SMOKE
Smoke Control in Buildings and Stairwell Pessurization.

SMOKE is a DOS program for calculating the air flows and pressure differences throughout a building in which a smoke control system is in operation. The program was obtained from the National Technical Information Service in the U.S.A. and is described in the ASHRAE publication "Design of Smoke Control Systems for Buildings" written by John H. Klote and John W. Fothergill Jnr. It is an extension of an earlier program written by John Klote specifically for the analysis of pressurized stairwells and elevators. The extensions include: Stairwells with vestibules Elevators with elevator lobbies Zoned smoke control systems Pressurised corridors The program is not WINDOWS based, ACADS-BSG has added a screen based, menu driven data entry module with detailed help panels to make the input of data to the program easier.

Although largely superseded by CFD programs, it is still a useful program for carrying out a simple analysis. It is very dependent on the users assessment of air leakage between spaces. METHODOLOGY The program models a building as a network of spaces as compartments, each at a specific temperature or pressure. The stairwells, elevators and other shafts are modelled as a series of vertical spaces, one for each floor. Air flows through leakage paths from regions of high pressure to regions of low pressure. These leakage paths are doors and windows that may be modelled as being open or closed. Leakage can also occurr through partitions, floors, exterior walls and roofs. In the model, air from outside the building can be introduced by the pressurization system into any level of a shaft or even into other building spaces. This allows the simulation of stairwell, elevator shaft and stairwell vestibule pressurization, and pressurization of any other building space. In addition, any building space can be exhausted. The pressures throughout the building and flow rates through all the flow paths are obtained by solving the airflow network, including the driving forces such as wind, the pressurization system, or an inside to outside temperature difference.
