Mrs.

Wiggs 2nd Grade

Writing
This week we continued to zoom in on our lives for writing topics. We made a timeline of our day on Monday to identify all the small events that actually happen in our day. We also looked at author Angela Johnsons small moment in her book Joshuas Night Whispers. Finally, we looked at how we can stretch out our small moment stories by describing who, what, where, how and why.

Who is who in room 314?
You may hear your child speak of others in our classroom supporting our learning. I thought it appropriate to provide an introduction: Mrs. Hunter is a consultant teacher who pushes into our classroom every day during writing and math class to support learning. Mrs. Schweers is a classroom aide who supports during writing and spelling class each day. Ms. Konko is a math specialist who pushes in during math to support students who need extra help 2 times per week. Mr. Berends is a speech teacher who pushes into our class to support learners with speech needs. Ms. Cornelius is a student from the High school exploring the field of teaching. She is in the classroom every other day.

Spelling
In spelling we focused on setting up our learning routine. Pre-testing is complete and students will begin working in groups with words and features at a level that will challenge their skills next week. These groups are flexible and students will be moved within groups based on their performance. I will begin next week with a review of known concepts. In addition students will be learning their homework routine. Once the routine is understood and can be completed independently, the homework will be sent home.

Readers Workshop
This week we continued working on building stamina. We also practiced checking for understanding and tuning into new words as we read.

Math Workshop
In math we worked on identifying groups of 10. We played Tens Go Fish and Make Ten. We talked about different strategies we use to make 10. On Friday we took a quiz to show all the ways you can make ten.

Literacy Stations
This week we worked through one full rotation of stations. Students worked independently while I answered questions and pulled students for reading assessments. This week my mantra was.. Do it nice or do it twice. Setting expectations was a big part of this week.
