Summary of the M.Sc. Engineering dissertation

Thesis Title: Performance analysis of MC DS-CDMA Wireless communication system in a

Nakagami-m frequency selective multi-path fading channel.

1. Motivation behind this research work on Multicarrier Direct Sequence Code Division
Multiple Assess (MC DS-CDMA)

In discussions about 2G systems in the 1980s, two candidates for the radio access technique
existed, time division multiple access (TDMA) and CDMA schemes. Finally, the TDMA scheme was
adopted as the standard. On the other hand, in the discussions about 3G systems in the 1990s, there
were also two candidates, the CDMA scheme, which was adopted in the one-generation older systems,
and the OFDM-based multiple access scheme called band division multiple access (BDMA). CDMA
was finally adopted as the standard. If history is repeated, namely, if the radio access technique that
was once not adopted can become a standard in new generation systems, then the OFDM-based
technique looks promising as a 4G standard.
It is well known that the CDMA scheme is robust to frequency selective fading and has been
successfully introduced in commercial cellular mobile communications systems such as IS-95 and 3G
systems [1]. On the other hand, the OFDM scheme is also inherently robust to frequency selective
fading. Therefore, no one would expect any synergistic effect in combination of the OFDM and
CDMA schemes. In 1993, the MC-CDM/CDMA system, which is indeed a combination of the two
schemes, was independently proposed by three different groups [2–4]. Now, in 2005, the MC-
CDM/CDMA system is considered to be one of candidates as a physical layer protocol for 4G mobile
communications, because 4G systems require high scalability and adaptability in the possible
transmission rate and the MC DS-CDMA has the potential.
DS-CDMA system is the most deployed system in the United States [5-7]. However, due to the
complexity and the general low performance of Rake receiver, it is no longer the best choice available.
The reason for the low performance is because DS-CDMA converted a bit into multiple chips that are
user specific [5,6]. By making the chips period small, the signal is more prone to frequency selective
fading that is cause Inter-Symbol Interference that indirectly cause Inter-user interference and thereby
render the signal to be not recoverable [7]. However, the receiver of the DS-CDMA system
encompasses Rake receiver that exploit the path diversity of the signal and effectively combining them
to produce a better recoverable signal. Nevertheless, it is widely known that Rake receiver
performance is questionable in term of complexity it introduced. MC DS-CDMA system directly
applies coding in the frequency domain to separate each user and thereby making it possible to support
multiple users. This system is more effective in eliminating the frequency selective problem faced in
the DS-CDMA system by not dividing the user bits into chip to uniquely encode them [8,9]. Instead,
the user’s codes is employed in different frequency and thereby maintaining a longer bit duration and
thus making the signal to experience only flat fading and mitigate the problem of inter-chip
interference [2]. Just by the fact that there is no chip being introduce. Besides that, MC DS-CDMA
system also inherent lots of flexibility in term of system design that allows better spectrum utilization
[10]. It also has the benefit of relatively simple receiver structure. This is because the nature of
mitigating frequency selective fading of a DS-CDMA system into flat fading in MC DS-CDMA
eliminates the need for an equalizer at the receiver, thereby greatly simplify the receiver design.

Near-far problem in MC DS-CDMA communication system limits the capacity and

performance of the system. Hence some form of power control must be implemented in MC DS-
CDMA mobile communication. To mitigate the near-far problem power control has also been
considered in many papers. So far, most of the research on MC DS-CDMA mobile communication
system is done considering the mobile wireless channel either AWGN channel or Rayleigh distributed
flat or frequency selective fading channel. Although the
Nakagami-m Distributed was given in 1960, recently it draws considerable consideration of the
researcher [11]. This Nakagami-m distribution is being used to model multi-path fading channels,
because Nakagami-m distribution is a generalized distribution, which often gives the best fit to land-
mobile and indoor-mobile multi-path propagation environments [11]. Furthermore, the Nakagami-m
distribution offers features of analytical convenience, as it has been shown in numerous treaties [12]

2. Objective with Specific aims and possible outcomes:

Acquisition performance study of single and multi-carrier DS-CDMA over Nakagami-m fading
channel is done [13]. Performance analysis of blind joint soft-detection assisted slow frequency-
hopping MC DS-CDMA has been analyzed in [12]. Performance analysis of coherent DS-CDMA
system in a Nakagami fading channel with arbitrary parameters is investigated in [14]. Non-cellular
mobile wireless communication over a Nakagami-m frequency selective multi-path fading channel for
single carrier and generalized MC-CDMA system has been analyzed, considering perfect power
control in [15] and [16] respectively. The performance of cellular MC DS-CDMA in case of perfect
power control has not been investigated yet. Also, the impact of power variation (imperfect power
control, absence of power control) on the performance of MC DS-CDMA cellular and non-cellular
wireless mobile communication system over a Nakagami-m frequency selective multi-path fading
channel is not yet to be reported.
The aim of this work is to analyze the performance of MC DS-CDMA cellular and non cellular
wireless mobile communication system over a Nakagami-m distributed frequency selective multi-path
fading channel under the impact of perfect power control, imperfect power control, absence of power
control.

3. Outline of Methodology/ Experimental Design:

In this work, I would like to try to carryout the mathematical analysis and derive the simplified
expression of the signal-to-interference-noise-ratio (SINR) and the bit error rate (BER) for reverse link
of MC DS-CDMA cellular and non cellular wireless mobile communication system considering binary
phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation assuming the channel as a Nakagami-m distributed multi-path
fading channel under perfect, imperfect and absence of power control.
Also, I would like to simulate and evaluate the SINR and BER performance of the MC DS-
CDMA receiver varying the number of users, the processing gain, the number of fading path, the
fading parameter m, the number of interfering cell, the SNR per bit Eb/N0, the variation of the received
signal around the nominal value, etc.
In this work, I will try to evaluate the optimum system parameter such as maximum number of
users, processing gain, Eb/N0 ratio, the extent of power control, number of interfering cells, etc to
achieve an acceptable BER less than 10-3.

Statement of Research Interest

I am MUHAMMAD REZAUL HOQUE KHAN and I am Bangladeshi by birth. After

successfully completing twelve years of formal study in school and college I was enrolled and have
completed my B.Sc. Engineering degree in 30th October 2002 from the Department of Electrical and
Electronic Engineering of Islamic University of Technology (former IIT, Gazipur), only International
University enlisted by University Grand Commission (UGC) Bangladesh and a subsidiary organ of the
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). My overall CGPA is 4.78 in a scale of 5.0. I have secured
the 4th position among 70 students of my class.

I was appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering of

Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (former BIT, Ctg). This job involves teaching
of undergraduate theoretical courses and supervising of experiment courses in laboratories. I am also
working towards my graduation of MSc. Engineering degree in Telecommunication and Electronics
Engineering in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. My expected graduation date is
December 2005

In my undergraduate courses, I learned the basics of different subjects in Electrical and

Electronic Engineering. Now I wish to pursue PhD studies so that I can acquire a profound and most
advanced knowledge on specific areas of EEE such as “Information and Communication Technology”
and apply that knowledge in undertaking innovative research works and in my teaching.

My decision to pursue postgraduate study in Italy is underscored by my desire to be a part of

the postgraduate program at your institution. University of Trento offers the flexibility needed for
such a vast and rapidly changing field. The research facilities and the faculty at the university are par
excellent. It is renowned for its excellent graduate program and prominent research facilities. It will
really be a tremendous opportunity to be able to participate in the pioneering research conducted in the
Information & Communications Technologies Group of this University.

My interest in “Information and Communication Technology” blossomed during my high

school years. It was the time when technology had begun to make an impact on the lives of people in
Bangladesh. Right since the beginning of my undergraduate study communication technology is a
subject that has fascinated me with its power of applications. I have planned to pursue my PhD studies
and my first preference is the field of Telecommunication. Therefore during my postgraduate study, I
would like to focus on area- Wireless and Satellite Communication. My undergraduate and
postgraduate studies already focus on the communications aspect. A PhD degree in “Information and
Communication Technology” is the next logical step.

During my undergraduate project & thesis titled ”Study of CDMA based mobile
communication” I was attached in a renowned mobile company named “ Pacific Bangladesh Telecom
Limited ”. This short stint has given me invaluable practical experience. It has given me the confidence
to pursue a master’s degree and also kindled a desire to do research.

During my project work, I have come across several scientists. Most of them work in different
areas of communications. Interactions with them have made me realize the vastness and the scope of
communications. My discussions with them convinced me that specializing in Information and
Communication Technology would suit me very well. It is believe of my family that the Italian
education system has the one of the best to offer in the whole world. If I can get an opportunity to be a
part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my talents will be put to optimal use.

There lies a technological gap between Bangladesh and developed countries. This gap becomes
wider day by day due to lack of knowledge and facilities of our engineers to adopt and utilize latest
available technologies. Although Bangladesh is technologically least developed, still a wind of
technological development process in entire Asia seems to agitate my country too. This change will
very soon require expert engineers in different sectors. I intend to fulfill this requirement by putting my
initiative in the sector of Information and Communication Technology. My proposed higher study will
help me achieve excellence in teaching and research in the field of Information and Communication
Technology and this in turn will assist my country attain a higher rate of technological growth and
economical growth as well as the future communication system of the whole world.

As part of preparing myself for my future research works, I have tried to learn MATLAB,
which I think will be helpful. I can program in C. I tried to become familiar with the latest versions of
word processing, spreadsheet handling, presentation and other software.
