ABSTRACT Wood buildings are becoming day by day a strong and economically valid alternative to their counteracts built with concrete and masonry even in Italy, where until now they had been less common within the residential housing market, even for multistory buildings. The SOFIE Project is a cooperate research project patronized by the Trento Province, Italy, the Sistema Casa Fiemme s.r.l. and coordinated and conducted by the CNR-IVALSA (Italian National Research Council Trees and Timber Institute). The main goal of this project is to completely test a multi-story house built with the solid wood panels with cross interlayers method, considering every single aspect of the building behavior analyzing static, fire, acoustic, thermal and seismic performance. Especially this last point is of the outmost importance considering that in the last Italian Seismic Code (2005) 100% of the Italian territory has been classified as seismic, even if with different hazard levels. In this paper, results from tests on the lateral and cyclic resistance of massive wood panels made with cross inter-layers are presented. Different sizes of wall panels are investigated by means of ramp and cyclic displacement schedules taking into account the influence of the wall configuration, the anchoring system, the opening layout, the magnitude of vertical loads, the inter-story connection. Data obtained from tests will be implemented in an analytical non-linear model in order to obtain information on the behavior under real earthquake excitations. The final task of the project is to perform a full-scale shaking table test on a multi-story building at the NIED laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan, but this will be object of a further publication.
