Product Range Jet Fans


For short road tunnels, where the natural ventilation is not sufficient, a pure longitudinal tunnel ventilation is used. With this kind of tunnel ventilation the supply of fresh air is realized by jet fans. The pure longitudinal tunnel ventilation is increasingly being used for longer tunnels, too. Jet fans are axial fans with free inlet and outlet section. They are mounted on the ceiling or on the side directly in the cross-section of the tunnel. Jet fans suck in a small amount of the tunnel air and blow it back into the cross-section of the tunnel with a high kinetic energy. In this process an impulse exchange takes place between the propulsion jet and the air column of the tunnel, and this air column is set in motion in the direction of flow. Important qualities are efficiency, aerodynamics, sound and corrosion protection of such systems.

Characteristics of a Longitudinal Ventilation


Depending on the traffic conditions, the natural ventilation of road tunnels, can be supported, increased, decreased or stabilized by using jet fans. The jet fans create a defined longitudinal speed of the air column in the tube. This speed must be individually adjusted to the respective circumstances (tunnel crosssection, traffic volume, etc.), in order to adhere to the respective effective pollution limits. The disadvantage of a pure longitudinal ventilation is that the pollutant concentration (Ks) linearly increases along the tunnel tube towards the end of the tunnel, because no exchange takes place between polluted tunnel air and fresh air along the length of the tunnel (TL). Therefore, at the end of the tunnel the concentration is the highest (see fig. 1 longitudinal ventilation).

For the system of a semi-transversal ventilation (central ventilation stations) jet fans can be used, in order to control the flow of smoke in the case of fire. Thus, for example, a too high flow relocity resulting from thermal current or undesirable direction of flow can be influenced in such a way, that a possible escape route remains free from smoke to a great extent.

For city tunnels, the extraction of polluted air is mostly realized with large axial flow fans at the exit gate, in order to distribute the highly polluted air via an exhaust air duct into the atmosphere, maintaining the immission at the gate within the permissible limits. (see fig. 2 longitudinal ventilation with exhaust system).

For longer tunnels with longitudinal ventilation mostly a longitudinal ventilation in sections (intermediate) is used. There the tunnel length is subdivided into several sections. At the end of each section the polluted tunnel air is extracted through divided ducts by means of axial flow fans and at the same time fresh air is blown into the next section. (see fig. 3 longitudinal ventilation in sections).

In addition to the delivery, assembly and commissioning of tunnel fans we also offer complete support during the planning and design for road and railway tunnels as well as for subway ventilation. As turn-key supplier of complete systems, we develop individually optimized solutions for control and monitoring of tunnel fans, including the measuring instruments required.

TLT-Turbo GmbH has developed its own program for the design of longitudinally ventilated tunnels, on the basis of international guidelines such as PIARC, RVS and RABT. Based on this and knowing the key features, we can carry out a complete aerodynamic calculation of the tunnel.

Fire test jet fans: The suitability of the TURBO LUFTTECHNIK jet fans in case of fire at 250C for an operating time of at least 90 minutes was proved during a large-scale test at the independent testing institute of DMT at Dortmund.

Technical Description
Jet fans By the term jet fan a unit is understood, which represents the machine ready for operation after installation into the section reserved for traffic and connection to the electric power supply, and which is used for supplying fresh air by means of exchange of impulses between propulsion jet and remaining quantity of air. Fan housing (1). The fan housing consists of three screwed ducts, made of welded sheet steel. As protection against corrosion the housing is galvanized (min. 50 m) and provided with a powder coating (100 m 20 m). The joining elements between the housing elements and the silencers consist of high quality stainless-steel.

Impeller with blades (2 + 3) The impeller is an aluminium alloy casting with blades individually adjustable during standstill. The impeller is completely closed and is therefore optimally protected against corrosion, particularly against crevice corrosion. For high demands with regard to corrosion, e.g. seawater air, the impeller rotor is also powder coated.

Nose and tail fairings (4 + 5) In front of the impeller there is an aerodynamically designed, non-rotating nose fairing. For unidirectional fans a rotating fairing is used. Nose and tail fairing are provided with the same corrosion protection as the fan housing. On the downstream side of the motor an aerodynamically designed, corrosion protected tail fairing is arranged. Drive motor (7) Three phase current asynchronous squirrelcage motors are used as drive motors for the jet fans. The motors are suitable for direct start-up. The housings are made of cast iron with cooling ribs. Cooling is made through the air stream of the jet fans. The antifriction bearings of the motor bearings are sealed for life. The motor corresponds to the insulation class H with heating in accordance with B and the protection class IP55.

Suspension (6) The jet fans are suspended with a support frame. The fans are fixed with heavy-duty support anchors.

Motor support (8) The motor is fixed in the fan housing by means of sufficiently dimensioned supporting struts. The supporting struts also serve as downstream guiding sheets.

Nozzle and silencer (9 + 10) The inlet and outlet parts of the jet fan are designed as silencers with integrated, aerodynamically optimized nozzle. The support frame consists of reinforced Ubeams, whose upper webs of channels are adapted to the respective tunnel ceiling. The profiled support frames consist of galvanized S 235 JR steel, for protection against corrosion, and they are powdercoated, too. Vibration dampers are arranged fan between the ventilator housing and suspension device. To prevent the fan from falling down, if the dowels become detached, stainless steel chains, which do not to bear any weight under normal operating conditions, are also mounted at the ends of the fan. If the fan falls into these chains, it is automatically switched off by the safety switch (optional) which is mounted at the housing. The silencers are designed in such a way that the required A-weighted sound power level (execution of the acoustic test in accordance with ISO 13350) is met. The silencers are made from a galvanized steel sheet housing, which is provided with the same powder coating as the fan housing and made of stainless steel perforated plates of material group A4. Stainless design As an option, we also offer our jet fans completely made of special steel.

Dimensioning Aid
Many influencing factors must be taken into consideration when choosing the ventilation system for tunnel systems. Most important for dimesioning of the ventilating system is the quantity of fresh air required with different traffic densities. TURBO LUFTTECHNIK can give advice and support for dimensioning ventilating systems. With the software developed by us, based on the standards of the relevant guidelines (PIARC, RVS, RABT), the amount of fresh air can be calculated if the boundary conditions and traffic data are known. In order to transport this fresh air through the tunnel by means of jet fans, a certain amount of total thrust is required. In order to calculate this thrust, the resistances which have to be overcome must be determined. They consist of: Wind pressure

The resulting total pressure (pt= pi) must be overcome by the installed jet fans. The required total thrust results from:

The thrust indicated in the data lists is always the static thrust SSt measured on the test stand in the free field. In the tunnel this static thrust is reduced to an effective thrust by the interfering tunnel flow stream and the proximity of the suspension device to the wall, which must be taken into account when designing the ventilation system. The effective thrust Seff appearing in the tunnel results from:

Suspension of Jet Fans


The installation factor k is determined by the small distance of the suspension device to the wall. In diagram 1 k is represented as a function of the distance ratio z/d. In diagram 1 the optimal distance to the ceiling is listed over the construction size, whereas optimal is to be judged as a compromise between distance to the ceiling and distance to the clearance gauge. Other influencing factors, which have to be considered for the technical design of the fans are for example backflows from one tube to the other or thermal lift resulting from level differences.

The suspension device consists of two UTAS 6,3 shaped steel plates, TAS 7,1 which are connected with each other by two TAS 9,0 angle sections. For the TAS 10,0 use in a tunnel vault the U-shaped steel plates TAS 11,2 are extended towards TAS 12,5 the contour of the vault. The distances of the holes to be made, please find in the table

Impeller specification
Consisting of of impeller hub and blades individually adjustable during standstill. The hub is sealed with a cover after being mounted. The closed construction prevents moisture from penetrating into the impeller and to the fixation of the blades. Thus, the danger of cravice corrosion in the area of blade food, is excluded. The completely assembled impeller is statically and dynamically balanced according to quality G2.5 in accordance with DIN ISO 1940. The finished impeller is provided with an extremely abrasionproof powdered varnish as corrosion protection - the suitability of this conception for the aggressive tunnel atmosphere was proved in a 1000 hours salt spray test at an independent test institute.

Jet fans type TAS The design of jet fans should be as simple and robust as possible. They have to be designed in such a way, that the special conditions in the aggressive tunnel atmosphere do not affect the reliability during the stipulated service life of 20 years.This applies particularly to the corrosion protection. The fan must be able to work properly for 90 minutes at 250C. A corresponding certificate of an independent testing institute is to be submitted.

Impeller The impeller, consisting of a hub and blades individually adjustable during standstill has to be designed for 100% reverse operation. In order to withstand the aggressive tunnel atmosphere, the impeller consists of a seawater resistant AISIMg alloy. In order to avoid crevice corrosion in the area of the fixation of the blades, the impeller is a completely closed construction i.e. the fixation screws must not come into contact with the tunnel atmosphere. The impeller is to be dynamically balanced according to quality G2.5 (DIN ISO 1940). Impeller: Al-casting alloy G-AlSi9Mg wa. Electric drive motor Three-phase current asynchronous sqirrel-cage rotor in accordance with IEC guidelines without built on fan. The motor has to be mounted in the fan housing by means of a 4-point fixation (IMB 30). A fixation of the flange next to the impeller is not possible. The flange protection class of the motor is IP 55 with insulation class H, according to B and suitable for direct start up. The antifriction bearings are sealed for life with a life of min. 40000 h. The motor windings are made with cold conductors for temperature monitoring. The motor must be suitable for an operating time of 90 minutes at 250C. The cables (power and monitoring) must be free from halogen and flameproof and connected to the external terminal box.

Fan housing with motor support Standard housing with welded fixation struts for the centric installation of the drive motor. All welding seams are continuously welded. On the outside of the housing there is a powder coated terminal box made of aluminium casting for the motor cables. Suitable screwed cable glands made of brass are to be provided for connection. The size as well as the terminal area must be agreed upon in advance with the customer. Housing and silencer: Steel S235JR, galvanised in accordance with ISO 1462 (min. 50 m) and powder coated RAL 7030 (100 m). In front of the impeller guiding ribs with a corresponding tail fairing are arranged for the optimization of aerodynamics.

Silencers Each silencer is to be equipped with an aerodynamically shaped inlet nozzle, which is welded continuously the outer shell of the silencer. The perforated plate is made from A4 inox steel. Between the perforated plate and the outer shell the sound absorbing, non-inflammable fibre wool is to be arranged. To prevent the fibre wool from coming out through the perforated plate, a water-repellent, sound pervious glass fleece is to be inserted. The silencers have to be dimensioned in such a way, that the sound power level indicated in the data list wont be exceeded.

Suspension The jet fans have to be mounted on the ceiling parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. The mounting frame has to be a rigid welded construction. Heavy duty support anchors made of Inox steel 1.4529 approved for zonessubjekt to tensile forces have to be used. No vibrations may be be transferred to the tunnel ceiling, therefore vibration dampers have to be provided.

Safety chains In case the suspension fails, the fan is protected from falling onto the road by safety chains. On the silencer ends safety chains made of stainless steel have to be arranged on the tunnel ceiling independent of the suspension frames. Heavy duty anchors from 1.4529 have be arranged as well. Under normal operating conditions the chains do not bear any load.

Safety switch The fan is automatically switched-off by the safety switch, which is attached to the housing. The safety switch is designed as an opening safety switch.

The resund-Tunnel

With 200 jet fans of type TAS 7.1 of the latest generation, we are providing fresh air in the resund Link.

The resund Link is an impressive tunnel and bridge connection between Denmark and Sweden.

The construction of the 4,050 m long tunnel was necessary, because a continuous bridge would have an adverse effect on the air traffic of the airport in the neighbouring city of Copenhagen.

An artificial island is connected to the tunnel from where the route is led on the 7,845 m long bridge.
