COURSE SYLLABUS HUMAN RESOURCE MGT

Gomez ( MBA ) Phone: 09277944663 Email: Lizadalida@yahoo.com Course Description: Personnel techniques included in management, business and industry, such as selection, placement, testing, orientation, training, counseling, and promotion. Study of practical techniques of selecting, developing, and maintaining a competent labor force. Textbook: Managing Human Resources, 13th Ed., Bohlander and Snell, or any Personnel Management Book

Requirements: 1. Assignments will include completion of review questions, analyses, and case studies on various aspects of personnel management. . 2. Written assignments may be typed (if possible) or legibly hand written, and 2-3 pages in length.

EXPECTED STUDENT OUTCOMES Upon completion , students are expected to be able to: 1. Explain the strategic nature of human resource planning and the effect of such on competitiveness within the global marketplace. 2. Conduct an analysis of the needs of a position and how to recruit and select staff to fill such positions. 3. Explain the need to be sensitive to and to implement an equal employment opportunity plan. 4. Critically analyze the need for employee training and development, not only during initial orientation, but also periodically as careers progress. 5. Suggest means for appraisal of individual employee performance and assess their effectiveness in meeting the needs of the organization related to executive compensation. 6. Analyze factors to be considered in relation to employee compensation, incentives, and employee benefits as well as special conditions related to executive compensation. 7. Independently define problems and formulate and assess solutions related to union/management relations in the areas of health, safety, security, employee rights, and discipline. 8. Explain the collective bargaining process and grievance management. 9. Discuss at least two subjects in human resource management under discussion in current literature within the discipline. 10. Prepare a resume and assist with individual career planning.

(2) What are the six competitive challenges facing human resources management departments? #2 Due Wednesday, September 7: (From Chapter 2) (1) What are some of the reasons why affirmative action remains controversial? (2) What are the steps involved in filing and investigating an equal opportunity charge? (3) Why is it important for managers to pay close attention to fair employment practices? #3 Due Wednesday, September 21: (From Chapter 3) (1) Compare and contrast three approaches to job analysis: functional job analysis (FJA); the position analysis questionnaire (PAQ); and the critical incident technique (CIT). (2) Describe the job characteristics that motivate employees. (From Chapter 4) (3) Describe the three key elements of the HRP model. (4) Compare and contrast the advantages of internal and external sources of recruitment. #4 Due Wednesday, October 5: (From Chapter 5) (1) Identify and explain the five primary types of employment tests. (2) Career development programs often contain segments designed to further the advancement of special groups within an organization. Briefly discuss some of the ways employers can facilitate the career development of women. (From Chapter 8) (3) What are the four basic considerations for establishing performance standards? (4) Briefly describe the criticisms of management by objectives (MBO) and discuss the requirements for a successful MBO program. #6 Due Wednesday, October 26: (From Chapter 9) (1) Two important compensation issues are wage-rate compression and equal pay for comparable work. Briefly define and discuss each of these issues. (2) Briefly discuss the motivating value of pay equity and pay expectancy for employees. (3) Briefly discuss the legal requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act used to regulate employee compensation. #7 Due Wednesday, November 9: (From Chapter 10) (1) Discuss the problems

identified with merit raises. As a manager what would you do to insure that merit raises fulfilled their intended value? (2) Identify the principal methods for compensating salespersons and the advantages of each method. (From Chapter 11) (3) Explain why an organization may choose to develop a cafeteria benefits plan for its employees. (4) Compare and contrast the risks to the employee in regard to defined-contribution and defined-benefit pension plans. #8 Due Wednesday, November 16: (From Chapter 12) (1) Explain the role of the supervisor in creating a safe work environment. (2) You have just been asked by your department manager to write a violence prevention policy for your department. What areas should be covered in the policy. Include a statement of how a threat to another employee should be handled. (3) Compare and contrast the two general types of stress. Include an example of each. (4) List and describe techniques for coping with stress. #9 Due Wednesday, November 23: (From Chapter 13) (1) Describe progressive and positive discipline, noting the differences between these two approaches. (From Chapter 14) (2You are a union organizer for the Office Workers National Union. You have been contacted by two employees of the EZ Insurance corporate office who want your union to help them organize EZ. They have already started organizing and have asked you to explain the way(s) that their union can become recognized or certified. (3) Explain why there are more techniques like final-offer arbitration available for resolving deadlocks in negotiations in the public sector than for such impasses in the private sector. (4) Discuss the various contemporary challenges facing labor organizations today. How are unions attempting to meet these challenges? #10 Due Wednesday, November 30: (From Chapter 15) (1) Describe the effects that different components of the cultural environment can have on HRM in an international firm. (2) Read Case Study 2 How Deloitte Builds Global Expertise, p. 679-683. Answer the three questions at the end of the case, p. 683.
