I have retained a copy of this assessment task.

For the purpose of checking that students have not exceeded the word limit of an assignment, students are expected to use 12 point Times New Roman, 1.5 spacing with a 2cm border around the page. Each page will be considered to be 500 words. Work beyond the word limit will not contribute to the final mark. A 10% reduction will apply if this sheet is not attached to your assignment.

Acids and Bases

2011 Science Research Assignment- Year 9 First Hand Investigation

A first hand investigation for year 9 Task: Your task has two parts: Part A Research
You are to research the concepts of acids, bases and indicators. Your research should answer the following questions: What are acids, bases, alkalis and indicators? What are their properties? Where are they found in nature? What are some natural substances which can be used as indicators? You should also research one major use for an acid in industry and one major use for an alkali in industry.

Part B. Scientific Report

You are to produce one or more chemical indicators from natural sources and use these

indicators to test a variety of chemicals from around your home.

The first indicator, which everyone will use, must be extracted from the leaves of the red cabbage. If other indicators are used they can be extracted from various natural materials such as flowers and vegetables. Finding out which ones to use will form part of the research component. You should test at least twelve (12) different chemicals from your kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Using substances of known pH (listed below) you will investigate the indicator colours at different pH's. These substances are your controls. Substance water lemon juice vinegar detergent Approximate pH 7 2/3 5 10 Type of substance neutral acid acid alkali

You will then determine the approximate pH's of the various household chemicals and then classify them as acids, bases/alkalis or neutral.

Report Structure

Title Aim

: title should clearly state what your report is about : One sentence explaining what you are going to do
First Hand Investigation

2011 Science Research Assignment- Year 9

Hypothesis Materials

: One sentence stating what you think the results will show : A complete list of the materials and substances used in this

investigation Risk Assessment : Complete a table like the one below: RISKS PREVENTION

Methods :series of steps outlining how you did the experiment. Method A outlines how you extracted the red cabbage indicator. Method B outlines how you extracted the other indicator. Method C outlines how you tested the household chemicals. Include the steps involved in using the controls.

If you used the same method for other indicators you don't need to repeat the method. You will also include a table similar to the one below showing the independent, dependent and controlled variables:
Independent variable (change) Dependent variable (Measure) Controlled variables

Results and Observations:This section contains all of your data and observations. This should be displayed using tables and/or graphs. You also need to draw a coloured pH chart/s for the red cabbage indicator and also for any other indicators used.
Describe what you found out from your investigation. Is there any relationship between the results and the uses of the chemicals (which were tested)? Explain why. Were there any parts of your method, or any equipment which you used, which could have affected the accuracy of your results? Outline the changes you would make to improve the accuracy of this experiment.

Discussion of Results: include the following:

Conclusion:A sentence answering the aim of the investigation and the hypothesis you wrote. Bibliography:Use at least three (3) sources from two forms of media (books, internet, magazines,CD-roms). These should be referenced correctly as shown in your college diary page 15.
