Optical Internet Backbone

For established service providers who are seeing continued growth in demand for 2 Mbit/s line services, the Nortel Networks TN-4T is an STM-4 terminal multiplexer that provides high-availability, high-density 2 Mbit/s service access to the SDH transport network. Unlike other possible alternatives, this solution minimises the investment requirement by our customers to scale their network infrastructure and meet new service demands.

Introduction
Mainstream service providers and network operators deploying SDH transport networks are seeing a sustained growth in demand for 2 Mbit/s private line services. According to various industry analysts, 2 Mbit/s service revenue across European and International markets is projected to increase at a CAGR in the range of 9-18% to 2005 despite declining service tariffs. Demand is driven from several applications, including enterprise data networking and GSM mobile networks as well as traditional voice network support. Since private or leased line services a primary contributor to core profitable revenue for most providers form the bulk of transport network requirements, its essential to both lower the cost of supporting those services and also increase the efficiency of supporting those services. The Nortel Networks TransportNode TN-4T helps service providers to reduce network complexity and ensure maximum return on their SDH infrastructure investment, as even demand for 2 Mbit/s service transport increases.

Product Description
The TN-4T is a full member of Nortel Networks portfolio of solutions for Optical Metro networks. It is an STM-4 terminal multiplexer that increases the density of 2 Mbit/s service provision and lowers the footprint and power requirements at an operating location, compared with previously available alternatives. It can be deployed in a number of terminal and hub configurations to flexibly suit different network deployment scenarios. The TN-4T provides full access to an STM-4 transport aggregate at VC-12 granularity delivering up to 252x protected 2 Mbit/s service interfaces per shelf.

For example a TN-4T can be configured to feed into an STM-4 or STM-16 ring using OPTera Metro 4100 or 4200. This setup allows add/drop or through VC-12 connections to be configured at other OPTera Metro 4000 network elements around the ring. A TN-4T can also be configured to feed into an STM-16 ring using TN-16X. In this setup, the connection is a linear point-topoint connection since a TN-16X manages signals at the VC-4 level. Any TN-16X network elements must be configured with a through STM-4 connection.

High Service Availability

High service availability is assured due to the TN-4T product architecture. Core functions (PSU, shelf controller) are duplicated and the dual STM-4 aggregate interfaces are configured with 1+1 MSP. Tributary cards are protected at a 1:N (N is 4 maximum) level to best meet the economic tradeoffs. All Nortel Networks management communications to SDH network elements use an integral Data Communications Network (DCN) that minimises the use of external data communications equipment. Our full adherence to OSI networking standards, including the use of ISO ES-IS and IS-IS routing protocols, means that DCN routing is self-configuring and selfhealing adapting dynamically and automatically to changes in the network.

Network Applications
Primary applications of the TN-4T are in local and regional SDH networks, where service providers need to efficiently deliver and/or aggregate a singificant number of 2 Mbit/s services.

Key Benefits
High service availability High service density High scalability Fully managed solution Flexible deployment

High Service Density

In conjunction with OPTera Metro 4100 and 4200 SDH multiservice platforms, the TN-4T terminal multiplexer can aggregate and deliver their full payload capacity at a VC-12 granularity and support up to 252 (per STM-4) and 1008 (per STM-16) 2 Mbit/s standard service interfaces in a compact footprint. A total of 3 OPTera Metro 4000 and/or TN-4T shelves can be configured in a standard ETSI equipment rack.

TN-4T supports proven remote download of operational and configuration software and upload of configuration data, without impacting live traffic. This enables in-service upgrades to be efficiently carried out from a central location. Presides range of value-added management applications deliver rapid, right first-time end-to-end service activation together with network-wide service assurance. As well as dramatically speeding up time-to-revenue, this minimises service downtime and maximises utilisation of network resources.

Product Features
Up to 252x 2 Mbit/s tributaries per shelf (ETSI compliant) supporting VC-12 connectivity Up to 8x electrical interface cards, 32x 2 Mbit/s asynchronous tributaries per card, (PDH G.703 with 75 ohm and 120 ohm interface options) Dual STM-4 G.957 S.4.1 short-haul optical aggregate interfaces with Automatic Laser Shutdown (ALS) 1+1 Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) of STM-4 optical interfaces 1:N protection of tributary cards (N=4 maximum) Duplicated PSU and SEMF (shelf controller) functions Synchronisation via STM-4 interfaces or built-in G.813 timing source Comprehensive fault monitoring and performance monitoring to G.826 F interface (RS-232) for local craft access terminal (PC with HTML browser or Command Line interface) Q3 interface via Embedded Communications Channel (ECC) to EC-1 (Element Controller) and/ or Nortel Networks Preside service-enabling software Power (range -38 V to -75 V DC)

High Scalability
The TN-4T is a full member of Nortel Networks OPTera Metro family of Multiservice SDH and DWDM transport solutions. It can be deployed on a per-shelf basis to meet capacity demands and service interface cards added as required with low initial costs.

Flexible Deployment
The extension shelf concept gives flexibility in physical deployment to suit any practical constraints or requirements that may exist. For example, the TN-4T shelf may be located close to a large voice switch facility, thus minimising cable interconnections, whilst the main SDH transport node is located elsewhere. The TN-4T is fully compatible with other Nortel Networks optical networking products including our established OPTera Metro 4100, 4200, TransportNode 16X, 64X and OPTera Connect DX products, allowing our customers to tune-up their networks and develop a more efficient network utilisation. When combined with our OPTera Metro 5000 DWDM transport platform, a new set of applications may be addressed by the TN-4T.

Fully Managed Solution

Like the OPTera Metro family products, the TN-4T is fully managed by Nortel Networks Preside, which provides comprehensive element, network and service management across multi-vendor, multi-domain networks. Full remote access to each TN-4T from the management centre, including fault and performance monitoring and configuration management ensures fast deployment and rapid problem resolution, all with minimum need for site visits.
