CNN NAMES BIG RAPIDS NATIVE IN TOP 10 HEROES OF THE YEAR

From Staff Reports YONKERS, N.Y. Big Rapids native Amy (Conrad) Stokes has been named one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes for 2011. CNN released on Thursday its fthannual list of everyday people who are changing the world. CNN viewers nominate the heroes, and then the public votes for Hero of the Year from the top 10 candidates. The winner receives a $250,000 grant and international attention for his or her cause. Stokes, a 1984 graduate of Big Rapids High School, made the list for founding Innite Family, a video mentoring network that pairs adults around the world with children in South Africa, many of whom live in poverty and have lost their parents to HIV or AIDS. Through Innite Family, adult mentors receive training that prepares them to spend at least half an hour each week talking faceto-face via web cam with a child in Africa. The idea to start nurturing relationships that will prepare the children to become contributing members of their communities. Innite Family is based in Yonkers, N.Y., where Stokes and her family now live. Stokes and the other top nine 2011 CNN Heroes received a $50,000 grant for their cause and will be featured in a special program, CNN Heroes: an All-Star Tribute, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 11. To vote for Stokes as Hero of the Year, visit www.CNNHeroes.com. Voters register by e-mail address or cell phone number and can cast votes up to 10 times each day through Dec. 7. For more information on Innite Family, visit www.innitefamily.org.

Stability: Stability should be your number-one concern when taking a long road trip. Many people stick pillows behind their backs for lumbar support, but the main goal is to always have your spine straight. Sit with the seat fully contacting your back; allow the structure of the seat to do its job in supporting your spine. Body Positioning: Maintain proper posture by not leaning one way or the other in the seat. According to the National Highway and Trafc Safety Authority, a drivers hands should both be placed on the outside of the steering wheel on opposite sides. Long recommends the 9 and 3 hand position. Having proper position in the car is also relative to the pedals -- if youre too close youre cramped. If youre too far away, youll end up slouching down to reach them. Sit close enough to the wheel so theres a slight bend at your elbows and keep your arms relaxed. Take Frequent Pit Stops: For longer-distance road adventures, take frequent pit stops in order to stretch your legs and improve the blood ow in your body. To prevent a sore lower back experienced after driving, focus on core stability and strength exercises. Long suggests planks, leg lifts and crunches on an exercise ball to strengthen your core. To nd more information about Long, check out www.porsche.com/ usa.

about all the driving they will be doing during the fall? You cant teen-proof your neighborhood, but you can talk to your teen about safe driving before they head to school. Teens Drive Smart, a teen driver safety initiative from Bridgestone Americas, the parent company to Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC, which owns and operates Firestone Complete Auto Care, has tips and resources for parents to help start a conversation with their teens about smart driving. Visit www. TeensDriveSmart.com for more information. Remember, not only can taking these small steps keep your vehicle running newer, longer, but they can also help keep you and your family safe on the road.

A MEDICAL WARNING FOR VIDEO GAMERS

(NewsUSA) - Video gamers who participate in marathon sessions may be putting their health at risk.

BIG RAPIDS FIRST SUICIDE PREVENTION WALK SET FOR SATURDAY

From Staff Reports

In May 2011, a 20-year-old video gamer from England died when a blood clot formed in his leg and moved to his lungs. The man often remained in the same position playing video games for 12 hours straight.

BIG RAPIDS After her son committed suicide in March 2010, Michelle Lewis wanted to do something to harness the communitys support and help prevent other families from experiencing the pain that she has. Lewis, from Stanwood, is one of the organizers behind Big Rapids rst Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk, which will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Northend Riverside Park. Having raised $1,700 so far for the event, Lewis said she hopes to reach $5,000 total to benet the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Across the country, more than 200 communities host their own Out of the Darkness walks every year. The walk is to raise awareness and money for educational materials in schools and research, Lewis said. More than 100 people are expected to join the walk, which will follow a one-and-a-half mile route along the Riverwalk. Those who donate at least $150 will receive a free T-shirt from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Bernies Place will provide a free breakfast for participants before the walk, and lunch will be served after as well. Participants also can enter a rafe to win prizes. The death of Lewis son, Gordon Dolley, is a big motivator behind the event. Dolley was 15 and a freshman at Morley Stanwood High School where he was bullied by students before his death. Since Dolleys suicide, the school formed an AntiBullying Committee to help address the issue of bully prevention. Theres hope. Theres always a bigger picture, and thats why we started this to help other families so they dont have to go through

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR FALL

(NewsUSA) - In many parts of the country, the leaves have started to fall, and parents have sent their children back to school. Before the weather takes a turn, Firestone Complete Auto Care would like to offer the following car maintenance tips to get vehicles ready for the damp, cold road ahead. Take your vehicle for a full check up. As the fall weather rolls in, its important to have the following items checked by a professional: battery cables and terminals, belts and hoses, air lters, windshield wipers and all uids, including anti-freeze, oil, brake uid, power steering uid, automatic transmission uid and windshield washer uid. Take a good look at your tires. Are there signs of uneven tread wear? That could indicate under-ination, unbalanced tires or misaligned wheels. Remember to check your tire pressure with a gauge at least once a month and regularly inspect the tread depth. Your tread will be even more important during the autumn months when wet, dead leaves cover the roadways. Take care of your lights and turn signals. Fall, along with less favorable weather, also means its time to turn the clocks back for daylight savings. With a shorter day comes a longer night, so be sure your headlights, taillights and turn signals are in proper working order and shining at the appropriate levels. Talk to your teenager. Have a teenager in the house? Worried

Movement is essential for proper blood ow, said Anil Hingorani, MD, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Sitting in the same position for long periods of time -- whether playing video games or cramped in a car or on an airplane -- can result in pooling of the blood in the veins. Blood clots known as deep vein thromboses (DVT) can form.

The 2011 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics reveal that 300,000 to 600,000 Americans die each year from blood clots in the lungs. In 2003, 39-year-old NBC News reporter David Bloom died when a blood clot in his leg traveled to his lungs. The clot formed after weeks of driving around Baghdad in a cramped military tank.

PLANNING FOR COMFORT DURING LONG ROAD TRIPS

(NewsUSA) - Road trips can provide a great source of tunes, good conversation and relaxation throughout any travel season. However, long hours on the road can often result in body aches, poor nutrition and other challenges for drivers stuck behind the wheel. To avoid such pitfalls and make the experience a bit less taxing on the body, champion Porsche race car driver Patrick Long has developed a set of guidelines for drivers everywhere. Long, an American Le Mans Series race car driver who can be in his car for up to 12 hours at a time, recommends these tips for any kind of distance driving: Fuel-Up: If you pack a small cooler with water bottles and healthy snacks like fruits and veggies, this can deter the temptation to reach for non-healthy items on the road.

Stand up and stretch, advises Dr. Hingorani. Walk around. Raise and lower your heels and toes. Tighten and release your leg muscles. This will help promote blood ow.

DVTs usually occur in persons who are sick and have had long hospital stays. The risk factors for DVTs include the following: * obesity * a history of heart attacks * strokes * congestive heart failure * inammatory bowel disease

Women who are pregnant, nursing or taking birth control pills are also at increased risk for DVTs. Half of DVT patients do not experience the warning signs, which include: * swelling

forgetful and listless. If untreated, the condition leads to hard-to-treat headaches, severe depression and poor performance at work or school. The long-term consequences of untreated sleep apnea are signicant as well. The sleeping condition may cause or worsen heart disease, heart arrhythmias, heart failure, high blood pressure and strokes. Furthermore, research shows a connection between shift work and sleep apnea. Shift work is the opposite of a nine-to-ve schedule, often consisting of late-night or early-morning hours. Since shift work interrupts an already-damaged sleep cycle, it only compounds existing apnea side effects. The number of apneic episodes per night can increase signicantly, and sleep-deprivation symptoms will only worsen. Its estimated that up to one-third of shift workers experience side effects severe enough to diagnose them with shift work disorder. Due to their interrupted sleep schedule, shift work disorder causes sufferers to struggle to stay awake, and to fall asleep. Imbalanced biological clocks prevent workers from falling asleep when they actually have time, and they also disrupt digestive systems. These added complications make shift work and

sleep apnea the Molotov cocktail of sleep deprivation. For more information on obstructive sleep apnea or shift work disorder, visit www.sleepapnea.org. ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH IS GROWING POSSIBILITIES (NewsUSA) - Through research labs and clinical trials across the country, adult stem cells are emerging to offer a variety of medical solutions. While some applaud the shift away from embryonic stem cells, others are still uncertain about the real applicability of adult stem cell research. Despite the array of misconceptions and caution surrounding regenerative medicine as a whole, shocking and promising discoveries are being made about cell therapies. One such discovery is the ability to extract adult stem cells from body fat, cryogenically preserve them in a stem cell bank to capture your current cell age and use them for personal treatment later in life. This technology, offered exclusively by American CryoStem, was developed in response to the increasing applications of adult stem cells globally. The Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine is growing entire organs in petri dishes using a patients own stem cells. Wake Forest doctor Anthony Atala has

engineered ears, ngers and even pulsing, functional blood vessels.

* skin that turns blue or red

Ultrasound tests can detect blood clots. Treatment options typically use anticoagulant medication.

Another technique that we use is to grow patients cells and place them on 3D biodegradable molds to create entire complex organs. After eight weeks of incubation and growth, the new organ can be transplanted, explains Atala.

For additional information about DVTs or other vascular health conditions, visit www.VascularWeb. org. OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA WILL RUIN YOUR NIGHT

In Colorado, a leading spine surgeon successfully performed a lumbar disc procedure using adult stem cells to reverse the disc degeneration and regrow disc cartilage. HONORING THE RED FLANNEL FESTIVAL GRAND MARSHALS!
Each year, the Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors solicits nominations from the entire community for the prestigious title of Grand Marshal of the Red Flannel Festival. These exemplary Cedar Springs citizens are chosen based on their commitment and volunteerism to the community, as well as their volunteerism and support of the Red Flannel Festival. This truly is one of the highest honors bestowed in our community, said Curt Tackmann, Red Flannel Board Secretary. Each year, we are overwhelmed by the number of nominations and are excited to present this award to these most deserving candidates. The Grand Marshal presides over the entire Festival, attending several key events and presiding over the Grand Parade. Congratulations to the 2011 Grand Marshal, Gary Gust.

Red Flannel Festival NAMES

GARY GUST 2011 GRAND MARSHAL

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors proudly named Cedar Springs resident Gary Gust as the 2011 Grand Marshal for the 72nd Annual Celebration, to be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011. The Festival is extremely proud and thankful for the many years of Garys outstanding dedication to the entire Cedar Springs community, said Michele Tracy-Andres, President of the Festival. His fabulous community service in several organizations, and strong support of the Festival are very impressive and just what we look for in a Red Flannel Grand Marshal. Its very obvious Gary loves Cedar Springs and the Red Flannel Festival! Gary has been a prominent leader in the community, volunteering his time to several organizations in youth sports and helped found the Athletic Boosters in 1981, as well as being the rst President of the Boosters. Gary has supported the Festival for many years, including participating in numerous 5K Run events! We have always enjoyed Red Flannel Day, but this year will be extra special, said Gust. Gust attended Cedar Springs High School, and went on to Ferris State University, where he played tennis and met his wife, Lolly. Gary owned Gust Construction Company from 1979 until 2009. Today, he and Lolly enjoy their four grandchildren, harness horse racing and traveling around the world hunting. Previous Red Flannel Festival Grand Marshals:
