ICICI ICICI Bank Recasts Investment Banking Biz; ICICI Securities Left With Equity Markets And ResearchThu, 04/05/2007 - 04:49 Sahad P V

This was expected. ICICI Bank, Indias largest private sector bank, has recast its investment banking business in order to win large, global size advisory business. The Corporate Products and Investment Banking Group of the bank has been renamed as the Global Investment Banking Group (GIBG). What it also means is that ICICI Securities, the wholly owned division of ICICI Bank, would not do any investment banking work, but would now focus only on equity markets and research. "The investment banking business of I-Sec will shift to GIBG, while the retail equity brokerage part of ICICI Bank, called ICICIDirect.Com, is now a part of I-Sec," DNA quotes Kalpana Morparia, the Joint MD of ICICI Bank, from a letter she sent to the staff. GIBG will have three groups under it, which will be headed by senior general manager Kalpesh Kikani. He will report to deputy managing director Chanda Kochhar. The three groups are Global Structured Finance & Advisory Group (GSFAG), Financial Institutions and Syndications Group (FISG) and International Syndications Group (ISG). The new structure will help the i-banking division leverage ICICI Bank's balance sheet size and capital base, when structuring and syndicating M&A deals. This recast is pertinent since Indian corporates are increasingly going overseas to make large acquisitions. But none of the Indian i-banks are in a position to win those mandates (for instance, Tata's Corus buy) since they don't have the balance sheet power as a Goldman Sachs or an ABN Amro has. It's not clear where the existing investment banking employees of ICICI Securities will go to. Will they stay back at I-Sec or move to ICICI Bank?
