Ikenna Omekam English 1102 N2 Fall Dr. Crowther September 16, 2011 Annotated Bibliography Wing, Charles. Evils of the Factory System. London: Frank Cass and Company, 1837. Print This book discusses many issues regarding the factory system that was in place during the times of the Victorian era. As part of the documented experiences relating to the factory, the author included information about children, and acts that were passed that directly affected the operation of the factories. These laws directly relate to my topic of Child abuse and children in the labor system. I will use the information regarding the laws to demonstrate how the children were placed in long working hours of over eight hours, and even the mortality rates of these children. Cowherd, Raymond. The Humanitarians and the Ten Hour Movement in England. : The Kress Library of Business and Economics, 1955. Print This book discusses a majority of the laws that were passed that directly influenced child labor. The book talks about several attempts to reduce or even remove children from the work system, but only discuss the major acts and laws that lessened the workload on children. This book is very valuable to my research plan because it discusses a lot of the laws that were being passed, which also describes the childrens conditions before the laws were passed. I will use the information to show the effects of laws on children, and if children were really being released from the burden of labor.

Ben-Amos, Ilana. Adolescence and Youth in Early Modern England. Great Britain: St Edmundsbury Press, 1994. Print This source does a great job in showing the development of the child, and actually what a child did during this era. I feel that I could use this information to argue how a child during his era was raised, how they were required to work, and how there development progressed through the year; I can also use this source as a way to show the needs and requirements for a child to develop successfully. One major plus about this source is that I can compare children here to other children around the world during the same time Gasket, Peter. The Manufacturing Population of England. This source was detailing the manufacturing process of England, and how people adapted to it. This source is important to my topic because it helps illustrate the factory side of my research. By gaining knowledge about factories, I can better debate over it. This source did a really great job will explaining the processes and population flock. I feel that this source would fit well with all my topics relating to child abuse, since I can use this information to enhance my argument against the factory system. Kydd, Samuel. The History of the Factory Movement. London: Reynell and Weight. 1857. Print This source, like some of my other sources, tells me information about the factory syste. However, this source also relates the children labor into the movement of the factory system, which could actually assist me with my topic. Because it gives information from the factory point of view, I can actually use this information to counter-argue whatever argument or piece of evidence that the book provides. I feel that this would fit with my main argument, since it can be used to enhance the topic.

Jackson, Louise A. Child Sexual Abuse in Victorian England. Taylor & Francis Routledge, 2000. eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). EBSCO. Web. 27 Sept. 2011. One thing I liked about this source was that it related child abuse to not just labor, but other factors as well. During this time, people were arguing to disallow child labor, but no forms of movements were formed to combat any other sort of child abuse, such as sexual abuse. This source does a good job in detailing how sexual abuse was actually a serious matter during the time. I feel that this source could be used as a sub topic to depict how abuse was not limited to just the labor system.
Bastardy and Baby Farming in Victorian England. Loyno.edu. Haller, Dorothy, n.d. Web. 3 October 2011. This source did a great job in illustrating how children were generally expected to be a source of income. The source described how people would make children solely for the purpose of having extra hands around to help with the economic situation of the family. This source could also be used to relate to modern day families, because the same concept still applies. In many third world countries, this same technique is being used in order to help a family survive. I also liked this source because it actually can relate back to Oliver from Oliver Twist

Child Abuse. Faqs.com. n.p., n.d. Web. 3 October 2011. Although this source was not scholarly, I feel like it still did a great job of giving an overview of the topic. This source would be a very good starting point for me if I were making a paper, and it could help me form core arguments and principles that I would use throughout the research paper. I also feel that using this source in perhaps in introduction and conclusion would also utilize the source the greatest.

Table V. n.d. Wing, Charles. Evils of the Factory System. London: Frank Cass and Company, 1837. Print I feel that this picture is really important to the development of my topic. This source actually gives a list of the number of deaths in the era, therefore, I could use the numbers I obtain from the table and make hypothesis, relating children working in the factory to the high number of deaths in the children area. This source is really powerful because it gives me, concrete factual numbers relating to the time period. Table III. n.d. Wing, Charles. Evils of the Factory System. London: Frank Cass and Company, 1837. Print This source is really good because I can form an argument about education. The picture gives me details about the number of children that were going to school, and also what district school that was from. I could make deduction, saying that the overall numbers were low, because much of the children population were working in factories or just too poor to attend a school Wing, Charles. Evils of the Factory System. London: Frank Cass and Company, 1837. Print (Pg. 433) This source is extremely important because it gives me a timeline of the events concerning children and the factory system. This timeline pretty much gives me an accurate description of all the laws that affected children working in factories, ranging from when they eliminating working on weekends, and even including things such as the youngest a child can be to work for a factory.

Wing, Charles. Evils of the Factory System. London: Frank Cass and Company, 1837. Print (Pg 45) [Same source, different page. Annotation is the same] This source is extremely important because it gives me a timeline of the events concerning children and the factory system. This timeline pretty much gives me an accurate description of all the laws that affected children working in factories, ranging from when they eliminating working on weekends, and even including things such as the youngest a child can be to work for a factory. Table IV. n.d. Wing, Charles. Evils of the Factory System. London: Frank Cass and Company, 1837. Print This table relates directly to my topic, because it actually list the number of children working for the factories. This source would be where I pull much of my argument off of, because it actually illustrates to the readers a definite number of children working for factories. Having this source would also increase my ethos dramatically, because now I have proof about the number of children actually forced into labor. Cowherd, Raymond. The Humanitarians and the Ten Hour Movement in England. : The Kress Library of Business and Economics, 1955. Print (Page 13) This picture is a page from a book that did an excellent job in explaining the process of child labor reforms, and is biased towards abolishing child labor.
