PREPARATORY PRAYER
TOGETHER: I am the way, and the
truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me. (John 14:6) O Jesus, I believe You. If You willed to suffer so much in your Passion, it was not only in order to pay for my sins, but also in order to show me the path which leads to Heaven, in order to manifest which are the most beautiful virtues for a child of God. O Jesus, in order to follow You better, I want to admire each of Your steps on the way to Calvary, and I ask You to impress on my soul all the virtues that You practised in a heroic degree during those holy hours. O Mary, my good Mother, guide me in the imitation of your divine Son. Help me grow in Christian virtue throughout all the trials of my life. FIRST STATION Jesus is condemned to Death

V. Adoramus te, Christe et be- V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we nedicimus tibi. praise Thee. R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou redemisti mundum. hast redeemed the world.
PRIEST: Because of the grave disorder of sin, suffering and death entered the world as a satisfaction of justice. Our Lord, after having seen all of our sins during His Agony, offers to drink the chalice of all the sufferings willed by the Divine Majesty. Knowing the gravity of our offences, He is not surprised at being overwhelmed with so many evils, and so He does not allow one complaint to escape. To the degree that our knowledge and sorrow for our sins is profound, so will sufferings seem normal to us throughout the course of our life. PEOPLE: O Jesus, I ask of You the grace to maintain an intense and profound sorrow for all my sins, so that I might endure peacefully and generously all the sufferings that You send me.

SECOND STATION Jesus is made to carry His Cross

PRIEST: Jesus begins by embracing His Cross with a long look of love. From all eternity, He has loved it and desired it. All of His fruitfulness and glory flow from His intimate union with the Cross. This very Cross is always offered to us, under the names of injustice, humiliation, separation from the world, poverty, suffering... It always produces the same fruits. Friends of the Cross. What a glorious title! I must confess that I am charmed and captivated by it. It is brighter than the sun, higher than the heavens, more magnificent and resplendent than all the titles given to kings and emperors. It is the glorious title of Jesus Christ, true God and true man. It is the genuine title of a Christian (St. Louis de Montfort). PEOPLE: O Jesus, I ask you to give me a little of Your love of the Cross, so that it will direct all my desires.

THIRD STATION Jesus falls the First Time

PRIEST: There is no progress in the Christian life without true humility. As Saint Augustine says: You dream of perfection... first establish the foundation of humility. The acquisition of this virtue calls for three steps which correspond to the three falls of our Saviour. The first consists in accepting and loving ones own nothingness, ones misery and weakness. Thus, it is necessary to destroy every form of self-love refusing reality or not loving the reality of what we are. It is a matter of eliminating every form of independence, of spite over ones faults, of discouragement. It is a question of loving ones own limits, being detached, often giving thanks, taking counsel. PEOPLE: O Jesus, I know that I am nothing, that I can do nothing without You. Obtain for me, by the merits of Your fall, the grace to live this reality joyfully and profoundly.

FOURTH STATION Jesus meets His Sorrowful Mother

PRIEST: What is the great difference between the saints and us? It is that they live in the presence of God and are moved by the love of God. That is why they are continually outdoing themselves, out of joy for giving pleasure to God. The look of Jesus crosses that of His Mother in order to ask us to live in Her maternal presence, that we might advance always on the path of virtue in the midst of all the trials of life. PEOPLE: O Mary, I know that since my baptism, you have adopted me as your child. I know that your eyes never leave me. Only help me to be more often aware of your loving presence. There are graces of encouragement in your glance. I wish to profit from them each day in order to advance in the path of virtue.

FIFTH STATION Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry His Cross

PRIEST: Jesus wants to be solaced by a man on His way of the Cross, in order to make us understand that everything we do for the good of our neighbour, for the love of God, is done for Our Lord. Thus, the practice of fraternal charity is made easy by a spirit of faith. Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these My least brethren, you did it to me (Matt. 25:40). Consequently, we can comfort Our Lord by each of our works of charity: counselling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, correcting sinners, consoling the afflicted, forgiving offences, patiently bearing with those under our charge, praying for the living and the dead, visiting the sick, giving alms. PEOPLE: O Jesus, I want to prove my love to You by doing good to every member of Your Mystical Body.

SIXTH STATION Veronica wipes the Face of Jesus

V. Adoramus te, Christe et be- V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we nedicimus tibi. bless Thee. R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou redemisti mundum. hast redeemed the world.
PRIEST: True love of God leads us not only to eliminate our own sinfulness, but also to do everything to diminish it in the soul of our neighbour. Alas, we do not care enough about this and it is not even uncommon that we drag our neighbour into sin by injurious words, by movements of anger, by criticism or detraction. By wiping the face of Our Lord covered with blood and spittle, Saint Veronica shows us how generous we should be in seeking to diminish the stains of sin in the soul of our neighbour, for the love of God. PEOPLE: O Jesus, I know that I can lead my neighbour into sin through my acts or my words. I beseech You to help me that I might never allow myself to commit this evil, but rather that I may be attentive to draw my neighbour away from sin.

SEVENTH STATION Jesus falls the Second Time

PRIEST: The second degree of humility consists in loving to have our nothingness and misery known by our neighbour in the same degree that we know it. It is a question of avoiding all seeking of the esteem of others. That is why the humble soul easily acknowledges his faults and his limitations to others. Moreover, he attributes to God and to those who have helped him all the good that he does. Allow others to consider you to be imperfect. That is what is necessary, for then you can practise humility, which consists not only in thinking and saying that you are full of faults, but in being happy that others think and say so. (St. Thrse of Lisieux) PEOPLE: O Jesus, help me to love to live in the truth, to accept being known for what I truly am, a sinful creature. I know that, in your goodness and mercy, you only incline towards the humble. That is why I seek this virtue.

EIGHTH STATION Jesus consoles the Women of Jerusalem

PRIEST: Our Lord meets with a group of women who weep at seeing how He is being treated. Jesus could have made use of their compassionate dispositions in order to explain His pains and sufferings, to speak of Himself. But no, His regard remains fixed on God, on God being offended, and He invites them to do penance, to suffer with Him in reparation for their sins and those of their neighbours. Meditation on the way of the Cross should lead to a more generous practice of voluntary penance, in order to participate better in the work of redemption. Let us not be friends of Jesus Crucified only in appearance and sentiment, but in truth and action. PEOPLE: O Jesus, remind me often of this duty of voluntary penance. O Mary, you who have recalled the necessity of this practice in each of your apparitions, obtain for me the grace to be more generous and more regular in its exercise.

NINTH STATION Jesus falls the Third Time

PRIEST: The third degree of humility consists in desiring to be treated according to what we are, namely, to be forgotten because we are nothing, and to be humiliated because we are sinners. O Jesus! Grant that no one care about me, that I be trodden under foot, forgotten like a little grain of sand! As Isaias says: Jesus was without beauty, without comeliness; His face was, as it were, hidden... I also want to be like Jesus, without comeliness or beauty, unknown to every creature. I have sought to be a forgotten flower whose perfume is only exhaled next to the cross. (St. Thrse of Lisieux) When you are corrected, do more than submit yourself. Be joyful and say thank you. (Sr. Elizabeth of the Trinity) To be forgotten by God, mistreated by men, that is what we deserve, for we have offended the Infinite Goodness. PEOPLE: O Jesus, give me also this profound desire to be forgotten and humiliated, so that I might acquire humility and live according to the truth.

TENTH STATION Jesus is stripped of His Garments

PRIEST: God looks at the heart, ones intentions, much more than at ones actions. And unfortunately many of our words and actions are tainted: self-love is mingled in, or self-interest, vanity, sensitivity, egoism. In order to make up for this deceit, this hypocrisy in our hearts, Our Lord in sorrow is despoiled of his garments. He appears to the eyes of all such as He is: the man of sorrows for the love of God and souls. Too often, we have a cloak of appearance which hides our miserable interior. PEOPLE: O Jesus, help me by the merits of all your holy wounds, to purify my intentions before acting or speaking. May the pure love of God always reign over my thoughts.

ELEVENTH STATION Jesus is nailed to the Cross

PRIEST: In as much as we are creatures, we have a simple and sufficient means of sanctifying ourselves always and everywhere: the generous fulfilment of the will of God, for the love of God. This requires a continual renouncement of ones own will and ca-prices. St. Thrse of the Child Jesus said: From the age of four, I have never refused anything of the good God. In order to make reparation for all of our resistance to the will of God, Our Lord accepts the most sorrowful dependence possible: that of the three nails. They symbollise the three Divine Persons who are owed a generous submission on our part. PEOPLE: O Jesus, You found the strength to go forward on this terrible way of the Cross, because You had in the depth of Your heart an ideal: the will of the Father. Help me keep the same ideal in the depths of my heart throughout the course of my days.

TWELFTH STATION Jesus dies on the Cross

PRIEST: I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you (Matt. 5:43). This commandment greatly surpasses human forces. Only mercy can be the crowning of charity. It is the triumph of good over evil. It is the victory of charity over sin. With mercy, there is not only question of patiently suffering injustices, of taking a distance from ones persecutors, but also of acting positively for the spiritual good of our enemies. St. Thrse of the Child Jesus rendered all the services possible to an impossible old sister. PEOPLE: O Jesus, mercy is truly the fruit of the triumph of grace over nature. Grant me to grow in this virtue.

THIRTEENTH STATION Jesus is taken down from the Cross and placed in the Arms of His Mother
PRIEST: Behold your Mother! By this word on the cross, Jesus confides the Most Holy Virgin to us for our spiritual life. This is what St. Thrse will call the way of spiritual childhood, whose secret is found in Marian devotion. This way, a way of complete simplicity, rests on love for, or more precisely on confidence in and abandonment to the Most Holy Virgin. Thrse always had recourse to her Mother in heaven, in order to prepare herself for Communion, and also to hold up well in the midst of sufferings or give proper counsel to her novices. She loved to confide in Our Lady: I do not hide anything from the Most Holy Virgin; I tell Her all. She loved to contemplate the Christian virtues shown forth throughout the life of the Mother of God. PEOPLE: O Jesus, You Who entrusted us to Your Holy Mother on the cross, help me depend more and more on Her, in following the way of spiritual childhood taught by St. Thrse.

FOURTEENTH STATION Jesus is laid in the Sepulchre

PRIEST: You know that you are living temples of the Holy Ghost and that, like living stones, you are to be set by the God of love into the building of the heavenly Jerusalem. And so you must expect to be shaped, cut and chiselled under the hammer of the cross; otherwise, you would remain rough stones, good for nothing but to be cast aside It may be that this skilful and loving craftsman wants you to have an important place in his eternal edifice So let Him do what He pleases; He loves you, He knows what he is doing, He has had experience. His strokes are skilful and directed by love; not one will miscarry unless your impatience makes it do so. (St. Louis de Montfort) PEOPLE: O Jesus, I beseech you to grant me the grace to be docile to all the inspirations and operations of the Holy Ghost abiding in my soul, so that I may be fashioned according to Your image.

CONCLUDING PRAYER
O Jesus, You are the Way which leads to perfection. Narrow is the way which leads to sanctity, and You are the one Who has traced it. I desire to meditate often on this Way of the Cross, in order to find the strength to go forward always on the right path. O Jesus, I feel that I am still so sinful! That is why I beg that Your Blood and Your mercy might purify me completely. O Jesus, I feel so weak and unstable. I beg Your grace that I might be sustained on this long way of the Christian life. O Mary, be my joy and my consolation. I trust in you. I am your child. Show me that you are my Mother. Saint Louis de Montfort, Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus, direct me, pray for me.
One Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Gloria, at least, should be said for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff. This will fulfil the requirements for a plenary indulgence connected to this devotion so as long as a person also fulfils other requirements. Then, the priest gives the BLESSING. TOGETHER: O most merciful Jesus, * with a contrite heart and penitent spirit, * I bow down in profound humility before Thy divine majesty. * I adore Thee as my supreme Lord and Master; * I believe in Thee, * I hope in Thee, * I love Thee above all things. * I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, * my Supreme and Only Good. * I resolve to amend my life, * and although I am unworthy to obtain mercy, * yet the sight of Thy holy cross, * on which Thou didst die, * inspires me with hope and consolation. * I will, therefore, meditate on Thy sufferings * and visit the stations of Thy Passion * in company with Thy sorrowful Mother and my guardian angel, * with the intention of promoting Thy honour * and saving my soul. PRIEST: Jesus, most innocent, Who neither did nor could commit a sin, was condemned to death, and moreover, to the most ignominious death of the cross. To remain a friend of Caesar, Pilate delivered Him into the hands of His enemies. A fearful crime to condemn Innocence to death, and to offend God in order not to displease men! PEOPLE: O innocent Jesus, having sinned, I am guilty of eternal death, but Thou willingly dost accept the unjust sentence of death, that I might live. For whom, then, shall I henceforth live, if not for Thee, my Lord? Should I desire to please men, I could not be Thy servant. Let me, therefore, rather displease men and all the world, than not please Thee, O Jesus.

PRIEST: When our divine Saviour beheld the cross, He most willingly stretched out His bleeding arms, lovingly embraced it, and tenderly kissed it, and placing it on His bruised shoulders, He, although almost exhausted, joyfully carried it. PEOPLE: O my Jesus, I cannot be Thy friend and follower, if I refuse to carry the cross. O dearly beloved cross! I embrace thee, I kiss thee, I joyfully accept thee from the hands of my God. Far be it from me to glory in anything, save in the cross of my Lord and Redeemer. By it the world shall be crucified to me and I to the world, that I may be Thine forever.

PRIEST: Our dear Saviour, carrying the cross, was so weakened by its heavy weight as to fall exhausted to the ground. Our sins and misdeeds were the heavy burden which oppressed Him: the cross was to Him light and sweet, but our sins were galling and insupportable. PEOPLE: O my Jesus, Thou didst bear my burden and the heavy weight of my sins. Should I, then, not bear in union with Thee, my easy burden of suffering and accept the sweet yoke of Thy commandments? Thy yoke is sweet and Thy burden is light: I therefore willingly accept it. I will take up my cross and follow Thee.

PRIEST: How painful and how sad it must have been for Mary, the sorrowful Mother, to behold her beloved Son, laden with the burden of the cross! What unspeakable pangs her most tender heart experienced! How earnestly did she desire to die in place of Jesus, or at least with Him! Implore this sorrowful Mother that she assist you in the hour of your death. PEOPLE: O Jesus, O Mary, I am the cause of the great and manifold pains which pierce your loving hearts! Oh, that also my heart would feel and experience at least some of your sufferings! O Mother of Sorrows, let me participate in the sufferings which thou and thy Son endured for me, and let me experience thy sorrow, that afflicted with thee, I may enjoy thy assistance in the hour of my death.

PRIEST: Simon of Cyrene was compelled to help Jesus carry His cross, and Jesus accepted his assistance. How willingly would He also permit you to carry the cross: He calls, but you hear Him not; He invites you, but you decline. What a reproach, to bear the cross reluctantly! PEOPLE: O Jesus! Whosoever does not take up his cross and follow Thee is not worthy of Thee. Behold, I join Thee in the way of Thy cross; I will be Thy assistant, following Thy bloody footsteps, that I may come to Thee in eternal life.

PRIEST: Veronica, impelled by devotion and compassion, presents her veil to Jesus to wipe His disfigured face. And Jesus imprints on it His holy countenance: a great recompense for so small a service. What return do you make to your Saviour for His great and manifold benefits? PEOPLE: Most merciful Jesus! What return shall I make for all the benefits Thou hast bestowed upon me? Behold, I consecrate myself entirely to Thy service. I offer and consecrate to Thee my heart: imprint on it Thy sacred image, never again to be effaced by sin.

PRIEST: The suffering Jesus, under the weight of His cross, again falls to the ground; but the cruel executioners do not permit Him to rest a moment. Pushing and striking Him, they urge Him onward. It is the frequent repetition of our sins which oppresses Jesus. Witnessing this, how can I continue to sin? PEOPLE: O Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Offer me Thy helping hand, and aid me, that I may not fall again into my former sins. From this very moment, I will earnestly strive to reform: nevermore will I sin! Thou, O sole support of the weak, by Thy grace, without which I can do nothing, strengthen me to carry out faithfully this my resolution.

PRIEST: These devoted women, moved by compassion, weep over the suffering Saviour. But He turns to them, saying: Weep not for Me, Who am innocent, but weep for yourselves and for your children. Weep thou also, for there is nothing more pleasing to Our Lord and nothing more profitable for thyself, than tears shed from contrition for thy sins. PEOPLE: O Jesus, who shall give to my eyes a torrent of tears, that day and night I may weep for my sins? I beseech Thee, through Thy bitter and bloody tears, to move my heart by Thy divine grace, so that from my eyes tears may flow abundantly, and that I may weep all my days over Thy sufferings, and still more over their cause, my sins.

PRIEST: Jesus, arriving exhausted at the foot of Calvary, falls for the third time to the ground. His love for us, however, is not diminished, not extinguished. What a fearfully oppressive burden our sins must be to cause Jesus to fall so often! Had He, however, not taken them upon Himself, they would have plunged us into the abyss of Hell. PEOPLE: Most merciful Jesus, I return Thee infinite thanks for not permitting me to continue in sin and to fall, as I have so often deserved, into the depths of Hell. Enkindle in me an earnest desire of amendment; let me never again relapse, but vouchsafe me the grace to persevere in penance to the end of my life.

PRIEST: When Our Saviour had arrived on Calvary, He was cruelly despoiled of His garments. How painful this must have been because they adhered to His wounded and torn body, and with them parts of His bloody skin were removed! All the wounds of Jesus are renewed. Jesus was despoiled of His garments that He might die possessed of nothing; how happy will I also die after laying aside my former self with all evil desires and sinful inclinations! PEOPLE: Induce me, O Jesus, to lay aside my former self and to be renewed according to Thy will and desire. I will not spare myself, however painful this should be for me: despoiled of things temporal, of my own will, I desire to die, in order to live for Thee forever.

PRIEST: Jesus, being stripped of His garments, was violently thrown upon the cross and His hands and feet nailed thereto. In such excruciating pains He remained silent, because it pleased His heavenly Father. He suffered patiently, because He suffered for me. How do I act in sufferings and in troubles? How fretful and impatient, how full of complaints I am! PEOPLE: O Jesus, gracious Lamb of God, I renounce forever my impatience. Crucify, O Lord, my flesh and its concupiscences; scourge, scathe, and punish me in this world, do but spare me in the next. I commit my destiny to Thee, resigning myself to Thy holy will: may it be done in all things!

PRIEST: Behold Jesus crucified! Behold His wounds, received for love of you! His whole appearance betokens love: His head is bent to kiss you; His arms are extended to embrace you; His heart is open to receive you. O superabundance of love, Jesus, the Son of God, dies upon the cross, that man may live and be delivered from everlasting death! PEOPLE: O most amiable Jesus! Who will grant me that I may die for Thee! I will at least endeavour to die to the world. How must I regard the world and its vanities, when I behold Thee hanging on the cross, covered with wounds? O Jesus, receive me into Thy wounded heart: I belong entirely to Thee; for Thee alone do I desire to live and to die.

PRIEST: Jesus did not descend from the cross, but remained on it until He died. And when taken down from it, He in death as in life, rested on the bosom of His divine Mother. Persevere in your resolutions of reform and do not part from the cross; He who perseveres to the end shall be saved. PRIEST: O all ye that pass by the way, attend, and see if there be any sorrow like to my sorrow. (Lam. 1:12) The reason that this sorrow is immense as the waters of the sea is certainly the sight of the sufferings and humiliations of her Divine Son. Her Immaculate Heart sees better now, in the presence of Her afflicted Son, how much sin is an outrage to the honour of God. PEOPLE: O Holy Virgin, remember that you are also my Mother, and that it is you who must form in me the soul of a child of God. Speak so well to my heart, which is a chamber of sins and bad thoughts, that I will be overwhelmed and broken with sorrow in realising my offences to God my Father.

The expiation which the Divine Saviour offers is not only contained in the sorrow of His soul, but also in the suffering of His body. Thus, it is necessary that I also do penance. Suffering instructs the human heart; suffering obliges it to reflect and helps it realise the seriousness of sin and detach itself from it. PRIEST: Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:10) The Christian life is a continual combat against the enemy within us which St. John calls the triple concupiscence. If we fall back so often into the same faults and return to the same circumstances, it is because we cease this combat, we allow ourselves to follow the movements of our nature, wounded by Original Sin. How easy it would be for us to be vigilant every day and combative against our predominant fault, and so prove to God that we love Him more than ourselves! But alas, we lack a firm daily intention, and Jesus falls another time, burdened with the thousand faults that we should have been able to easily avoid. How terrible! How sad! PEOPLE: O Jesus, I want to pick myself up, I want to begin again this work every morning. Sustain me.

PRIEST: If in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry? (Lk. 23:31) Green wood is full of sap, supernatural life, but in us there is a lot of dry wood, works that are dead because they are wicked. One day, the dry wood will be cast into the fire of Purgatory or of Hell. Let us fear the just chastisement of God, which will be terrible, for God is not mocked. If the love of God in me does not always suffice for conquering temptations, may at least the fear of punishment help me not to fall back into sin. PEOPLE: O Jesus, fill up my heart with this beneficial fear, so that it will help me keep sin at a distance and live with You without compromise.

(Matt. 5:29) Impurity is the most common sin. In order to be free from it, Our Lord demands of us the generous sacrifice of all occasions of sin, particularly those which involve the senses of sight and touch. To be determined in this regard, we must have a great love for chastity, by which the soul becomes strong, loving, and enlightened. It is the virtue of the martyrs, apostles, saints, and simple and straightforward souls. Without this virtue, the entire edifice of the Christian life is forever placed in danger. PEOPLE: O Jesus, You Who suffered so much in Your body to obtain for us the grace of a total victory of our soul over our body, strengthen me in this struggle, so that I may always be pleasing to You by the purity of my heart.

PRIEST: The whole life of Christ was a cross and a martyrdom, and dost thou seek rest and joy? Thou errest. (Imit. II, 12) What attracted the gaze of Our Lord when He came upon this earth? The Cross! His heart was always longing after it. He wanted to know it under all of its aspects, to be intimately united to it forever, to espouse it. And meanwhile, I, a poor sinner, flee the cross when it presents itself with its accompaniment of sufferings. This is the reason why my life is so mediocre, and why sin continues to reign in it. APPENDIX
HOW TO GAIN THE INDULGENCES ATTACHED TO THE WAY OF THE CROSS To gain a PARTIAL indulgence, a Catholic must simply perform the prescribed work -in this case make the Way of the Cross- in the state of grace and have at least a general intention of gaining indulgences. A partial indulgence can be acquired more than once a day, unless otherwise expressly indicated. To gain a PLENARY indulgence, however, all the following factors must also be present: 1. The person must be a Catholic, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace, that is, free from mortal sin that has not been confessed and forgiven in the Sacrament of Penance. 2. The recipient must go to Confession, receive Holy Communion and say at least one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff. These can all be done several days before or after performing the Way of the Cross. A single Confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences, but sacramental Communion must be received and prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff must be recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence. 3. The recipient must be free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin. Although a person might still sin, yet so long as the attachment to the sin or the desire to commit it is absent from the person's soul, he or she would be considered free from attachment to sin. (If this disposition is in any way less than perfect or if any of the prescribed three conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence will be only partial).

4. Only one plenary indulgence may be gained per day. But one can obtain the plenary indulgence for the moment of death,even if another plenary indulgence had been acquired on the same day. 5. The person must perform the prescribed work; in this case, make the Way of the Cross-with at least the general intention of gaining indulgences. In making the Way of the Cross, the following norms apply: a. The pious exercise must be made before stations of the Way of the Cross legitimately erected. b. For the erection of the Way of the Cross, fourteen crosses are required, to which it is customary to add fourteen pictures or images, which represent the stations of Jerusalem. c. Although according to the more common practice the pious exercise consists of fourteen pious readings to which some vocal prayers are added, yet nothing more is required than a pious meditation on the Passion and Death of the Lord, which need not be a particular consideration of the individual mysteries of the stations. d. A movement from one station to the next is required, but if the pious exercise is made publicly and if it is not possible for all taking part to go in an orderly way from station to station, it suffices if at least the one conducting the exercise goes from station to station, the others remaining in their places. e. Those who are impeded can gain the same indulgence if they spend at least a half hour in pious reading and meditation on the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
