About This Document

HUAWEI WASN9770 Packet Service Gateway Operation Guide

This describes how to start, configure, log in to, and log out of the local maintenance terminal (LMT) of the WASN9770. 3 Managing the Authority of the WASN9770 The WASN9770 offers a wide rage of operation and maintenance commands. The commands are categorized into different command groups in terms of functions and influence on the device, which facilitates the management. Meanwhile, the users are divided into groups with different authorities. The command groups are specific to different users. This is to facilitate the operation and management and improve the system security. 4 Managing the System of the WASN9770 This describes how to manage the system of the WASN9770. The overall management of the system of the WASN9770 is often used to guarantee the normal running of the WASN9770. 5 Managing the WASN9770 The local maintenance terminal (LMT) offers two ways to manage the WASN9770, that is, graphic user interface (GUI) and man-machine language (MML). You can perform the maintenance operations such as querying the board information and resetting the board through the GUI in a clear way. All the operation and maintenance commands can be executed through the MML. 6 Managing Alarms of the WASN9770 This function is used to detect the hardware or software fault during the running of the WASN9770. The information concerning the detected fault is displayed. The information is transferred to the alarm box through the convert management system. Then, the alarm box sends the visual and audible signals to inform the maintenance personnel of the fault. 7 Managing the Monitoring of the WASN9770 The monitoring management is used in daily maintenance. You can monitor the CPU usage of the WASN9770 by monitoring the CPU usages of the boards, which is significant for performance analysis. 8 Managing the Message Tracing of the WASN9770 The tracing function is used in daily maintenance. You can locate the fault in the service flow by tracing the message. After the data is configured, you can enable the tracing function to verify whether the signaling links are normal, and then locate the fault. 9 Using Performance Browser Tool of the LMT of the WASN9770 The performance measurement results of the network element (NE) can be retained for a period (at least three days) when sent to the M2000. The operator can browse the performance measurement results of the NE through the performance browser tool.

3.1 Basic Concepts

This describes the basic concepts of the office, user type, user name, and password regarding the authority management. 3.1.1 User Types The local maintenance terminal (LMT) allows only two types of users to log in to the network element (NE), that is, domain users and local users. 3.1.2 Operator Authority This describes the authorities of operators. To ensure that multiple operators with different authorities can operate the WASN9770 in a secure and convenient way, authority management is required. 3.1.3 User Names and Passwords This describes user names and passwords. To prevent illegal users from operating the system, user names and passwords must be set for the system. 3.1.4 Operation Time Limit The admin user, administrator, and custom user with related authority can enable that the operator can operate the local maintenance terminal (LMT) only within a certain period. This period is called time limit. 3.1.5 Command Groups A command group is a set of commands. The commands are categorized into command groups, and then the command groups are assigned to users with different authorities. In this case, the authority of the operator can be managed. One command can belong to different command groups.

3.1.1 User Types

The local maintenance terminal (LMT) allows only two types of users to log in to the network element (NE), that is, domain users and local users. The local users are managed by the NE; however, the domain users are managed by network management system (NMS) and can log in to the NE. Table 3-1 lists the difference. Table 3-1 Difference between the domain user and the local user Operation Target Information such as user login and authentication Adding, modifying, deleting, or querying the user Domain User Saved in the M2000. 3.1.2 Operator Authority

This describes the authorities of operators. To ensure that multiple operators with different authorities can operate the WASN9770 in a secure and convenient way, authority management is required. The operator authority contains five levels, that is, guest, user, operator, administrator, and custom user. Table 3-2 Operator authority levels Authority Level Guest User Operator Administrat or Custom Data Query System Maintenance Data Configuration Administratio n

When a user name is added, the authority for adding any combination of command groups is available.

The commands for the guest, user, operator, and administrator are predefined in the system and cannot be modified. The symbol indicates the available authority. The data query command, system maintenance command, data configuration command, and operator management command correspond to the authorities mentioned in the preceding table. The authority of the custom user is defined by determining the command groups that can be used by the custom user. The name of the command group and the commands in the command group can be set based on the actual needs. Thus, the authority of the operator can be set in a flexible way. The custom user can add the authorities such as management, data query, system maintenance, and data configuration.

Context
l

The operation logs record all the information regarding the operation on the WASN9770 through the LMT. You can query and dump the operation logs. The security logs record all the events regarding login, authentication, and management.

The operation log includes the information such as the operator name, operator ID, IP address of the computer where the LMT is installed, executed commands, date, time, and results. Each operation log file is generated every day and saved in hd:/bam/data/olg on the hard disk of the SRU. You can query the operation log. A maximum of 64 latest records can be displayed. If the query records outnumber the threshold, narrow down the querying conditions. Create a folder of which the name is slg in the directory bam/data. The security log is saved in hd:/bam/data/slg. Similar to the operation log file, each security log file is generated every day. The security log file is named after the date. The extension name is slg. For example, the security log file on Aug 15, 2007 is named 20070815.slg. The security log is basically the same as that of the operation log in terms of items including but not limited to the following:
l

By default, a maximum of 350 files can be saved in the directory of the security log. This value can be set in the bam.ini file. By default, the size of the security log is 100 MB that can be set in the bam.ini file. If the number of the security log files saved in the directory exceeds the threshold, or the security log files in the directory are oversize, ALM-0083 File catalog capacity over threshold occurs. The security logs between the active and standby SRUs can be backed up in real-time or in batches. The security log file, as part of the data file, can be uploaded, downloaded, backed up, or recovered.

The WASN9770 adopts distributed processing structure. The LPU/SPU and the SRU retain the same duplicate of the forward information base (FIB) table (also called routing table). In general, the FIB table of the SRU sends entries regularly to the LPU/SPU, and then the LPU/SPU refreshes the FIB table. This guarantees that the FIB entries of the LPU/SPU are consistent with those of the SRU. If some FIB entries of the LPU/SPU do not exist in the FIB table of the SRU, those entries are deleted through aging mechanism. Checking the consistency of the routing table (also called routing aging) can guarantee that the FIB table of the LPU/SPU is consistent with that of the SRU. Users can determine when the route is aged. In addition, this function guarantees that the FIB table and the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) table of the LPU/SPU are consistent with the duplicate of the SRU.

4.5 Managing the NTP

This describes how to manage the Network Time Protocol (NTP) that is used to issue precise time over the network. 4.5.1 Introduction to NTP The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize the time between the network elements (NEs) and the time server. 4.5.2 Querying Basic Configurations of the NTP This describes how to query the status of all Network Time Protocol (NTP) sessions, status of the NTP service, and the connection between the network element (NE) and the specified NTP server. 4.5.3 Managing the NTP Server If the remote Network Time Protocol (NTP) server is set as the local time server and the local device serves as a client, only the local client can synchronize with the remote NTP server. The remote NTP server does not synchronize with the local client.

4.5.1 Introduction to NTP

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize the time between the network elements (NEs) and the time server. The NTP is used to synchronize all the devices with clocks so that the time of all the devices is basically the same. If the NTP server is not configured, the preciseness of the system time of the NEs cannot be guaranteed and the distributed applications cannot be conducted. One NE can be configured with 128 NTP servers. In general, one to three NTP servers are configured. The NEs can automatically synchronize with the most precise NTP server. If the identity authentication is selected when you configure the NTP server, the same key No. and the key value must be configured between the NE and the NTP server. The identity authentication is used to authenticate the identity and encrypt the data.

5.4.2 Using TRACERT

This describes how to test the gateways passed through by the packet from the host to the destination address. The TRACERT command is used to check whether the network connection is normal and analyze where the fault occurs in the network.

Prerequisite
The local maintenance terminal (LMT) is started and the user logs in to the WASN9770.

Context
The TRACERT process is described as follows: The source first sends a packet with TTL as 1, so hop 1 sends back an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) error message to specify that the packet is not sent (TTL times out), and then the packet is resent with TTL as 2. Likewise, hop 2 returns TTL timeout. This process continues until the packet reaches the destination. The process is to record the source address of each ICMP TTL timeout message to provide the routes that an IP packet adopts to reach to the destination. The execution results include the following:
l

If the response packet is not received within a specified period, Executing command timed out is displayed. If the response packet is received with a specified period, the information displayed includes the serial number of each hop, IP address, and response time. If the packet cannot reach the next hop before the timeout (For example, the maximum number of the hops is set), the serial number of this hop and the character * are displayed.

Procedure
Run TRACERT to test the gateways through which the data packet passes from the host to the destination address.
NOTE

It is recommended to enter the TTL value before using this command. This is to avoid timeout in the case of unreachable network. If the timeout occurs, users cannot browse the required information.

----End

Example
This following describes how to check whether the device is accessible. In this example, the IP address of the device is 10.70.12.40. The maximum number of hops is three. The printouts show that the test cannot continue when the packet reaches the third hop.
TRACERT: MTTL=3, HOSTN="10.70.12.40"; RETCODE = 0 Execution succeeded traceroute to 10.70.12.40(10.70.12.40) 3 hops max, 40 bytes packet 1 10.110.218.1 3 ms 3 ms 3 ms 2 10.110.254.137 3 ms 4 ms 6 ms 3 * * * --END

6.1 Related Concepts

This describes the concepts of the alarm type, alarm severity level, alarm time, and alarm box concerning the alarm management. 6.1.1 Alarm Types The alarms contain event alarms and fault alarms (active alarms and cleared alarms). 6.1.2 Alarm Severity Levels The alarm severity level is used to identify how serious the alarm is. The alarm severity level can be critical, major, minor, and warning. 6.1.3 Categories of Alarm Events The event alarms can be triggered by the following: power system, environment system, signaling system, trunk system, hardware system, software system, running system, communication system, service quality, and processing error. 6.1.4 Alarm Box The WASN9770 uses the universal alarm box of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd (hereinafter referred to as Huawei).

6.1.1 Alarm Types

The alarms contain event alarms and fault alarms (active alarms and cleared alarms).

Fault Alarms and Event Alarms

l

Fault alarms The fault alarm is caused by hardware fault such as board fault. The fault alarm can be cleared after the hardware fault is rectified. In this case, the system reports the cleared alarm notifying that the fault is rectified. Each fault alarm corresponds to one cleared alarm. The severity level of the fault alarm is higher than that of the event alarm.

Event alarms The event alarm is an occasional alarm during the running of the device. It indicates that the system is abnormal at the moment, for example, path congestion. Some event alarms are reported periodically. After the event alarm is cleared, the cleared alarm does not occur.

Active Alarms and Cleared Alarms

The active alarm and the cleared alarm are fault alarms.
l

Active alarms The active alarm refers to the fault alarm that is not cleared. Cleared alarms The fault alarm can be cleared after the hardware fault is rectified. In this case, the system reports the cleared alarm notifying that the fault is rectified.

6.1.2 Alarm Severity Levels

The alarm severity level is used to identify how serious the alarm is. The alarm severity level can be critical, major, minor, and warning.

6 Managing Alarms of the WASN9770

HUAWEI WASN9770 Packet Service Gateway Operation Guide

Table 6-1 lists the definitions of the alarm severity levels and the handling measures. Table 6-1 Definitions of the alarm severity levels and the handling measures Alarm Severity Level Critical Definition The critical alarm indicates that the fault affects the system service. Therefore, you must handle the alarm immediately even though the alarm occurs during nonworking hours. For example, if an alarm occurs regarding the unavailability of the device or the resource, take immediate measures to clear the alarm. The major alarm affects the service quality. You must handle the alarm during working hours, for example, the alarm regarding the degraded service quality or unavailable resources. Otherwise, some important functions cannot be realized. Therefore, take immediate measures to clear the alarm. The minor alarm does not affect the service quality. To avoid severe damage, handle the alarm properly. Remark This alarm must be cleared immediately. Otherwise, the system breaks down.

Major

This alarm must be cleared immediately. Otherwise, some important functions cannot be realized.

Minor

The minor alarm can remind the maintenance personnel of locating the alarm cause and eliminating the hidden troubles.
