In my last year of seminary I was worked with Dr. Jones at Normandy United Methodist Church. One day when Dr. Jones was at a meeting, some people stopped by to see if the church would be open to renting a part of the building to a not for profit agency. I got so excited about the potential of this group being in the building and helping us with our

cash flow, that I could hardly wait until Dr. Jones returned from his meeting so I could tell him about this great opportunity. He listened patiently and then he looked at me with wisdom in his eyes and said, There are always many good things we can do. The important thing is to discern if they are God Things. The risk is that if you do every good thing

you might be so busy that you dont even see the God Thing, and the ministry opportunity is missed. As I found out more information about this particular organization, I realized that it was a good thing but not a God Thing and it could have distracted us from the work we really needed to be doing at Normandy. Our sister Jenni Joerger has completed testing to be approved for her critically needed kidney transplant. Matching criteria has changed dramatically and almost anyone can be a donor. All testing and hospital costs are covered by Jennis insurance. A donors hospital stay is only 3 days on average. If you or someone you know would like to be a donor for Jenni, contact the Pre-Transplant Office at Barnes, 362-5365. Like Noah, we have a commitment to ensure that every living thing, all creatures great and small, have a chance to live in Gods creation. What will you do tomorrow to be a good steward?

There is a very large race downtown on Sunday, October 23. Many of the roads in the city including Grand and Kingshighway will be closed to traffic. The only in and out access to Lafayette Square appears to be from Jefferson Avenue. It is highly recommended that you visit the following site and ask for alterE a r t h

nate route directions from your home to the church so that you will be able to plan a route for Sunday morning service! Please do this well in advance so that you will receive a timely response. Use the community contact form on this webpage to request directions: http:// C a r e : W h a t J u s t i c e ?

runrocknroll.competitor.com/stlouis/road-closures. We will have copies of the tentative race route and planned road closures by street name posted on the bulletin boards at church and also posted to our egroup. We are a persistent bunch, so hopefully all of us will find a way to make it here! I s E c o -

We hear the term ecojustice, but what does it mean? One opinion . . . As people of faith, the call to work for justice rings loud and clear. The prophet Micah tells us to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8). As people created by God,

and as part of creation, doing justice means, partly, being good stewards of the rest of creation. When God called Noah to build the ark, he gave explicit instructions for Noah to take along not only his family, but said that every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark,

to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every kind shall come in to you, to keep them alive. (Gen. 6: 19-20)

We are fortunate to now have an Assistive Listening System (ALS). This allows congregants who have limited hearing to be able to enjoy our services. The Trustees made the purchase this summer and feedback and accolades of the new system have far outweighed the cost. One of our dear congregants who has worshipped with us for over 50 years has this to say: the first Sunday of

the new system was the first time I heard Kathleen preach. THANK you so much. An ALS is a personal speaker where the individual can increase the volume to accommodate their level of hearing needs. Research indicates that people who are hard of hearing require a volume increase of about 15 to 25 dB in order to achieve the same level of understanding as people with
T h a n k

normal hearing. An ALS allows this increase without making it too loud for others. Even individuals who have cochlear implants can gain increased hearing, based upon the type of yoke or listening apparatus used with the ALS transmitter. The connection on the receiver is a standard mini -plug, as found on standard headsets. This means individuals can use their own headsets.
T h a n k

One last thing about having an ALS here; Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) stipulates that ALSs be provided in public places unless a provider can prove that it is an undue burden. Praise the Lord, LPUMC is now in compliance. Bill Byrd, AVWorship

One of the jewels of our sanctuary, our east stained glass window, needs immediate attention to its structural integrity. If you love the way the light hits the sanctuary on Sunday morning, have seen a visitor snap pictures of our windows, or simply wish to ensure a safe and structurally sound place of worship, please join us in raising funds to restore our historic east window. You can help by donating, as God leads you, to our Stained Glass Window fund. Please indicate stained glass window in the check memo and place in the offering or mail to LPUMC, 2300 Lafayette Ave, St. Louis, MO, 63104.

In September, our Bishop shared principles to help churches align with vision at the District Conference. 1) Spend time on the balcony step back so that we can be strategic. Meetings should focus on big decisions and leave ongoing decisions to committees if there is a climate of trust. We should focus on adaptive problem-solvingfiguring out what the problem is and what we need to do rather than assuming we know the root cause. We should also answer divergent questions rather than convergent questions.

Convergent questions make assumptions: WHEN are we doing it, WHO is leading it, WHAT theme are we using? Divergent questions start with no assumptions: WHY are we doing it, WHO are we wanting to reach? WHERE is the best place to offer it so that we can reach them? In divergent thinking, subsequent questions arise only after the first question is answered. 2)We need to regulate distress. Perhaps resistance to change is not a problem to be fixed. Resistance can provide informationcriticism is information about what people fear; which represents loss

and grief related to a change. 3)Vision is another area of focus; our leaders help with visioning and is strongest when the vision evolves between the leaders and the congregation. 4) We need to keep disciplined attention to the mission. For every decision and current or potential ministry fill in the blanks: We are going to do ________ so that________, so that _________. Keep asking the so that question until you get to the heart of the matter.

We should draw a direct line of sight to the mission in every discussion. 5)We should maintain a persistent focus on fruitfulness. If an activity is not fruitful then stop doing it! Ask questions about every activity in your churchHow many are being reached? What difference does it make? 6)We need to protect the voices at the margins. The health of the church is at the center, while growth in a church often comes from the margins; our new people and visitors asking questions.

Over the last several months we have been praying, fasting, talking, and discerning what God would have us do in the area of Winter Outreach. When we entered the process, I didnt have clarity about the specific way we were to partner with Winter Outreach. What the Spirit was prompting me to do was for us to walk through the discernment process together as a faith community. It has been a challenging thing for us to wrestle with this as a faith community. The passion about this discussion has been intense at times. Miscommunication has hurt feelings and there has also been forgiveness and healing. We have truly learned a great deal as a faith com-

munity as we have processed our various opportunities to help protect people from the harsh winter elements. On Monday, September 19, our council decided that we would partner with Winter Outreach by providing volunteers to help staff another location, or providing food / snacks to that location, collect donations of socks, gloves, blankets, and coats, and to provide opportunities for our neighbors to continue the discussion of homelessness in our community. While we are not going to be an emergency back-up facility this year, our participation and conversation with other congregations has encouraged two churches in other

neighborhoods to function in this capacity. So while we will not be offering 10 15 beds at our location, we have been responsible for adding potentially 30 beds to the winter outreach shelter program this year. This alone is a significant expansion and I do believe this expansion wouldnt have happened had we not walked through the process. My friends, there are many good things for us to do in our community. I do think that the greater impact happens when we spend time praying and discerning to hear what God wants us to do. Doors open, relationships are strengthened, lives are transformed and God is glorified. Let us continue

I haven't had to write for a newsletter before, so this is new to me folks! My wife and I are enjoying getting to know Lafayette Park and everyone here; we look forward to doing more of that. Just to give an overview of what I currently have in the works, I'm working on developing a young adults group. We're hoping to have a potluck or some other sort of gathering once a month or so in a (hopefullly!) willing participant's home. I think this will be a fun time for fellowship and a good opportunity for people to catch up and connect. We plan to do the first potluck in November, the date and location are TBD. In addition, I'm considering having a weekly/ biweekly book study for young adults. It would be a 6-8 week study depending on the book. The book I'm considering is Adventures in Missing the Point: How the Culture-Controlled Church Neutered the Gospel by Brian Mclaren and Tony Campolo. If anyone has a preferred time or has a book they've been itching to get at, feel free to contact me. We plan to start the study towards the middle of October and will announce a date, time, and location very soon. As far as contemporary music goes, I'm still in the initial stages. We may have some sort of special music ready to go soon, and anyone interested in being a part of contemporary music feel free to contact me (zwaldo86@gmail.com). Our college ministry has been on a brief hiatus and started back up at the end of September for regular Thursday evening get-togethers. The youth have had a slow month but worked in some fun moments! We just recently built mezuzahs to remind us to pray and read scripture. The youth also worked hard in the McKinley Peace Garden on Sunday

the 25th following service and fellowship. We gained an appreciation

attending the WoW conference.

**Mezuzahsdid you know this is a box containing the shema which is traditionally placed near the door to remind Jewish families of their commitment to God?**
of dirt (no, that is SOIL). We are looking forward to: starting confirmation

Im still on the lookout for individuals who are interested in working with the youth in any capacity. Some things we can use help with are fundraising, hosting meetings, event sponsors, and a prayer chain. We want our youth and young adults covered in prayer for this upcoming school year.

We are in need of three or four adults to participate in confirmation as a youth sponsor. If your gift is giving, items we could use include a people mover/ van, and snacks. Im looking forward to sharing this ministry work with youplease give me a call at 309.258.4126 for details! Dan Shanks

October Birthdays

Over 300 St. Louis area non-profits, including The Bridge, have submitted entries into Monsantos Grow St. Louis contest. Public voting will determine the top three winners of $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 grants from Monsanto. Please go to www.stlgrown.com to vote for The Bridge. You can vote up to 100 times per day from Sept. 26 through Oct. 16. Vote daily and vote often! The Bridge project entry is for a family room. The family room will provide a space at The Bridge dedicated to children and their parents/guardians. Here, the kids will have a place to play and rest, and their parents will be able to spend time with themand with other caregiversin a space that is more cozy and conducive to child care and conversation. Social workers trained in family services will be available. We hope youll support this by voting for The Bridge and spread the word to all your friends and family members to vote too!
