MDG 1: ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER

TRUE or FALSE: More than one billion people almost a sixth of humanity are now chronically malnourished.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

TRUE: Between 1990 and 2005, signicant progress was made in reducing the worlds population living in extreme poverty from 50 to 25 percent. But the recent global economic crisis has caused progress to stagnate even regress forcing millions more into poverty. For the first time ever, the number of chronically malnourished has risen to one billion.

In 2000 for the rst time in history all world governments recognized they share a responsibility to end poverty. At the UN Millennium Summit, a historic promise was made when the governments signed a global compact called the Millennium Declaration. From this compact, the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were created that aimed to improve the lives of the worlds poorest by 2015. MDG 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION

TRUE or FALSE: 72 million children are still denied the right to education.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

TRUE: Not only do children have a right to an education, but the number of children out of school has a direct impact on other MDGs such as maternal and child health. Evidence shows that an increase in mothers with a primary education is highly correlated to a reduction in child mortality rates, and parents with higher education levels tend to have better nourished children.

MDG 3: PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY

TRUE or FALSE: Gender equality and womens empowerment help accelerate the achievement of all 8 Millennium Development Goals.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

TRUE: Progress on gender equality contributes to the achievement of all the MDGs. Educated girls have better opportunities to earn higher wages and participate in community life and decision-making. They tend to marry later and have fewer, healthier children who are more likely to attend school themselves.

MDG 4: REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY

TRUE or FALSE: Measles vaccine at less than $1.00 per child is one of the most cost-effective health initiatives currently available.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

TRUE: Measles immunization campaigns continue to expand worldwide with a steady increase in coverage, reaching 82 percent of the worlds children in 2007. During this period, measles deaths dropped by an astonishing 74 percent. This is largely due to immunization campaigns and more concentrated efforts in countries with hard-to-reach areas. Globally there were an estimated 197,000 measles-related deaths in 2007, down from 750,000 in 2000.

MDG 5: IMPROVE MATERNAL MORTALITY

TRUE or FALSE: In the developing world, one woman dies every 20 minutes from complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

FALSE: One woman dies every minute. Among the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), least progress has occurred in improving maternal health. The greatest gaps between rich and poor countries and within socio-economic classes in countries happen in maternal mortality. Out of 536,000 deaths annually, 99 percent are in developing countries where less than half the pregnancies receive adequate prenatal care, and only 28 out of 100 births are attended by trained health professionals. MDG 6: COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES

TRUE or FALSE: Since the 1980s more than 60 million people have been infected with HIV; an estimated 25 million have died from related causes.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

TRUE: In 2007 alone, an estimated 33 million people were living with HIV and about 2 million people most in Sub-Saharan Africa died from the disease. A prevalence of myths and a lack of correct knowledge especially among women about transmission and prevention create barriers in decreasing the numbers and combating the spread of the disease.

MDG 7: ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

TRUE or FALSE: Every day an average of 1000 children die due to water and sanitation diseases many are easily preventable.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

FALSE: An average of 5,000 children die daily. The water and sanitation crises disproportionately affect the poor and is mainly rooted in poverty and inequality not physical availability. Almost 1 billion people lack clean drinking water and 2.4 billion people have no access to hygienic sanitation facilities. Dirty water and lack of basic sanitation undermine efforts to eradicate extreme poverty and to eliminate diseases.

MDG 8: GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT

TRUE or FALSE: The responsibility of achieving the MDGs by 2015 lies only with developing countries.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

FALSE: The MDGs represent a global partnership for development. Developing countries must work toward achieving the rst seven Goals through incorporating greater accountability mechanisms and efcient use of resources into programming. But for these countries to achieve the rst seven Goals, it is absolutely critical that developed, wealthier countries provide additional and more effective aid, more sustainable debt relief and fairer trade rules well in advance of 2015.
