The laws against irresponsible pet ownership and against cruelty to animals are not being enforced now as strictly as they were being enforced then. There are more stray dogs now in the streets of Manila and elsewhere in the Philippines. Dog-eaters are increasing. 2. Dogs are stolen and shipped to Baguio trussed up and packed in cages. They are killed by bludgeoning them on the head or nape with a club, then butchered and cooked. Then they are eaten by drunks as pulutan (bar chow). 3. Every year 9 billion chickens are raised and killed for meat in the US.Every year 1 billion animals are slaughtered by the leather industry.Every year 100 million animals die in experiments and tests.Every year 3 to 4 million cats and dogs (healthy and adoptable) are euthanized. 4. By 2022, 22% of all species will be extinct if no action is taken. 5. In the past few years, organizations and individuals have been using the power of the internet to spread awareness of animal cruelty facts - a great sign considering animal abuse will only continue on a massive scale until enough people come face-to-face with the statistics. 6. According to the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Philippines has 42 critically endangered animals, 65 endangered species and 318 vulnerable animal species. 7. On 2009, PETA Asia Director Jason Baker wrote a letter to Dr. Remedios Habacon, dean of the Far Eastern University- Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundations Institute of Medicine. The letter is about several complaints received by PETA about rabbits being bludgeoned to death to extract a small part of their intestines. All this was done without any anesthetic applied. 8. After centuries of cruelty in the name of entertainment, Spains Catalonia region has held its last ever bullfight after a huge public campaign, mobilised by the citizens initiative Prou (Enough), contributed to a ban on bullfighting. Although the ban does not enter into effect until 1 January 2012, this cruel spectacle was the last in the region as the bullfighting season now draws to a close. 9. Buhay party-list Rep. Irwin Tieng is proposing a bill that would criminalize the sale of animal crush videos and other filmed acts of animal cruelty in the Philippines. House Bill 4595, prohibits Filipinos from knowingly selling, marketing, advertising, exchanging or distributing the videos, which Rep. Tieng publicly denounces as an extreme form of animal cruelty. 10. An international animal rights group is calling on Philippine government officials to release a captive giant crocodile to its natural habitat in the remote swampland of Southern Philippines. The giant crocodile, said to be the largest captive saltwater crocodile in the world, was captured by residents of a remote town in Southern Philippines last September 3.
