The Great Outdoors Adventure Stories

Objectives
Students will be able to identify objects used for camping. Students will be able to read short adventure stories and complete comprehension questions. Students will be able to write their own short stories. Students will be able to plan a camping trip.

Sample Activities
Have students read adventure stories and complete comprehension questions. Have the class write an adventure story together by doing a round robin. The story will be developed as each student gives a sentence. Next, students can work in pairs or independently to write their own stories. Encourage them to illustrate the story when they are finished writing. Have students work in teams to plan a camping trip. The team should describe and write about where they are going camping, the supplies they need, how long they will stay, and the activities that they will do there.

Autobiographies

Students will be able to read an autobiography and compare/contrast themselves to the main character. Students will be able to write an autobiography.

Introduce students to the idea of autobiographies. Have them read the autobiography of Anne Frank and complete comprehension questions. Students can make a timeline of Anne Franks life to get a better understanding of the length of time that she lived in hiding in an attic. Then have students complete a Venn diagram to compare themselves to Anne Frank. Have students develop and write their own autobiography. Before writing, have students complete a pre-writing exercise using a graphic organizer. This will help students develop and organize their ideas.
