A Newsletter of the Town of Sturgeon Bay Lakeshore Area Fall 2011: Volume 11, no.

From Pat Nell, LFP Corp President

LFP Corporation has had an exciting summer. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Liz and Joe Wallner to obtain group rates for propane from Ferrelgas, our membership is up to 68 members. Welcome to all members, both new and long time. Enjoy our newsletter, which we are mailing only to members and new arrivals on the road. You can also read it on the road blog: lakeforestparkroad.blogspot.com. We had several successful potlucks over the summer, the most recent at the Johnston's. These potlucks are easy to host and a great place to meet your neighbors. No ones dwelling is really too small: guests bring the food and beverages of their choice and no one seems to move more than 5-6 feet away from where they are placed. Everyone pitches in and all the host has to provide is paper goods. (By the way, I have two serving spoons and a small spreading knife from the May pot luck if you are missing yours.) The membership committee is creating a list of those who would be interested in hosting future potlucks. Bill Sauve has been instrumental in the fight against the invasive plant Phragmites along the LFPR shoreline (see the article on page 3). I, for one, am happy to put talk about Phragmites to rest, but I do miss the working groups and the lunches we shared working the past three years on this invasive. Perhaps next fall, we will be rejuvenated enough to tackle the equally intrusive honeysuckle and buckthorn. Remember cutting down invasives does not get rid of them; the stumps and roots must be treated with an herbicide. The Corp will provide Rodeo (see the article on page 3). Liz Wallner and Ruth Sandor are working on an update to the road directory. Please send any them any new contact informationemail address, phone number(s), or

mailing address. Also, if a house near you changes hands, please invite your new neighbors to join our association so that they can receive this newsletter. The updated directory will be ready for the 2012 business meeting and for all members with paid dues. One of the winter projects is updating the sign at the corner of LFPR and TT. The structure is sound, but it needs paint and the correct name. Please send recommendations regarding the sign to pat.nell@itol.com. Anyone with artistic talent who would be interested in painting the correct name should email or call me at 743-5774. Last but not least, plan to attend two upcoming social events: the Fall Gathering on Saturday, October 15 and the Mid-Winter Dinner on Saturday, January 21.

Fall Gathering: Saturday, October 15

The Fall Gathering of the LFP Corp will be held in the second-floor board room at Stone Harbor Resort on Saturday October 15 Coffee starts at 9:30 followed by brunch at 10:00. Our guest speaker, Ann Jinkins of the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society, will talk on the history of the area. Cost for the brunch is $15.00 per person. RSVP to Peg OHarrow, 746-1453 or moharrow@charter.net.

Mid-Winter Dinner: Saturday, January 21

Every year on the third or fourth Saturday in January, residents gather at the Nightingale Supper Club for a casual evening. In 2012, the date is January 21, with cocktails at 5:30 PM and dinner at 6:30. All are welcome; if the weather is conducive to travel many seasonal owners drive up. To reserve a spot, call Jo Ann Zirtzlaff at 7460331 or Lois Wendhack at 743-9761. Let Jo Ann know if you would like to be on the annual mail/call reminder list.

COMBATING INVASIVES: AN UPDATE

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to Remove Phragmites
From Marne Kaeske Stewardship Coordinator, The Ridges Sanctuary DCIST Coordinator (Education and Outreach)

Ongoing LFPR Efforts against Invasive Plants

Want to fight invasive plants on your own? Lake
Forest Park Road has a communal supply of the aquatic herbicide, Rodeo. It is purchased in a 2 gallon concentrate and can be mixed up in the appropriate dilution for residents to use to treat invasives on their property. Buckthorn and exotic honeysuckle are two examples of woody invasives that can be treated any time of the year, including winter. Contact Peg OHarrow, 3108 LFPR, 920-746-1453 or moharrow @charter.net, if you need herbicide.

A big THANKS to all LFPR land owners who have supported the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Phragmites and Lyme grass removal project. Participating land owners on LFPR will have the invasive plant Phragmites removed from their propertiesat no costby contractors this fall. This opportunity comes from a grant provided by the stimulus package administered through the EPA Natural Heritage Inventory, which determined Conservation Opportunity Areas (COAs). Written by the Wisconsin DNRs staff for Endangered Resources, the grant provides funds to preserve biodiversity as well as threatened and rare species on the shorelines of the greater Lake Michigan basin. The project covers six counties and runs through the end of 2013. Heidi Springborn, a conservation biologist, is heading the project, and is doing a great job covering the vast area, communicating among everyone involved, and providing coordination. In Door County, grant funds are being used to protect areas of high biodiversity by controlling the growth and spread of Phragmites. It is public enemy #1 in the Door, growing in a clone formation and often creating an extensive monoculture in just a few years. With 300 miles of shoreline and low water levels over the past 10-15 years, this invasive species is establishing itself on the lakeshore bed at alarming rates. Your neighbor, Bill Sauve (3062 LFPR), has been phenomenal in his leadership, skill, time, and effort in making work on Phragmites on the LFPR shoreline happen! We expect work to start later this month (September). The Door County Invasive Species Team (DCIST) wants to encourage good stewardship from the landowners. Watch out for Phragmites and curb it while it is small and sparse! If you dont know the plants that exist along your beach, give us a call at The Ridges (920-839-2802) and we will help you learn them.

Want to fight invasive plants with your neighbors?

LFPR has a tradition of community effort working on large stands of invasives. Let an officer know if you need help on your property. In the meantime, volunteers will continue to focus on public areas. Last fall, we cleared a large stand of woody invasives at the Cherokee beach access. See the blog entry for September 2010 Community Day at Cherokee Beach 9.20.10" (Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.).
