SOME GUIDELINES FOR READING A HORARY ASTROLOGY CHART ---------------------------------------------------Decide on the main significator(s).

The Ascendant ruler, also called Lord of the Ascendant or 1-ruler, planets in the 1st house, if any, and the Moon, if she does not represent another, represent the querent. The Moon always represents the question. Find the house that the Ascendant ruler is in. This describes where the querent is. The Moon is co-ruler of the querent and usually shows where his true interest lies. This is useful if you are not judging your own question, for it may tell you the querent's true emphasis of interest. The Ascendant ruler states fact, the Moon indicates interest, what the querent has in mind. The chart should describe the situation asked about. The Ascendant, the planets there, and the ruler of the Ascendant should in some way describe the querent. Next, the house of the question (the quesited) must be determined. The house ruling the quesited should produce a planet describing the person or matter asked about. The planet that rules the house of the matter asked about or any planet in that house symbolizes the quesited. The condition of the quesited can be gleaned from the condition fortitudes and debilities - of the planet symbolizing him. A person with a good opinion of himself will be shown as an exalted planet. Generally speaking, if the Lord of the house ruling the matter is favorably aspected to the Lord of the Ascendant, the planets in the 1st

house and/or the Moon, then the matter will come to a favorable conclusion or the answer to the question will be "yes". Generally speaking, if the Lord of the house ruling the matter is not favorably aspected to the Lord of the Ascendant, the planets in the 1st house and/or the Moon, then the matter will come to naught or the answer to the question will be "no". The planets which favorably aspect your significator(s) show whence you may find help to obtain your wish. The planets which afflict your significator(s) indicate what hinders your wish. The Moon and her aspects until she leaves her SIGN tell the development of the answer within time and its final outcome. The planet over which the Moon transited last (conjunction) often reveals the circumstances in the past that affect the question represented in the chart. NOTES ON WHY SOME CHARTS DON'T WORK ----------------------------------Beware of those cases wherein the astrologer is subject to err and mistake, of which the learned have named four. 1. When the querent is so silly that he doesn't know how to ask, or what he wants. 2. When the time for which the figure is erected is mistaken. 3. When the astrologer doesn't know whether the Sun is on the line of the MC, or behind it or before it. 4. When the Fortunes and Infortunes are of equal strength, at which time you therefore ought not to receive any question. There may well be added yet three more ways wherein the astrologer will be subject to error.

5. When the querent comes only to try him, or put a trick upon him, as many do, saying, "Let us go to such an astrologer and ask him such a thing and see if he can tell us the truth or not." 6. When the querent does not ask out of a serious or settled intention, as some do when they meet an astrologer by chance or go to him on other business. On a sudden, they think of something, and so they ask, as it were, by-the-by, wherein it is a thousand to one that mistakes happen. But you may be ready to say, "How shall I know whether the querent comes out of a solid intention, or only to try me?" If you get an early or late Ascendant, then I say they did not ask seriously or they came to try me. 7. When the Lord of the Ascendant and the Lord of the Hour are not the same, nor of the same triplicity, or not of the same nature as the Ascendant, then the question is not radical. WAYS TO ACHIEVE OR DENY PERFECTION ---------------------------------TRANSLATION OF LIGHT - When two significators are separating from aspect (ideally a conjunction, sextile or trine) so that they are out of contact, only a 3rd planet faster than they and earlier in degree can reunite them, by applying to each of them in turn. It is then a 3rd person entering voluntarily to translate the light or restore contact between the two and perfect the matter for them. Translation is most effective when the Sun or Moon is involved. NOTE: in translation, the translator planet must be the fastest planet. If not, then look to see if the scenario is prohibition. Also, in translation, the two planets have already separated. In translation, the significator from which the faster planet separates should receive the translating planet in one of its essential dignities (the faster planet must start out in a segment

of the zodiac governed by the 1st significator so that it can carry the light of the 1st significator with it to the 2nd one). The translating planet may not make an aspect with any other planet before it aspects the 2nd significator. COLLECTION OF LIGHT - When the two significators have not been in aspect and are therefore like strangers, but each applies to the same 3rd planet that is slower than either of them and whose degree is later than theirs, that 3rd planet is a 3rd person to whom they both can turn, someone willing to "collect their light" and represent them both. Collection is most effective when the Sun or Moon is involved. NOTE: the collector must be the slowest planet, else the scenario could end up being frustration. The two fastest moving planets must never meet by themselves. If they will, then it can't be collection, but it may then be frustration. Both faster planets should receive the slowest planet in one of his essential dignities. FRUSTRATION - A faster planet applies to a slower planet, but before the aspect can take place, the slower planet aspects a third planet, thus frustrating the applying aspect. Think of the proverb, "The 2 dogs quarrel and the 3rd dog gets the bone". PROHIBITION - Two planets apply to an aspect, but before the aspect is completed, another planet intercedes. NOTE: in prohibition, the two planets apply to an aspect. The house the interceding planet rules might show from whom the prohibition comes, i.e. a brother if the interceding planet rules the 3rd house. SOME GENERAL RULES REGARDING TIMING ----------------------------------In your search for timing, look to these factors: Any applying aspect between significators. See how many degrees the

aspect is from perfection and assign an appropriate unit of time (see the table for the measure of time in the Traditional Horary Pocket Guide). Any applying aspect between significators. Check the actual ephemeris date and time of perfection. The number of degrees the Moon or another significator must travel before changing sign, for a sign change represents a change of condition. The number of degrees separating the Ascendant from a significator planet in the 1st house. Lilly wrote that the 1st house planet should be a Fortune, the Moon, or a significator of the thing quesited, and it should be essentially dignified. By extension, apply this rule to any significator and the cusp of an adjacent and appropriate house. If someone asks when he will obtain a new job, the distance between the MC and 1-ruler in the 10th house may show the timing. There are two ways to look at motion within a horary chart: as though the house cusps are moving and the planets are standing still, or as though the house cusps are frozen (like natal positions) and the planets moving (like transits). Timing may be shown by a retrograde significator's change of direction (actual date) or by the number of degrees the significator must travel before going direct. In addition, consider these factors, which slow or speed the action: If all significators are in the 1st house or in the oriental quarter (houses 10, 11, and 12) and swift in motion, the timing is faster. A significator moving faster than its average speed brings faster results. Mutual application of significators, which occurs when one planet is

direct and the other retrograde, brings sudden results. A slow significator slows the action. Cardinal signs speed the action; fixed signs slow it. SOME RULES FOR LOST AND FOUND ----------------------------Possession is ruled by its owner's 2nd house, but the possibility of losing or mislaying it is ruled by the 4th house. If 2-ruler is angular, then the missing possession is still at home and lost. If Saturn or Neptune is prominent, showing forgetfullness, then it is mislaid, and if not angular, then it is lost or mislaid away from home. If neither lost nor mislaid, then it is probably stolen (use 7th house rules then). Mislaid if: 1. 2-ruler, Moon, natural ruler Venus, 4-ruler or Neptune in 1st house. 2. 1-ruler and 2-ruler in good aspect or in mutual reception by sign or house. 3. 4-ruler or 8-ruler rules 1st house or is in the 1st or conjunct 1ruler. 4. Moon rules or is in 2nd house and applies by good aspect to 1-ruler or 2-ruler. 5. Moon trine the Sun or either of them are well-aspected to 2nd house cusp. 6. Moon in 10th trine a planet in the 2nd house. 7. 1-ruler in the 2nd house. 8. 2-ruler in the 4th house or 11th house. 9. 4-ruler in the 4th house strong by sign and in good aspect to 1-ruler or 2-ruler.

10. Moon last over or aspecting 4-ruler. WHERE IS THE MISSING ARTICLE? ----------------------------Take 4 significators: 2-ruler, Moon, natural ruler Venus, and dispositor of the Part of Fortune. With any of these angular, then the missing possession is in the home or in that part of querent's place of employment where he usually works with such things or where he thinks it might be or ought to be. If 2-ruler is angular, then the thing will be found more easily; if succedent, it should or must be looked for and will not be so easily found; if cadent, it is out of sight and only indirectly found. If intercepted, the article is enclosed and not out in the open. It is among other things if the significator is among other planets. If soon leaving the sign, then it has rolled down behind something. If on a house cusp, then it is near a gate, door or window. If in good aspect to 1-ruler, then he can reach it conveniently. If 1-ruler or the Moon was last over 2-ruler or the natural ruler Venus, then the querent had it last and it is where he lost it - if last over 4-ruler, then it is where he mislaid it. If one of the four significators is in mutual reception, then it is not now in the place where it was lost or mislaid. Read the thing back in its own sign, signifying that after being lost in one place it was moved to another location, which gives a good clue in looking elsewhere for the thing. Usually it will be found in the place indicated by the house ruled by the other mutual reception planet. Saturn in or ruling the 7th confirms a revised reading. If proven not in the home, then 2-ruler succedent shows it is a short distance away and recoverable. if cadent, then it is far away and

difficult to find, if at all. If 4-ruler is in the 4th house or intercepted, then it is mislaid in or around the home. See study notes for descriptions of places according to element and direction. Use house direction first, then sign direction. PLACES DESCRIBED BY THE PLANETS, SIGNS, and HOUSES -------------------------------------------------PLANETS represent the thing asked about and describe it. SIGNS describe the place it is in. The ELEMENT of the sign tells you where to look for it. AIR - denote the highlands, highest part of the house or HIGH in a room. WEST. FIRE - near a fireplace, heater, stove, chimney or outdoors, anywhere there has been a fire and near something made of iron. MIDWAY UP in a room. EAST. WATER - near a faucet, sink, washbowl or tub, near plumbing lines. LOW in a room. NORTH. EARTH - at or below GROUND LEVEL. close to the floor or on the first floor of a building, on stone or gravel or cement in the open. SOUTH. ANGULAR HOUSES - in the home or in the part where the person generally works with such things or suspects it may be found. Can be easily reached. SUCCEDENT HOUSES - it is not in the house, but not far away. Perhaps in the garden or yard or in buildings close by and not out of range. CADENT HOUSES - it is farther off and may be lost, hidden or secluded. Perhaps sent away. In the 3rd - a nearer neighborhood. In the 9th - a distant neighborhood. In the 6th or 12th - in a neighborhood different in type from querent's.

DIRECTIONS The planet representing the querent or the person or thing inquired about is the significator. Where you find that planet by HOUSE and SIGN, there will you find the person or thing you are seeking. HOUSE DIR. HOUSE DIR. HOUSE DIR. The 4th house and 4-ruler symbolize the querent's present home. The 7th house and 7-ruler represent the place or house about which the querent inquires, the prospective new home. The 10th house and 10-ruler symbolize the good or bad that may result from the move. RULES: If 4-ruler is in the 7th and is a good planet, and if 1-ruler and 7ruler are good planets or strong by sign or house, and if they are direct, swift in motion, and in good aspect with good planets, then it is best to stay where you are and not move. If Fortunate planets are in the 1st or 4th, then give encouragement to stay. If 1-ruler or 4-ruler are sextile, trine or conjunct each other,

or in good aspect with fortunate planets, advise staying. If the 1st or 4th houses are afflicted by the presence of Infortunes, then move. The houses the afflicting planets rule show the cause of injury the querent suffers. Consider the separation and application of the Moon. It is better to move if the 7-ruler is with a good planet and the 4ruler with an evil one, for you will be damaged by staying. If 1-ruler recently separates from a square or opposition to 6-ruler, 8-ruler or 12-ruler, and if the Moon concurs in judgment by separating from any evil aspect of an Infortune, with the Infortune ruling either the 7th or the 4th and not representing or supporting the querent; or if an Infortune is in the 1st house, peregrine or retrograde; or if a peregrine or unfortunate planet was in the 4th; or if 2-ruler was weak or poorly positioned, then advise the querent to move. Look to the planet in the chart that is most fortunate, strongest, and has the most friendly aspect to 1-ruler or 2-ruler. Then look at the sign that planet occupies and suggest moving to a place that sign represents. If Moon separates from Jupiter or Venus, or if Jupiter or Venus is in the 1st house, then stay. If the Moon separates from Mars or Saturn, or if Mars or Saturn is in the 1st house, then move. If 1-ruler is stronger than 7-ruler, then stay; if not, move. If both are afflicted or badly positioned, then go. If both are indifferent and aspected well rather than badly, then stay. If Moon separates from an Infortune, then go. If Moon separates from a Fortune, then stay. If 1ruler separates from Infortunes and applies to Fortunes, then go. If 1ruler separates from Fortunes and applies to Infortunes, then stay. If 1-ruler and the Moon agree, then the judgment is more certain.

If the planet to whom the Moon applies is better than the planet she separates from, then move, if not, stay. If 7-ruler is with a good planet and 4-ruler is with a bad planet, it is not good to stay. It is better to STAY if: 4-ruler is a good planet in the 7th. 1-ruler and 7-ruler are good planets or strong by sign, direct, swift, and aspecting good planets. 1-ruler is stronger than 7-ruler. 2-ruler is stronger than 8-ruler. Moon separates from a Benefic. The planet the Moon separates from is better than the planet she applies to. Jupiter or Venus is in the 1st house. A fortunate planet is in the 1st or 4th house. 1-ruler separates from a Benefic and applies to an Infortune. 1-ruler sextile, trine or conjunct 4-ruler. 1-ruler and 4-ruler are in good aspect to fortunate planets. It is better to LEAVE if: 7-ruler aspects a good planet and 4-ruler aspects an evil planet. 1-ruler separates from a square or opposition to 6-ruler, 8-ruler, or 12-ruler and the Moon separates from any evil aspect to an Infortune ruling the 7th or 4th, and neither is a friend or significator of the querent. 1-ruler separates from an Infortune and applies to a Benefic. 1st house contains an unfortunate planet, especially one which is peregrine or retrograde. Mars or Saturn is in the 1st house.

4th house contains a peregrine or unfortunate planet. 2-ruler is weak or badly placed. 8-ruler is stronger than 2-ruler. Moon separates from an Infortune. The planet the Moon applies to is better than the planet she separates from. 7-ruler is stronger than 1-ruler. REAL ESTATE - ON BUYING AND SELLING ----------------------------------Querent is represented by Ascendant and 1-ruler. Planets in the 1st house help to describe the querent. The other party is shown by the 7th house and 7-ruler. Planets in the 7th help to describe the other party. The property is symbolized by the 4th house, any planets therein, the Moon, and 4-ruler. The property's price is shown by the 10th house, 10-ruler, and any planets in the 10th. They show whether the price will be cheap or expensive. The 10th house represents the ACTUAL selling price should a sale take place, regardless of the original asking price. SOME RULES: If 1-ruler and 7-ruler make any harmonious aspect, especially with 7ruler applying to 1-ruler, then the 7th house person has good intentions to complete the sale and negotiate with the querent. If the significators are in any essential dignity, then the parties are likely to conclude the sale with little effort. If the application or any translation of light is by square or opposition, they will have long discussions, but will probably break off negotiations after much time and effort.

If the querent is the buyer, then consider whether 1-ruler or Moon applies to 4-ruler OR 4-ruler or Moon applies to 1-ruler OR 4-ruler alone applies to 1-ruler and receives him in any dignity OR 1-ruler or Moon is in the 4th OR 4-ruler is in the 1st. If any of these agree, the person asking about the house will buy it. When the querent is the seller, the 7th house represents the buyer and the sale is shown by connections between the 4th and 7th houses. If the Moon translates the light from 4-ruler to 1-ruler (querent is buyer) or from 4-ruler to 7-ruler (querent is seller), then a bargain will be concluded through messengers or brokers rather than through direct negotiations of the principals. A sale contract is an agreement between buyer and seller which depends on a connection between the querent's significators and the 7th house. If there is no application, translation, or collection of light linking these, there may not be an agreement or sale. In questions about property, the Moon shows who gains by the transaction. Moon in 1st benefits the querent, Moon in 7th benefits his opposite. If querent is the seller, Moon in 8th can show prospective buyers hold onto their cash and are not likely to hand it over to the querent's side of the chart. If the querent is the buyer, Moon in 8th can show payment to the seller. In general, the Moon shows where the money goes in the transaction. Examples, Moon in 10th - money goes to the sale price (price went up), Moon in 4th - money goes into the property (repairs needed on property, price of the property was raised to cover some of the expenses). Price is shown by 10-ruler. If 10-ruler is angular, direct, and strong in essential dignities, the price will be high. In this case, the seller will charge high interest rates. If 10-ruler is cadent, retrograde, slow

in motion, or afflicted, the price cannot rise high. In practice, a strong and well dignified 10-ruler shows a high price that remains high or increases. If the querent is the buyer, a weak 10-ruler shows that the price is negotiable and the seller will agree to a lower price. If the querent is the seller, a weak 10-ruler shows that the asking price is too high or that the final selling price will be negotiated downward. Lilly warned prospective buyers that if Mars and Saturn are in the 4th and very strong or peregrine, or if the 4-ruler is retrograde, unfortunate, or in its sign of fall or detriment, the property will not stay long in the buyer's family. If Jupiter, Venus, or the North Node is in the 4th or rules the 4th and is in the 4th, the buyer may expect success with the land or house being purchased and his investment will increase in value. Quality of the land - consider the 4th house and its sign. If an Infortune is in the sign of the 4th house and retrograde or in his fall or detriment, the land's quality will be adversely affected according to the planet's nature. Example, Scorpio on the 4th house cusp, Saturn in the 4th and retrograde or afflicted - ground contains too much water, it floods or it's boggy.
