(B. Sc.

Biochemistry)
First Semester 2006
Full Marks: 100
Subject: Chem 115 (Fundamentals of BioChemistry) Pass Marks: 45
Time: 3 hours
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable.
The figure in the margin indicates full marks.
Group (A) Long Questions (Any three) ×14 = 42)
(3×
1. Enumerate principles of Molecular Logic of Life.
2. Write a short note on cytoskeleton. Make a comparison of the three main
components of cytoskeleton.
3. Enumerate and illustrate general types of chemical reactions in a cell.
4. Define buffer solution. Derive Henderson Hasselbalch equation. In a
hospital Laboratory, a 10 ml sample of gastric juice, obtained several
hours after a meal was titrated with 0.1 M Sodium Hydroxide to
neutrality ,7.2 ml of NaOH was required .The patient stomach
contained no ingested food or drink ,thus assume that no buffer were
present .What was pH of gastric Juice.?

Group (B) Short Questions: (Any six) ×7 = 42)

1. The molecular weight of an E. coli DNA molecule is about 3.1 x 10
g/mol. The average molecular weight of a nucleotide pair is 660 g/mol,
and each nucleotide pair contributes 0.34 nm to the length of DNA.
a. Calculate the length of an E. coli DNA molecule.
b. Assume that the average protein in E. coli consists of a chain of 400
amino acids. What is the maximum number of proteins that can be
coded by an E. coli DNA molecule?
2. Describe in brief the mechanism of transfer of biological information.
3. A buffer contains 0.010 mol of lactic acid (pKa = 3.86) and 0.050 mol of
sodium lactate per liter. (a) Calculate the pH of the buffer. (b) Calculate
the change in pH when 5 mL of 0.5 M HCl is added to 1 L of the
buffer. (c) What pH change would you expect if you added the same
quantity of HCl to 1 L of pure water?
4. Discuss the cytochemistry of nucleus.
5. Write a note on the Endomembrane system
6. Define configuration and conformation with examples. Explain their
differences.
7. Describe weak interactions
8. Discuss water acts as a reactant
Group (C) Very Short Questions: (Any eight) ×8 = 16)
(2×
1. Exergonic and endergonic reactions
2. Feed back inhibition
3. What is an open, isothermal system?
4. Peroxisomes
5. Histones
6. Phagocytosis
7. Structure of Histidine and Tryptophan
8. Optical activity
9 Draw the ring structure of – D Glucose.
10. What is the concentration of H+ in a solution 0.1 M NaOH .
11. Define amphipathic compounds?
12. Proton shows abnormally high mobility. Why?
