The Syracuse Philharmonic: Central New Yorks House Band

5-year Phased Plan

The Syracuse Philharmonic will be grown over five years. It will begin with a conductor, director of operations & personnel, staff support provided by Syracuse University and 100% sessional musicians paid per service. Staff members, full-time musicians, full-time fellows, and part-time interns will be added over time as resources permit. The following outline is merely a guesstimate. Development of the Syracuse Philharmonic could happen more quickly or slowly depending on resources. Year I (2011-2012) Year one will consist of community forums to discuss the musical needs of Central and Upstate New York, meetings with politicians and donors, and a handful of performances that unveil a new artistic vision that is flexible, innovative, and responsive to Central and Upstate New York. An artistic planning committee will be formed comprised of the artistic manager/music director/conductor and members from the Center for Live Music in the 21st Century. Administration Artistic Manager, Music Director, Conductor Daniel Hege Director of Operations & Personnel (Responsible for management of business affairs for years I, II & III) All support services provided by SU Center for Live Music in the 21st Century Players sessional musicians hired per service as needed To Do List - establish a 501c3 - develop MOUs between the 501c3 and SU, City, and County - found the Center for Live Music in the 21st Century - secure donation of music and equipment from M&T to the Setnor School of Music - secure financial support from Onondaga County and the SSO Foundation - identify board members o the new chair will play a key role in being the face of the orchestra and overseeing dayto-day management o composition will include a mixture of SU appointees and community members Performances (A handful of performances will be scheduled that demonstrate a new type of organization.)

Year II (2012-2013) Year two will consist of an expanded number of performances that continue developing a new organization that is flexible, innovative, and responsive to Central and Upstate New York. A Director of Development & Patron Services will be hired. Relationships with additional venues will be developed. Small ensembles will be booked to external venues for fees. Year III (2013-2014) Year three will consist of continuing to expand the number of performances and relationships with external audiences (venues, customers, etc.). Philharmonic personnel will begin to be stabilized by hiring an Executive Director and full-time musicians able to perform a wide variety of styles. Part-time graduate interns from the Setnor School of Music will begin performing for selected services. Selected members of the full-time musicians will be added to the artistic planning committee. Administration Artistic Manager, Music Director, Conductor Daniel Hege Director of Development & Patron Services Director of Operations & Personnel Executive Director other support services provided by SU Players Full-time Musicians Part-time Graduate Interns (graduate students from Setnor School of Music on fellowships) Sessional Musicians (per service as needed)

Year IV (2014-2015) Year four will consist of continuing to expand the number of performances and relationships with external audiences (venues, customers, etc.). Philharmonic personnel will be stabilized by hiring two staff members (Administrative Assistant, Sales Manager), the remaining members of full-time musicians, and full-time fellows. Administration Artistic Manager, Music Director, Conductor Daniel Hege Director of Development & Patron Services Director of Operations & Personnel Executive Director Administrative Assistant Sales Manager other support services provided by SU Players Full-Time Musicians Full-Time Fellows (recent graduates of universities and conservatories on 2 or 3-year contracts) Part-Time Graduate Interns (graduate students from Setnor School of Music) Sessional Musicians (per service as needed)

Year V (2015-2016) Syracuse Philharmonic is established and stable.
