Safety Instructions

The Telelink-H is a highly sophisticated telecommunication device. Although all reasonable measures have been taken by KRONE to build a save device, certain precautions have to be observed to avoid damage and/or personnel injury. Important safety information is highlighted as Warning and Caution instructions. You must obey these instructions. The use of Warnings and Cautions is defined below: Instructions are marked with Warning when it is essential that they are followed in order to avoid personal injury or death.

!
Warning

Instructions are marked with Caution when they must be followed in order to avoid damage to the product itself, to any connected equipment as well as errors in the overall process. Following, general Warning and Caution instructions are given. Additionally, Warning and/or Caution instructions are given during the procedures as appropriate, before the instruction they apply to. Always adhere strictly to the procedures given herein; no use/procedures other than specified herein and in related KRONE manuals is allowed. The system is powered by voltages that are lethal (mains voltages). During normal installation there is no need to open the casing, so no live wires are exposed and no danger exists. Remove the mains cable before opening the casing. The Telelink-H external power supply unit may contain rechargeable batteries of the NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) type (check the product label on the power supply). Do not charge them at ambient temperatures below 0 or above 40C, otherwise the gas pressure inside

the batteries could rise and alkaline gas or oxygen and hydrogen could leak from the battery. Never disassemble the Telelink-H or its power supply and in particular not the battery. Never throw the Telelink-H or the power supply or parts of these into fire. The electrolyte inside the battery is highly alkaline and can damage skin and clothes. Provide proper overvoltage protection for the mains, for the antenna and/or telephone wire if it is exposed to lightning, e.g. if it is installed open air or underneath the roof of the building or if the cable runs under such conditions, or in the ground. The Telelink-H generates, uses and radiates radio energy. If it is not installed in strict accordance with this installation manual, it may cause harmful interference to other radio communications. Any warranty claims can only be acknowledged by KRONE, if the Telelink-H and any parts thereof have been handled, installed, operated and used according to the instructions given herein and in related KRONE publications. Electrostatic discharges may damage electronic components. Make sure you and the Telelink-H are discharged when opening the casing and/or working at any parts therein. The use of an antistatic wrist strap and electrically isolated tools is generally recommended. Ensure an effective natural convection, i.e. do not obstruct the devices and provide the free space around as stated.

3.1

Introduction
Acknowledged Use of the Telelink-H

The Telelink-H is designed as a highly automated device. It is the customer terminal unit CTU of the Telecell-H system, which can handle up to 4000 such customer terminal units. The Telecell-H system provides the telephone customers via radio links with access to the public telephone network. The Telelink-H itself is operated by a secure low voltage but has an power supply unit converting mains power to the input voltage level required by the Telelink-H. This external power supply may have optional rechargeable batteries for uninterrupted operation. The power supply via a solar generator is also possible. The Telelink-H provides the telephone customer with a standard interface (usually Tip/Ring interface, others as selected with the order) to which customer station devices designed accordingly can be connected. The customer interface operates like any standard phone line interface. The Telelink-H sets up a radio link within the RF band for incoming and outgoing calls. At idle times the customer terminal unit is in stand-by with no active radio link. The Telelink-H 3 consists of the subsystems: s The electronics contained in the Telelink-H casing. s The antenna connected directly or via cable to the Telelink-H electronics. s The telephone standard interface provided at a socket at the Telelink-H casing. s The in-line power supply unit being fed by the mains at the input and providing 12 V DC to the Telelink-H at the output. Depending on the type this may include a backup battery for uninterrupted power supply even during a mains cut.

Tones The Telelink-H outputs the following, self generated tones via the telephone equipment connected: s Dial tone as programmed at the OMS s Busy tone as programmed at the OMS s Low battery warning tone. The Telelink-H assumes that the external power supply is supported by a backup battery. During a mains power failure this backup battery voltage may fall below a certain limit at which the Telelink-H outputs the low battery warning tone towards the telephone every 10 s until either the input voltage falls below the switch-off voltage (at which the Telelink-H switches off itself to avoid deep discharging of the battery) or the voltage has risen above low battery limit (e.g. due to a return of the mains power). s Service tones (in service mode, refer to Section 8.3 Service Mode Functions) All other tones are generated elsewhere but not in the Telelink-H.

Installation

Chapter 5

Information about Telelink-H Location

The antenna location determines the location of the Telelink-H casing and not vice versa. The antenna may be set on the antenna socket of the Telelink-H or connected via a cable of preferably no more than 3 m length (the shorter the better). A short antenna cable is more important than the length of the telephone line. If however a high antenna mast can provide a higher signal gain than the loss occurring on the correspondingly longer antenna cable, it may be sensible to install an antenna cable of more than 3 m length in order to ensure a sufficient signal reception level. The Telelink-H casing should be installed hanging at a wall. Please note that there is a checklist available (KRONE Document no. 400 041, a copy of it is enclosed with this manual) which should be filled for each Telelink-H during site surveys and/or installation and filed in a way that it can be retrieved easily. It provides for both, as quality ensurance form and as first basic information source during remote troubleshooting.

5.1

Antenna Location

The location of the antenna depends on the actual conditions with regard to the radio signal propagation. The further the site is away from the Telecenter-H, the higher are the requirements for the Telelink-H antenna. Before installing the Telelink-H and its antenna, test the actual transmission conditions using a Telelink-H and the antenna intended for installation (see Section 6.1 Checking the Installation Location).

Chapter 5
The following table states some general conditions and the antenna location that is likely to provide an adequate RF signal (antenna length of rod antennas /2 at least).
Distance Telecenter-H / Telelink-H antennas < 2 km (< 1.25 miles) < 5 km (< 3 miles) < 10 km (< 6 miles) > 10 km (> 6 miles) Antenna type Dielectric rod Location of Telelink-H antenna Notes In a room facing the Telecenter-H Antenna mounted directly on the antenna socket or connected via a cable At the outer side of a wall facing the Telecenter-H At the outer side or a wall facing the Telecenter-H Windows antenna or antenna mounted at outside wall

Dielectric rod Directional antenna

Directional antenna

The Telecenter-H antenna should be visible from the antenna location As high as possible with ideally no Under the roof or on top of the building, an antenna mast, tower, obstruction in the line of sight to the Telecenter-H higher building in the vicinity or on a hill

Table 5-1 Antenna distance and mounting

While installing the antenna keep in mind: s The Telecenter-H antenna should be virtually visible from the antenna location (virtually: at the end of an imagined line free of any obstructions). s The general rule is: The higher the antenna is mounted, the better is the transmission quality. The longer the distance between transmitter and receiver, the higher the antennas should be located. s Thick walls, particularly if made of reinforced concrete, may considerably affect the transmission quality in a negative way. s Metal surfaces or metal objects in the radio signal propagation line, particularly if located in short distance in front of the antenna, may considerably affect transmission quality in a negative way. s If using directional antennas, there should not be any obstruction within the opening angle of the antenna (about 90) and up to 10 m distance. s If obstructions exist in the line of sight between a directional antenna and the Telecenter-H try to direct the antenna toward reflecting surfaces (building walls, hill slopes etc.) that are located to the side of the theoretical line of sight. s Metal surfaces or metal objects behind the antenna may positively or negatively affect the transmission quality. Experiment at the intended location to optimise the position. s A free space of 50 cm or more behind and to the side of the antenna usually improves the transmission quality. Non-metallic obstructions are less important.

Telelink-H 3 Information about Telelink-H Location

Installation

Chapter 5
5.2 Location of Telelink-H

When choosing the location for the Telelink-H consider: s The Telelink-H should be installed hanging at a wall. s The Telelink-H usually is mains dependent, you will need a suitable mains outlet according to the local standards (exception: provision of an alternative power supply like solar power). This outlet should be available for the Telelink-H all time, not be time-shared with other devices. s Telelink-H and the power supply unit generate heat that is removed by natural convection. Therefore take notice of: The free space between the Telelink-H and the wall, as given by the feet, should remain free of any obstructions to allow the free flow of air. Provide around the Telelink-H at least the free space according to Figure 6-1, Section 6.3 Installing the Telelink-H. Do not encapsulate the Telelink-H in any way. Do not encapsulate the power supply unit in any way. s Lay cables (antenna, power supply) in a safe way, that they cannot become a danger to persons (danger of tumbling). If necessary, protect the cables by using special cable conduits as appropriate. s Make sure, Telelink-H and power supply unit are not exposed to direct sunshine and are not located in the direct vicinity of heat sources. Telephone customer cable lightning protection Lightning protection should be installed at both ends of the telephone cable, if the cable is exposed to direct or indirect lightning strikes, e.g. the cable runs open air.
s

Protection devices should be installed at the point, the cable exits/enters the building. The earth terminal of the overvoltage protector should be connected to the building electrical ground.

Provide lightning protection according to the standard DIN VDE 0855 / prEN 50083-1-1991 and according to the local and national standards. Antenna lightning protection Lightning protection should be installed at the antenna and the antenna cable screen, if the antenna is installed on a tower or on top of a building or otherwise exposed to lightning. Connect the lightning protection to the lightning protection system of the tower/building. No lightning protection is required for: s Indoor antennas if installed according to Figure 4-1 with

It provides for both, as quality ensurance form and as first basic information source during remote troubleshooting. Any alterations at the customer site should be discussed with and agreed by the telephone customer.

6.1

Checking the Installation Location

For general information regarding the installation location refer to Chapter 5 Information about Telelink-H Location. Because all other installation work depends on the antenna site, firstly it needs to be checked whether the proposed location provides a sufficient radio transmission quality. Particularly in urban areas, the use of a test receiver is highly recommended. Only as a substitute may be used the receipt signal level indication mode of a Telelink-H as indicator for acceptable signal reception conditions (the Telelink-H to be installed may be used, if the frequency code has been set already refer to Section 7.2 Registering the Telelink-H, Step Service mode, data input

for registering). In order to counter the higher sensitivity of the organisation channel used in the latter case (compared to the communication channels), a 10 dB RF attenuator should be inserted into the antenna line at sites with high fading, e.g. due to multi-path propagation, vegetation etc. For detailed information about antennas refer to Table 5-1. For additional information regarding operation of the Telelink-H system and registering of a Telelink-H with the Telecenter-H refer to Chapter 7 Commissioning and Operation of the Telelink-H. Follow the procedure below until a sufficient transmission quality is achieved. 1. Determine the direction to the Telecenter-H. Use maps, compass or GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver as necessary. Based on the distance to the Telecenter-H (accuracy in kilometres) determine the antenna and antenna position that probably will be suitable for the location (refer to Table 5-1). Consider: The Telelink-H including rod antenna may be installed in the house/flat of the customer in a room facing toward the Telecenter-H. The Telecenter-H should be actually or virtually (no real obstructions) visible. Note If it is intended to connect a fax or modem to the Telelink-H, always select a directional antenna to avoid interference by echoed signals. 3. Check that the antenna position gives a sufficient signal reception quality. For this test you require a Telelink-H that has been set to the correct frequency already (according to the transmission frequency used by the Telecenter-H). Refer to Section 7.2 Registering the Telelink-H, Steps 1 3 and 6 (up to keying in the frequency code) in particular. Note The system operates with vertical polarisation, hence the antenna should always be positioned upright. Connect Telelink-H, antenna, telephone set and power supply unit.

Set the Telelink-H to service mode (refer to Section 7.2 Registering the Telelink-H, Steps 1 3). Do not return the handset onto the telephone. Using the intended antenna position, adjust the antenna for the best signal reception level. Refer to Table 4-2 for the LED reading and acceptable reception levels. 4. If the above did not provide sufficient transmission quality, check: Other positions like in the attic under the roof, on top of the roof, a mast, tower, building in the vicinity, hill or similar. The use of a reflected signal (reflected by a known immobile surface).

6.2

Installing the Antenna

If the procedure above resulted in a separate installation of the Telelink-H casing and the antenna, mount the correct antenna according to the installation instructions provided with the antenna at the place determined in Section 6.1 Checking the Installation Location. Always make sure, the antenna is located upright with the "TOP" mark or similar at the top. Install proper lightning protection equipment when installing the antenna open air or directly under the roof or when running the antenna cable partly at places exposed to direct or indirect lightning strikes. Refer to Chapter 5 Information about Telelink-H Location.

6.3

Installing the Telelink-H

The Telelink-H is installed hanging at a wall with the antenna socket to the right hand side. It is fixed to the wall by three screws. Make sure, the Telelink-H is not exposed to direct solar radiation. Otherwise it may overheat. Make sure, the natural convection is not obstructed. Provide for vertical air circulation all around the device. Do not allow any object including stores to touch the casing. Additionally, stores should not be allowed to obstruct the space between the rear side of the casing and the wall. 1. Choose the mounting location. Make sure that there is sufficient free space around the Telelink-H for natural convection (200 mm at the top, 50 mm at the sides and bottom, refer to Figure 6-1). Select the appropriate fixing method according to the wall material, e.g. use of dowels, direct placement of wood screws etc. and screw in the fixing screws (usually steel screws of 4 x 30 mm [simi6-3

Separate telephone socket If the customers telephone equipment and the Telelink-H are located in different rooms and/or multiple devices are to be connected, a separate telephone socket with multiple outlets should be installed. (The Telelink-H 2 optionally provides 2 RJ-11 telephone sockets in parallel which may be sufficient for the particular telephone customer.) The 2wire cable between Telelink-H and the customer's equipment may be several 100 m long, with the loop limit (including customers equipment) not exceeding 900 . The customer may connect as many devices to the Tip/Ring interface(s) as long as a ringer unit value of 3 is not exceeded (usually one telephone station is equivalent to 1 ringer unit, refer to the station manual). Install proper lightning protection equipment when installing/running the telephone cable partly at places exposed to direct or indirect lightning strikes. Lightning protection should be installed at both cable ends, the customer's telephone equipment and the Telelink-H electronics side. Refer to Chapter 5 Information about Telelink-H Location. Seal any cable glands where the telephone cable leaves the building or may otherwise be a cause for possible water ingress.

6.6

Connecting the Power

The Telelink-H is powered by the mains via an in-line power supply unit. The in-line power supply is intended for a plug and socket installation only (no stationary mains connection). However, the mains socket should be available for the Telelink-H only and not be time shared with any other device. Make sure, the cables are not damaged in any way.

!
Warning

1.

Optionally: Ground the Telelink-H. Depending on the type of Telelink-H it contains a grounding screw (Figure 6-3). If necessary, connect a grounding cable to the screw. Connect the other side of the cable to a good grounding (not the neutral line of the mains!). Grounding is necessary for example if the telephone line runs outside the house or if local standards and regulations require grounding. This screw at best can only be a supplement but nether a substitute for proper lightning protection of the antenna cable and for a good grounding of the mains supply voltage.

Chapter 7

Commissioning and Operation of the Telelink-H

The commissioning of the Telelink-H includes s Opening the Telelink-H Account at the Telecenter-H, realised at the Operation and Maintenance System s Registering the Telelink-H with the Telecenter-H, realised at the Telelink-H using any telephone device with key pad (MFC dialling, the function keys asterisk, , and hash, #, must be available and operational).

7.1

Opening the Telelink-H Account

With the opening of a Telelink-H account, the Telecenter-H is prepared to accept the registering of a Telelink-H with the Telelink-H number dedicated to that customer. Certain parameters regarding the call processing have to be set, too. The Telecenter-H will accept registering of any Telelink-H sending the designated Telelink-H number at the correct frequency, i.e. the field personnel has to know the Telelink-H number assigned in order to be able to register the Telelink-H. The Telelink-H account should be opened by the operator familiar with the Telecenter-H Operation and Maintenance System. For details refer to the Manual Telecenter-H Operation and Maintenance System (OMS) or Telecenter-H OMS for Windows.

7.2

Registering the Telelink-H

The following procedure assumes, that the Telelink-H has been installed properly already (see Chapter 6 Installation of the Telelink-H). However the procedure may be completed before full installation, if necessary. In any case, the Telelink-H must be operational, i.e. connected to the mains, an antenna installed and located in a way that the radio sigKRONE AG, Document number 400 062.00, Issue October 1999 7-1

nal reception quality is sufficient. A Telelink-H account must have been opened at the Telecenter-H (see Section 7.1 Opening the Telelink-H Account, for the exception see Section 7.3 Registering to Test Number). For the following procedure you will need the s Password (4 digits) s Frequency code number (3 digits) that represents the frequency range of the Telecell-H system (the number is shown by the Operation and Maintenance System, refer to the Manual Telecenter-H Operation and Maintenance System (OMS) or Telecenter-H OMS for Windows) s Telelink-H number of the account opened for that customer (last 4 digits) All these numbers may be obtained from the local project manager. Before starting to register, check whether s the Telelink-H is installed properly at the designated location. In particular check the safety features of the installation, e.g. lightning protection, safe cable runs (refer to Chapter 6 Installation of the Telelink-H). s the antenna is connected. s the power supply unit is properly connected to the mains of the correct voltage. Following the procedure for the first log-on of a Telelink-H to the Telecenter-H (registration) is given. The sequence as stated here is recommended, though it is not a compulsory one. The acoustic signals can be monitored via the speaker of the handset. 1. Connect a telephone device with keypad and tone dialling to the Telelink-H (see Section 6.5 Installing the Customers Telephone Equipment). Lift off the handset. You should hear the busy tone, i.e. the Telelink-H is operational but not registered with the Telecenter-H. Busy tone: Individual 440 Hz tones, 400 ms duration, 400 ms pause. Within 10 s: Enter the password Key in the 4 digit password including start (#) and end ( ) character (1 s interdigit time, otherwise the characters dialled are recognised as dialling digits). #____

mined already (Section 6.1 Checking the Installation Location), you can terminate this test: Key in the hash key (#). The acoustic request signal for input of customer phone number is sent. Request tone: Two 600 Hz tones, 100 ms duration, 100 ms pause. Key in the 4 digits of the Telelink-H number. In case of an invalid number, the acoustic request signal is repeated, try again starting with the first one of the last 4 digits. If successful, the acoustic request signal for acknowledgement of data input is sent. Request tone: Alternating 300/600 Hz tones, 100 ms duration each You may terminate the procedure at any time (e.g. after input of a wrong telephone number) by hanging up the handset. If so, start again with Step 2. Urgently hang up the handset now if you are not absolutely sure having keyed in the correct telephone number. Press the hash (#) key. The hash key initialises the automatic registering of the Telelink-H with the Telecenter-H using the organisation channel immediately followed by a power service (transmission power adjustment). The power service is accompanied by an acoustic signal. The registering procedure cannot be interrupted anymore. Acoustic signal: Short beeps starting at a low frequency shifting to a high frequency (the higher the frequency, the lower the transmission power). Registering acknowledgement: s A voice message generated by the Telecenter-H acknowledges the successful registering. (Voice message: Customer specific). s A busy tone indicates the rejection of the registration by the Telecenter-H (Telecenter-H account not opened). Hang up the handset. The Telelink-H exits the service mode and is operational. If the automatic registering has been unsuccessful (e.g. an error has occurred), a busy tone is sent by the Telelink-H. Hang up the

handset and start again with Step 2. Ringing and dialling test may be skipped. Reasons for the lack of success may be an insufficient transmit/receive field intensity (refer to Section 6.1 Checking the Installation Location) or a wrongly installed antenna. 7. Test calls Lift the handset. The idle tone is the assurance, that the automatic registering procedure was successfully, even in case the voice message was not received. If no idle tone is present (then you should hear a busy tone), a break down of the radio link may have occurred. Check the Telelink-H as stated above (at the beginning of this Section 7.2 Registering the Telelink-H). Other causes may be at the Telecenter-H side, e.g. an allocation of all the radio channels available to phone calls, or changed radio propagation conditions since the antenna location has been chosen. You may retry at different times. Call a phone number where somebody is available to answer your call (e.g. operator). Check whether both sides receive an acceptable signal (subjective impression). Get the other party to call you. Check again, whether both sides receive an acceptable signal. If the signal is not acceptable (e.g. too much noise) optimise the antenna position or use an antenna with a higher gain, see Chapter 5 Information about Telelink-H Location and 6 Installation of the Telelink-H. If it is intended, to use the customer interface for any type of electronic communications (e.g. fax, modem), you may test the operation of that equipment, too. 8. In case you have used the customer equipment: Make sure that no secret information (phone or code numbers) are stored in the memory of these devices. If necessary, dial unsuspicious numbers to overwrite any secret ones.

Notes s The sequence of Steps 4, 5 and 6 is not compulsory though sensible. s Step 4 and 5 may be omitted, which is sensible in case of a procedure repetition caused by circumstances not related to ringing or dialling problems.

s

Step 4 and 5 may be repeated with any Telelink-H (including registered ones). To enter the service mode: Lift the handset (the idle tone is sent). Key in the password as described in Step 3. Once successfully completed, Step 6 cannot be repeated using the same Telelink-H number (whether using the same Telelink-H or another one). Such request will be ignored. However, if in the number scheme you set the LgL flag for that number again, registration of any Telelink-H to that number is possible again (refer to Section 7.1 Opening the Telelink-H Account and Manual Telecenter-H Operation and Maintenance System (OMS) or Telecenter-H OMS for Windows), reregistering of a Telelink-H to that number is possible (Step 6). If voice and tone signals are received distorted only by the phone customer, the reason may be a too low loop current on the Tip/Ring line. Change the external configuration (shorter Tip/Ring line, less load on the line etc.)

7.3

Registering to Test Number

When registering a Telelink-H, it has to be registered to a dedicated account (phone number) opened at the Operation and Maintenance System (OMS). If for some reason (e.g. radio interference problems) the registration fails, it may well be that the account will be closed nonetheless for any further registering attempts by the Telecenter-H. If you expect trouble during registering of the Telelink-H, you may register it to one of the two test accounts (the same procedure as described in Section 7.2 Registering the Telelink-H). These accounts allow repeated registering, whether successful or not. There is however, no call possible on these accounts. This way you may test that registering is possible at a certain site and if so register then to the correct account. The phone numbers of these test accounts are the service phone numbers of the SAC module (Port A and B). These may differ from installation to installation. Please check with the staff operating the Operation and Maintenance System (Manual Telecenter-H Operation and Maintenance System (OMS) or Telecenter-H OMS for Windows) what numbers within the numbering scheme are allocated to the SAC module.

Maintenance and Service, Cleaning

Inside the casings (Telelink-H and in-line power supply) are no field serviceable parts. Service and maintenance is the task of suitably trained and supervised personnel at a service centre only. The Telelink-H requires little maintenance only.

8.1

Failures

A malfunction may show up in several ways. First check the LEDs. The lower three LEDs indicate power supply problems (green and red) and radio transmission problems (yellow), refer to Table 4-1. The upper 5 LEDs indicate the receipt signal strength, Table 4-2. To ensure, the malfunction is actually caused by the Telelink-H, check as follows. 1. Check the mains voltage is available and of the correct voltage (see label on the in-line power supply). Check the external connections of the Telelink-H (mains, telephone, antenna). Make sure the connectors are properly seated and the cables not damaged. Make sure that any outdoor connections and grounding kits (antenna cable) are properly sealed. If in doubt, replace cable by cable. Check that the antenna is in good order. Replace the customers telephone equipment by a telephone, you know of that it does work, and connect it to the Telelink-H RJ-11 socket directly. Replace the Telelink-H by a device you know of that it does work and that is registered with the Telecenter-H.

The following procedure switches a Telelink-H into testlink mode or back: 1. Press key * in service mode. A 600 Hz tone is generated. 2. Key in the four digit Telelink-H number (refer to Section 7.2 Registering the Telelink-H, Step Service mode, data input for registering). A 1000 Hz tone (testlink mode activated) or 300 Hz tone (testlink mode deactivated) is generated. In testlink mode indicator functions of the lower green and yellow LED are exchanged between both LEDs. ??? A Telelink-H in testlink mode operates with respect to the phone call capabilities like any Telelink-H, i.e. the analysis will be interrupted for any call setup request. However it is not advisable to operate a customer Telelink-H in testlink mode permanently. For a permanent monitoring of the signal propagation quality, a Telelink-H used for the organisation channel analysis only should be installed at a place critical for the radio wave propagation. For a correct organisation channel analysis, within the Telecell-H system one Telelink-H only should be operated in testlink mode . Setup of max. length # of flash pulse In order to be recognised as flash pulse, the signal must fit into a given time window. Pressing the next key, the recognised flash pulse length is set to s 75 ... 310 ms (default; key 1; 1 acknowledgement beep of 600 Hz) s 75 ... 500 ms (key 2; 2 acknowledgement beeps of 600 Hz) s 75 ... 900 ms (key 3; 3 acknowledgement beeps of 600 Hz) The flash pulse configuration is always set for both Tip/Ring interfaces.

Receipt Signal Level Test

The Telelink-H provides the means for determining the receipt signal level. Because the receipt signal level strongly depends on the antenna position and adjustment, the receipt signal level test provides a means for determining the best possible antenna position.

Chapter 8
The signal level is indicated by the five upper LEDs. The range is from about 92 ... 57 dBm. Depending on the Telelink-H operation mode, two resolutions are available: In standard operation mode about 10 dB resolution (the LEDs operate like a indicator bar), in service mode about 2 dB (the LEDs display the level in binary mode), refer to Table 4-1 and Table 4-2. The service mode receipt signal level test is programmed as part of the Telelink-H initial registration. The test may however be invoked at any time and terminated without going through the whole registration routine. The test indicates the signal level of the organisation channel. Proceed as follows, to do the receipt signal level test. 1. Connect a telephone device with keypad and tone dialling to the Telelink-H (see Section 6.5 Installing the Customers Telephone Equipment). Lift off the handset, wait for the dialling tone (busy tone if Telelink-H is not yet registered). Within 10 s: Enter the Telelink-H service password Key in the 4 digit password including start (#) and end ( acter. #____

After successful password input, an acknowledgement tone is given. Acknowledgement tone: 3 individual 1000 Hz tones, 200 ms duration, 200 ms pause. If successful, the device is switched to service mode. 4. Press 0 (maximum transmitter power) or 9 (pay-phone). The acoustic request signal of the Telelink-H for input of the frequency range is sent. Request tone: Single 600 Hz tone, 100 ms duration. 5. Key in the 3 digit frequency code number that represents the frequency range assigned to this Telecell-H system. In case of an invalid number, the Telelink-H falls back into service mode. In case of a valid but wrong number, the Telelink-H cannot communicate with the Telecenter-H any longer. Hang up the

handset and repeat Step 2 to 5 using the correct frequency code. If successful, the Telelink starts the service mode receipt signal level test immediately. Refer to Table 4-2 for reading the test results. 6. Move around with the antenna to determine the position with the best receipt signal level (highest stable value displayed by the LEDs). To terminate the registering procedure: Key in any key except the hash (#). The Telelink-H remains in service mode. To proceed with the registering procedure: Key in the hash key (#). Refer to Section 6.1 Checking the Installation Location for further instructions. The receipt signal level test has been terminated.
