Toshiba
To reset the password of a Toshiba, you can use KeyDisk. If this doesn't work, you can try to build the Toshiba Parallel loopback. To make a simple device that you connect to your parallel port, a lot of Toshiba computers remove the password when you boot it up. The device, named "loopback" by some, could be made out of any parallell wire with 25pins connectors (db25). You should connect these pins: 1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, 18-25

The Toshiba Linux Utilities

Passwords The Toshiba Pentium portables have two passwords, a user and a supervisor one. When either password is set then when the machine is turned on, or is resumed after a suspend, you have to enter a valid password in order to gain access to the laptop. If both passwords are registered then it is possible to set it so that the setup programs cannot be run when logged in using the user password. To improve security the passwords are held in the EEPROM containing the BIOS. This means that they do not disappear when the batteries run down. They can only be removed if you already know them. DO NOT bother pestering me on how to remove passwords you have forgotten, as I don't know how to remove them. If you do forget the password for your laptop, then you will have to take the laptop to an authorised Toshiba dealer, complete with full proof of ownership where they can remove the password for a fee. I have written two programs svpw for setting the supervisor password and tpasswd for setting the user password. For a number of reasons these programs will only run from the console, and must be run as root in order to work. Currently there is no method of manipulating the hard disk and eject passwords for models that support these features. In the future I hope to add additional programs to enable the hard disk and eject passwords to be set as well.

Source Download For me, distributing binaries would be a significant hassle. Each Linux distribution has it's own ideosyncracies, and it is just not feasible for me provide binaries for each distribution. The stable version of the Toshiba Linux Utilities are included as part of the Debian and SuSE distributions. If the thought of compiling it youself is too daunting then use these versions. If you are having problems downloading the utilities then all I can suggest is trying again latter. It probably means that either the web server is down or there is a problem somewhere on the internet between you and the server. The links are all correct and there is nothing I can do to help. Please be patient and try again latter. Bug Reports If you are submitting a bug report, please make sure you are using the latest development version first, it has be correctly installed and the kernel module is loaded. In addition check the TODO file so you are not reporting a bug I am already aware of. When submitting your report it is vital to tell me what model you are using, what distribution is installed and what kernel revision you are running. If you are reporting a feature that no longer works tell me what version it previously did work on. If a program is crashing tell me what you where doing when it crashed. Without this information your bug report will be worthless noise. Stable The stable version of the utilities requires Toshiba Laptop support either compiled into the kernel or as a loadable module. For 2.4.x series kernels this is located in the Processor type and features submenu, and for 2.2.x series kernels it is located in the General Setup menu. When you type "make install" the special device files required will be created if they do not already exist.

For historical purposes you can still download version 1.1 of the Toshiba Linux Utilities. However this code is unsupported and it is recommended that you use the latest version. If you cannot get this version to work my only advice on the subject is to use version 2.0 or later.

User's Guide
Create a BMP-file: Red characters only with Award BIOS Version 4.51 Green characters only with Award BIOS Version 4.6x and 6.0 File name: File extension: File format: File length: Bmp width: Bmp height: Color deep: 8 chars, no long filename! 3 chars ("BMP") Bitmap file (.BMP) e.g.: "12345678.BMP" 1742 / 2582 resp. 5830 / 8686 bytes (length) 136 pixel (width) 84 / 126 pixel (height) 1 bit (2 colors) resp. 4 bit (16 colors)

Convert BMP to EPA: Start BMPtoEPA.EXE, load BMP-file (xxxxxxxx.BMP) and convert to (xxxxxxxx.EPA). Copy following files to a bootable diskette (without autoexec.bat and config.sys!): 1. xxxxxxxx.EPA 2. CBROM.EXE (Award BIOS version >= 4.6x needs CBROM-version >= 1.30) 3. xxxxxxxx.AWD (BIOS-ROM-Flashfile from your Mainboard manufacturer e.g. XE5X108.AWD for ASUS TX97XE) 4. FLASH-Program (from your Motherboard manufacturer e.g. Flash.exe, Pflash.exe) Start CBROM.EXE (for help use CBROM.EXE /?). Replace EPA logo with CBROM xxxxxxxx.AWD /EPA xxxxxxxx.EPA Attention: to flash your Bios could make your PC unusable, and you have to reprogram your Bios-Chip by an external Chip services! Boot from Diskette, start FLASH-Program with loading xxxxxxxx.AWD Shutdown and restart your computer. Create a BMP-file with PaintShopPro(PSP): For Award BIOS version 4.6x and 6.0 you have to change in this example: 1. 4 bit (16 colors) instead of 1 Bit (2 colors). 2. Use only ONE color in a 8x14 pixel field.

3. Use a graphics program (PSP) to change the colors! 4. At the end, convert your image with BMPtoEPA. This example creates bitmaps for Award-BIOS Version >= 4.51! Start PSP and select white as foreground color and black as background color. Later you can change the color white with BMPtoEPAs color palette. Black as background color - because your monitor background - which shows your EPA-logo - is black too. Create a grid (8x14 pixel) for easy drawing: A good help for pixel settings is the grid function. Open File/Preferences, the submenue General Program Preferences and the option Rulers and Units (see following picture). Set the Horizontal Spacing to 8 Pixel and the Vertical Spacing to 14. Press OK, open View and activate Grid.

Open with File/New a "New Image" and insert the same settings as below:

(Since version 1.30 BMPtoEPA supports a new format! See new format in red characters.) Now its your turn. Create your own logo. BMPtoEPA can only colorize complete rectangles (8 pixel width, 14 pixel height) with one color, because the boot screen is for text not for graphic. So one rectangle is one character! On this course you have: 136 / 8 = 17 chars (rectangles) in

the width and 126 (84) / 14 = 9 (6) chars (rectangles) in the height. The result is a screen area with 17 columnes and 9 (6) rows = 153 (102) characters (rectangles). To fix one pixel exactly on the screen - you can use the X/Y- coordinates in the left bottom of the PSP window. Save the new Bitmap and remember - no long filenames!

Cita: c:\>Debug -->enter c:\>0 70 17 -->enter c:\>0 71 ff --> enter c:\>q P.D.
