I.Designofthelogo
TheInternationalYearofForests2011(Forests2011)logoisdesignedtoconveythethemeofForestsfor People celebrating the central role of people in the sustainable management, conservation and sustainabledevelopmentofourworldsforests.Theiconographicelementsinthedesigndepictsomeof themultiplevaluesofforestsandtheneedfora360degreeperspective:forestsprovidesheltertopeople and habitat to biodiversity; are a source of food, medicine and clean water; and play a vital role in maintainingastableglobalclimateandenvironment. Alloftheseelementstakentogetherreinforcethe messagethatforestsarevitaltothesurvivalandwellbeingofpeopleeverywhere,all7billionofus.

Translationofthelogo

TheInternationalYearofForests2011(Forests2011)logowillbeavailableinthesixofficialUnitedNations languages:Arabic,Chinese,English,French,RussianandSpanish. Member States are encouraged to translate the text International Year of Forests 2011 into local languages and send the translated text only in EPS (graphic) file format via email to the UN Forum on ForestsSecretariatatforests@un.org. UN entities and other organizations using the logo during events or activities organized for the InternationalYearofForestsmayusetheForests2011logoinconjunctionwiththeirorganizationallogo.

II.Usesofthelogo
i. UseofthelogobyentitiesoftheUnitedNationssystem

Entities of the United Nations system may use the International Year of Forests logo without obtaining priorapprovalfromtheUNForumonForestsSecretariat.However,forreportingpurposes,theUNForum onForestsSecretariatshouldbeinformedofeventsandinformationalmaterialsforwhichthelogoisused. ThelogomayalsobeusedforpublicationsthattheUNmayproducewithorwithoutexternal partnersin connectionwithForests2011,including,interalia,posters,brochures,books,videos,flashandPowerpoint presentations,banners,illustrations,andanimations.

ii. UseofthelogobynonUnitedNationsentities
The International Year of Forests logo is primarily intended for three kinds of promotional use: information,fundraisingandusebyacommercialentity.PartiesoutsidetheUNsystemmayusethelogo afterobtainingapprovalfromtheUNForumonForestsSecretariat inaccordancewiththerequirements outlinedbelow. a. Informationusesofthelogo Informationusesofthelogoarethosewhichare: Primarilyillustrative; Notintendedtoraisefunds;and Notcarriedoutbyacommercialentity. AllentitiesinterestedinusingtheInternationalYearofForestslogoforinformationpurposesmustapply totheUNForumonForestsSecretariat.Whenrequestingapproval,theentitiesshouldprovide: Ashortstatementofidentity(natureoforganizationanditsobjectives); Anexplanationofhowandwherethelogowillbeused;and AWaiverofLiability(pleaseseepage5)mustbesignedbytheentityrequestingtousethelogo b. Fundraisingusesofthelogo FundraisingusesofthelogoarethoseintendedtoraiseresourcestocovercostsofInternationalYearof Forests activities organized in 2011. Fundraising uses of the logo may be undertaken only by non commercialentities.AllentitiesinterestedinusingtheInternationalYearofForestslogoforfundraising purposesmustapplyforapprovaltotheUNForumonForestsSecretariat.Whenrequestingpermissionto usethelogoforfundraisingpurposes,theentitiesmustprovide: Ashortstatementofidentity(membership,objectives,etc.); Anexplanationofhowandwherethelogowillbeused; Anexplanationofhowthefundraisingwilltakeplace; Asummarybudget; AnexplanationofhowproceedswouldbeallocatedtocovercostsofInternationalYearofForests activities;and AWaiverofLiability(pleaseseepage5)mustbesignedbytheentityrequestingtousethelogo

c. Usesofthelogobyacommercialentity Theusesofthelogobycommercialentitiesareallthoseundertakenbyorinvolvingcommercialentities, aswellasanyuseintendedtoleadtocommercialorpersonalprofit.Allcommercialentitiesinterestedin using the International Year of Forests logo must apply for approval to the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat.Whenrequestingpermissiontousethelogo,thecommercialentitiesmustprovide: Ashortstatementofidentity(natureofcompanyorenterprise); Anexplanationofhowandwherethelogowillbeused; Thenamesofcountries/territorieswherethelogowillbeused; Thenatureofproducts/servicesthattheentityproduces/sellsinthoseareas; HowtheproductsrelatetothemessagesoftheInternationalYearofForests; Whatprofitstheentityisexpectedtomakefromtheuseofthelogo;and A summary budget, providing expenses and any proposed royalties or contributions the entity is expected to make to local, national or international activities for the preparations of the International Year of Forests in 2011 or in favor of implementation of the activities of the InternationalYearofForestsin2011. Beforethelogoisusedbyacommercialentity,acontractmustbesignedwiththeUNForumonForests Secretariat. In particular, such contracts must include provisions concerning the Waiver of Liability (see page 5). Such contracts must also provide the detailed terms and conditions concerning the use of the logo,includingthedetailsoftheinformationenumeratedabove.Additionally,suchcontractsmustcontain theUnitedNationsGeneralConditionsofContract. d. LengthofuseofLogo TheInternationalYearofForestslogowillbeusedforaperiodoftwoyearsfromJuly2010untilJune2012. Thisperiodincludesthepreparationphasein2010fortheInternationalYearofForests,thecelebrations oftheInternationalYearofForestsin2011,andanysubsequentreportingin2012. The International Year of Forests logo is primarily intended for promotional use, including inter alia websites, posters, brochures, books, videos, flash and Powerpoint presentations, banners, illustrations, and animations. The logo may be used beyond June 2012 in reference to publications about the InternationalYearofForests.

III.Liability
AllentitiesauthorizedtousetheInternationalYearofForests2011logoforthepurposesspecifiedherein mustagreetothefollowingprovisionsonwaiverofliability: The entity is responsible for ensuring that the activities are carried out in accordance with the applicable law and for ensuring that the appropriate insurance is maintained to cover the risks arisingoutofsuchactivities; TheUnitedNationsdoesnotassumeanyresponsibilityfortheactivitiesoftheundersigned;and The entity shall hold harmless and defend the United Nations and its officials against any action thatmaybebroughtagainsttheUnitedNationsoritsofficialsasaresultoftheuseofthelogo. When the logo is used for information and fundraising purposes, the Waiver of Liability form must be signed by the entity. When the logo is used by a commercial entity, the above provisions on waiver of liabilitymustbeincorporatedintoacontracttobesignedbytheentity.AlldulysignedWaiverofLiability forms and contracts must be received by the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat before the proposed activitiesarecarriedout.
