Where in the World?

First Name Hannah Todays Date October 12, 2011 Article Name Einstein's "Speed of Light" Challenged By Neutrino Experiment

Article Source PBS NewsHour Extra Article Date October 11, 2011 Summary of Article (at least 5 complete sentences, no more than 10) A group of European scientists conducted an experiment in Geneva, Switzerland with a particle. The experiment was called OPERA. The scientists say that this particle (called neutrinos) moved faster than the speed of light by 60 nanoseconds, which is a critical piece of scientific history for physicists. The accusations can cause several problems for the physicists, because it can make the ideas of alternate dimensions and time travel quite true. The experiment has many skeptical scientists talking about how the measurements from Geneva to Gran Sasso, Italy, could be wrong. A spokesman for the experiment says that the experiment is too early to make an actual conclusion. Thats why in about six months a lab in the U.S. called Fermilab will conduct another experiment with the same particles to see if the beginning results were accurate. Fermilab has already conducted one experiment with neutrinos. Personal Reflections (at least 5 complete sentences, no more than 10) I thought this article was very interesting for several reasons. The speed of light is very, VERY fast. I, for one, love science and enjoy reading articles that involve Einsteins name . I am a bit skeptical of the experiment myself, but maybe that is just because I have always thought NOTHING could break the speed of light. I believe this article just shows people how you have to be open minded and available for new ideas. I wonder if I will be able to conduct an experiment like this when I get older. High Tide (Extended) Research (at least 10 sentences, no more than 20) A physicist is a person who studies physics. Physics is a natural science that studies matter and its force, energy, and motion through something called space time. It is one of the oldest fields of study, like astronomy. The Greeks were some of the first people to even think about physics and how we use forces. Physics used to be a part of natural history, but it broke off in the sixteenth century when the Scientific Revolution happened. Physics helps advance things we use today, like appliances. Albert Einstein was a physicist. He discovered new laws to the physics we follow in our daily lives. Now, since OPERA has happened, some of our thoughts are proven wrong and have to be revised.Sometimes you dont realize how much science our world revolves around (literally).
