Write note on bilging, ballasting process and function of pumping and piping system? The function of pumping and piping system is to pump out bilges and ballasting and deballasting the tank system. Bilge system: Bilge systems consist of following: Bilge pumps, pipes connecting, pump to holds, tunnel & E.R. bilges. All the bilge line valves are non-return type. At the end of bilge pipes a rose box or strainer is connected. Bilge may be in the form drains from drains from engine or leak from leaking pipes or from damaged or wasted shell plate. 38

Close the sea suction valve & open pumps bilge valve. Once the bilge has been pumped out wash the pump with seawater. Ballast System: Every ship is equipped with two ballast pumps. The ships ballast tanks are filled to trim the ship. When the ship is in ballast specially to immerse the propeller to obtain maximum speed of the ship. Ballasting system consists of. 1. Ballast tanks, which may be fore peak tank, deep tanks, double bottom tanks or wing tanks. 2. Centrifugal pump with an air extractor. 3. Pipes and valves.
