505 Graphics Arts Syllabus


Prerequisite: Visual Art I and/ or permission of instructor Instuctor: T.Travers

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is an advanced class most suitable for juniors and seniors interested in the visual arts. This course combines traditional graphic design with computer technology. Students will study techniques focusing on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Color theory and page layout will be explored through the creation of fliers, brochures, logos, business cards and posters. This class takes place primarily in the computer graphics lab using the Adobe Suite: Illustrator, Photoshop and In Design. Some artwork will be created by hand with pen & ink and silk screening techniques. Students will be introduced to digital photography and file formats including various digital printing techniques. This course will approach creative problem solving from the graphic designers perspective.
LEARNING TARGETS: I can create and critique a variety of graphic works applying the elements of art, principles of design and CRAP (contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity). I can engage in meaningful critiques in a variety of artworks. I can appropriately use the software and techniques to communicate and solve visual problems. I can make connections between traditional and contemporary graphic arts and technology and the global community. I will select and apply a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas used in graphic arts, commercial arts and digital imagery. I use the equipment and materials responsibly and safely. AREAS OF EXPLORATION: Art Appreciation Career Exploration Logo and Chop design Color studies Design studies with text and symbols Adobe InDesign application Adobe Photoshop application Adobe Illustrator application Newspaper/Magazine layout and advertising Promotion Design (catalogs, tri fold flyers, posters, commercials) Story Illustration Packaging Design Digital cameras, still and video Scanning and importing images Preparation for publication Professional presentation of work Computer applications in the fine arts Field trips and guest speakers when applicable and available TARDINESS AND CRISP: **Students are expected to arrive to class on time and to be prepared to work with all of the materials necessary for class. The third time a student is tardy to class the student will be assigned a 10 minute break detention. Subsequent tardies will incur a half hour after school detention. All detentions involve a work assignment

in the art room. If a student does not come to detention or is habitually tardy, he/she will be referred to the administrative team.

CLASS EXSPECTATIONS: Students are expected to keep up with assignments and effectviely use all of class time. Some work will need to be completed outside of class. Students may request a pass to work in the emac lab or art rooms during study halls. This request needs to be done before another class is in progress and is at the discretion of the graphic arts teacher. Students will demonstrate respect and care for the e-mac lab. Tampering with equipment will result in loss of privileges and could result in being romoved from the class and receiving no credit for the class. (See Technology use rules/regulations.) Food and drink (water) are NOT allowed in the lab!!! Students must have a binder. This will be used for homework, in class assignments, note taking and storage. All work is due on the assigned due date unless special arrangements are made. It is your responsibility to make arrangements ahead of time. If you are going on a field trip, sports event, etc., you should pass in any work that is due, before you leave. Late assignments will incur a 10 point penalty for everyday they are late. After a week late work will NOT be excepted. Students will be expected to participate in critiques and class discussions. Students will be expected to display their art work. All artwork should be appropriate. Anything questionable will be referred to the administration. School policies are always to be followed. All students are expected to help support fund raising efforts to raise money for arts enrichment activities as well as art scholarships. GRADING AND CREDIT Grades will include all projects, homework assignments, in class assignments, quizzes, tests and/or evaluations. participation in class discussions and critiques attitude and effort final problems and/ or exams will be given First Quarter: Second Quarter: Final Exam/Project: 40% 40% 20%
