How to Find God’s Will

1. Search God about the matter.

Matt. 7:7- "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door
will be opened to you."
- There is an "asking, seeking and knocking" level." Each one is deeper than the other and
requires more discipline, and obedience.

2. Honestly admit and understand the condition of your "heart."

Prov. 4:23- "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life."
Prov. 16:9- " In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps."
Prov. 21:2- "All a man's ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs the heart."
Prov. 27:19- " As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man."
- The heart is something that God delights in. He does care for the "desires of our heart"
( Ps. 37:4). However, if our desires are not His, and we are not "guarding it"; it is not
pleasing to Him. He does not give us what we always want, even though we "plan our
course," He will decide if it is His will or not. He knows our motives and will "weight it
all" and let us know His will. We must be willing to admit our true desires and intentions
and be willing to do His will above our own! Finally, the choice is ours…

3. Be willing to accept His will is better than yours!

Matthew 7:11-“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask
him!”
Matthew 26:39-“Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed,
"My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you
will."
Ephesians 5:17-“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.”
Colossians 4:12-“Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends
greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the
will of God, mature and fully assured.”
- Many times we have fears about what God’s will is because (whether we want to admit
it or not), we think that are plans are safer. We must be willing to trust that our Heavenly
Father has the best in mind for us! We must choose to submit to His will and “stand firm
in it.”

3. Get confirmation (through the Word, Spirit and people who are your elders) (like
parents, leaders, etc...).
Prov. 15:22- "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed."
Col. 3:20-"Children, obey your parents in everything for this pleases the Lord" (and
Eph. 6:1).
- God will not have you do something that is against your parents. A parent’s heart will be
molded according to His will! We have to trust that He is able to do that!
4. To have peace that passes all understanding.
Phil. 4:6-7- Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God that surpasses
all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
-This could mean that you may not emotionally like it, but it does mean that you have
peace that is inward despite how you may feel. Feelings can be very deceptive.

5. Act in faith and obedience.

1 John 4:18-“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has
to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”
1 Thessalonians 5:8-“But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting
on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”
1 Timothy 4:12-“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
1 Timothy 6:12-“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which
you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many
witnesses.”
1 Peter 1:14-“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you
lived in ignorance.”
Matthew 16:24-“Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
- In order to follow the Lord, we must walk in faith that He is guiding us in every aspect
of our life. We have to submit our fears to Him, because He loves us. If we have any fear
in us; than we are not completely trusting Him. We have to pray through our fears until
we are “made perfect in His love.” We must be an example for others to follow as well.
Sometimes, the Lord will call us to “lay down” something very precious to us, in order to
“carry our cross” for His kingdom. We must be willing to do this and get rid of any “evil
desires” that would keep us from following Him fully and wholeheartedly. Whatever it
means for us to follow Him, we must do it!
