EARTH MOVING OPERATOR

DESCRIPTION:
Material moving equipment operators use machinery to move construction materials, earth, and materials. They move materials over short distances around a construction site and some move materials on or off trucks. They may also set up and inspect equipment, make adjustments, and perform minor repairs when needed.

Duties:
Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, loaders and graders to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials during highway or road construction Clear debris, drive piling into earth to provide support for buildings, bridges or other structures Operate dredging equipment to deepen waterways or reclaim earth ll Operate paving and surfacing equipment to spread, lay or compact concrete or asphalt Operate power shovels to excavate rock or other materials from pits, open pit mines or quarries

SKILLs:
Good motor skills Ability to read and interpret blueprints and manufacturer manuals Obtain needed equipment, facilities, and materials and oversee their use Maintain equipment on a routine basis. Determine what kind of maintenance is needed Problem solving skills to determine causes of technical problems and nd solutions

EDUCATION:
Some Secondary School education is required Completion of a one to two year apprenticeship program or some high school, college or industry courses in heavy equipment operating combined with on the job training are required

OVER THE NEXT 2 DECADES 40% OF NEW JOBS WILL BE IN SKILLED TRADES AND TECHNOLOGIES

SALARY: $34,200 to $63,700

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The objective of the Heavy Equipment Operator program is to provide the student with a combination of training in core heavy equipment operator skills as well as trade related skills such as mathematics, computer applications and communications. Graduates of the program will have demonstrated the ability to operate equipment in a safe and efcient manner, perform pre-op inspections and preventative maintenance, install attachments, load and unload equipment, and read and interpret legislation, site plans, and manufacturer manuals.

GETTING STARTED
THE FOLLOWING ARE 3 SIMPLE WAYS OF GETTING STARTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:

You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
