Restore Your Home: Restore That Lawn

By Sam Erickson Youve repaired the crown molding. Youve gotten the electric work up to code. Youve made the hardwood floors shine. Whats left? Old homes mean old lawns, and your home wont be fully restored until you fix that old lawn. Old lawns often have the same problems that old houses do. Rarely does a homeowner take better care of the lawn than they do of the home. As you are updating or restoring your home, dont forget about restoring your lawn. The major problem that occurs with old lawns is soil compaction. If your soils are heavy in clay, soil compaction could be a particular problem. If the soil is compacted, the roots in your lawn wont be able to break through the hardened layer and grow deep, which will prevent them from accessing nutrients and water and allow them to dry out more easily. To get rid of that compaction, youll need an aerator, which you can rent from many locations. It will pull soil plugs out of the yard and allow air into the soil. Aerating is the first step, but its not the last. If the lawn is patchy, you will want to reseed it. There are several ways you can go about this. One of the best is with a slit seeder, which will cut small holes into the lawn and drop the lawn seeds into them. For grass to grow from seed, it must have good contact with the soil. Roughing up the soil with a gardening fork or hard rake will also help provide some of that contact. When buying the seed, make sure you get a variety that will thrive in your local climate. If the lawn is too far gone, you may have to resod it. This can be expensive, but it is easy work. Sod is ordered by the square foot, so figure out how much yard you have and head to your local lawn supply store. Lay out the rolls of sod in an interlocking pattern like decking, so water wont run off. Make sure you give the yard a good watering and stay off it for several days after you put down the sod. When your lawn has started, be sure to water it frequently to help the seeds or sod take root. Keep the grass at a reasonable height so it wont choke out the new seeds. There is some hard work to be done to get your lawn in good shape, but it will be rewarding in the end. Once your lawn is established, it will be a pleasure for years to come.

you probably have to take the time to pull out a stepladder to get the job done. If you have more than one hard-to-reach location, you likely have to drag that ladder around the house. Not only is that time consuming, but climbing up and down the ladder can be dangerous. Take that ladder and trade it in for an extension pole. Telescopic poles can be found at most hardware stores and will allow you to reach all of those difficult places while keeping both of your feet firmly planted on the ground. You can also use the pole for painting and other home maintenance tasks. Create a Plan Have you ever walked into a room and forgot which part you cleaned and which you hadnt? If you have, then you know how frustrating it can be to waste time re-cleaning. You can avoid this kind of mishap by creating a cleaning plan in advance. This plan will include not only how to move from room to room but also how to move across a room. It is also helpful to plan ahead for your next cleaning session by ensuring all of your cleaning equipment is in working order and stored in one location. Follow these tips and youll find plenty of free time to use on activities you actually enjoy! Good luck!

From Compost To Kindling

By Tresa Erickson You have spent many a day raking up pine needles and pinecones, but you wouldnt have it any other way. You love your pine trees, despite all of the work they create. While you generally set the pinecones aside to use for composting over time, a friend has suggested you take an

alternative route this year and turn them into kindling for your fireplace. When dried out, pinecones make great starter for fires. You may treat them with various chemicals in order to produce various colored flames. You may use table salt to create yellow flames, salt substitute to create purple flames, and allum to create green flames. You may use strontium chloride

or boric acid to create red flames. To treat pinecones, soak them in half a gallon of hot water with a cup of the chosen chemical for eight hours. Remove them using tongs and let them dry on paper towels for three days. Separate the pinecones by chemical treatment and burn them two to three at a time. Dont burn any more than that or mix chemical treatments. It could cause a dangerous reaction. If chemically treating pinecones does not appeal to you, you could create scented pinecone kindling. To do this, fill a spray bottle with water and 20 drops of cinnamon essential oil. Spray the pinecones and store them in a garbage bag for 24 hours. Remove them and use them as kindling, burning two or three at a time. Put your old pinecones to good use this year. Turn them into kindling for your fireplace and for others. Fill a few baskets with them and give them to your friends as gifts.

we all take part in it from time to time, but the less we do it, the better. To minimize the time engaged in one of your least favorite activities, here are some tips. Read the Instructions Most household cleaners typically have one instruction in common: to let it sit on the applied surface before cleaning. Take that time, usually a few minutes, to work on another task. When you return, youll be amazed at how much more effective the cleaner is and how little effort you have to exert to wipe down the surface. This is especially true in the kitchen where grime can become caked on surfaces and left for hours to harden.

Improve Your Reach Unless you have the reach of gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps, there are probably a few places in your home you cant get to on your own. Whether its the corner of the ceiling, a ceiling fan or light, or the top of a cabinet,

Countersink the screws as well and use dowels made from the same wood as your tread. Sand to complete. If that doesnt sound like it will work for you, you can wedge the tread from above or below. Squeak! Squeak! Your Stairs Need Attention.

By Sam Erickson Whether youre sneaking out for a midnight drive or just downstairs for a midnight snack, the squeaky stair tread can be a demon, giving away your intentions to everyone one in the house. Squeaky stair treads can also be a sign of underlying instability, so in your home restoration projects, dont forget about making safe, stable, quiet stairs. Sometimes stairs squeak because of a settl-

If youve got older stairs, remove the old blocks and replace them with new ones. There are a variety of methods you can use, so take your pick or try them all. Squeaky stairs can be annoying, but they can also be dangerous for anyone with balance problems or other problems walking. Fixing them is fast and easy and requires no specialized knowledge or skills, so check it off your to-do list today.

Go with the one most useful for you. You can simply nail the tread into the runner below. For this, you will need someone to stand on the floor by you. Drill two small pilot holes just over the squeaky spot and use 8d nails to hold the tread down. Dont forget to countersink the nails and fill the wedge underneath the tread with a hammer and use a utility knife to cut off the excess. Reinstall the molding and your stair will be as good as new. If you can get underneath the stairs, you can simply tighten the existing wedges and drive in new wedges where needed. If you do have access to the underside of the stairs, you can install shelf brackets underneath. This will connect the tread with

The first step is to decide what your vision really is. Do you want all period pieces that are precisely faithful to your home or the most modern conveniences? Once youve determined your grand vision, you can determine exactly what you need to do. There will definitely be places along the way where you will have to make changes, but a plan is essential. This will allow you to budget your money, time and materials. You might have to shut off a room or two for some time, like the kitchen or the bathroom, so you will want to

plan ahead and be prepared. To get started with individual projects, make your list and check it twice before heading to the local hardware or home supply store. If you have several projects in mind, think about what you will need for all of those. If you can afford it, you can actually save money by buying in bulk. A notebook with products, prices and availability will serve you well as you move through your project. You can also use this notebook to take down advice you get from experts or sketch out what you are looking for at the store. You may be able to do a series of smaller jobs yourself, but you may have to hire a general contractor for larger jobs. Doing the job yourself can save you money in the long run, but it might lead you to more hassles. Contractors are more able to deal with problems that might be unforeseen. A good contractor can be hard to come by, so be sure to get good references. Heres where your planning, vision and notebook will really come in handy. Youll need these to convey your true vision to someone else. Take notes and write down everything you and the contractor agree to. Knowledge is key to doing a great job of your home restoration. Whether you hire a contractor or do it yourself, you want to maintain your vision and do

your research so you know exactly what you are getting. Make plans beforehand and keep careful notes so you can really enact your vision.

Wooden Wonders!
As a teacher, I use wooden clothespins for many things, including art projects, name markers, big paper clips, etc. If you attach some adhesive magnetic tape to the back, you can let children paint or decorate them in numerous ways. They are excellent for displaying chore lists or art on the refrigerator door. They are our chip clips and clips to close economy-size bags of frozen foods. I have used them to wrap up long extension and Internet cords as well. Best of all, they are reusable! D. Copyright 2011 Dollar Stretcher, Inc.

The Value Of Composting

In the kitchen, I keep a separate bin (with tight lid) to collect vegetable and fruit scraps. Every other day, I take them out for composting. In this way, we have reduced our trash by 75%. We keep trash for curbside pick up to only once a month (which costs $3.25). We save close to $10 per month ($3.25 x 3) by reducing the trash. Also, the compost we make helps our vegetable garden in the spring and summer. The parts of fruits and vegetables that we cannot eat we give back to Mother Earth. A. Please tell your readers to have an emergency plan ready in case they have to quickly evacuate the house, and make sure your kids, even the youngest ones, know it. Im really proud of my wife and kids, who got up with hardly any questions and got out of the house with just their pajamas and slippers on during a cold night. But Im still going over the incident in my head to think of ways to get out safely, or even better, to prevent this situation from happening again. Hopefully my experience can help others. -- James G., Amherst, Mass. DEAR JAMES: Thanks so much for relating your experience! Im glad everyone was OK. This is a way of sounding a wake-up call to readers who havent thought much lately about home safety. Protecting Stone Foundations

By Sam Erickson One of the least-known developments in WWI was concrete. Before then, most homes were built with a stone foundation. If you own an older home or are considering buying one, check out the foundation. If its made of stone, you will have to perform regular maintenance to prevent future problems. Sloping floors and cracked plaster are good signs that there might be problems with your foundation. Even if these visible signs arent present, you should still conduct a close inspection of your foundation. Do a visual inspection of the interior and exterior of your foundation. If you see crumbling or bowing, you know you are in trouble. These will need to be repaired by a quality mason. Foundation issues are not something that the average do-it-yourselfer can handle because they require specialized knowledge and tools. If theres no evidence of this, you can probably handle the repairs and maintenance yourself. A mortar coating on the interior of a foundation is standard. It helps hold the stones in place, serves as a moisture barrier and makes the basement look good. It will flake off over time and

will need to be repointed. If not, the mortar between the stones may fall out and allow the stones to shift. Refill the voids as soon as you see them. You can use prepackaged mortar for the interior, but you will want something softer for the outside mix. If you consistently need to repoint, try doing a complete top coating. The point here is just to keep everything functioning; unless youre a trained mason, you probably wont be able to make it look spectacular.

If you have to have that turn-of-the-century house, studying the foundation and understanding the work that it will require is essential. You will have to do some work, perhaps on a regular basis, but there is nothing in a stone foundation to prevent you from living in a great house.

Safety From Gas Leaks

By Samantha Mazzotta DEAR HAMMER: I wanted to relate a story that your readers might find helpful. Last month, in the middle of the night, I woke up to the very strong smell of gas throughout my house. I immediately got everyone up and told them to get out of the house. All the burner controls on my kitchen stove appeared to be in the off position. I didnt try to turn off the gas at the meter because it is located in my basement and the gas odor was so strong I was worried about an explosion.

Companion Planting
By Leigh Maisenbacher Companion planting has become popular with landscaping aficionados, but you dont have to be a professional to use it. Following are some tips on using companion planting

Repointing demonstrates you have some kind of underlying moisture problem, and you will have to address this sooner or later. The most important thing is to keep the water outside of the house draining away from your foundation. All patios and walkways should slope away from the foundation. Gutters should be maintained so that water can flow properly away. Some people advocate for waterproofing systems, but they can be expensive and costly. If you are consistently repointing in one area, check the exterior of your house in order to assess your problem.

You will definitely need some ground cover, and squash and pumpkin vines work well for this. These types of vines shade the soil beneath taller plants, which helps keep the soil temperature regulated. Another benefit to using squash and pumpkin vines as ground cover is that they serve as a sort of mulch, suppressing weeds. These types of cover crops help fix nitrogen

in the soil, which benefits all plants in the area. Since most animals dont care for them, they can also serve as a repellant for pesky critters. Isnt that great? Corn can be used as a companion plant if you want to include more edible plants in your landscape. Corn is a great companion plant due to its height and sturdiness. It can be used as a trellis for climbing vines such as pole beans. If you dont want tons of vegetables, you can always use tall, sturdy flowers instead of corn to get the same effect. If you have a problem with Japanese beetles in your yard, youll be glad to know that there are some great plants that work well for companion planting as well as for repelling insects. Tansy, white geraniums, rue and four oclocks are all great flowers that will help repel insects. You wont want to repel all insects, however. Bees are definitely needed to help pollinate your landscaping. To ensure your garden will be visited by the little buzzing friends, you should include some plants in your garden that bees like. A few good ones are wild bergamot, clover and lavender. Lavender can also be dried and used inside your home as well. If you find that you are really interested in companion planting, you may want to do some research on the subject. There are many types of plants and vegetables that work great for this. Some, when planted correctly, can even be used in place of pesticides to keep other plants pest free. Get out there, do a little research and plant that pest-free, insecticide-free companion garden today!

Clean As A Whistle
By Tresa Erickson When given the choice to sit in a hard, wooden chair or a soft, cushy upholstered chair, most of us would probably go for the latter. Upholstered pieces in general are more comfortable than wooden pieces. However, as we all well know, keeping upholstery clean requires some effort. Unlike wood, most upholstery cannot be cleaned with the simple swipe of a lint-free cloth.

To keep your upholstered pieces looking their best, it is important you place them out of the path of direct sunlight and vacuum them regularly. This will prevent dirt and dust from embedding in the fibers. Before vacuuming upholstery, check for loose buttons and threads. Clip any loose threads and tighten any loose buttons. Then, using a soft brush attachment and a crevice tool to get into tight corners, vacuum all of the upholstery, being careful to avoid any weak spots. If you have pets, you may need to take extra steps to deal with the pet hair on your upholstery. You have several options for removing pet hair left on your upholstery after vacuuming. You may use a lint brush or a sticky lint roller to collect the loose pet hair. You may also use masking tape. Just wrap some around your palm, sticky side up, and move your taped palm across the

upholstery to pick up all loose pet hair. Spills on upholstery are bound to happen, and it is important that you read the labels on your upholstery and find out how to deal with them. In most cases, you will probably be instructed to blot up what was spilled with a clean white towel. Dont use a colored towel; the dye could bleed onto the upholstery and stain it permanently. Dont rub the spot either; this will only embed the stain into the fibers. From time to time, you may need to deep-clean your upholstery. Again, read the labels on your upholstery and use products designed for it. If you have a suede sofa, select a product designed for suede. Dont use just any product, and bear in mind that some delicate fabrics like silk require professional cleaning. Whatever cleaner you choose, read and follow the manufacturers directions. Dont go overboard and soak the upholstery. Not only will you risk damaging the fibers, but you may have a difficult time removing all of the soap residue from the upholstery. Keep your upholstery in good condition. Find out what care is required and follow through.

a professional step in. To determine whether you need a professional, take a realistic look at your knowledge. An old house can be tricky, and there is a lot of construction history youll want to know before you get started. How much do you know about plumbing from the turn of the century? Can you bring an old electric box up to code? A lot of small successes in home repair and restoration dont add up to an experts knowledge. Every experienced home repairer has gotten knee deep into a job and found some kind of unexpected surprise. Termites in your floorboard? Crumbling foundation wall? Would you know what to do with such a surprise? A professional contractor would. These surprises only multiply with the age and complexity of the house. If its undergone renovation before, you never know what you are going to find behind your walls. If there is anything that a skilled do-it-yourselfer knows, it is that you have to have the right tool for the right job. Unless you are willing to spend a lot of money on professional tools, you might want to hire a contractor. There are places where you can rent

You also have to learn how to use the tools properly, requiring further time. With a contractor, youre paying for their expertise and the use of their expert tools. If you are getting into structural components, you are probably going to want to hire a contractor, or at least consult with one. Doing it yourself is a great idea, if you can handle the project. Making that decision requires an honest assessment of your time, budget and restoration skills. In the end, it may save you time and money to simply hire a professional who you know is going to do the job right. Get good references and sit back and watch someone else work for a change.

Organized Craft Supplies

I use the large clear plastic jars with lids that once contained peanut butter, nuts, candy, etc. in my craft room to organize tools and supplies. They are labeled and lined up neatly in a row on a long narrow

shelf on the wall. These jars are the perfect size for all kinds of supplies, and it is so easy to see what they contain. For example, each of mine contain an assortment of scissors, glue, markers, small paint brushes, beads, buttons, utility knives/ blades, ribbon, thread, etc. Its a great way to recycle, takes up very little room, and costs virtually nothing if you are buying the product in the jar anyway. It also makes an attractive display! Sheila. Copyright 2011 Dollar Stretchers, Inc.

Do It Yourself? Maybe.
By Sam Erickson Theres a great American virtue of self-reliance. Great writers, leaders and orators have talked about the independent American spirit. It makes sense to most people to handle their own home repairs and restoration. It allows you to work on your own schedule, and it sure is a lot cheaper than hiring a professional. There are some jobs that really require a professional, however. Even a skilled homeowner has to move aside from time to time to let

Clean Underfoot
By Tresa Erickson Pick up any cleaning guide and one of the first tips youll come across is to clean a room from top from bottom. Any dust stirred up will fall to the floor, where it will be cleaned up last. Unfortunately, by the time most people get to the floors, they are exhausted, and rather than do any deep cleaning there, they just sweep and mop or vacuum. While sweeping and mopping might pick up most of the dirt from tile, linoleum and hardwoods, the same cannot be said of vacuuming the carpet. The vacuum cleaner may pick up any loose dirt in the carpet, but it will not remove much of the packed-in dirt. For that, you will want to look into deep cleaning the carpet. You can hire a professional to clean your carpet, or you can do it yourself with a steam cleaner. Professional carpet cleaning can be expensive, but it will save you time and labor. For an additional fee, you may be able to have a chemical protectant applied to the carpet to protect it against future stains. Should you decide to tackle the job yourself, you may purchase a carpet cleaner or rent one. The latter will cost less; however, if you intend to clean your carpet regularly, you might want to look into buying your own steam cleaner. Either way, you will need the appropriate cleaning solution.

Maximize Every Inch
By Tresa Erickson Live in a small space and feel like the walls are starting to close in on you with all of your stuff? Purged everything you can during your spring cleaning and still lack storage? No problem. Here are some ways to add storage to your space and make the most of it. Use storage bins and baskets. Boxes break and crumble; storage containers, on the other hand, are sturdy and stackable. Some are even made specifically for items and feature convenient storage cubes. Storage containes not only keep items in good condition but take up far less space. A slim wire caddy will hold your spice packets better and take up less room in the cabinet than a pile of loose packets. Get creative. Look beyond the basics-closets and drawers-for storage space. Slide that extra painting behind the sofa, hang that collection of straw hats in the foyer and slip those remote controls in a basket in the entertainment center. Make storage space. Hang a curtain across that nook for an instant closet. Raise your bed on casters and slide long, narrow containers with out-of-season clothing underneath it. Cover some shoeboxes with fabric and slip your photos inside. Hang items when possible. Purchase a pot rack for your pots and pans. Find a wire shelf for your spices and hang it on the back of a cabinet door. Add some floating shelves in your living room for family photos. Purchase furniture that offers storage options or serves multiple purposes. Replace your ottoman with storage cube ottomans and your TV cart with a small armoire with drawers. Add an old dresser in your dining room to store your linens and serve as a sideboard during parties. These are just some of the ways in which you can create more storage in your small space. Once you have made the best use of the space you have, you can take it a step further and design each area to make it appear larger than it is. Tuck in some mirrors on the walls and in the backs of shelving to reflect more light and create the illusion of more space. Trade dark wall colors for lighter shades, which will make the area seem airier and larger. Rearrange the furniture to create ample flow through the area. Make the space feel as big as possible, and those feelings of being cramped are sure to disappear.

Before you begin cleaning your carpet, you should test it for colorfastness. Grab a white towel, apply some cleaning solution to it and gently press it onto an inconspicuous area of carpet. Remove the towel. If it is clean, you are good to go. If it has traces of the carpet color, the carpet is not colorfast and you should consult a professional. If the test for colorfastness comes out fine, you can start preparing the carpet for cleaning. Remove as much furniture from it as possible and place small pieces of plastic underneath the legs of the pieces that remain. Then vacuum the carpet and pretreat any stains, following the manufacturers instructions on the cleaning solution. When ready to use the carpet cleaner, read the manufacturers instructions, insert the cleaning solution and turn on the machine. Move slowly over the carpet, using long strokes. Try not to stay in any one area too long. You dont want to saturate the carpet fibers with cleaning solution. When you have finished, wipe any cleaning solution from furniture legs and turn on a fan. This will provide for better ventilation and speed up the drying time. Stay off the carpet until it has completely dried. Thats all there is to it. In just a few hours, you can have freshly cleaned carpet. To keep it looking its best, vacuum it regularly and clean up spills as soon as they occur. Never rub spills. You could damage the carpet fibers and set in the stain permanently. Apply some spot cleaner to a spill, blot it with a clean white towel, rinse it with water and blot it until dry. For spills involving solids, scrape up as much as possible if moist or break it up if dry and then clean it using the blotting method.

Hardwood flooring makes as a great backdrop for a traditional American room and adds an air of authenticity. Most homes built during colonial times featured wide-planked oak or pine floors. However, for comfort and warmth, you may prefer to stick to carpet. Furnishings for traditional Americana rooms need not be formal. In fact, simple, unpretentious pieces Place them around the room and show off your national pride. Creating an Americana room is not hard, and once you do it, you may want to take the style farther and incorporate it into other rooms in your home. Just remember, you dont have to stick to the traditional patriotic room. You can move into new territory and

Americana At Its Best

By Tresa Erickson You like to shop at flea markets, and as you walk through the booths on weekends, you find yourself drawn to objects that reflect a sense of patriotism. Sometimes, its something small like a red, white and blue pot, while at other times its something large like an old flag. You love all things Americana and would like to decorate one of the rooms in your home in that style.

your landscape more pet friendly and have your dog to take less of a toll on it. You can start by taking your dog out and studying how they use the yard. Where do they play? Where do they run? Where do they dig? Where do they eliminate? If your yard is packed with plants and your dog has little room to romp and play, then you may need to rethink your landscape. All dogs require areas away from prime landscaping to play, run and most importantly, dig. These can be separate or combined. You could remove many of the plants from the center of your yard, for example, to give your dog room to romp and play and allocate an area off to the side for digging. Whatever areas you set up, keep in mind that your dog will require some training to use them on a regular basis. Your dog will also need an area to eliminate. This should consist of shredded wood or gravel. Again, you will need to train your dog to use the area, and to reduce the risk of it eliminating around single trees or bushes, you may want to plant foliage around them. Finally, you need to create an area between your yard and your back door where your dog can wipe its paws and an area where they can lie down. As noted earlier, you will have to train your dog to use these areas.

Americana style is extremely versatile. The traditional theme is patriotic in nature and incorporates the colors of red, white and blue. Other themes may reflect a time in American life like the 1950s or a particular location like the New Jersey seaboard and feature colors relating to that. If you are going for a traditional Americana feel, you will want to select a color palette based on red, white and blue. These can be the actual tones used on the American flag or more subdued tones like maroon, are often preferred because they reflect the dcor of homes during the birth of the nation. Whitewashed pieces work well as do homespun pieces. Antiques of the time like a spinning wheel or old chair often add a touch of fancy. With the paint, flooring and furnishings in place, its time to start loading the room with accessories. Heres where all of your flea market finds will come in handy. Remember that pot and flag you bought? Bring them in and all of the pieces of Americana you have stashed around your home.

Back In Style
By Tresa Erickson Are you interested in replacing some of the flooring in your home with a hip, environmentally friendly product? Then linoleum flooring may be for you. Linoleum? Yes, that product that you used to see in schools, hospitals and other commercial settings has made a comeback and is now available in a wide array of colors and designs for the home. Created by Frederick Walton in the 1860s, linoleum is made entirely of natural products. Melted tree resin is mix-ed with boiled linseed oil and heated and cooled alternately to form linoleum cement. The cement is then combined with wood flour, cork dust, ground limestone and color pigments, heated and applied onto a jute backing. Although it is all-natural, linoleum is often confused with the synthetic product, vinyl. It is by no means anything like vinyl, however. While colored patterns are printed on the surface of vinyl, the colors of linoleum are layered throughout it and become more pronounced with age. Linoleum is also less susceptible to heat and will not show burn marks like vinyl will. There are many other benefits of linoleum. Because it is made of all-natural materials, linoleum is one of the greenest flooring products available. It is protected by a factory-applied sealer coat and can be used on countertops and backsplashes in addition to floors. Linoleum is allergy-free, water-resistant and easy on the feet. It repels dust, and costing just $3 to $4 a square foot installed, it is less expensive than most ceramic tile or wood flooring. Linoleum is also very durable, lasting 30 to 40 years in some settings. Although linoleum offers many advantages, it does have its drawbacks. As tile, it can be installed fairly easily by most do-it-yourselfers. However, the tiles are prone to curling and warping. Linoleum sheets are better, but the installation of these is best left up to professional. Because linoleum is so porous, it requires the application of two coats of acrylic sealer upon installation and one coat every year thereafter. Upon installation, linoleum may have a yellow cast and a pronounced scent, which can bother some people. Fortunately, the yellow cast will disappear over time as the linoleum is exposed to natural or artificial light, as will the scent of the linseed oil. Linoleum is like any other flooring product. You must consider the pros and cons of it carefully before installing it in your home. Once it is put into place, it will last a long time and will not be easy to remove, so make certain you want linoleum in your home.

Books, Books Everywhere

By Tresa Erickson Own a lot of books? Got them stashed here and there on a few shelves around the house? Gather them all together and use them as accessories in your dcor. Books can be displayed in small groups around the room or on bookshelves. Many people prefer the latter. However, small stacks of books work really well on tables to raise the height of lamps and other accessories. Opened to a favorite page, they also make for an interesting addition to buffets, desks, cabinets and more. If you prefer to use bookshelves, keep in mind that there is an art to displaying books on shelves. Although neat, row upon row of books lined together make for a bland shelf and do nothing to add to the dcor of a room. Old, warped bookshelves with sagging shelves do not make for a pretty sight, so before you do anything, make sure your bookshelves are in good condition. Get rid of any that have seen better days or repair and paint them. If you need to buy new bookshelves, look for strong, sturdy ones with adjustable shelves that wont sag under the weight of heavy books. When placing your books on shelves, you have a number of choices for organizing them. You can group them by genre, topic or author and alphabetize them by title, which will make them a snap to locate. If you are using the books purely as accessories, you can organize them by size or color for a really unique display. With books that you use a lot, make sure you place them on lower shelves for easier access. Bookshelves need breathing room, so be creative in your arrangements. Line them up in some areas and stack them in others. Use vases and other unique objects for bookends and insert accessories among books to create interest. Strive for balance in a wall of bookshelves and consider inserting some sort of display unit in the middle to break up the monotony. Books make great accessories. Dont overlook that fact when decorating your home, and keep in mind that if you dont have enough books to use as accessories, you can always purchase some fairly expensively at secondhand stores, yard sales and flea markets

Individuals should start by looking at the pieces they want to hang as a single design element. This element should suit the shape and size of the wall and any furniture placed on the wall. Tall, narrow walls call for long, narrow artwork arrangements. Large, expansive walls call for large artwork arrangements. All artwork arrangements should be about two-thirds or three-fourths the length of any furniture pieces beneath it. When hanging artwork, individuals should work with the pieces on the floor or paper first. They should arrange and rearrange pieces until they come up with a design they like. They can then start hanging the pieces on the wall. For this, they can either take measurements and transfer them to the wall or create templates of the artwork and hang them on the wall with painters tape. For those who are hesitant, the latter method often works better. Using artwork templates allows individuals to tinker with the placement until everything is just right. Then all they need to do is measure where the hanger or wire is on the actual artwork, transfer it to the template, sink in a nail, tear away the template and hang the piece. Of course, with odd-shaped pieces, templates may be hard to create and individuals will have to rely on their measuring skills. For the most part, though, using templates makes for fewer errors and holes in the wall to fill and paint. Hanging artwork right the first time requires a bit of effort. Be prepared to put in the time and you will end up with pleasing results.

A Green Choice
By Tresa Erickson Do you like the velvety finish you see on many of the old painted pieces you come across in flea markets and antique malls? Have you tried to recreate it, using lime wash and other techniques, but werent satisfied with the results? If so, then you might be happy to learn than milk paint has made a comeback and is now available in a wide range of colors. Created by the ancient Egyptians, milk paint has been used in some form or another for centuries. The original formula consisted of milk, earth pigments and lime. Over time, the composition of milk paint evolved, with oils, waxes, eggs and other substances added. This resulted in some milk paints that were more durable than others. During the Renaissance, an oil-based milk paint was created. Some liked it, while others preferred the old water-based milk paint. With the development of latex paint in the 1930s, the use of milk paint faded. It resurfaced again in the 1970s with the start of Earth Day and the need to be more environmentally conscious. Today, with the emphasis on going green, milk paint is more popular than ever. It generally comes in powdered form to which water is added. The application of it is fairly easy. To apply milk paint to an unfinished piece, you simply need to sand the surface and apply stain or paint as desired. When that is dry, you may apply the milk paint. Make sure you brush it on in even strokes. Let it dry and then sand the surface lightly. Continue adding coats of milk paint until you are satisfied with the look, making sure you sand lightly between each. For a distressed look, sand the edges of the piece to the original stain or paint color. Apply a coat of sealer to the piece, let it dry and then apply a coat of paste wax, being sure to rub with the grain. Buff the piece, and you are done. Milk paint has been around for quite some time. Give the old favorite a try. You just might create the velvety finish you long for.

The Right Care

By Tresa Erickson Take a look at the furnishings around your home. See a lot of different materials, dont you? Your dining room set might consist of an oak table with cane-back chairs, while the side tables in your living room are made of bamboo. In all likelihood, you probably have some materials other than wood in your furnishings, some of which may require more specialized care than others. Here is a brief list of some common materials used in home furnishings and suggestions for caring for them. Bamboo To clean bamboo, all you need to do is vacuum it and wipe it down with a soft, damp cloth. Be gentle with dark pieces. You dont want to ruin their aged patina. Cane To clean cane, all you need to do is wipe it down with a soft, dry cloth. While you are cleaning cane, you should check for loose corners and tack them down. If you discover more severe damage, you should consult the help of a professional. Chrome To clean chrome, all you need to do is wipe it down with a soft, lint-free cloth and some glass cleaner. Should you discover rust on the chrome while cleaning it, treat it with a metal polish made specifically for chrome. Rattan To clean rattan, all you need to do is take it outside, spray it down with a hose and wipe it with a soft cloth. Then blot up all of the excess moisture with a clean cloth and move the piece to a shaded area to finish drying out completely. Rush To clean rush, all you need to do is vacuum it to remove all loose dirt and dust and brush it with a soft, wide brush. For sticky spots, you may use a damp cloth. Do not, however, soak the rush with water. You will damage it. Wicker To clean wicker, all you need to do is vacuum it to remove all loose dirt and dust. If needed, you may also take your wicker furniture outside, spray it down with a hose and scrub it with a brush and soapy water. As with rattan, you should wipe up all excess moisture from the piece and allow it to dry thoroughly in a shaded area. These are just some of the materials that may make up many of the furnishings in your home. If you have pieces that consist of more than wood, make sure you know how to clean and care for them properly to ensure their longevity.

Toilet's Antics Drive Wife Mad

By Samantha Mazzotta Q: The toilet in our master bedroom, for no reason I can explain, will randomly start running for a few minutes and then stop again. Of course, it is accompanied each time by a faint hissing sound as the water flows into the tank and then a "clunk" when it stops. At night, this is incredibly annoying. My wife wants it fixed ASAP. Is this something that can be fixed quickly, or do I need to call a plumber? -Hoyt C., Vero Beach, Fla. A: There's a good chance you can fix this yourself. What's happening is that water is silently trickling from the upper tank into the toilet bowl. When the water level of the tank drops to a certain point (below the range of the float ball or indicator), the inlet valve at the bottom of the tank opens up and the tank refills. Once the water level rises and returns the float ball or indicator to its top position, the valve closes and the water stops. Often you'll hear a "clunk" or chain rattle as this happens. To verify a slow leak, mark the water level at its highest point (right after it finishes refilling from a flush) with a crayon, then close the inlet valve under the tank. Come back in a half hour to an hour to see if the water level has fallen. Next, try to locate the cause of the leak. If there's no water on the floor (indicating bad seals or a cracked tank -a definite contact-the-plumber sign) then the flapper valve - the big valve in the center of the tank that dumps water into the bowl with each flush -- is the likely culprit. The problem could be as simple as a misaligned flapper valve. This is most commonly caused by a lift chain or lift arm that is too long or too short. (The lift chain or arm literally lifts the flapper valve up when you push the flush handle -- try it now and see.) Adjust the chain by placing the connecting hook (the hook that attaches the chain to the upper lift arm) into a different rung of the chain. Adjust a vertical lift arm by either slightly bending or straightening the arm. If the adjustment doesn't work, consider the age of the flush assembly. The seals may be breaking down, especially in a hard-water environment. Replacement assemblies can be purchased at your local homeimprovement store (be sure to bring the toilet's brand and model number with you to get the correct fit). HOME TIP: Increase the life of your toilet tank seals and flush assembly by avoiding the use of bleach-based, intank cleanser tablets. wool and apply a paste wax. This will get the finish imperfections out without hurting the wood. A much tougher problem is grease and oil stains. First, get as much of the material up as possible with clean towels. Use dry cleaning fluid to draw the stains out. You will need to check for progress in the area every few minutes. Mold and mildew on your floors can be taken care of with a bleach-soaked rag. You can use ice cubes in a plastic bag to get sticky wax or chewing gum off the floor. Simply scrape it off when it has frozen. Wood floors get dirty. There are some simple steps you can take using general household cleaners to brighten up your wood floors and really make them shine. If you have nice, new wood floors, it is important to keep them clean. That way, you wont ever have need of any of this knowledge.

By Sam Erickson Wood floors are beautiful and lustrous and bring an old world charm to a home. They also hold light and really shine in the sunlight-unless they are stained, molded or mildewed. An important element in many home restorations, getting your wood floors to shine is often a matter of cleaning rather than refinishing. Different kinds of stains require different procedures; here is a guide for some of the most common problems. In order to keep your floors in order, you need some materials. Steel wool pads of the finest grade will let you scour the floor. You will also need a supply of mineral spirits and a petroleum distillate, along with a floor sealer, solventbased floor wax and simple household vinegar. If you have dark spots on the floor, rub the area with your steel wool pad and mineral spirits. Take a wet rag, dip it into household vinegar, apply it to the stain and allow it to sit for a few minutes. This will lighten the stain. If the stain persists, you can apply a mix of half water and half bleach. This will take care of most household stains. Bleach will do to your floors exactly what it does to your clothes, so be careful not to let it run onto other parts of your floor and clean it off quickly when you are done. You can use a lower concentration if you are worried about creating other stains. Watermarks are a whole different story. These are usually a stain in the finish that doesnt carry all the way down to the wood. Start the application again with steel

Wasted Electricity
It seems there are so many accessories at my computer like printers, radios, lights, etc. and all were sucking phantom energy because I left them plugged in. Finally, I corralled all plugs with pipe cleaners and mounted two surge protecting power strips to a leg of my desk table. Now with a flip of a switch, I turn the strips off. I also labeled all the cords, so I know what cord goes to what gadget. I placed two labels. One was placed close to the power strip and another label was placed midway on the cord. I got the power strips on sale for $3 each, which was a clearance price. I had procrastinated a long time before undertaking this chore, but its well worth the effort as I expect my total power bill to go down as I continue placing power strips throughout my home. S. and will show many imperfections like nicks and dents. High gloss. This reflects the most light of all sheens and works well in high-traffic areas where surfaces are non-porous and require cleaning. The mirror-like, highgloss finish is the easiest to clean. However, it will accent every imperfection on trim, cabinets, banisters, doorframes, windowsills and frames, and more. Now that you know more about the paint sheens, you can select the right one for your needs. Dont forget, the more imperfections in the wall, the more visible they will be with higher sheens of paint, so in cases like these, stick to lower sheens of paint.

Bathtub Refinishing Best Left to Pros

By Samantha Mazzotta Q: Ive got an old claw-foot tub that looks shabby but is pretty sound that Id like to install in the bathroom Im remodeling. Id like to refinish it, but am not sure what materials to use or how long it would take. What do you recommend? -- Jim H., Philadelphia A: You do have two options: the do-it-yourself refinish or a professional refinish. I may once have espoused the idea that you should tackle a tub refinishing job yourself, but over time have found that I prefer to spend my energies on other aspects of a bathroom remodel and not on trying to restore tubs and sinks. With the do-it-yourself option theres the investment in the right equipment and materials to do the job, and numerous hours are required to get it done. The tub needs to be scrubbed beyond clean and the surface prepped for the refinishing medium. Then the finish needs to be applied properly to avoid streaking or later cracking or peeling. All of this takes time and care, and youve got to work in a very well-ventilated area -- and still wear a protective filter mask, particularly when working with refinishing materials. Even with all that, the refinish may go poorly and after hours of work you have a less-than-ideal-looking tub. With a claw-foot tub, which can add beauty and value to a bathroom, you want to really make it look good and last a long time. This is where professional refinishing comes in. One of the bonuses of hiring a pro to do the refinish job is that this is a pretty competitive service in most areas, with several companies vying for your business. So you can get multiple quotes before making the decision to either have a professional handle the refinish, or attempt the job yourself. HOME TIP: Always get a written estimate from a professional before agreeing to start any refinishing work. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Patching Your Old Ceiling

By Sam Erickson Tongue-and-groove ceilings are all the rage these days. Usually, these appear in older homes built around the turn of the century. You might have discovered one underneath an old ceiling when you were doing other restoration work, or you might have put one up yourself. Either way, you will need to keep them in good condition. If there are boards that have dried out over the years, they may have opened up cracks in the ceiling, which can allow heat to escape and dust from the attic to trickle down. It will be hard to completely get rid of the cracks without ripping the boards down and putting up completely new boards. However, you may be able to caulk the smaller gaps. Caulk can be problematic. If you have a dusty ceiling, it wont adhere well. Caulk can also shrink over time, leaving you with the same problem. You can mask larger gaps by inserting plywood strips into your ceiling from the attic. Once youve got the ceiling looking good, youll want to make it work better for you. This means creating an effective air barrier between the house and the attic. A vapor barrier on the warm side will keep air and water out. Look through your attic thoroughly and check for places where air might get into the ceiling and plug those up. The chimney, framing and plumbing and electrical chasms are good places to look. Using a polyurethane foam to stop up those gaps will help prevent air leakage. Watch out for electrical wires, recessed lighting and other gaps. When youve taken care of all of the little gaps, you are

ready for insulation. Fiberglass insulation is a great way to go, but many people are choosing blown-in insulation these days. It can get inside of those gaps and really raise the insulation value of your home. Blown-in insulation should really be done by trained professionals, but you can unroll fiberglass insulation yourself. Be sure to follow your local energy codes. If you need more information on insulation, check at your local library or on the Internet. Tongue-and-groove ceilings are a thing of beauty, and they can really set your restored home apart while giving you that period feel. They require a little more time and effort to maintain, but you dont have to go through a costly renovation project to make them work for you.

Sheen Selection
By Tresa Erickson If you know anything at all about paint, then you are familiar with the term sheen. It refers to how much light the painted surface will reflect. The duller the sheen, the less light it will reflect. Paint reflects light according to the resin contained within it. Generally the more resin there is, the higher the sheen and the smoother and more durable the finish will be. Paint comes in five basic sheens: Flat or matte. This reflects very little light and works well in low-traffic areas with irregularities or blemishes on the ceilings and walls. The surface diffuses light, disguising imperfections, and is easy to touch up. It is not so easy to clean, however. Eggshell. This reflects light slightly and works well for decorative and faux finishes in areas that receive some traffic. It has just enough sheen to grip glaze while allowing it to flow over the surface with ease. Eggshell paint is more resistant to dirt than flat and can be washed, making it ideal for aluminum and vinyl siding. Satin. This reflects light somewhat and works well for trim and in high-traffic areas susceptible to moisture. Satin paint is often considered the most versatile of all sheens because it is easy to clean and doesnt reveal as many imperfections. Semi gloss. This reflects more light than satin and works well for trim and in heavy-traffic areas that require frequent cleaning, like bathrooms and kitchens. Semigloss paint reflects more light than other sheens, however,

Mix It Up
By Tresa Erickson Take a look around your home. See a lot of solids, patterns or an equal mix of both? If the majority of what you see is solids, then you either really like solids or you doubt your ability to mix patterns and avoid using them. If the latter describes you, dont despair. With a little knowhow, you can use more patterns in your dcor and mix them up with good results.

and work well for people who cant or dont want to try mixing patterns themselves. If youre up to it, though, you can mix and match patterns yourself. To do this, you should limit yourself to three or four patterns and select a dominant pattern based on some major element in the room, like the carpeting, wallpaper or paint color. After you have selected a dominant pattern, you should study it carefully. Is it

dominant pattern but vary in type, scale and texture. If your dominant pattern is a hard, large-scale checked fabric, then you should focus on softer mediumand small-scale fabrics in something other than checks. While you could use two checks, you dont want to go beyond that or you will end up with a busy room. The one feature that should run through all of your patterns and make them a cohesive unit is color. They should all feature one, if not many, of the same colors. You probably dont want to combine green checks with bright purple polka dots and black toile. Not only will they clash in color, but they will clash in style. The checks might be more suited to country dcor than the other two. Be wary of using patterns all in the same exact color. A pale green room with pale green striped drapes and bedspread and a pale green damask chair might be a little much. Once you have selected all of your patterns, make sure you distribute them throughout the room. Dont pile them together in a corner of the room. The area will look busy and overwhelm the eye. Make sure you incorporate some solids into your dcor as well to give the eye a place to rest. Coordinating patterns is not that difficult. It just takes some thought and effort. Remember to limit your selections to three or four and make sure they are similar in color and style but vary in type, scale and texture.

All Set For Winter

By Tresa Erickson The end of the season will be here before you know it. Youve got a lot to do to prepare your lawn and garden for winter. In addition to dealing with all of your plants, you have to put away your pots and planters. Here are some tips for getting those in order. Winter can wreak havoc on pots and planters. Protect yours by bringing in any that could be damaged by the cold and storing them in a dry, warm place. To prepare your pots and planters for storage, empty

them first and dispose of the old soil. Do not dump it in your garden or save it for next year. Not only will the old soil be compacted, but it may contain toxic salts from fertilizing and watering over the season and harmful organisms, weeds and insect eggs. Scrub all pots and planters with a firm bristled brush and warm, soapy water. Add a few drops of bleach to another bucket of water and scrub your pots and planters again. This will sanitize them. Rinse them with a hose and let dry. For additional protection, treat all metal and wooden planters with a coat of nontoxic paint, stain or sealer. You probably have some permanent outdoor garden planters as well. To prepare these for winter, reinforce the joints with rustproof nails and treat the exterior with a fresh coat of non-toxic paint, stain or sealer. Place the planters on

supports for better drainage and add some fresh mulch on top of the soil. Follow these tips, and with any luck, your pots and planters will weather the cold and stay intact. When spring finally rolls around, you can get everything out of storage and start planting. Just make sure you keep an eye on your growing plants and repot them as needed to prevent them from splitting and damaging any of your pots and planters.

Now Heres A Tip
