Avant Z- See the Difference!

OPACITY AND TRANSLUCENCY

The opacity scale, expressed in Opacity Units (O.U.), ranging from 0 to 100, is used to express the relative opacity of a porcelain to other porcelains. A measurement of 0 indicates a complete transmission of light (clear glass), and 100 indicates complete reflectance of light (opaque). This scale helps to plan segmental porcelain layering in restorations to control light reflectance and transmission to create desired effects.

FLUORESCENCE
Natural dentition exhibits fluorescent properties which contribute to the visual aesthetics of natural teeth. In order for a dental restoration to provide the highest aesthetics, the restorative material must fluoresce light at the same wavelength as the surrounding natural dentition. Natural teeth generally fluoresce in the blue-white region of the visible light spectrum. Avant Z porcelain was designed with true-to-nature fluorescence that closely resembles the fluorescence of natural teeth.

OPALESCENCE
Opalescent materials appear orange in light transmission and blue in light reflectance; opalescent porcelains contain particles that scatter, reflect, and refract incident light. As a result, opalescent porcelain creates vitality in dental restorations and provides the translucency of a natural tooth without unnatural greyness or whiteness. The result is a natural-looking restoration that blends extremely well with the patients own teeth under a variety of light sources.

SHADING
The Avant Z porcelain shade system is spectrophotometrically engineered to provide predictable accuracy in hue, chroma, and value. Each component (eg. Z Stain, dentin pellet, translucent pellet, press incisal, opaceous body, body, incisal, modifiers) is coordinated to ensure the utmost shade accuracy in the final restoration. In addition, the aesthetic characteristics of Avant Z porcelain promote a natural match to adjacent dentition by way of three fabrication techniques: Avant Z Translucent Pellets: Stain and Glaze Technique, Avant Z Dentin Pellets: Cutback and Layer Technique, and Avant Z Layering Technique. The coordinated shading, fluorescence, and opalescence of Avant Z porcelain enable the fabrication of aesthetic multi-unit cases regardless of technique. Please note that Avant Z Shades are formulated to coordinate with both white zirconia cores using Z Stain and Lava* shaded zirconia cores. When using other manufacturers shaded zirconia, please select the ones which match closest to Lava shades. * Not a registered trademark of Pentron Ceramics, Inc.

Substructure Design & Preparation

Not all Y-TZP-zirconium oxide frameworks are the same. Please refer to zirconia manufacturers instructions for specific design and preparation guidelines. Since Avant Z Porcelain is indicated for use with 100% dense Y-TZP zirconia frameworks with a CTE of (10-11) x 10-6/C, it is important to follow the specific zirconia manufacturers instructions for design. Observing the prescribed design, minimum thicknesses and connector dimensions contributes to the success of the restoration.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
The zirconia substructure must be designed to provide support for porcelain overlay. It should be designed following the anatomy of the tooth. In large preparations, the excess space must be compensated by the designed zirconia rather than the porcelain material. Minimum thickness: 0.3 mm in the anterior region; 0.6 mm in the posterior region Connector Dimensions: 7 12 mm2 in the anterior region; 9 12 mm2 in the posterior region

Avant Z Stain

Avant Z Stains are compatible with all YTZP Zirconia frameworks. Their thin application (10-30 microns) on white zirconia substructures enhances the bonding and aesthetics of both layered and pressed restorations. Avant Z Stains (Z1-Z7) were designed to simulate Lava* shaded frameworks. Visual comparison to a Lava framework or Avant Z Stain shade guide pictured above is necessary to ensure its proper application. Avant Z Stain is not required for making bleach shades (A00, B00, and Superbleach). For additional characterization, Avant Z Stains and Modifiers can be applied to any white or shaded zirconia substructure.

Avant Z Pressing Guidelines

Wax crowns to full contour anatomy onto the prepared zirconia substructure and maintain a minimum wax thickness of 0.7mm. Waxing up in the reduced form can also be done for the Cutback and Layer technique. Use 8 gauge wax sprues (48 mm in length) to attach crowns to sprue base. When spruing a bridge, use one sprue per unit. To determine the amount of pellets to use, weigh the zirconia framework before waxing. Once the wax-up is complete, weigh the restoration again including sprues. The difference in weight is the WEIGHT of WAX.

Avant Z Pressing Guidelines

Invest and burnout ring according to investment manufacturers instructions. DO NOT pre-heat Avant Z pellets. Following proper burnout time, rapidly place pellet/s and pre-heated disposable plunger into ring. Transfer immediately onto pressing furnace platform and begin pressing program. See page 22 for pressing parameters. Once ring has cooled down to room temperature, divest by scoring the ring lengthwise. Carefully pry apart sections with lab knife. Use 50 micron glass beads at 40psi to remove remaining investment. Blasting at pressures greater than 40psi is too abrasive and will damage the surface of the crown. Keeping the restorations wet with water, cut off sprues using a diamond disc. Use only fine diamond burs for final contouring. Do not generate excessive heat or vibration as it may cause cracks. If contacts are missing or additional contour is required, they may be added using Avant Z Repair Porcelain.

Avant Z Translucent Pellets:

Stain & Glaze Technique

After sprue removal, clean the crown thoroughly by steam cleaning and/or ultrasonically cleaning before applying surface stains. artiStains LFS stains are mixed with Stain and Glaze liquid to a creamy consistency. Use a shade tab to plan the amount and position of color on the restoration. To achieve a basic shade, follow the Shade Coordination Chart and apply the recommended Cervical Stain and Incisal Stain. The extent of color applied to the cervical, middle, and incisal third of the crown is dictated by your shade guide sample. For example, B1 will have a slight amount of color at the cervical edge, whereas D4 will have color drawn up to the end of the cervical half. For darker shades, hue and chroma can be intensified by multiple layers of stain instead of a single, thick application. For posterior teeth, apply stain to occlusal fossae, pits, and fissures to characterize the restoration. Once proper hue, chroma, and value are achieved with stains, clean the restoration in an ultrasonic cleaner with distilled water or steam clean before glazing. Apply Avant Z Paste Glaze onto the entire surface of the restoration. Avant Z Glaze has been formulated in paste form to provide the correct viscosity to achieve proper thickness and coverage of glaze. If necessary, Avant Z Glaze can be diluted by using Stain and Glaze Liquid. Please note that over-dilution with Stain and Glaze Liquid will result in an underfused appearance.

PRESSED CORE CONTOURING AND CUTBACK:

Cut off sprue using a diamond disc. Keep restoration wet with water during sprue removal and grinding. Use only fine diamond burs for final contouring. Do not generate excessive heat or vibration as it may cause cracks. Cutback and contour the incisal surface of the crown to make room for subsequent addition of layering materials. Be sure to maintain a minimum thickness of 0.7mm so that shade is not affected. Clean the crown thoroughly by steam cleaning and/or ultrasonically cleaning before applying layering materials. Apply the recommended Avant Z Press incisal to the cutback crown and fire per firing chart. Once the proper shade is achieved, glaze the restoration using Avant Z Glaze. Additional characterizations can be achieved using artiStains LFS stain.

Avant Z Layering Powders

Easy and reliable shade reproduction can be achieved by layering Avant Z body and opal incisal powders using traditional layering techniques. Natural looking restorations can be created through the use of Opaceous shades and modifiers, Opal ITIs, and Translucent Blush Modifiers. These options enable ceramists to control translucency, opacity, hue, chroma, and value in every layer. Additional characterizations can be achieved using artiStains LFS stains and Avant Z Glaze.

It is important to determine the ideal fusion temperature in your furnace through visual confirmation. Properly fused restorations exhibit preserved surface texture and anatomy with a high surface shine.

Ring Cracks During Pressing The top and/or bottom surface of the invested ring is not perpendicular to the pressing surface Line the paper ring up evenly when investing and ensure the stabilizer and leveling rings are properly seated flush to the investment. Remove any residual flash from the top of the ring after set and ensure that the bottom of the ring is even and smooth. Check the refractory investment instructions to verify the proper investing ratios.

The investment was not properly prepared; the dilution factor used was greater than or less than the prescribed amount Pressing platform has debris causing an uneven surface The plunger was not properly seated in the ring The pressure setting of the compressed air source is too high Improper burnout process was used The shape of the prepared wax up is jagged with sharp edges Too many pellets were used in the 100g ring The pellet material is not soft enough during pressing

Clean the surface of the pressing platform so it is free of any debris. Make sure the plunger is upright, clean and perpendicular to the pressing surface before starting the pressing cycle. Ensure the compressor is set at 120 psi and that the pressure setting on the pressing furnace is between 4.5 and 5.5 bars (68-83 psi, average 75 psi). Refer to the refractory investment instructions for proper burnout cycle. Round off the edges of the wax ups and the sprue connections. Use only 1 pellet for a 100g press. Increase the pressing temperature (T2) by increments of 5C. To fine tune, increase the pressing time (H2) by 35 minutes.

Core Cracks After Pressing The ring was divested too quickly The wax up is too thin Ensure the ring is cool to the touch before divesting. Increase the thickness of the wax pattern. Wax patterns must be at least 0.7mm thick. Use zirconia with a CTE of (10-11) x a10-6/C

The CTE of the Zirconia substructure is not compatible with Avant Z pellets. Divesting with materials other than glass beads The sprue length is too long or too short

Use only glass beads for divesting patterns. Observe the correct pressure in sandblaster. The sprue length must be at least 4mm and should not exceed 8mm length. The total height of units and sprues together should be less than 18mm. Lower the pressing temperature (T2) by increments of 5C.

Incorrect pressing temperature used. Overheating of the core during pressing is a common cause for cracking. The pressure setting of the compressed air source is too high Too much heat was produced during grinding

Ensure the compressor is set at 120 psi and that the pressure setting on the pressing furnace is between 4.5 and 5.5 bars (68-83 psi, average 75 psi). Always wet the core before and during grinding to prevent excessive heat.

TROUBLESHOOTING: Pressing Technique

Porosity in Pressed Core (contd) An oxide residue formed during the burnout stage Do not burnout items other than those to be used with Avant Z at the same time. Be sure a complete burnout has been achieved or carbon residue trapped in the refractory investment ring will contaminate the restoration, muffle, and the platform of your pressing furnace. Break the skin of the restoration using an appropriate grinding medium then blast the core with glass beads at 30 psi. Clean the restoration with steam or an ultrasonic cleaner before adding porcelain. Apply petroleum jelly to the base of the ring former and to the bottom of the leveling ring. Clean and purge burnout furnace and pressing furnace regularly. Ensure thorough burnout of rings.

Porosity in the Overlay Porcelain

The surface of pressed core not prepared or cleaned properly

Investment Sticks to Ring Former

Ring former was not properly prepared with petroleum jelly Contaminant in burnout oven, refractory investment, pressing furnace platform or furnace muffle

TROUBLESHOOTING: Stain & Glaze Technique

Unable to attain shade using stain recommendations Uncoordinated pellet and stain selection Mixing of hues Use the chart on Page 20 as a guide for pellet and stain selection. Bake stain layers separately. Multiple stain bakes will not affect fit. Fire each stain application separately before applying subsequent layers. Hue and chroma can be intensified by multiple layers of stain instead of a single, thick application. Apply glaze in a subsequent bake. Mixing stain with glaze dilutes stain concentration. Using the Layering Technique will affect light transmission and the translucency of the finished restoration.

Low Chroma

Single, thick application of stain

Stain and glaze (powder) applied together

Lowered or Increased Translucency

Application of overlay porcelains of varying opacities

TROUBLESHOOTING: Layering Powders

Cloudy Gingival/ Incisal with Lack of Translucency Porcelain was under-fired Increase first bake high temperature until the proper fired appearance is achieved. Verify furnace temperature accuracy and calibrate as necessary. Use only Avant Z Build-Up liquid, Avant Z Modeling liquid, or distilled water to wet porcelain. Use distilled water only for second wetting if necessary. Use distilled water only to reconstitute porcelain. Refer to the firing chart for proper settings. Verify furnace temperature accuracy and calibrate as necessary. Check hose connections and pump function. Increase vacuum setting to maximum, if necessary. Reduce the firing rate by up to 13C/min (25F/min). Build porcelain to a uniform thickness. See Firing Parameters on Page 23. Dry time is 5 minutes minimum. Increase dry time by 3-5 minutes as necessary. Add porcelain powder. Reduce the firing rate by up to 13C/min (25F/min) as needed.

Incorrect build-up liquid was used

Porcelain was reconstituted with more build-up liquid or modeling liquid Vacuum was released too early Poor vacuum in furnace

Firing rate is too rapid

Unable to Achieve a Natural Glaze Glaze temperature is too low Glaze temperature can be increased to 8C (15F) less than the second bake temperature. Restoration can be polished. Remove surface glaze and clean the restoration. Proceed with porcelain build-up. Verify furnace temperature accuracy and calibrate as necessary. Use a very thin blade edge to open interproximals almost to the opaque layer. Increase temperature by 5C (about 10F) until glazed surface is achieved. Do not over dilute paste with Glaze liquid.
