Tips to reduce work-related aches, pains

No matter where you work, chances are youve come home after a long day with some aches and pains -- even if you spend most of your time at a desk, work station or behind the wheel. While most jobs these days arent hazardous, repetitive stress injuries are common amongst even the most sedentary of workers. While your day at work is unavoidable, the resulting aches and pains in your neck, back or hands are not. Changing your telephone and computer habits, giving your work station an ergonomic tune-up, and taking breaks for stretching can go a long way to prevent injury and reduce discomfort. Our bodies are made to move -- not to maintain the same position or posture for long periods of time or to repeat the same motions endlessly. says Dr. Rick McMichael, president of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). By following these tips from the experts at the ACA you can keep your days relatively pain-free:

STATEPOINT MEDIA

Your texting addiction could be the cause of major pain, as our thumbs were not made for constant tapping, flicking and clicking. Damaged soft tissue in your thumbs is nothing to LOL about. Abbreviate where possible, and learn to take a day off from checking messages. If you must text, alternate using your thumb, index finger and a stylus, if available. Even talkers can fall into bad habits, such as pinching the phone between the ear and shoulder, and leaning on a flexed elbow. Invest in a headset and be mindful of your telephone posture.

Using Your Mobile Device

Do you slouch when you read? Dont break your back when you can break a bad habit instead. Work on maintaining proper posture at your desk and remember to get up and move around regularly. If your wrist is sore, you may be relying on it too much to move your mouse. Use your entire arm and shoulder instead. When typing, keep your wrists straight, your shoulders perpendicular to the floor and your forearms parallel to the floor.

At Your Computer

If youre experiencing any painful symptoms, get help. Doctors of chiropractic can counsel you on modifications to your work station that improve your posture and work habits. DCs also use a variety of non-drug, non-surgical approaches to help with common aches and pains. Keep an eye on your kids, as well. At least 70 percent of Americas 30 million elementary school students now use computers. As a result, doctors of chiropractic are treating more young patients suffering from the effects of working at computer stations that are either designed for adults or poorly designed for children. For more tips on using technology safely, visit www.technohealthy.com. Remember, your body has a lifetime of learning and fun to experience. By using technology safely, youll be able to continue enjoying it years into the future.

Lots of people have spurs in their neck, back, shoulders, heels, etc. Last year, I saw a gentleman in the ofce who had some spurs in this neck. About three months before these were visible on x-ray and were causing him a lot of discomfort. We had recommended he take an herb - Hydrangea (known to dissolve calcied stones and spurs), one three times per day, and a homeopathic remedy - Calcerea Carbonicum 6C, one daily. His pain was gone after 7 10 days and in 3 months, the spurs actually were no longer visible on the x-ray. This is amazing to me. I have been telling people for years that if they have spurs, they have them for life. This, in fact is not accurate. In May I gave a woman some advice about bone spurs. This is her unedited feedback: Hi Bob, I wrote you back in May about the pain/bone spurs at the base of my thumb. I did the hydrangea root through June, August, and am back on it for October. Have continued the cal. carb., but sometimes forget to take it. Thumb pain much better and, surprisingly, Heberdens Nodes [these are the little bumps on the joints below your ngernails] are much smaller. It took them over ten years to develop to the mounds they were, so I should expect the process of reducing their size will be slow. My hands are much more exible, and it seems the skin on the second knuckles of my ngers seems more wrinkled, suggesting that the knuckle has become smaller, leaving slightly baggy skin. Still, have eeting pain in my left thumb joint, and it continues to seem bigger than before. But I am much better and can ride my road bike for many miles without trouble. Thank you, thank you. Bone is dynamic; it is constantly being broken down and built back up. I am not sure this will work for every case of spurs, but it is worth a try. There are a few dietary things to consider if you have problems with spurs. Calcium Carbonate is a big culprit in this problem. That is what causes hardness in water. It is the scale that builds up in the tea kettle, coffee pot, shower/tub, etc. It is the type of Calcium in Tums and many calcium supplements. Too much of this will cause hardening in our body. It is better to use Calcium Citrate for supplementation. Too much acidity in our systems also is a problem. The acidity increases the formation of calcium deposits in inamed areas of our body. So areas of the body that are inamed from injury or from eating Lectin-containing foods are targets for calcium deposits. This is true especially when the bodys acid levels are high. Some medications increase acidity. For example, Ibuprofen (Motrin) is an anti-inammatory, but it also increases acidity, so it can indirectly add to the inammation issues. So avoid acidic foods, sugar, tomatoes, oranges, pork, pop, etc. Follow the Eat Right for your Blood Type program. Drink lots of good, pure water. And use medications only if needed. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
