1.0 About Cognizant Academy

Cognizant manages all the training needs through the Cognizant Academy, a Corporate University head-quartered at Chennai. Though the Cognizant Academy started as a training division initially, today Cognizant Academy is fully evolved with five functional areas and has a learning centric environment for all Cognizant associates spread across the globe. During the ISO-9001 & SEI-CMM assessments Cognizant Academy has been acknowledged as one of the primary strengths of Cognizant. In 2007, Cognizant commits to provide 80 hours of training per associate per year across various training programs. The training needs of every associate are identified and mandated as a part of the Associate Learning Plan / Performance Appraisal system. Cognizant Academy aims at providing 4.96 million hours of training in the ELT program and 2.48 million hours of training in Continuous Education Program (CEP). At any point of time the ratio of Full Time Employees of Cognizant Academy to the Total headcount engaged in providing training maintained at 280. (ASTD - American Society for Training & Development recommends 237). Cognizant Academy has some of the best processes in place to monitor and improve the efficiency of all training aspects in a continuous manner. Cognizant Academy has some of the world class process, metrics and measurements in place which include Donald Kirkpatricks four level training evaluation models, Blooms taxonomy, Gagnes Theory etc. Cognizant visions itself to be an enabler of growth of the organization by building a strong workplace learning culture and establishing relevant, standardized and adaptable training processes and systems to its global workforce. Special Training given to resources before start of projects Cognizant facilitates training at various levelsat organizational level to build the required skill base, at project level to fulfill project-specific needs, and at individual level to develop the skills of the individuals. This facilitation exercise involves identifying the training needs, administering the training program, and certifying the skills thus developed on a year-to-year basis. Mandatory training programs: An Associate undergoes mandatory training when joining as a new employee. This could be broadly categorized into three classifications as given below. These training programs are scheduled at the time of these associates joining Cognizant. Entry Level Training Cognizant Academy provides training at the entry level. An eight week intense training for campus recruits, with no experience, is conducted. This facilitates in a gradual transition from a college environment to a corporate environment. The training aims at making the associates fundamentally strong in various technologies. Emphasis is laid on core areas and to build a set of common skills to make them Project Ready

The Academy trained 7500 entry level (fresh recruits with no experience) associates in 2005 and 9613 in 2006, through a comprehensive 8 week program, aimed at facilitating new associates to meet on-the-job expectations. Academy is gearing to train 16000+ trainees in 2007. Lateral Induction Program The lateral induction program is conducted for associates joining Cognizant with prior experience. It is a four day program that familiarizes associates with Cognizants procedures and processes in place. The program includes the following: Joining Formalities Cognitization Induction Process Introduction to Various Verticals Software quality & Processes

This facilitates associates smooth transition in to Cognizant environment and get more comfortable with the workplace.

BPO Boot Camp Cognizant Academy provides four to six weeks of intense training for every entry level recruit in BPO. The focus is on building strong domain knowledge relevant to the process. Emphasis is laid on Domain, Culture and Accent neutralization program apart from process training.

Continuous Education Program Cognizant Academy uses a structured approach in linking learning to individual and organizational performance. Academy strives constantly to develop and to introduce various forms of continuous learning exercises. As a step towards this Cognizant Academy has developed the Associate Learning Plan, a living document which can be maintained by the individual associate, monitored by him, the supervisor and the Academy personnel. This helps Academy to track individual learning needs of all associates in Cognizant and thereby design training programs accordingly. We have identified five core competencies that are necessary to keep our associates abreast with the market and customer expectations and make them more demanding for our customers. They are Technology, Process & Quality, Project Management, Domain and Behavioral Enhancement The organization has decided to offer training on these five core competencies by establishing five schools of Learning Technical School of Learning this includes training on any technology like Java, Mainframes, .Net etc. required for the particular project. Domain School of Learning this includes training on domain related topics like Healthcare, Insurance, and Retail etc. depending upon the vertical the project belongs to. Process & Quality School of Learning training on Prolite, Etracker, Cognizant Quality systems etc are part of this program. Project Management School of Learning this includes training to improve the project management capabilities of associates. School of Behavioral Enhancement addresses soft skills needs of the organization. Core set of programs have been developed based on the competency models for different levels in the organization. Programs include Cross-Cultural adaptability, Communication skills, Self Awareness programs etc.

Professional certification standards The certifications are offered to Cognizant Associates at two levels: Internal, called as Cognizant Certified Professional and External certifications. Internal Certification - Cognizant Certified Professional (CCP): Cognizant Certified Professional is an internal certification program offered in the areas of technical/domain/professional. The Internal Certification system (CCP) aims to promote the concentrated development of organizational specific competencies within optimum duration and effort. The system is used to identify competency gaps, facilitate work force planning, and devices a method for systematic assessment of competency and procedures for formal declaration of competency. Total of 11952 internal certifications have been awarded in the year 2006. External Certification: Cognizant Academy facilitates associates to acquire external certification in the

domain/professional/technical areas.

Academy encourages associates to enroll for such

programs, facilitate and orient associates for getting certified in the chosen area of interests. The input to external certification is driven by business needs and the requirement spelt out by certifying bodies. The Cognizant Academy facilitates its associates to obtain domain external certifications offered by LOMA (for Life Insurance), AICPCU (for Property & Casualty), HIAA and AHM (for Healthcare) and APICS (for Manufacturing & Logistics). Academy facilitates the technical certification offered by different technology companies such as Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Siebel, IBM, SAS, and Rational Software. Cognizant Academy also facilitates the PMP certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Process & Quality Certifications like CISA, CSQA, CIISA etc. In 2006, 4833 certifications have been awarded to our associates in the domain, technical, process & quality and project management areas. Higher Education Distance Education facilitates associates in acquiring academic qualifications like MS, PGDBA and Ph.D., programs offered by elite academic institutions from India through distance learning schemes. Cognizant Academy through its tie-up with BITS Pilani offers the Associates the following formal Masters Degree programs: M.S. (Software Engineering; 4 Semester) M.S. (Software Engineering; 8 Semester)

The academy has an ongoing relationship with Symbiosis Center for Distance Learning to offer Corporate PGDBA course. Physical & Technical Infrastructure The Cognizant Academy main office at Chennai is a state-of-art 100,000 sq ft. facility that can provide training to 1500 associates at the same time. The training needs of associates at Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and United States facilities of Cognizant is also catered through the Cognizant Academy offices at the respective locations. A total of 94 classrooms with world-class infrastructure, spread across locations, cater to all the training activities of associates. Each classroom has 24 machines, making the maximum capacity of training rooms (with PCs) to 2256 (24 Machines X 94 Classrooms). Academy also hires more than 50 classrooms every month to conduct various training programs. We also have state-of-the art technical infrastructure which includes Virtual classroom it supports our Onsite operations. We have 175 user licenses of Centra Infra Virtual Classroom set-up for both US & Europe. Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle (an Open Source tool) On-line Assessment engine for Certification Programs iKnow (Media : wikipedia) for Collaborative Learning myAcademy portal a one stop portal for all learning requirements Academy Dashboard Assignment Automation Tool Real time Interactive Onsite Learning A Satellite based Learning Model

As much as improvising in ways of imparting knowledge, Cognizant Academy also attaches a great deal of importance in measuring learning. Cognizant Academy has some of the best processes in place to monitor and improve the efficiency of all training aspects in a continuous manner. It has some of the world class process, metrics and measurements in place which include Donald Kirkpatricks four level training evaluation model, Blooms taxonomy, Gagnes Theory etc. Cognizant visions itself to be an enabler of growth of the organization by building a strong workplace learning culture and establishing relevant, standardized and adaptable training processes and systems to its global workforce.
