. are called? What is the impact of climate on ecosystem? Some reply with example of desert climate of W. Rajasthan. Can you establish shape of a area or type of soil Students are perplexed and there is hush in class affects the ecosystem?

Announcement of Topic:Today we will discuss and learn about Abiotic or physical component of Ecosystem i.e Climatic, Topographic and Edaphic Factors.

Teaching Point Climatic Factors

Pupil Teacher Activity Q-What is the relationship of rainfall in a given area and type of forest found there? Q-What summers and winters around coastal areas are normal in comparison to other areas? Climatic Factors: This includes all such factors which influence the climate of a particular habitat. Following are factors that affect climate of a given region. PrecipitationWhen water vapours present in the air reach the land in any form. (Rain, snowfall, dew etc.)It affects type of forest. Atmospheric humidity- The total amount of water vapour present in the air is called humidity. It affects transpiration in plants and thus species of plants that can survive there. Temperature: Temperature decide distribution of plants and animals. Ex. Arctic region, Sahara etc. Light: Plants are affected by intensity and duration of light. Wind: It affects rate of evaporation and may deform plants present there. Q-How does shape of area affect life? The Topography or the shape of area influences the presence of Plants and Animals. Mount Abu has different plants and animals from those of neighbouring areas due to its height from sea level which causes low temperature.

Students Activity Students are listening attentively and replying queries put by teacher.

Black Board Summary Climatic Factors: Precipitation, Humidity, Temperature, Light and Wind

Topographic Factors

Edaphic Factors

Q-Can we grow Cotton in Jaisalmer? Q-Does the type of soil has impact on crops cultivation? Soil is a complex mixture of rock particles, residues of plants and

animals , mineral salts, water, air and microorganisms. Soil formation is called Edaphication. Type of soils affects the plants growing there.

Recapitulating Questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. Name physical component of Ecosystem? What is the impact of precipitation on types of forest? What is the role of Temperature on plants and animals found in Tundra and Kalahari region? What is the role of soil on types of plants growing there?

Evaluating Questions: MCQ: Q1.) The total amount of water vapour present in the air is called. a..) Saturation Humidity b..)Absolute Humidity c..) Both

Q2.) The duration and intensity of sun light affects a..) Respiration b..) Transpiration c..) Both d..) Photosynthesis

Q.1) Write in detail about impact of climatic factors on Ecosystem. Q.2) How does Topographic and Edaphic factors affect environment? True/false The wind decreases the rate of evaportation. The metabolic activities in living being are affected by temperature.

Fill in the blanks: The soil formation process is called . The shape of a particular region is called .

Home Assignment: Describe impact of climatic factors on plants and animals in hilly areas.
