Saturday 1st October

Welcome back !
The Club resumed full training sessions after the summer break at the start of August and it was really good to see high levels of attendance at a time when many swimmers were still on summer holidays a good sign of the health of the Club. The Haddington 100s swim meet was held at Prestonpans on Sunday 11th September and I wish to say many thanks to everyone who helped make it such a successful and enjoyable day. This is a busy time for the Club committee with the preparation for forthcoming Club AGM on Wednesday 28th September at 7.00 pm at the Aubigny Sports Centre. Please make a note of this date and come along to learn about and support the Club. There will be coach reports, financial reports & plans for the Club as well as a preview of next year's French exchange, provisional dates July 15th to 27th, 2012. There will also be the appointment of new members of the committee, for which we have some nominations. Nominations are still sought for Vice President, Gala Convenor, Trophies Co-ordinator and Child Protection Officer. Your Club is run by volunteers and Haddington is very lucky to have many parents of swimmers who get involved and older swimmers who also play a part. The roles that are undertaken by our volunteers include coaching, lifeguarding, officiating, timekeeping, squad administration, fundraising as well as various committee jobs. In order to ensure that the burden does not fall too heavily on the faithful few, we expect that one parent for every swimmer in the club will volunteer to take part in some way. The Club helps children become the best swimmers that they can be, in a culture of fairness where confidence is built and individual progress is celebrated. Sound stuff straight from the website. Where do they learn all this during training but critically also at competitions our own in-house competitions and other competitions which are all run by club volunteers. We are a competitive club and proud to be so, whilst also welcoming those who just wish to develop their swimming and fitness. Did you know? Total competitions competitions)

You can see from the figures that if only a few parents attend competitions as officials a lot will fall to that faithful few. The number is not sustainable, we need a bigger complement of officials to be able to cover our share of all the competitions in which we participate. We are desperately in need of more parents to sign up not just for timekeeping (a 2 hour course on a Wednesday evening) but also for timekeepers to progress on to becoming judges. You can come onto poolside during competitions and share words of encouragement with the children whilst helping with the marshalling, timekeeping, judging or generally providing assistance. Courses are not onerous and we will be pleased to put on additional courses in the coming months. If you would like to volunteer please sign up by putting your name on the sheet on the board or by letting the gala convenor (Francis Ogilvy) or any other committee member know.

Yvonne Earle Liaison ELST

*****Breaking News***** The club has managed to arrange an extra hour of pool time on a Wednesday evening so please take note of the changes to squad session times below. These will take effect from Wednesday 19th October 2011. 6.00pm to 6.50pm 6.50pm to 7.40pm 7.40pm 8.30pm 8.30pm to 9.30pm Squad 1 (Novice squad) swimming; Squad 2 group B land training Squad 2 group B swimming; Squad 2 group A swimming Squad 3 swimming Squad 2 group A land training

We will let all swimmers in squad 2 know which group they will be in over the next couple of weeks. The reason for this change is that the middle session has become overcrowded and both the land training and the swimming sessions do not allow for enough individual attention or feedback. Although the swim sessions will be very slightly shorter both the swimming and the land training should be more effective. The change will also prevent a potential blockage in moving swimmers up from squad 1. Please note that the training sessions on Friday stay the same as at present.
