Supplement to the Mansfeld News Journal in partnership with the Richland Community Development Group Supplement to the Mansfeld News Journal in partnership with the Richland Community Development Group

Retail sector joins forces in effort to boost the areas economy
Its been said, when the
going gets tough, the
tough get going. And
thats exactly what hap-
pened when the Richland
Community Development
Group called on the retail
sector to join forces in an
effort to boost the area
economy. Jeff Kent, owner
of Swan Cleaners, and
Dirk Schluter, owner of
Mansfeld Motor Group,
are enthusiastically leading
the grassroots movement
to encourage Richland
County residents to Be Fo-
cal, Buy Local.
When the community got
together, everyone agreed
the most prominent issue
to address is to get people
to buy local, Schluter said.
After that initial meet-
ing, in the middle of the
night I woke up thinking,
focal local which ended
up being the Be Focal Buy
Local campaign slogan,
Kent remembered. Theres
so much national competi-
tion, its hard to get people
to even see what local ven-
dors have to offer. I think
this campaign is beginning
to open their eyes.
The problem were fnd-
ing is that because of the
Internet, people are shop-
ping from home, Schluter
said. Theyre sending their
money all over the coun-
try, rather than support-
ing their local stores and
businesses. Its creating
a snowball effect. As the
stores lose money, jobs are
cut, which decreases the
tax base.
Then everything else
snowballs backwards to
where pretty soon, the
safety services and schools
are in constant need of
money. People just dont
realize how buying on the
Internet not only hurts the
mom and pop shops and
local retailers, but also
hurts our entire economy
and ends up costing us
more in the long run.
Schluter cited the 2011
Independent Business
Survey that shows com-
munities with a buy local
organization will increase
its revenue by 3.5-percent.
We took this number
to the local economic
development unit to put
a pencil to it, Schluter
said. For Richland County,
that 3.5-percent works out
to be $85 million, which
translates to $5.7 million
in tax revenue. It seems to
me that $5.7 million would
fx a lot of the bills we
have right now. And thats
just sales tax. Healthier
businesses mean more
jobs, which would mean
even more taxes being
paid in the form of income
taxes.
When people spend their
money outside of the com-
munity, that money doesnt
come back. But, for every
$100 spent locally, $68
stays here, he said, citing
the study. If people dont
get this concept, our small
towns are going to dry up
and blow away. The down-
town landscape is already
changing. I realize Internet
shopping is convenient.
We can purchase anything
we want right on our
phone in the palm of our
hand from anywhere in
the world. But that conve-
nience is costing all of us.
There isnt a single person
this wont touch.
We need to keep our
money working for us
right here, Kent said.
Even the big chain stores
employ people and pay
their taxes here. If I need a
tool, say, my choice would
be to buy from a mom and
pop store, but Id still rath-
er shop at a big hardware
store in Ontario than go to
Columbus for what I need
or buy it online because
the moneys staying here.
The tax base is a direct
product of sales, if theres
no tax base, then theres
no government services
like fre and police protec-
tion or public schooling
unless we pay for those
things with increasing lev-
ies, Kent said. Supporting
the local economy secures
your own job.
We have to support each
other and always at least
try to buy local frst.
This is about community.
Theres so much available
in this town, we just have
to be willing to look for it.
Mansfeld is not the only
community with this prob-
lem its happening all
across the nation, Schluter
pointed out. But, people
are beginning to wake up
to the fact they must sup-
port their local vendors,
not only for price, but also
for personal service and
selection.
Besides taxes and jobs,
the charity dollars com-
ing from local businesses
is huge, Schluter said,
noting businesses sponsor
schools, teams and events,
offer food and prize dona-
tions and give to every
worthy cause that comes
through the door. So why
wouldnt we want to sup-
port the businesses who
are supporting us?
This campaign is trying
to create awareness to get
people to stop and think
before theyre so quick to
click, or to jump in the car
and drive to Columbus,
Schluter said. People
think theyre going to get
a better deal out of town,
but, gas prices aside, your
local vendors are much
more apt to address price
smaller towns have
lower overhead and will
bend over backwards for
you with customer service.
Its all perception.
In the corporate world,
most of the decision mak-
ing isnt done locally, Kent
said. At the big stores,
the managers arent able
to make decisions without
talking to corporate. At my
store, I make the decisions.
Im right there to help.
Service from our local ven-
dors cant be beat. If you
order your offce supplies
from Ritters, they come to
your store, inventory what
you need and deliver it at
no charge. I know Im sav-
ing money. Locally, youre
going to talk to a real
person a person who
is eager to serve you and
build a relationship. Its
the old-fashioned way.
What it boils down to is,
do we want to take care
of our community or not?
Schluter asked. Shopping
local is paying it forward.
You support the busi-
nesses in your community
and it will come back to
you.The bottom line is,
when people take money
out of their own com-
munity, theyre hurting
themselves.

What once was just a hobby for
Paul Staats after a long day of
farming; has turned into a full-
edged, thriving business. Paul
and Mary Lou started Valley
ATV in July of 1994 in a small
pole shed. Paul did all of the
selling, ordering, and repairs by
himself. We remember thinking,
Where will we nd the next 50
people to buy an ATV after we
sell these?
Valley ATV started out selling
Polaris in 1994. Polaris is
proudly made in America in
Minnesota. We started selling
Can-am in 2003, which are
made in Quebec Canada. Both
companies manufacture both
ATVs and side by sides. This
industry has gone through a lot
of changes in the past 16 years.
Polaris came out with their
Rangers in 1999, which gave
the customer easier on and of
capabilities, as well as a dump
bed to assist them with their
jobs. The Rangers can carry up
to 6 people very easily. Then,
to add a new twist to the sport
market, they added the Razor
in 2008. This unit gives the
customer a fun, new ride on the
trails with more comfortable
seating and the ability to carry
up to 4 passengers. Can-am
followed the side by side market
in 2011 with the Commander.
The Commander can carry 2
people very comfortably. The
ATV market is still strong for
both companies for trail riding,
as well as light utility work and
plowing.
Valley ATV now has 10
employees and has a 2 story
show room! We are a family
owned and operated company.
Most of the employees are
family and we strive to give the
customer a friendly, courteous
shopping experience. They
have 4 full time mechanics, 2
salesmen (Paul and his son,
Doug), 2 parts clerks, and
an ofce staf of 3. We are
here to assist our loyal and
dedicated customers, as well as
new customers in purchasing
new and used ATVs. The 4
mechanics are all certied
and can service all makes and
models of ATVs. The service
department has a variety of
specialty tools, so that the
customer can receive the best
of service for their ATV. We
have a large selection of tires
and wheels and a tire changer
to get you back on the trail
quickly. We have most pistons
in stock and a boring machine
to help you get your engine
back up and running. The staf
personnel at Valley ATV prides
themselves in making sure that
their customers have a well-
stocked selection of parts and
accessories, to get them what
they want- when they need it.
We also ofer a wide variety
of after-market parts and
accessories for both the ATVs
and the side by sides.
The parts department can ofer
you same day shipping through
UPS on any part in stock. We
can also take special orders and
ship them out just as soon as
they arrive. We do take on-line
orders of parts and accessories
through the website at www.
valley.com. This is also a handy
tool for actually looking at the
units and picking out colors,
styles, and any accessories you
may be thinking of using on the
vehicle. The website is a great
way to help make your buying
experience a more enjoyable
one, one that can start in the
comforts of your own home,
at your convenience. We also
have a complete list of all the
pre-owned units on the website.
Pictures and a brief description
of each unit are also available.
Our website is equipped with
a payment calculator to assist
to with some nance questions
and monthly specials that are
going on at Valley ATV. Valley
ATV has a test track in the dirt,
so that you can test drive any of
the ATVs or side by sides in
the dirt before you buy! You
dont ride them on blacktop, so
why should you test ride them
there?
Valley ATV has been
sponsoring group rides for the
past 3 years. Doug has been a
big part in setting up the details
for those rides. They have
gone to Kentucky, Tennessee
and West Virginia. These rides
are posted on our website
months in advance, so that you
can schedule a ride. We have
rides for the whole family and
we have done couple rides as
well as rides for just guys who
may want to ride a little more
aggressive. Doug sets up the
housing and usually one meal
for the weekend for each rider.
We have the capability to haul
the ATVs and the riders, if
needed. We can do this all for
one price, depending on the
destination. These rides are
usually scheduled every 4-6
weeks, Fall through Spring.
Check these rides out on the
website, call Doug, and come
enjoy the fun.
Valley ATV is open Monday
and Wednesday 9-7, Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday 9-5, and
Saturday 9-3. We are closed
on Sunday, so that we can
all spend the day with our
families. We are also closed
all major holidays, and take
long weekends for Memorial
Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
We also close the entire week
between Christmas and New
Years Day. Stop by and check
us out, we look forward to
serving you.

After growing up in
Manseld and then
living in various cities
throughout the U.S., I
wasnt sure if I would ever
make it back to Manseld,
but here I am, Rob Danuloff,
owner of Danuloff Financial
Services, recently answered after
being asked if he ever thought he
would settle back in Manseld,
Ohio.
A 1995 graduate of Manseld
St. Peters, Rob went on to study
Accounting and Economics at Case
Western Reserve University and
began his career at Accenture,
working with clients such as
Fidelity Investments, Aegon
Insurance and then JP Morgan
Chase. After completing his MBA
in Finance, Rob decided to start
his own business.
Danuloff Financial Services was
established in 2008 and while Rob
jokes about picking probably the
worst possible time to start in the
business he also states, If you can
grow and manage your business
in the recession of 2008-2009, you
can handle anything.
Rob recently relocated his
wife, two children and his
nancial services business back
to Manseld and has enjoyed
catching up with old friends and
helping fellow Richland County
residents with their nancial plans.
He supports the Be Focal Buy
Local campaign because we need
to support our local businesses
and keep our dollars here within
Manseld and Richland County.
Danuloff Financial Services
offers comprehensive nancial
planning for individuals,
including college savings, wealth
accumulation during the early
years, and retirement planning and
distribution in the later years. Rob
also works with small businesses
in evaluating and implementing
the appropriate retirement plan for
their individual business.
Danuloff Financial Services
prides itself on truly individual
service, where clients dont
receive cookie cutter solutions
or investment portfolios.
Through the nancial planning
process, your entire nancial
picture is reviewed before any
recommendations are made.
In trying to dispel a common
misperception about who needs
nancial plans, Rob said, I would
encourage anyone, not just the
wealthy, to create a nancial plan,
because just like when you set
out on a trip and plan your route,
you also need to know where you
are and where you are going with
your nancial plan.
If you are looking for a new
way to look at your investment
portfolio, need help establishing
your nancial plan, or would like
a second opinion, contact Rob at

ADVERTISEMENT - Kathy Rinehart
began working for Mohican Kennels
in July of 1992 and purchased the
kennel in Sept. 2000. She believes
that pets are a vital part of a family,
stating they add immeasurable
joy and love to our lives. It is our
responsibility to do everything we
can to take care of them. Any time
an animal is at the kennel, whether
it is for an hour, a day, a week or a
month, they deserve to be treated
with love, care and compassion.
Mohican Kennels board all kinds of
animals, mostly dogs and cats but
they have also boarded birds, rabbits,
hamster, ferrets and even a turtle and
a goldsh. Kathy has always loved
animals and feels owning the kennel
is a dream come true saying I am
lucky enough to do what I love as
my job!
Kathy graduated from Ontario
High School and attended the
Colorado School of Dog Grooming
which included the professional
grooming and shop management
course. After that she attended the
National K-9 School of Dog Trainers
in Columbus, Ohio where she
completed the advanced obedience,
kennel management, utility, personal
protection (attack and Basic Police
K-9 courses). Mohican Kennels offer
group and private obedience classes
for dogs of all breeds and ages.
Large indoor/outdoor runs for
boarding dogs along with a large
fenced in play yard offer your pets
a little extra exercise and play
time during their visit. We do not
offer group playing where multiple
animals are together . (unless they
are from the same family). We offer
one on one play with a staff member
. Our kennels are scrubbed daily
inside and outside with a cleaner
designed specically for the use with
animals, says Kathy. They even
have an air purier to help with any
airborne bacterias and viruses that
could be present.
Dogs must have their basic shots
(DHLPP and Rabies) plus Bordetella
which a lot of vets dont include
unless you ask for it. Bordetella is an
airborne virus that spreads rapidly
among dogs. Cats are required to
have their basic shot (FVRCP) and
Rabies.
Separate area for the cats with
spacious Kitty condos . The room
has lots of windows with bird
feeders outside to help entertain
them during their stay. Shots are
required for all services.
Our groomers are all very gentle.
We do NOT sedate animals while
they are here nor do we yank
them around to get them groomed
quickly. We take our time and make
the experience as comfortable as
possible for the animal. We talk to
the owners to get an understanding
of how they want their pet to look.
Accommodating special needs of
your pets such as special diets,
medications, etc is given but they
dont give any form of shots to pets
(such as insulin) Pets that needs
medication in the form of shots
should contact their vet for boarding.
Mohican Kennels offer healthy foods
at affordable prices. I would not
sell anything that I would not be
comfortable giving my own pets. I
will not sell anything that I dont
believe is safe and healthy. I try
to make buying healthy food as
affordable as possible, states Kathy.
Our goal for everyone at the Kennel
is for every animal that walks
through our door to be safe, healthy
and happy while they are with us.
We love them all and want to see
them for years to come, says Kathy.

ADVERTISEMENT In the late
60s, enclosed malls were a
new and exciting concept. So
the news that a $12 million
shopping center anchored by
retail giants Sears, ONeils and
Lazarus was opening
in Ontario, Ohio made
headlines.
The development
meant new jobs for
the area, both short-
term construction and
long-term management
and retail positions.
Economically, it also
brought real estate and
sales tax revenue to
Richland County and
brought out-of-county
trafc to the area.
Over 500 people were
in attendance the day
the Richland Mall
opened in October 1969.
The crowd included
curious shoppers, retail
executives and mall
employees that had
worked non-stop to put the
nishing touches on the center
and stores in time for opening
day.
Since that day 42 years ago,
Richland Mall has undergone
structural changes that
included an interior remodel
and the addition of JCPenney
in 1996. The center also
changed ownership in 2002
when developer and long-
time owner The Richard E.
Jacobs Group sold the center
to Westeld Corporation. Four
years later, Westeld sold the
center to current owner Centro
Properties Group.
The center has
remained a vital part
of the community
hosting events such as
the annual Girl Scout
Overnight, student
art shows, school
supply and food
drives, and fundraisers.
Partnerships have
developed with
organizations such
as The Miss Ohio
Scholarship Program,
The Rehab Center,
CACY, The Special
Olympics, The
American Red Cross
and many more.
Over the last few
years, the center has
completed landscaping
and interior lighting upgrades,
interior and exterior painting
projects and parking lot
paving, just to name a few.
Retailers are also investing
in the property. Chuck E.
Cheeses completed a 2800
square foot expansion and
remodel earlier this year and
Bath & Body Works and The
Finish Line have also recently
undergone interior remodels.
On the horizon is the
relocation of current retailer
Nail World and the opening of
Shearer Equipments The John
Deere Store.

MOcoopinz.com is a full
service Integrated Media
Management company
owned locally by Steve
McKown. We offer text
marketing and a unique
loyalty rewards kiosk
that drive results says
McKown.
Although text marketing
has been around for a few
years, the concept is fairly
new to most business
owners. The idea behind
MOcoopinz.com is that it
gives businesses the ability
to send exclusive deals
directly to customers
cell phones through
text messages. Business
owners can target when
the offer goes out and
when it is redeemed.
Offers are also integrated
into social media programs
like Facebook.
According to McKown,
not only does MOcoopinz.
com manage the efforts
but they also work to
drive results and focus
on a strong return on
investment. In some cases,
businesses can see a 300%
or better return. One
customer ran a contest
offering a $50 gift card
prize to help build a
database for future text
offers. Within two months
the business had over
500 people they could
send a special offer to via
text. In addition, potential
customers can sign up
at MOcoopinz.com to
receive text alerts from all
participating businesses.
A new feature being
offered by MOcoopinz.
com is the Loyalty
Rewards Kiosk. The kiosk
is designed to entice
customers to join and sign
up for a permission based
opt-in program. The kiosk
will reward customers for
checking in every time
they visit. It will also send
out a text coupon reward
to the customers cell
phone when they achieve
a reward.

What? Local uniform & linen
supply available at Swan Cleaners
ADVERTISEMENT - In
1929 Gordon Schwan
founded Swan Dry
Cleaners. Eighty-three
years later the company
is still local and family
owned, with FOUR
generations serving its
clients every need.
Marilou Schwan (94),
Bud Kent (76), Carol
Kent (75), and Jeff Kent
(46) are still involved in
day to day operations at
Swan Cleaners. Jeffs wife,
Stephanie (45), operates
Embroider Your Own, Inc.
which handles all custom
embroidery and screen
printing.
Over the years,
diversication has become
an important role in
keeping Swan Cleaners
the one-stop-shop for dry
cleaning, laundry, and
linen supply needs! Swans
offers walk off mat rental,
towels, aprons, table
linens, napkins, industrial
uniforms, corporate
apparel, embroidery and
silk screening. Swans
services health-care
facilities, factories, ofces,
restaurants, and many
more.
Swan Cleaners competes
daily against national
chains, as most businesses
do today; but we KNOW
we have better service
and our prices are
very competitive if not
cheaper, Jeff said. We
were surprised to learn
that many businesses
were not aware of our
commercial services so
last year I started the
campaign Be Focal, Buy
Local, The best way
to improve our local
economy is to spend
locally, so please be vocal
for Be Focal, Buy Local.
Swan Cleaners does not
like dealing with service
contracts as over 90% of
its commercial customers
are by a hand shake.
If we do our job right
why do we need a
contract? Jeff asked.
A great example was this
past Labor Day when
Jeff received a call on
his cell from a local
restaurant manager who
did not anticipate the
large surge of customers
partaking of a special
they were running. Within
an hour, Jeff delivered
1,000 napkins to the
restaurant, saving the day.
All commercial customers
receive Jeffs personal cell
phone number for last
minute orders and 24/7
service.
Swan supports local
business and we would
appreciate the opportunity
to serve you, Jeff said..

Weighing Technology For Todays Industry
ADVERTISEMENT - The Ashland
Scale Company was established as
a branch ofce of ABSCO Scales in
1975, when Fred Gottfried moved
his family to Ashland as a resident
technician.
The parent company, founded by
George Ankney of Columbus, was
known and respected as one of
the largest scale service companies
in Ohio since the 1930s. Since
purchasing the branch in 1989,
Gottfried has seen Ashland Scale
grow from eight to 18 employees
in four cities. In 2000, the company
expanded again to add a new ofce
and service facility that includes a
climate controlled test lab geared to
meet the increasing requirements of
the ISO and TS quality programs the
company provides.
To meet customer needs, Ashland
Scale has amplied its line of
equipment to include scales
ranging from laboratory balances
to platforms, hoppers, conveyors,
and vehicle scales. Weights recorded
can then be used to print a ticket or
label, control conveyors or mixers,
or be interfaced to a computer to
print reports, track inventory or
bill product. Ashland Scale offers
foundation construction, installation,
custom built scales, custom control
panels and software, computer
networking and many other services
to complete a full inventory of
projects.
Ashland Scales priority, from day
one, has been to provide quality
service to its customers. To back
up this statement, the company
has consistently been a leader in
innovative programs to enhance its
capabilities. In the 1970s, Ashland
Scale was among the rst to have all
of its standards certied traceable
to NIST, and developed computer
generated service scheduling on an
early PC. In the 1980s, cell phones
were installed in service vehicles
for fast response. In the 1990s
employees developed ISO compliant
quality programs for their customers,
and, in 1999, Ashland Scale became
ISO-9002 registered. In the new
century, Ashland Scale has become
an ISO/IEC Guide 17025 accredited
calibration lab and boasts the only
nationally recognized Certied
Weighing Salespersons and Certied
Weighing Technician in Ohio.
These individuals passed rigorous
testing by the International Society
of Weighing and Measurement on
NIST regulations, and product and
technical knowledge. They are
among a select few in the nation
who have passed the test and have
been recognized by their peers as
experts in their profession. They pass
this knowledge on through Ashland
Scales in-house training program.
All of Ashland Scales service
technicians must complete an
eight course training program
which includes hands on trouble
shooting and testing, calibration
procedures, and ISO documentation
requirements. They then must pass
the Ohio Department of Agriculture,
Division of Weights and Measures,
technician licensing test and
complete one year of apprenticeship
before they are sent alone to service
customers scales. This professional
process insures customers get an
experienced, prepared technician
every time.
Ashland Scales service vehicles carry
not only NIST certied standards,
but also tools and parts inventory
to service equipment completely
the rst time. The state-of-the-
art service shop has a $100,000
inventory of new parts, as well as
loaner equipment to keep customers
businesses running.
Phone lines are answered 24 hours
a day, seven days a week, with
technicians on call to respond to
any and all emergency service
needs. Ashland Scale employees
know that if they can satisfy service
requirements, customers will look no
further for other weighing needs.

Miracle Mile Motors
gives the Richland
County area another
choice when it comes to
auto dealership caliber
service. Mike Miranda, the
former general manager
at Weidner Motors in
Manseld, says The
professionalism we bring
to the table is comparable
to a new car auto
dealership at independent
prices.
Miracle Mile Motors
has experience.
With 25 years of
experience Miranda has
been around the block in
the automotive industry.
In 2008, Steve Cobb sold
Weidner Motors and
MIke decided to open a
small used car dealership
(Select Auto Brokers),
With the downturn in the
economy we put a focus
on growing our service
business and in the
process gave Manseld a
new option with factory
trained mechanics doing
the work at independent
prices.
Miracle Mile Motors
has seen growth.
Select Auto opened in July
2008, and by the following
year had outgrown the
location on 4th Street
and Home Road. In April
of 2011, the company
relocated to the old
Weidner Building, giving
the room needed for tits
continuous growth and
to open the Body Shop.
The move created seven
full time jobs and the
ability to add more. After
nearly 10 years as general
manager at Weidner it just
made sense to go back
to where it all started,
Miranda said.
Miracle Mile Motors
specializes in sales.
Miracle Mile Motors offers
a variety of safety-checked
vehicles, warranties and
life-time oil changes with
the purchase of a used
car.
Miracle Mile Motors
offers professional
service.
A Tech-Net Certied
Center gives customers
peace of mind, along
with a one year 12,000
mile nationwide warranty,
ASE certied mechanics,
a foreign and domestic
specialist, and a complete
line of tires. Miracle Mile
Motors specializes in eet
and maintenance and
repairs, accepting PHH,
GE Fleet, ARI, MAPS, and
Wheels accounts.
Select Auto Brokers is
now Miracle Mile Motors
operating out of the
former Weidner Motors
building on Park Avenue
and is a one stop shop
for all of your automotive
needs with used car
sales, featuring a Car
Quest parts department,
body shop, a Tech-Net
Certied repair center
for foreign and domestic
vehicles, and a complete
line of U-Haul products.

store is much different then
it was ve years ago upon
opening. Today, Hillers
Country Market is getting
to be known as the store
with the best selection
of cake decorating and
candy making supplies
within Ashland and the
surrounding counties,
states Kathy (owner,
operator), This is not
myself talking but it is
what I hear from my ever-
growing cake-decorating
customer base. Describing
many rst-time customers,
Kathy continues, I
love seeing many rst-
time cake-decorating
customers as they react
like a kid in a candy store
being overwhelmed with
everything I have.
If by chance, Hiller does
not have what a customer
is looking for within the
cake or candy-making line
of product, she will do all
she can to get it in. I am
here to be a service to my
customers. I appreciate
each and everyone of my
customers and want to do
all I can to help them.
Although, Hiller does not
decorate cakes herself, she
has taken classes so she can
be more helpful to those
starting out themselves. I
can help customers with
the basics. My daughter
Molly McKean and I are
taking classes together and
our hope is for Molly to
someday decorate cakes
and give classes.
To go along with cakes,
Hiller has expanded her
selection of birthday
candles with almost 100
different candles to choose
from starting at $0.75
for a package of 36 basic
candles in various colors.
Although, Hiller is
expanding the cake
decorating supplies, Kathy
has not given up on bulk
food supplies, which is
what the store started
out being known for.
Although I am eliminating
some bulk food items to
create more space for the
cake supplies, I do not
plan to give up on the
basic bulk food supplies
such as spices, baking
supplies, grains, rice,
beans, etc.. and of course
my melting chocolates and
all the other related candy-
making items including
LorAnn candy oils.
Something else that will
not change is the all-natural
beef and pork that Kathys
husband Dan raises and
sells in the store. Hillers
is known for great-tasting
meats with no added
hormones or antibiotics at
good prices. I will also
always carry Walnut Creek
cheeses. I only carry the
basic cheeses Swiss, Colby,
Marble, Pepper Jack, and
Habanero, but what I lack
in variety, I make up in low
prices. This includes
selling Troyers Trail
Bologna at a bargain price
$3.60 a pound.
Something else recently
added and doing well
for Hillers is Leanin Tree
greeting cards. I carry a
nice selection of mostly
funny cards at $0.99 each
and $2.49 each. I love
the Leanin Tree cards
especially the funny ones
with bible verses on them.
I personally like to send
funny cards, but also
like sending ones with
a scriptural saying; with
Leanin Tree I can have both
with a Christian selection
of birthday and get well
cards. I am waiting for
a whole new display rack
to arrive with nothing but
bible-versed funny cards.
Hillers is located at
1278 Twp Rd 1656, west
of Ashland off of St. Rt.
42. The hours are 10 am
to 6 pm Monday through
Friday.

Since that time, Eclectic

Eclectic Tempo and offer
lessons in magic, pool,

Eclectic Tempo is the
brain child of David Kulig
who says I just got tired
of my friends saying
there is nothing to do
in this town. I wanted a
playground for people
who like to get good at
things.
Everything Cheryl and
David teach is based on
skills that require practice
to acquire. Practice
makes permanent, says
David. The learning
process is said to keep a
person young. We tell our
youth to learn something,
but neglect to learn
something ourselves. This
is a shame. The learning
process is important at
any age.
How many times have
you been bored out of
your gourd and said,
Theres nothing to do

asked. Well, now there
is something new to do.
We are here to teach you
new hobbies and get you
caught up on hobbies you

This year marks the
125th Anniversary
of Mechanics Bank.
In 1886, when
Mechanics started
out, every bank
was a local bank.
Today, 125 years
later, Mechanics
is still here, still
strong, and now
stands as Richland
Countys only
remaining home-
owned bank.
First named
Mechanics
Building & Loan
Company, the
business was
founded with
$60,000 in assets
and operated from
a private ofce
just two evenings
a week. In 1913,
Mechanics Building
& Loan moved to
the May Building
at 30 South Park
Street in downtown
Manseld.
Following four
interim locations,
the bank opened
its permanent
headquarters on
September 23, 1926
at the location of 2
South Main Street
where it remains
today and is now
Mechanics Bank.
Five additional
ofces have been
added in Richland
County since that
time, with the
newest at Trimble
Road in 2009.
In the span of 125
years, Mechanics
grew from a part-
time operation
to a household
name. The bank
survived economic
downturns,
recessions and
even the Great
Depression. In a
time when bank
mergers and
buyouts were as
common as the
sun setting each
day, Mechanics
chose to remain
independent.
So what does it
mean to be an
independent,
local bank?
It means
Mechanics
employs people
locally.
It means Mechanics
uses customer
deposits to make
loans locally. It
means Mechanics
gives back to the
community with
charitable donations
locally. Add this
up and together
you have the heart
of an independent,
home-owned bank
with the ability to
serve customers
in a unique way
locally.
Experience
Mechanics by

of their six
local ofces,

2 YEARS
RUNNING
ADVERTISEMENTS
It all began right here
in Richland County. In
early 1892 a group of
progressive investors got
together in Manseld to
form a bank. On July
16th of that year, the
Richland Savings Bank
opened its doors with
a total staff of four in
downtown Manseld.
Almost 120 years later,
Richland Bank still
stands as a pillar in the
community with over
140 employees and 12
banking ofces, the most
of any nancial institution
in Richland County.
Richland Bank and its
associates have always
maintained a deep sense
of pride in being a local
community bank. We
can tell you about all
of our checking and
savings products, all the
different loans we offer,
and our investments and
trust services but that
is not what makes us
different. We are rooted
deep in this community.
Our bankers live, work
and raise their families
here. To us it is not just
banking but building
a trusting relationship
with people who know
you and understand your
needs.
Be Local, Buy Local is
more than just words.
To Richland Bankers it
is being a part of this
community and giving
back. In 2010 alone, we
had 18 employees sit
on 25 local non-prot
boards, volunteered
at over 90 community
events, and The Bank
sponsored over 110
community events and
local non-prots. And
that doesnt include what
our associates give in
donations and time in
their personal lives to
their church, schools and
other projects. Thats a
lot of dollars and time put
back into our community.
Here at Richland Bank,
we care about Richland
County and those who
live in it. We understand
the impact our local
businesses have on our
economy. We strive to
support them in every
way, whether using their
products or services,
supporting them with
the latest in banking
technology or loaning the
funds for them to grow.
John Brown, President
of Richland Bank, when
asked about buying
locally said, Richland
Bank is proud to support
the Be Focal, Buy Local
campaign. Be Focal, Buy
Local is so much more
than a tag-line. It is
key to our communitys
success because, whether
it is small business prots
or sales tax dollars, the
money stays in Richland
County. It is money
that supports local
employment; pays for
new projects; provides
funding to local non-
prots and schools. And,
as a local community
bank, we are only as
successful as the Richland
County community that
we serve. Therefore,
our associates, that live
and work here, want
Richland Bank and
Richland County to be as
prosperous as possible.
So, please support local
businesses and do your
part to contribute to our
collective success.

Richland Bank invite

Weekleys will say a divine
hand is behind the wheel of
their automobile dealership
when asked whos in charge.
The Lord owns the place,
said Matt Weekley of
Weekley Chrysler Dodge
Jeep. We just sign a few
checks.
Matt and his father, Albert
Weekley, credit God with the
success the business has had
over the past several decades.
They also express a debt
of gratitude to Weekleys
dedicated employees as well
as the support of the local
customers. Both father and
son believe the golden rule
applies as much to customer
service in a business as it
does to any other aspect of
life
Matt said it was his
grandfather, A.M. Weekley,
who instilled the Christian
values and uncompromising
integrity in his father and
himself that has helped the
business thrive over the
years.
Mason Weekley, a World
War I veteran, moved from
Caldwell to Butler in March
1921 and started a repair
shop on Traxler Avenue
with his half brother R.B.
McCauley. In addition to
doing auto repair, they
sold used cars. A few
years later, the brothers
were approached by an
automobile manufacturer
and asked to become a
dealership. They began
selling cars made by Willys
Overland, the manufacturer
that later became Jeep, and
Chevrolet.
In 1927, A.M. Weekley
began to sell Chrysler-
Plymouth automobiles and
stopped Chevrolet and
Willys Overland models.
Albert said that in those
days, Chrysler automobiles
were known for being able
to get up a hill better than
most other makes. He said
his father went door to door
demonstrating his cars,
often to farmers. Albert said
his father fell deathly ill
with appendicitis in 1927
and was off work several
months. Before then, the
business had been open
seven days a week. After a
visit from a preacher, Albert
said, his father accepted
Jesus and promised to close
on Sundays if the Lord
healed him. A. M. Weekley
eventually recovered and the
business has been closed
every Sunday since.
In 1931, A.M. Weekley
bought his partners share of
the business, but McCauley
stayed on as a mechanic
until early 1960s. In 1933,
they moved to their current
location at 50 Main St., which
had been home to a Model T
dealership.
Albert said the dealership
remained open during
World War II, when a lot of
dealerships throughout the
country went out of business.
He said rationing was on and
the most gasoline people
were allowed was three to
four gallons a week. A lot
of people were selling their
cars, Albert said. My dad
would go to Cleveland and
Pittsburgh and bring back
cars and sell them. Thats
what kept him going during
the war.
Albert said car production
actually stopped from 1942-
46 so the raw materials could
be dedicated toward the
war effort. When production
restarted after the war, there
was a high demand for cars
and people had to get on a
waiting list. His father knew
about war from his own
experiences, and did his
best to make sure veterans
received new cars. According
to Albert, one of the new
cars after the war was the
rst Plymouth 4-door sedan,
released in 1946. It sold for
$1,164.
Albert joined the business
as a partner in 1954 and
the name changed to A.M.
Weekley & Son. In the years
that followed, the agency
continued to grow. In 1958,
the Weekleys added on to
the original building with a
sales and service department.
Matt said the 1950s were
something of a boom
time for the dealership.
It was also the decade in
which hydraulic brakes, air
conditioning and power
steering became xtures in
the automobile industry.
The dealership added Dodge
to the line of vehicles in
1970, and Jeep in 1990,
both of which are made by
Chrysler.
After that we added Jeep,
Albert said. We started
saying, If Chrysler builds
it, Weekley sells it. Selling
Chrysler Plymouth vehicles
and Dodge vehicles at the
same dealership was unheard
of at that time, Albert added.
In 2002, Matt became the
third generation of the
Weekleys to become a
partner. A few years later
another addition was made
across the street. Matt said
there are currently 17 full-
time employees, a number
of whom have been with the
company for over 40 years.
He added that he and his
father are very grateful for all
the support theyve received
from customers in Butler,
Manseld, Mount Vernon and
Ashland County.

Planktown Country
Market, locally owned
and operated, lies off SR
603 just east of Shiloh,
Ohio. Lots of Richland
County and surrounding
area residents drive to
this extraordinary market,
owned by Eugene Shirk,
who bought the store
in 1999. His vision for
the store has expanded
it though trial and error,
making it what it is today,
the ultimate Country
Market.
Inside the market there
are rows upon rows of
ordinary things and more
rows of unusual items.
Theres plenty of bulk
food all neatly packaged
and labeled. Walk down
the aisles and youll nd
lots of candy: chocolate
covered pretzels, coconut
haystacks, ginger slices
and malt balls, many
kinds of nuts, including
salted-in-the-shell peanuts
and sunower seeds
and much more. And, of
course, delicious Amish
and Mennonite cakes,
pies, breads and cookies.
Youll nd bulk items,
jars of vegetable soup,
dried potato soup, lentils,
dried beans, as well as
oat bran, cornmeal mix,
cereals, baking supplies,
cooking seasonings and
even turkey gravy.
But it is the deli that
draws a growing ow of
customers as far away as
50 miles, seeking meats,
cheeses and made-to-
order deli trays, that rival
those in Amish country,
and are usually much less
expensive than grocery
stores. Learning by trial
and error, Mr. Shirks
foresight has guided this
deli markets growth to
over 10,000 sq. feet of
retail area, including a
68 ft. Deli counter. With
over 100 kinds of cheeses
including onion cheese
to sharp cheddar, smoked
Swiss and Colby, this
selection is constantly
changed and evaluated
catering to market
requests.
Over 100 types of meats
ranging from ordinary
types of lunchmeat like
Virginia ham, turkey
breast, and corned beef
to Braunschweiger and
Lebanon bologna, head
cheese, honey ham,
summer sausage, and
Canadian bacon stock the
deli counter.
Heres a partial list of
some of the items you
will nd:
- Large assortment of
candy & candy making
supplies
- Hundreds of bulk items,
baking supplies, cookie
cutters, cookie & cake
decorations
- Hundreds of pastas,
beans, dried fruit, nuts
& snack mixes
- Canning jars & lids
- Hundreds of spices &
seasonings
- Hand Woven Baskets
- Pure peanut butter

Fin Feather Fur Outt-

regulars are fond of calling
it, got started in 1985.
Owner Mike Goschinski,
then in the moving busi-
ness, was getting ready to
go on a hunt and couldnt
nd a high quality sleep-

this area needs is a store
that has the right products
and people who know
from personal experience
what their customers really
need.
So The Fin was born,
starting out in a 2400 sq.
ft. cinder block building
in Ashland, OH. Through
Goschinskis determination
and drive, and the help
of his ever growing sales
staff, the Fin has continued
to expand becoming more
and more popular with an
ever increasing number
of outdoor enthusiasts.
Today the store in Ashland
is 72,000 sq. ft. and Mike
has just opened a second
store in Middleburg Hts.
Both locations are located
just off I-71 for customer

We strive every day to do
our best. Customer service
is most important to us.
Weve got an excellent staff
of knowledgeable sales
people in every depart-

make sure that every one
of our customers gets top
quality personal attention
and service. We want to
make certain that you have
the right gear for your out-

our loyal customers we
could not be successful,
stated Goschinski.
Whether getting ready for
a hunt in Nova Scotia, a
shing trip in Colorado,
or a weekend campout at
a local campground, the
Fin will make sure youre
ready.
Believing strongly in sup-

Goschinski sponsors a
Kids Day every year.
There, over 400 kids from
ages 6 to 12 years old have
a chance to sh, shoot a

feel for the excitement of
the outdoors. Many local
organizations such as 4H,
FFA, Buckeye Big Bucks,
Ducks Unlimited, Pheas-

year from Goschinskis
belief that giving back

Last month, over 200
volunteers consisting
of local business and
community leaders
donated their time and
talents to assist in the
Richland Area Chamber
Mission Possible 2 day
membership event, making
the event a huge success!
At the beginning of the
event, a goal was set to
gain 200 new Chamber
members.
The result - Your
Chamber is Now
Over 273 Members
Stronger!
Now over 1,000 members
strong, the Chamber will
have an even larger voice
in advocating for members
at the federal, state, and
local government levels.
Without membership
support, the Richland
Chamber could not
continue to represent the
needs of area businesses
in the support of
legislation and initiatives
that keep dollars owing
into our area.
The event also provided
a wonderful opportunity
for networking and
teambuilding among
the volunteers, and
the larger membership
base will also provide
more opportunities for
businesses to network
with each other in the
future.
Many participants noted
that a greater community
awareness was created
about the important role of
the Chamber of Commerce
for the volunteers, and for the
new members that have
decided to invest in the
Richland Area Chamber of
Commerce over the next
12 months. Lin Baker
with The American Eagle
Mortgage Co. stated,
I enjoyed the
membership event. It was
great seeing the movers
and shakers in town
participating together to
improve our community.
I had fun, my teammates
had fun and were proud
to be part of the Richland
County area. The
facilitator was a hoot and
helped us to realize all the
potential we have within
us and our community.
The Membership
Event kicked off August
23 and the celebration
party was held August
25th at the Holiday

results and thank
all the volunteers who
helped make the event a
success.
